Music Man
Disclaimer: I don't own Bones or anything else attributed to the show. Also, Foreigner is not mine, but they are my favorite.
Summary: Bones goes over to Booth's one night after a particularly trying case and she discovers something she never would have expected.
Bones pulled up in front of his house, and despite it being a Saturday evening, the lights were on and his car in the drive. She grabbed the Chinese food and walked up to his door. The music was fairly loud and she suspected that he wouldn't here her even if she shot a gun off. She tried the knob and found it unlocked.
Tempe was beginning to wonder where he had found the sound system he had because it sounded live, almost like the musician was in the living room with him. She placed the food onto the table and waited when she heard a break in the sounds. "Hmm, must be the next track." She thought as she walked towards the living room.
The next few notes surprised her. "Urgent? Must be a new cd." She couldn't think of why on earth Booth would be playing Bach and then switch to Foreigner. Hell, she didn't even know he liked Bach.
She walked into the living room where she stopped dead in her tracks. The sound system was off and Booth wasn't in the room. So, she followed the musical strains towards the end of the hall and stopped in front of a room she had never been in before.
Slowly, she opened the door and, for the second time that night, she stopped dead in her tracks. The music wasn't coming from a cd, as she had previously thought. No, there was Booth dancing around the room in his typical fashion, holding and playing a tenor saxophone. "Who would have thought? Booth the musician." He was good; to say the least and he knew the music like the back of his hand.
She sat down in the chair on the side and watched as he continued to pour his heart into the music that was slowly beginning to envelope her. Then, abruptly, the harmonious sounds stopped and Booth turned towards her.
"Bones! When did you get here? And how long have you been sitting there?"
"Long enough to know that you are very good. Where did you learn to play?"
Booth laid his sax on the cushioned case and led her into the kitchen where he discovered the Chinese food that she had brought. As he spoke, he laid out the food onto the table.
"I learned how to play when I came out of the army. I wanted something to distract me from gambling, but I also wanted something that would be a challenge and would change constantly. When I walked into the pawn shop that day, I never expected to walk out with the instrument but I was fascinated. I picked it up rather quickly, and soon discovered that I could relax after a long day just by playing a few bars. It's been my stress reliever ever since and it's one secret I don't share with many. How about you Bones? Do you play any?"
"Not often but when I get the chance, I love to play the cello. It often reflects my mood."
Dinner and conversation continued along the lines of various musicians and why they loved to play. Finally, they agreed that it was time for bed and Booth walked Brennan to the door.
"You know what Bones? I never pictured either of us as musicians but I guess it is kind of fitting. So, you'll come over at some point and play with me?"
"Yeah, I'd like that, Music man."
"Hey, did you just give me a nickname? I like it."
With that, he leaned over and kissed Bones on the cheek, wished her a good night and went back to one of his favorite things in the world.
Author's Note: I know it seems a bit out of character for Booth and Brennan, but it came to me when I was listening to Foreigner. I am a musician myself, so I know that the people who can play are usually not the ones you would expect. Let me know what you think.
