In the heat of battle, covered in blood and guts, dirt and grime, and sweat creating a kind of shell around you, your thoughts are supposed to be on your survival. That one thought is supposed to consume you until you can almost sit back and win the battle, feet propped up in the lazy-boy watching the game.

Dean only thought of Sammy, and besides he hates sports.

He understands that one of these days its gong to get him killed, but he doesn't know any other way. When Sam left, he tried to push the feeling to protect Sam down into wherever it is you pushed those feelings. He really did try, especially since Sammy wasn't even there in the battles now, he wasn't even in danger —or was he? A new fear had started to consume him. He had never worried about Sam unless it was in battle. Now? Now, it was a constant worry, a worry that seemed to grow hands with long, sharp nails that tore into his heart.

Dean tried to figure out how to stop the hurt, thinking these thoughts while he tried to sleep in the run-down motel rooms they were accustomed to, always coming to the conclusion that it was impossible and that maybe he did listen to too much 80's classic rock.
