Death
It had been Genjo Sanzo's first kill. In that instant, the final vestiges of a boy's innocence disappeared. The other priests knew, but said nothing to comfort him. In time, after Sanzo found and took in Son Goku, his dark mood seemed to lighten, but only slightly.
The monk never really got over the hardship of death and killing...he only learned how to cause more.
