Nick Troya was very excited to talk to Naruto about tactics and strategies in various scenarios but the battle in the Oberth against the Romulan Squadron was the foremost in Troya's mind. "I studied the Battle of the Void Asteroid Belt in detail and even published some papers on it. It was simply fantastic the way you handled the U.S.S. Oberth against overwhelming odds. Did you know that your battle reports are required reading at the Starfleet Academy now?"
"I was not aware that my battle reports were in the curriculum." replied Naruto. 'For some reason I find that disturbing.'
"Yes sir. I found them quite illuminating both as a Cadet and as an officer." said Lieutenant Commander Troya. "As a combat analyst I've seen simulations of the battle countless times. It never ceases to amaze me."
Mabui thought humorously to herself, 'It seems that Lieutenant Commander Troya has a bit of hero worship going on. I think the Captain is dumbfounded.'
The was when the heard a knock on the door. "Enter." said Naruto with a tiny bit of relief in his voice.
Shizuka came in holding a datapad and said, "I have the security personnel fitness reports Captain."
Troya was totally lovestruck. He stood up and laid on the charm. "Hello there beautiful. Where have you been all my life?"
Mabui stared in total disbelief. Naruto said as he accepted the pad, "Thank you for the reports, Security Chief Nadeshiko. I'll be reviewing them shortly."
"Aye sir." replied Shizuka. She gave Nick a death glare that made him recoil. Then the Earth raised Vulcan did an about face and left.
"Wow she's hot." said the Lieutenant Commander. "How do I transfer aboard the U.S.S. Wolverine?"
Naruto wanted to growl territorially but said, "I'm afraid that's all the time we have Mister Troya. Commander Kumo, please have him escorted off the ship."
"Aye, Captain." answered Mabui. 'I'll find Lieutenant Shores...'

Chapter 63
Stardate 2279.219 Sol III, San Francisco, Starfleet Bureau of Design & Repair
Captain Naruto M'Fau was having a rather extravagant lunch with Admiral Lucien Tolm, Captain Hiro Suzuki and Captain Vach M'Fau. He'd spent the morning touring the Bureau and saw the work being done in the detail design stage of NX-2000. Starfleet was so confident in the design that a huge construction dock was already being built over Mars at the Utopia Planitia Shipyards.
Other ships such as heavy carriers (CVA) were being detail designed as well. The first was already laid down and was coded NX-2200 U.S.S. Napoleon*①. Naruto wasn't privy to all the design features but had some educated guesses because he helped theorize their deck layouts years before.
A plethora of new ships and new designs were being constructed all over the United Federation of Planets from police cutters to dreadnoughts. But the ships being built the most were Naruto's New Light Cruisers of the NCC-1500 U.S.S. Kearsarge Class. They were simply that in demand.
"One billion credits in advance?" asked Naruto.
Tolm nodded. "The NX-2000 design could lead us well into the next century Captain Naruto. One billion credits in advance and an additional one billion upon completion. It's unprecedented that an unsolicited design has actually been detail designed but the new dock over Mars is all the proof we need that it is going into production."
Hiro Suzuki said, "Congratulations Doctor Naruto!"
"It wasn't so long ago that you were a Cadet with just a warp theorem Doctor M'Fau." added Vach. "We wish you only further success." 'Your Grandfather would be as proud of you as I am.'

Starbase 1, Berth 5, NCC-1602 U.S.S. Wolverine
Naruto had mixed feelings about it all as he entered his Ready Room Aboard the U.S.S. Wolverine. He was elated to see his ships in production but at the same time they were being built for a war. That's when he saw a dusty blonde-haired woman turn around in his chair. She was wearing a Starfleet Security uniform and gave him a big smile. "Hello again Naruto M'Fau." she said.
The Vulcan recognized her immediately as the last person he wanted to see. "Q."
"Awww, aren't you happy to see me?" Q asked in a sing-song voice. "The war machine is turning and the Federation and the Klingons are burning every last credit to feed the fire. The Klingons, Kzintis, Lyrans and Hydrans are at each other's throats and you're sitting pretty on a new battleship. What could possibly go wrong?"
Naruto frowned. "Your endless sarcasm is noted Q."
"You've got less than two years until the Klingons invade Naruto M'Fau." said Q. "Will the Federation rise to the occasion or fall? You could always run away from it all with me. I could show you a grand old time."
"I'll pass." replied Naruto. "My place is here on the Wolverine."

Stardate 2281.228, Starbase 12, Berth 4, NCC-1602 U.S.S. Wolverine
Personal Log of Captain Naruto M'Fau, Stardate 2281.228. Two weeks ago, the Klingon Empire invaded Federation Space just as our future history said they would. However, the difference this time is the Federation 3rd Fleet on the Klingon Border was ready and waiting for them. The Wolverine is with the 6th Fleet on the Romulan Border and the tension is unbearable for many.
When the Organians disappeared a year ago for no apparent reason, the Klingons took it as a sign and decided to be the masters of their own fate. Several of our Klingon Border battlestations have been destroyed and the Wolverine's old home Starbase 15 under Admiral Kosnett is now close to the front lines. Savage battles are being fought all along the Klingon Border and losses have been horrendous on both sides. Other fleets are being mobilized to help against the Klingon Invasion, but the 6th Fleet is tied down by the increasing threat of the Romulan Star Empire…
Naruto finished his log entry and reflected upon the last two years. There had been both good and bad. He had finally entered Pon Farr with his mates and was now formally married to each of his four wives. The Vulcan marriage on Mount Seleya had been a huge affair with large numbers of attendees from the Tolaris Clan coming to see T'Lyra and S'Loren both being married into the M'Fau Clan. Alison, Samui and Shizuka's human parents were all brought in from Earth for the occasion as well. That was a year ago.
Talok was now 19 and Naruto's son Siegfried was 13 and entering the Vulcan Science Academy himself. Both Naruto and Samui were both very proud of their son but regretted not being there to raise him. Fortunately, Naruto's parents had done a wonderful job with Siegfried and the young hybrid was absolutely brilliant. He too wished to sail the stars like his parents. Naruto hoped the war would be over by then.
That was when Naruto's wife Shizuka walked in with a sway in her hips and said, "More battle reports are coming in Naruto. The war is raging on the Klingon Front. Some Klingon Imperial forces have reached as far as Starbases 16 and 17. We should be there defending the Federation, not sitting here."
"Yet we are on the Romulan Front. Romulan 'privateers' keep showing up and the 6th Fleet is tied down with them." said Naruto. "We will simply have to wait."
"Can't we put in a request to transfer to the 3rd Fleet?" asked the raven-haired beauty.
Naruto shook his head. "Every ship in the 6th Fleet has requested Admiral Hiruzen Sarutobi to transfer. All requests have been denied."
"So, we sit and wait…" replied Shizuka despondently.
It was nearly a month later when the badly damaged heavy command cruiser NCC-1728 U.S.S. Gettysburg under Captain Asuma Sarutobi came limping into Starbase 10 for repairs. The ship was scorched and holed but somehow had managed to stay together. Many members of the Wolverine's crew had served on the Gettysburg and felt their heartstrings pulled when they saw the proud command cruiser in such a battered condition.
That was when they were contacted by Commodore Anthony Stocker of the command cruiser NCC-1703 U.S.S. Lexington. The Commodore was an edgy officer that wasn't afraid to take risks. Stocker said, "Captain Naruto, orders from the top. NCC-1728 U.S.S Gettysburg has been transferred to the 6th Fleet for a full refit and repair job. The 3rd Fleet needs a cruiser in exchange for clandestine operations. Is the Wolverine up to the task?"
The blonde Vulcan nodded. "Just give us the word Commodore."
"The Wolverine just finished replenishing for a very long-range patrol, correct?" asked Stocker.
"That is correct sir." answered Naruto.
The Commodore said, "I'm transmitting your orders. The U.S.S. Wolverine sets sail for the Klingon front at 06:00 tomorrow morning."

Staff Meeting Room
Captain Naruto M'Fau walked in and found his staff looked eager and ready for action. He announced, "The U.S.S. Wolverine is headed for the former Klingon Neutral Zone as mandated by the defunct Organian Treaty. We are to go there, locate and destroy any targets of opportunity that we may come across. Obviously, part of our duty is to gather as much information as we can in the process. We will be operating independently behind enemy lines with no backup. This is a three-month long commerce raiding cruise. Depending on our situation it may run shorter or longer."
Lieutenant Commander Whitaker said, "So we finally get to see what the Wolverine can really do…"
Shizuka cracked her knuckles. "At last! Those Klingons won't know what hit them."
"That is the general idea." said Commander Kumo as she looked at the map of known Klingon held territory. "When do we report to Admiral Kosnett at Starbase 15?"
Naruto had a gleam in his eye. "We don't. This mission is clandestine. After our cruise is over, we will circle around to Starbase 15 to report our results."
"Then we really are on our own." said Alison. "The labs and sensor techs will need to be at the top of their game."
Samui's eyes were set in steel. "It isn't the first time we've been all alone."
"We'll show everyone how it's done." said a grinning Rafi. "They'll come to dread the name Wolverine."
The blonde Vulcan nodded. "We face a difficult task, but we will overcome it. If there are no further questions, then everyone is dismissed."

Stardate 2281.257, Klingon Neutral Zone Territory, NCC-1602 U.S.S. Wolverine
The Wolverine ran silent for days after entering Klingon controlled territory before they stumbled upon something…
"Two large and four small freighters escorted by two Klingon E4*② Escort ships." said Alison from the sensor station. "They are moving at warp factor two. If those freighters are fully laden, then…"
Commander Kumo said, "Then we've found our first targets. Condition Yellow, Captain to bridge."
Naruto came onto the bridge a minute later and said, "Report Commander Kumo."
"Six freighters and two E4 Escort vessels sir." said Mabui. "They don't appear to have noticed us yet."
The Captain took his command chair and asked, "Are there any other ships in the area?"
"Negative Captain." answered Alison. "There's nothing even at maximum sensor range."
Naruto's eyes crackled with chakra. "Red Alert. Sciences, begin offensive jamming. Shizuka, arm all phasers and load photons to proximity mode. Target the E4 leading the formation. Rafi, ahead warp factor four."
A chorus of "Ayes" echoed around the bridge.
"Targets on screen sir." said Samui.
"Magnify." said Mabui. "…The Escorts aren't reacting."
"Correction, they are transmitting a distress call." said M'rella.
"Did anything get out M'rella?" asked Naruto.
"Negative." replied the Caitian. "They couldn't overcome our jamming."
"They are in proximity photon range sir." said Shizuka eagerly. "Permission to open fire?"
"Fire at will Lieutenant Commander Nadeshiko." replied Naruto.
The leading E4 took two hits in her port wing and immediately careened off course in a spin. "Excellent shooting Shizuka." said Naruto as the wing folded back into the hull of the escort ship causing it to explode.
The second E4 made to run just as the Wolverine pounced on the escort like a bird of prey with her phasers. One phaser salvo to the engine deck totally destroyed the hapless escort ship.
After that it was a relatively simple matter for the fast cruiser to hunt down the fleeing freighters and obliterate them…

Ship's Log, Stardate 2281.257; Captain Naruto M'Fau reporting. Today the U.S.S. Wolverine drew blood against the Klingon Empire for the first time. The small convoy we located has ceased to exist. This no man's land that used to be the Neutral Zone is an ideal place for our mission. I believe this is the first of many victories we will achieve…

Over the next two months, Naruto carefully picked their targets to avoid cruiser sized warships and above while destroying entire convoys escorted by frigates and smaller craft. The Klingon high command did not realize what they were dealing with a lone fast cruiser and assumed the bleeding ulcer in their supply lines was caused by multiple pirates or even space creatures…

Stardate 2281.344, Klingon Territory, Klingon D5*③ Cruiser I.K.V. Rapier
The I.K.V. Rapier was a brand new D5 Cruiser which was the loose equivalent of the Federation's New Light Cruiser. Its Commanding Officer was none other than the newly promoted Captain Kiba Warrigul. He'd been assigned to a cruiser squadron of three ships looking for whatever was destroying the convoys in the area over the last few months. As it stood, the Rapier was knifing its way through space halfway between two lightly escorted convoys.
The convoys were both escorted by frigates and the Rapier was at maximum sensor range of both in case the mystery attackers showed up. That's when they picked up jamming and lost contact with the convoy to their port side in the Pendulk System. "This could be it!" exclaimed Kiba. "Helm, ninety degrees to port. Lay in a course for Convoy 981. Ahead warp factor 6. Execute!"
Kiba watched as the convoy's ships started disappearing rapidly on his tactical display. They quickly started to scatter but the cruiser sized object/ship hunting them was far too fast for something as slow as a freighter to escape.
When the I.K.V. Rapier entered the Pendulk System they immediately began reaching out with sensors and scanners to find evidence of what had destroyed the convoy. It wasn't hard to trace the trail of destruction to the massive ringed gas giant Pendulk VII where a large freighter had been blown into cosmic dust. The Rapier and her crew also found the remains of the F5*④ Frigate that was escorting the convoy and were investigating the phaser damage to the wreckage.
"If we'd been here even 5 minutes sooner, we would have seen who was responsible for this." growled Kiba.
"At least we were able to confirm it was a cruiser sized vessel armed with phasers in this case." said his sciences technician. "Of course, that doesn't account for the twenty-six other convoys that were lost in the last several weeks."
Kiba sighed. "Transmit this to Captain Kadesh on the squadron leader Ravager…"

NCC-1602 U.S.S. Wolverine
Captain Naruto M'Fau was watching Kiba's transmission on the main viewscreen. The crew of the U.S.S. Wolverine had cracked the latest Klingon cipher and could listen to most Klingon messages as easily as they could their own…

"This is the Rapier to the Ravager. Captain Kiba Warrigul speaking. We have concluded that the attacker in this area is a cruiser sized vessel that is phaser armed. We arrived too late to make a positive identification. Respond."
"Ravager to Rapier. This is Captain Kadesh. That's closer than anyone else in the squadron has come Kiba. We obviously need a scout ship. There are at least five ships attacking our forces. Head over to convoy 984 and watch over them directly. We may have lost one convoy today but we won't lose the other."
"Understood Kadesh. Rapier out."

The blonde Vulcan watched as the D5 Rapier left the Pendulk System. "…I see my old friend Kiba has moved up in the ranks. It's a shame he's an enemy now."
"They just left passive sensor range Captain." said Shar. "…We are in the clear. They've left the Pendulk System's Oort Cloud."
"We should probably be leaving too then." said Mabui.
Minutes later the U.S.S. Wolverine powered up in the shadow of the gas giant Pendulk VII and warped out in the opposite direction. They'd been hiding right under the I.K.V. Rapier's nose the entire time…

Staff Meeting Room
"We could have taken that D5." said Rafi. "If we weren't so deep behind enemy lines…"
Samui gave one of her minimal smiles. "Easy there Rafi. Remember the Klingons think there are five cruisers out there according to their latest count. They have two squadrons of D5's looking for us. If we'd wrecked or destroyed the Rapier and the battle dragged on too long, we could get caught."
"Sadly, you are correct." agreed Shizuka glumly. "As much as I'd like to take out a cruiser or two, we are after supply lines."
Commander Kumo nodded and looked at her datapad. "We've taken out 23 Frigates and Escort ships in 18 convoys in 84 days. That's an incredible achievement. Just as importantly. we have destroyed 97 freighters of various types as well. That has put a large dent in the Klingon supply lines as well as tied up two cruiser squadrons who knows how many additional escorts."
"…And they otherwise would be attacking the Federation." said Freyja Christianson. "I've got to say though, I'm ready to go home. All this continuous combat is putting some wear and tear on my engines."
"The whole crew is ready to go home." agreed Ino. "In spite of the fact morale is high, our stress levels are high as well. All this combat and sneaking around is taking its toll."
Naruto walked in and everyone sat up at attention. "As you were." he said. "I want to announce we will be travelling northwards towards Kzinti Territory where we will slip through the lines back into Federation space. We should be in a safe port by New Year's."
Alison clapped her hands together once and said, "Now there is welcome news! We'll start 2282 in relative safety."
"I just wonder how long this war is going to last." said Amelia Whitaker.
No one had an answer to that…

Ship's Log, Stardate 2281.351; Captain Naruto M'Fau reporting. We have reached the devasted zone that used to be the Kzinti/Klingon Border The fighting has been going on for years here as opposed to months in the Federation's case. There is a strong Klingon presence here in the form of ships and mobile bases, but they are simple enough to avoid compared to our travels through the Klingon Empire itself.
Our orders are to report back to Starbase 15, but we may replenish at Starbase 16 first assuming they are willing and able to restock our depleted stores.

Slipping back into Federation Territory proved to be more difficult than expected. Aside of dodging Klingons, there were dozens of minefields and other defenses in place that weren't there when the Wolverine's first war cruise started. The crew was also monitoring transmissions from both sides to figure out the safest path to take.
When they finally entered the Federation 4th Fleet (Kzinti Border) Territory, they ran smack dab into the tail end a Fleet Battle. The Klingons newly formed Northeast Fleet had Attacked the Federation 4th Fleet and the battle had devolved into a bloody melee. The Klingons were defeated and in the process of withdrawing but the 4th Fleet suffered more losses.
One of those nearly lost was the New Light Cruiser NCC-1513 U.S.S. Littorio under the leadership of Commander Jackie Nodaway, an old Academy friend of the Think Tank. The Littorio was failing, and her photon torpedo launchers were offline. That left the battered ship with only four phasers to defend herself with.
Seeing a lightly damaged D5L command cruiser approaching, Commander Nodaway said under her breath, "We're cut off from the rest of the fleet. I've got four phasers that are recharging and no shields. Time to pray for a miracle."
Jackie was shocked to see the D5L fire it's disruptors over the crippled Littorio at something else. A second later, an alpha strike of two fully overloaded photon torpedoes and eight phasers smashed into the Klingon cruiser leaving her a gutted wreck. Jackie's eyes widened and her navigator said, "Our phasers have cycled Commander! Should I-"
"FIRE!" roared Nodaway. The U.S.S. Littorio fired her four phasers at zero range and the demolished D5L went up in a fiery explosion. The crew of the Littorio cheered as they rode out the shockwave of the point-blank explosion.
Her communications officer said in an exhausted tone, "We're being hailed by the U.S.S. Wolverine, audio only."
The viewscreen swiveled aft and the sleek fast cruiser was speeding towards them. "This is Captain Naruto M'Fau of the U.S.S. Wolverine hailing the U.S.S. Littorio. We are here to render you assistance. Can you take tractor beam? Time is of the essence, and we need to withdraw quickly."
Jackie sighed in relief, "This is Commander Jackie Nodaway of the Littorio, we will gladly accept your tow Wolverine. Also, it's good to hear your voice Captain Naruto."
Naruto replied, "Likewise Commander Nodaway, stand by for tractor link."
The New Light Cruiser shook a bit as the tractor beam from the Wolverine locked on to the Littorio and pulled her to safety…

Stardate 2281.360, 4th Fleet Headquarters, Starbase 20
"This is NCC-1602 U.S.S. Wolverine requesting docking clearance Starbase 20." said M'rella with a smile as the U.S.S. Littorio entered the Spacedock under her own power.
"Starbase 20 to NCC-1602 U.S.S. Wolverine, permission granted and welcome to Spacedock. Please dock in Berth 3." replied the Spacedock controller in a warm tone.
"Copy that, Berth 3." said M'rella. She pivoted in her chair to face Naruto and said, "Looks like we're going to have a Happy New Year after all Captain."
Naruto had a tiny smile and said, "Indeed it does M'rella. Indeed it does."

Starbase 20, Berth 4, NCC-1513 U.S.S. Littorio
The crew of the battered Littorio watched as the Wolverine parked flawlessly in Berth 3 directly to their starboard side. "We owe Naruto and his crew a beer for hauling our fat out of the fire." said Jackie to her crew. It was a sentiment shared by everybody.
Soon the Starbase repair and medical crews were flocking aboard the New Light Cruiser to get both the ship and crew taken care of.

In Berth 5 was the U.S.S. Littorio's sistership NCC-1511 U.S.S. Prinz Eugen, which was commanded by Jackie Nodaway's best friend, Commander Ozumi Otome. The two friends were soon discussing the battle aboard the battle damaged Littorio. Otome said, "The Prinz Eugen had shield damage but otherwise we're okay. I thought we'd lost you and the Littorio, Jackie. Thank god the Wolverine showed up. Come to think of it, isn't the Wolverine supposed to be on the Romulan Border with the 6th Fleet? What are they doing here?"
"I was kind of curious about that myself." replied Nodaway. "As famous as they are I figured they'd be in the newsfeed or something if they transferred. I wonder what's up. We should go ask Naruto once things are under control again on the Littorio."
"It might be nice to see our old Academy buddies from the Think Tank." said Otome. "It's been years. We were just kids then!" she added enthused.
Jackie was excited as well. "What's it been, eight years now? How time flies."

Starbase 20
The Commander of Starbase 20 was Admiral Thomas Galloway who was in his fifties and had red hair. He was very by the book but a fair man and made exceptions when needed. He was very thankful for the timely arrival of the U.S.S. Wolverine but was wondering just what the devil they were doing there since they were still assigned to the 6th Fleet according to his records. Donning a fresh uniform, he went down to Berth 3 to inspect the mysterious fast cruiser.
Admiral Galloway saw the name NCC-1602 U.S.S. Wolverine emblemized on the ship and inspected the exterior of the ship via shuttlecraft. 'The Wolverine looks very well maintained but has the appearance of a ship that has been cruising for months.' thought the Admiral.
Upon landing in the shuttle bay of the fast cruiser he noted the interior of the ship was spotless and the officers and crew looked sharp eyed and ready. After taking an inspection tour of the Wolverine, Admiral Galloway adjourned to the Captain's Ready Room where he sat down to talk with Captain Naruto M'Fau and Commander Mabui Kumo.
The Admiral articulated his words carefully. "Captain Naruto, the Wolverine's arrival was timelier than you realize. You not only saved the U.S.S. Littorio but destroyed The Klingon Commodore Kozen's Flagship, the I.K.V. Redslayer. She was a D5L command ship and he was considered a fearless leader. Kozen's sudden death caused the Klingon rearguard to lose their fighting spirit and a lot of other Federation ships were saved because the enemy disengaged with their tails between their legs."
Naruto stated, "We were unaware of the reputation of Commodore Kozen. All we knew was the D5L Redslayer was threatening the Littorio and needed to be stopped."
"And for that I thank you and your crew Captain." replied Galloway. "However, I would be remiss if I didn't ask you what in heaven's name you are doing here on the Kzinti Border when you are supposed to be on the Romulan Border."
"We were on a clandestine operation behind the Klingon lines at the orders of Starfleet Command." stated Naruto. "According to our orders we were supposed to report to Starbase 15 but obstacles in our path resulted in us docking at Starbase 20."
"You are over two thousand parsecs away from Starbase 15." said Galloway.
The blonde glanced at Mabui for a split second and she nodded subtly. Naruto's eyes locked with the Admiral's and the Vulcan said, "Given our current circumstances I believe it would be safe to reveal our orders to you Admiral Galloway." Naruto brought up a holographic display of their journey. "This is how we ended up at Starbase 20 Admira…"

Thomas Galloway was flabbergasted. "…For the past three months you have been in Imperial Klingon Territory, deep behind enemy lines information gathering and commerce raiding. In the last 103 days you managed to destroy:
53 Small Freighters
39 Large Freighters
5 Ore Frieghters
15 E4 Escorts
8 F5 Frigates
…Plus one D5L, the Redslayer."
"Technically we crippled the Redslayer." interjected Naruto. "The Littorio finished her off."
The Admiral sweat dropped. "I believe that's academic in the grand scheme of things Captain Naruto. The fact is this is an astounding record! All the data you've gathered on Klingon's ship movements and ciphers will be invaluable to Starfleet Intelligence. I need to forward your full reports to Admiral Kosnett and to Starfleet Command immediately. Bravo Zulu to your ship and crew."
"I'll be sure to pass that along Admiral." said a relieved Naruto.
Mabui spoke up. "With all due respect Admiral, the Wolverine is in serious need of maintenance and replenishment."
"Consider yourselves at home then." said Galloway with a smile. "Anything you need; we will do our best to provide."
