fluff-angst on the Commodore's part. And a painting.
Contentment
There's a picture on the wall of the Commodore's office, which he occasionally allows himself to get lost in - a richly coloured oil painting of a creamy-pale cat with green eyes, and a tiny, bright brown bird caught in its paws. It's an odd moment of contentment, where the cat has no intention of harming its prey, and the sparrow no desire to escape – as sweet as any dream that cannot be. More often, James thinks he was a fool to get such a thing commissioned, and stares out the window at the sea, instead.
