Family Symbol
By Phoenix DeFuego
Rinoa took a deep breath and inhaled the sweet scent of the flowers that surrounded her. She smiled as she heard the soft twittering of song birds in the distance and relished the feeling of the cool breeze gliding across her body. Lying on her back, Rinoa stared up at the blue sky with chocolate brown eyes and lost all sense of direction while gazing at the endless expanse above her.
Suddenly a familiar face filled her vision and she giggled at the person hovering above her. Confusion swirled through pale blue eyes as he lifted a single brow.
"You look funny upside down," Rinoa giggled. Squall smiled down at her and brushed her raven bangs out of her brown eyes. Rinoa watched in fascination as Squall's pendant dangled from his neck, swaying back and forth just a few inches above her nose. Rinoa caught the swinging necklace in her slender hand and caressed the metal lion with her thumb. Squall absently stroked her dark hair while silently watching her fondle the silver pendant.
"Where did you get it?" Rinoa suddenly asked. She rubbed the stylized cross between her fingers with a puzzled expression on her face.
"Raine… my mother gave it to me before she died." Rinoa looked up at him with surprise in her eyes. "Sis showed me," Squall answered her unspoken question. Her look of surprise turned into a look of understanding and a wistful smile graced her rosy lips. "He's kind of the family symbol."
"You mean, like a family crest?" Rinoa asked excitedly. A smile tugged at the corners of his lips and Squall nodded his head. Rinoa smiled as her chocolate eyes focused on the silver pendant cradled in her delicate hand. Her other hand grasped the rings around her neck and her eyes grew wide with a sudden realization.
"That means that your ring…!"
Squall interrupted her by gently placing a gloved finger on her lips.
"That ring belongs to you now," Squall whispered. "Now, Griever is your family symbol too." Rinoa gasped and looked up at Squall with shocked hope sparkling in her eyes. Fire spread through his cheeks and Squall quickly stuttered, "T-that is, if you want him to be…."
Tears of joy filled her eyes and Rinoa airily replied, "Yes." Rinoa gently pulled on Squall's pendant until his mouth gently brushed against her own. Squall tenderly caressed her cherry lips, his heart soaring with the feeling of her velvet lips pressed against his.
Reluctantly breaking the tender kiss, Squall smiled down at the angel lying beneath him and gently brushed a tear of happiness from her flushed cheek. It wasn't the most romantic proposal in the world, but Rinoa wouldn't have had it any other way. Even though he wasn't exactly prince charming Rinoa was overjoyed knowing that from now on they belonged to each other for the rest of their lives.
"Mrs. Rinoa Leonhart," Rinoa grinned. Squall's smile broadened as she said, "It has a nice ring to it." Squall showed his agreement with another tender kiss.
