MOCKING BIRD

DISCLAIMER

Supernatural belongs to the WB, which will soon be the CW. I thought it strange that Sam recognized Mary first in "Home" when he stated in "Pilot" that he wouldn't even know what she looked like except for pictures. Plus, it just seemed to me like they had shared a strange look. This is my take on why.

Sam was four years old the first time he saw and heard his mother. There had been a terrific thunderstorm and Dad and Dean couldn't be woken up for anything. He was about to cry out when he had heard the voice.

Hush little Sammy, don't say a word,

Mama's gonna buy you a mocking bird.

If that mocking bird don't sing,

Mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring.

She had continued until he had fallen asleep. After that night, Mary continued to appear whenever Sam was exceptionally frightened. Then, when he was thirteen, the visits just up and stopped. Sam couldn't understand it. What had he done wrong? Why did his mother stop visiting him? Had he unintentionally angered her or hurt her feelings? His hurt and distress over his mother's absence had made him foul-tempered, causing him to fight with his father. Their fights had gotten worse and worse until they day Stanford's acceptance letter had arrived and John kicked him out. Everything had been relatively calm until Dean had come to him saying that their father was missing. And then, they had gone back home. And that's when Sam had seen her again. She had looked so beautiful in her white nightgown with her blond hair flowing all around her. The way she had spoken Dean's name had revealed her love and pride for them. Then, she had walked over to him and said his name. He could only stare. He had missed her so much. Her next words had completely floored him.

"I'm sorry," she had said.

"For---for what?" he had asked, pretending to be confused. Her response was to throw him a look. One that said: you know what I'm talking about. And he had. She was apologizing for leaving him and making him feel like he had done something wrong. Then, she had disappeared, canceling out the poltergeist. Missouri had said that their mom was gone, but she had been wrong. For that night, just as he had started to have one of his nightmares about Jessica, he had her voice.

Hush little Sammy, don't say a word,

Mama's gonna buy you a mocking bird.

If that mocking bird don't sing,

Mama's gonna buy you a diamond ring.

And it was then that Sam knew that she would be there whenever he needed her.

THE END
