Dear Racetrack,
I'm glad you picked up the phone.
Yeah, I know that we both agreed,
We'd leave each other alone.
We're just wastin' our time,
We know it ain't right.
There's no goin' back, but havin' said that:
I know we said this thing between us is over. Couple of guys like us can't have a relationship for a lot of reasons. Despite that, I was wondering if you'd come see me tomorrow.
I wish you would come over,
An' drink my best bottle of wine.
I got a friend gave mesome real fancy wine. You could come, we'd drink, we'd laugh, maybe we'd remember why we started this thing in the first place.
You can lay on my shoulder,
And I can lean on you just one more time. You can mess up head,
An' mess up my bed,
An' leave before the mornin' light.
I need your on again, off again, on again tonight.
I promise not to care if I wake up alone in the morning, but I want you.
I don't expect things to change.
We've got to get on with our lives.
Now maybe it's just the liquor and the loneliness making me feel this way, but it's true.
Space is a beautiful thing,
When you need some room.
I don't know about you, but I'm lonely right now:
I'm just thinkin' out loud.
Before Spot could continue, someone knocked on the door.
"Enta," the Brooklyn leader said, turning the letter over.
Les Jacobs came into the room. "Hiya, Spot."
"Hey, kiddo. Whatcha doin' so far from home?"
"Race gave me a quarter to run as fast as I could and give this letter to ya." Les held out a folded piece of paper.
Spot reached for the note, "Thanks." He ruffled Les's hair, "Now get on home before Davey worries hisself to an early grave."
"I'm supposed to wait for a response."
Spot opened Race's letter. The more he read, the bigger his smile got.
Well, no, I don't care; I can come over there,
An' I can drink your best bottle of wine 'Cause I need your on again, off again on again tonight
"Tell Race I'll see him tomorra."
