Short little thing that popped into my head, so I wrote it. Some Kaylee/Inara with one-sided Kaylee/Simon. Enjoy.
FoundRiver dragged her index finger along the walkway railing, watching it as she made her way to Inara's shuttle. She was on a quest to find Kaylee, and had already peeked around the engine room with no luck. It was Simon who actually wanted to find her, for reasons unknown to River, but he decided to give his sister something to do to test out her coherence after a new combination of medications. For the moment, the medications were working more or less well, and the younger Tam was in a fairly good mood.
Reaching the shuttle door, River opened it slowly and looked around. She expected to find Kaylee here, as it was where she spent most of her free time when they weren't spending it together. Sure enough, she found Kaylee. But neither Kaylee nor Inara noticed River's presence as they were thoroughly wrapped up in each other.
River was unsurprised by this. She was aware of what had been going on between the two of them as Kaylee told her stories often, always in a breathy whisper with a smile on her face. But it was nothing that River had ever actually seen with her own two eyes before, and she found it oddly fascinating. The two looked so different, Inara in her fancy silks and Kaylee in her dirty overalls, but they still seemed to fit. River smiled and turned back, shutting the shuttle door behind her. As fascinating as it was to her, she didn't want to intrude on their kissing, and she knew it would be rude to stick around, in case anything else might develop. She might have been young and a bit crazy, but she was anything but stupid.
Just as the door shut, she heard footsteps approaching. Squinting, she saw Simon's form coming towards her, probably checking on how she was doing with the new medications and looking for Kaylee. "River! Is Kaylee in there?" he asked hopefully, looking past his sister to the shuttle door. "No," she lied, "I wouldn't go in there, either. Inara's with a client. I'm lucky they didn't see me." Simon didn't detect the lie at all. "Well, that's why you don't just go barging into Inara's shuttle. And especially not when we're on land. I checked Kaylee's bunk and she's not there. She must have gone off exploring, even though Mal told her not to… Crazy girl," he said, and grinned.
River looked at her brother with pity. She had to remember to find a way to get him over Kaylee. If Kaylee and Inara kept it up, he'd find out eventually. She didn't want to see him hurt.
Simon, however, didn't take River's expression as pity, he only took it as a sign that the medications probably weren't quite right. He frowned. "How are you feeling? I don't think I've found quite the right dosages yet… But I'll keep trying, I promise." With that he flashed her a smile and walked off.
River, happy for Kaylee yet sad for her brother, wasn't sure how she was feeling. But that wasn't anything new.
