Chapter 85: Belong.
Jay/Hailey. Set after series 7. At Kim and Adam's wedding, Jay and Hailey finally confessed their feelings and spent the night together and now they are back in Chicago and hiding their relationship from their friends.
I do not own Chicago PD or any of the charecters.
Here is the next chapter. I loved writing this chapter :). I appreciate every single review for this story so far and I would love to hear your thoughts on this chapter, on where Jay and Hailey's story is going :)
The next morning, Jay called his therapist and made an appointment; he didn't want what had happened to Kim to cause problems that might bubble inside of him for months. Jay didn't want to be battling his demons when their baby was born. Hailey was proud of him. The Jay Halstead whom she had met years ago hadn't even acknowledge his PTSD, let alone sought and received help for it, so Hailey was so proud of her husband.
After spending more time Kim and her new baby, Hailey was even more certain that she had made the right choice to leave Intelligence. She and Jay had decided not to tell anyone about leaving Intelligence or moving out of the city. They were private and they didn't want the unit asking them so many questions. Hailey had already found a new role, an instructor for FBI agents in Chicago and it would be quite an easy commute into Chicago from one of the suburbs, but she knew that she needed to tell Platt because the FBI would contact her as a reference. Jay hadn't found another job, but Hailey knew that he would find something.
Their estate agent had booked a viewing for the two of them, in a three-bedroomed house in the suburb. He had sent them information about three or four houses in the same neighbourhood and Jay and Hailey had decided on the first one they wanted to see. Hailey and Adam were good friends as well as partners, so she found hiding something like this from Adam hard, but it seemed to be right, for her and Jay. She knew that Adam wouldn't understand. He and Kim had decided to stay in the same place since having their children, but Jay and Hailey didn't want that and Hailey was also nervous about talking to Platt. Before Hailey went to see Platt, Jay indicated to her, into his office, so she took off her jacket. "Is there something new in the case, something you don't want to share with the rest of the team? Are you OK, Jay?" Hailey asked, quickly, concerned about her husband, considering all that had happened when Kim had been kidnapped. She lent against Jay's desk, wanting to be as close to him as she could be, when they were at work.
Jay smiled gently and told her, "Hailes, I'm good. Don't worry about me. It's about the viewing. I can't make the time we agreed with Jason, but I can now. I know you can't and we wanted to see it together…"
"Jay, of course, go, don't worry about that. You can tell me what you think and I'll see it later today." Hailey assured her husband before she pressed her lips together and smiled, "This and the offer from the FBI makes it really real, doesn't it? It's actually happening and we're having our baby."
With a nod, Jay replied, "I know, Hailes. It's all coming together. After everything we've been through, we're about to look at house for us and our baby." He added a soft chuckle, which made Hailey smile, but the smile didn't touch her eyes, so Jay tilted his head until he was looking into her eyes and told her, "Don't worry about Platt. If you explain it to her, honestly, she won't have any objection."
Hailey shrugged and raised her eyebrows, "Maybe, but I become a cop because of her and I feel like, by leaving this job, this unit, and no longer being a detective, I'm letting her down."
"Hailey Anne Halstead, you could never let anyone down." Jay assured her, in that loving voice he always had for only her. "Now, go. And good luck."
"How do you always know how to make me feel better?"
"It's one of my many gifts." Jay joked with a raised eyebrow before he added, in an encouraging tone, "Hailey, go. You know you're making the right decision and you don't need to defend that to anyone."
Hailey nodded and smiled. "Thanks, I'll see you at home, later." With another smile, she left Jay's office and went back to her desk, occupying herself with paperwork on the case until it was time to see Platt. She hadn't told Vanessa about her and Jay's plans to move house or to leave Intelligence, but she knew that the younger woman would find out, because, after all, she was living with them.
Knowing that putting off her conversation with Platt was only going to make her feel worse rather than better, Hailey stood up, pushed her chair away and left the bullpen. The rest of the unit, besides Kim because she wasn't there, looked up, confused, but no one said anything. Platt didn't officially know that Vanessa was Jay and Hailey's surrogate, but they thought that she probably guessed and Hailey also knew how close Kim and Platt were.
When Hailey arrived the bottom of the stairs and she saw Platt at her front desk, she froze, but she could hear Jay's voice inside of her head and her own, so she shook her head and walked over to the front desk and asked, in a casual sounding way, "Hey, Serge, have you got a sec?"
"For you, always, Goldilocks." replied Platt in her dry voice, "Shall we go in here?" She left her desk and walked towards the interview room which was just opposite the front desk. Hailey remembering having a conversation, a heated conversation with Jay in here when they had been struggling with their fertility problems. Hailey followed Platt's lead and sat down, before the older woman caught her with her classic stare, then said, "What do you want to talk about? Are you and Jay finally ready to tell me that Vanessa is your surrogate?"
Hailey wasn't surprised, so she smiled and tilted her head slightly so her blonde curls fell on her shoulders. In an amused voice, she asked, "How did you find out?"
"You young ones really do seem to forget that I was a cop when you were all in diapers, Goldilocks." Platt said this with a faint smile before she added, "I've got eyes and ears and Vanessa changing her address to your home was a big of a clue. Also, a fertility Dr leaving a message for her was a bit of a giveaway. You're not surprised that I know and I'm sure Chuckles won't be?"
With a smile on her lips, Hailey shook her head, "No, I'm not, really."
Platt was silent for a couple of seconds and Hailey felt her free hand go to one of her curls and she twisted her finger around it, like Jay sometimes did, and she could feel the eagle eyes of Trudy Platt on her, but she waited for the desk sergeant to speak. She respected Platt and so did Jay. Platt looked Hailey up and down before she asked, in a matter-of-fact tone, "Are you going to tell me that the Chicago office of the Feds might be in touch with me, because you're leaving Intelligence? Leaving the police service." She paused, then added, in a kinder voice, "They called about half an hour ago."
Hailey felt something in the pit of the stomach drop and she put her curls behind her ears before she began, "Serge, please, let me explain this"-
"I'm going to stop you right there, Goldilocks." Platt interrupted and looked at her seriously before she smiled kindly, "Hailey, you don't have to explain anything to me. I get it, or at least, I think I do. Can I ask, when did you make this decision, to leave? I have no interest in gossip, but I do care about you and Jay. You know that, so is there something else going on? Why the sudden change?"
Breathing in an internal and eternal sigh of relief, Hailey quickered her eyebrows. "Well, it was actually Jay who made the decision first, to leave Intelligence, after he suggested that we should move and raise our baby outside of the city." Hailey smiled at the very thought of their unborn baby. Baby Halstead. "Vanessa's 20 weeks along now, so we could finally breath and think about it and he suggested it first. If-if you saw the way that Jay talks about our baby, you wouldn't believe it. When I was with Vanessa one night, I felt the baby kick and it was… the most magical thing in the world, but I wanted Jay to be there. He should be there, but he can't be, because-" Hailey broke off and shook her head, clearing that thought from her mind, "And I want Jay and I have to have the best future, with our baby, and moving out of the city is the best way to do that and Jay was already thinking about leaving Intelligence. I wasn't, Trudy, I really wasn't, until Kim was kidnapped. When we found her- Jay and I-I froze, because her instinct was to protect her baby and I thought- if I stay in this job, that could be me and I'm not going to leave my baby without a mother." Hailey stood up quickly and ran her hands through her curls and against her face, wiping away the tears before she turned back to Platt. "Trudy, I feel like I'm letting you down. I-I became a cop because of you and I don't want you to think that I'm just walking away, because this place it's a part of who I am. It's how Jay and I were partnered and we became what we are today."
Without a second of hesitation, Platt walked over to Hailey and placed her hands on her shoulders. "You listen to me, Hailey Halstead. You never have to feel as if you're letting me down; I'm so proud of you. No matter where you or Jay go, you'll always belong here. I've watched you and Jay for years and I've watched the two of you grow, together and apart, and now you're ready for this big step. For two big steps. I couldn't be more proud if you were my own daughter, Hailey. And, trust me when I say, I cannot wait to meet this kid, because the stories I'll have to tell him or her about his or her mum and dad." Hailey chucked softly and welcomed the older woman's embrace as she pulled her into a hug.
As far as Jay was concerned the house was perfect for him, Hailey and their baby. Their baby. It had four bedrooms. One for him and Hailey, one for their baby, a spare room and one they could use as an office as well as good-sized garden where their baby could grow up and run around. It was close to good schools and a good commuting distance for Hailey to go into Chicago. It was perfect and Jay couldn't wait for Hailey to see it.
"Jay?" A gruff voice pulled Jay out of his thoughts. It was Voight. He hadn't seen their former Sergeant for quite some time. "I've been visiting Olive and Daniel. Can you believe he's 11 now?"
Jay smiled and shook the older man's hand as he said, "It's good to see you, Serge."
"How's the unit?"
"It's good. We're all good. You must be enjoying retirement." Jay pressed his lips together, "Are you gonna ask what I'm doing here, Serge?"
Voight shrugged and replied, "That's up to you! I assume you're here because you and Hailey want to live out of the city. It's not a move I would've expected, considering how ambitious you both are, but I'm not too concerned." He titled his head and asked, with as close to a smile as Voight ever came, "Do you want me to ask why you're here, Jay?"
Jay nodded slowly, remembering that the older man never missed anything, but he didn't want to hide this anymore. He and Voight had always had a complicated relationship, but that was set aside now. "Hailey and I are looking at houses around here because we're having a baby." A smile of total happiness spread across his face.
Jay was surprised when Voight pulled him into a hug and patted him on the back, "Wow, son! That's the best news I've ever heard! How far along is Hailey? I saw her recently and I didn't notice anything."
A lump formed in Jay's throat. There it was. There it always would be. The pain of their infertility felt so close to the surface with questions like this, but he swallowed against it and replied, "20 weeks. We want to wait until the baby's born before we find out the gender."
"That's what Camile and I did with Justin and his sister." Jay lowered his head slightly; Voight never talked about Justin's twin sister, who had been stillborn. He knew that pain he and Hailey had been through, but that was unimaginable. In a matter-of-fact voice, Voight asked, "So, you and Hailey are adopting?"
The image of their last ultrasound, the sound of tehri baby's heartbeat came into Jay's mind before he shook his head and replied, "No. We're doing gestational surrogacy. Hailey's egg and my sperm." Voight probably didn't want that detail, but Jay was so proud of the fact that he and Hailey had managed to conceive, even if it was in a lab. The baby Vanessa was carrying was theirs. Half of each of them.
Voight patted Jay on the back and said, "I'm so proud of you, Jay. You and Hailey deserve it. And, Jay," he paused before he looked Jay firmly in the eyes, "From where you were when you joined my unit to where you are now, you've grown so much and I'm so proud of you. You'll be a great dad."
Almost speechless Jay cleared his throat before he nodded and smiled, "Thanks, Serge. That means a lot."
After their shift, Adam picked Kim up and they went to a restaurant and, whilst they were there, Adam asked, "Kim, is that Hailey?" Kim looked and, indeed, it was Hailey. She was getting into a car with a man and they were talking, very seriously, about something. Adam frowned and asked, "What's going on there? They're having a deep conversation?"
Kim rolled her eyes at Adam and scolded, "It's probably one of her brothers or a friend."
"I don't think so." Adam murmured as he watched the car drive away. "Let's follow them."
"Are you nuts? Follow Hailey and some guy?" Kim couldn't believe her husband sometimes.
Adam shrugged. "Something doesn't feel right. I can feel it. We know how to tail without being seen. Come on." Kim rolled her eyes, but followed. They followed the car all the way out to a suburb and Hailey and the man went into a house and stayed inside for over an hour, in which time Adam had put two and two together, or so he thought. He turned to his wife, with a grim face and just said, "I can't believe Hailey would cheat on Jay. This is unbelievable."
Kim looked at her husband. "We don't know that's what happening."
"What other explanation is there? Why else would Hailey come out to a house in this area, with a guy? And spend over an hour in a house with him? This is awful! I can't believe this!"
Hailey returned home, feeling so happy because the house had been perfect. It was everything she and Jay wanted for their future, for their baby. Their family. She could see Vanessa's car in front of their house and she smiled at the thought of seeing Vanessa and their baby.
"Hey!" She called to Jay as she walked into the kitchen. He was tired, but she wasn't surprised. She walked over to him, grinning from ear to ear and she tilted her head, looking into his eyes, as she asked, "How amazing is that house?"
A smile spread across Jay's face as he wrapped his arms around her waist and asked, "So, you liked it, too? I thought it was perfect."
Nodding, Hailey replied, "Me, too! It has everything we want and more with a spare bedroom we could use as an office." She paused, before she asked, "Do you want to make an offer?"
Jay kissed her temple and murmured, "I thought you'd never ask." He looked into her eyes and smiled, before he asked, "How did it go with Platt?"
Letting her arms fall from around Jay's neck, Hailey shrugged off her jacket and walked over to the fridge to find a water bottle. She threw one of Jay before opening one for herself and she lent against the counter and Jay followed suit, standing by her side, waiting. Hailey took a sip of the water, before she smiled and replied, "It actually went really went well, better than I'd thought it would. I told her everything: The surrogacy and us moving, which, by the way, she knew that Vanessa was our surrogate." She added with a smile and flashed a smile to Jay, who just raised his eyebrows, but he didn't look surprised. "She told me that I could never let her down and that she couldn't be more proud of me if I were her own daughter and she's seen both of us grow over the years." Hailey paused and tiled her head before she finished, "Trudy said that she can't wait to meet our baby." Tears formed in her eyes and she wiped them away and chuckled softly, but Jay saw them and kissed the top of her head. She shook her head and looked at her husband before she added, "I know we're doing the right thing, but it'll be so hard to say goodbye to everyone, won't it? That place has been our life for so long."
Jay looked into his wife's eyes and nodded slowly. "Yeah, it will. I saw Voight." Hailey gulped on her water and looked at him, shocked and Jay shook his head, with a small smile. "Yeah, apparently Daniel and Olive live round there. I told him what we're doing. Having a baby and he said he's proud. He said I'll be a great dad."
With a soft smile, Hailey whispered, "You will be, Jay, and you know you will be."
"I only know that because of you, Hailes." Jay pointed out, turning his body to totally face Hailey. "Only because of you."
Hailey turned her body to face Jay as she told him, "And I only know I want to have kids because of you." She stepped onto her tiptoes and caught Jay's lips in a soft kiss, before she pulled away and said, "By the way, Kim called when I was on the way of the house, so, if she asks, I was having dinner with my mum after shift." Hailey left leaning against the counter and sat on the kitchen table instead.
Jay shook his head, understanding. "Copy that, Upton." They both smiled, before Jay sighed and asked, "When should we tell them?"
Pressing her lips together Hailey replied, "I don't know, I know Adam won't understand and there's no point in telling them about the house until we're certain it's happening." She shrugged, before she added, "They might not understand, but this is right, for us."
With a smile, Jay added, "For our family." He tilted his head before he asked, "Shall we make the offer, partner?"
With matching smile, Hailey teased, "I thought you'd never ask, partner."
Kim and Adam called Vanessa, Julie and Kevin to their house, saying that they had something import to tell them. Adam was sure about what he and Kim had seen and he told Kevin, Julie and Vanessa this, but they didn't believe it, especially Vanessa. She knew how much Hailey loved Jay and she knew that he would never cheat on Jay; she saw, every day, how much the two of them loved each other. Adam was determined that they should tell Jay what they had seen. "If Jay saw Kim with some other guy, I'd want him to tell me." Maria, A.J and the new baby were at Kim's sisters, so the group went to Jay and Hailey's house. Kim, Vanessa and Kevin had made their feelings clear, but Adam wanted to do this, because Jay was his friend.
An hour after making an offer on the house, Hailey left to go to get a takeaway for dinner and Jay had a shower, before he texted Vanessa, asking if she wanted to join him and Hailey for dinner. He was surprised when there was a knock on the door, because Vanessa now had a key, but he opened the door and he was surprised to see Kim, Kevin, Adam, Julie and Vanessa. Jay pressed her lips together and lent against the kitchen table, folding his arms. For some reason, he was feeling defensive, but he forced a neutral way of asking, "What's going on, guys?"
Adam cleared his throat and asked, "Is Hailey here?"
Jay frowned, wondering what was going on, before he replied, evenly, "No, she's out getting dinner. What's going on?" He repeated his question. He could see how uncomfortable Kim and Vanessa were looking and Vanessa stepped away from the group and sat down at the kitchen table, rubbing her pregnant stomach. Jay smiled slightly at the very sight. His and Hailey's baby, but then he turned his attention back to the others, waiting for one of them to say what was happening.
Adam glanced at his friends and wife, before he realised that he was going to have to be the one to say this, so he began, "Jay, earlier, after shift, me and Kim saw Hailey get into the car with some guy. When I called her and asked where she was, she lied to me." He rubbed his hand against the back of his head before he continued, "We followed them out of the city and they went into a house together. They were in there for a long time."
Jay's eyes darted between Kim and Adam before he repeated, "You followed them? You followed Hailey?"
Kim nodded sadly and said, "Yeah, we did."
"I'm so sorry, man. We didn't want to have to tell you like this, but, at least now, you know. I couldn't have looked you in the eye and not told you, man." Adam insisted, as he walked over to Jay and sighed, "But I'm so sorry we have to tell you like this."
Keeping his arms folded Jay asked, "You followed Hailey to a house, outside of the city?"
Before anyone could reply, the front door opened and Hailey walked into the kitchen, with her and Jay's takeaway dinner in her hands. Immediately, Hailey's eyes went to her husband and she took in his defensive stance and then looked at Adam, Kim and Kevin and Julie and Vanessa. Placing her bags on the counter next to Kim, she asked, "What's going on, guys?" She looked between Adam and Kim, but Kim looked uncomfortable and Adam looked angry. Vanessa was sitting down and she looked uncomfortable. Hailey raised her eyebrows, before she turned to her husband and asked, "What's going on here?"
With an annoyed look on his face, Jay walked over to her and told her, "Kim and Adam saw you with Jason after shift." That was it. Oh. Hailey sighed and gave her husband a small smile, before he added, in a humours tone, "Adam thinks you're having an affair."
Despite the serious nature of the situation, Hailey looked into Jay's eyes and started to chuckle. She raised her eyebrows and looked at their friends, who were looking very confused. She indicated to the kitchen table and suggested, "Guys, why don't you sit down? This is pretty big news." She shared a silent look with Jay, one of their silent conversations. There was no need to tell the others they were leaving Intelligence right now.
Kim, Kevin, Julie and Adam sat down, before Kevin asked, "Guys, what's going on? You know you can tell us anything."
Jay and Hailey lent against the counter and Hailey rubbed her hands together before Jay replied, "Hailey isn't having an affair. The man you saw her with, Jason, is our estate agent."
Kim frowned and repeated, "Your estate agent? Why do you have an estate agent?"
Biting her lip, Hailey pushed her curls behind her ears before she answered, "Because we're looking at houses outside of the city and the house you followed Jason and I to is the house which we've made an offer on."
There was a dead silence and Hailey glanced at Jay, who was standing beside her, silent, watching the faces of their friends and colleges. Hailey glanced at Vanessa, who just gave her a small smile. Adam was the first one to break the silence as he asked, sounding shocking, "Wait, you want to leave the city? I don't understand- Why would you want to leave this place?"
Looking directly at Adam, Hailey replied, "We started talking about it, recently, with Vanessa and our baby coming soon, it feels like the right thing to do, for our baby. We don't want to raise our baby in the city."
"Kim and I have three kids and we live in the city."
"And that works for you guys," Jay intervened, sensing Hailey's frustration beside him, "But Hailey and I want something different. We want a garden for our kid. And, Adam, you saw the house and you liked it, didn't you?" Jay always was the peacekeeper in the team. He was their Sergeant and he was the best they had ever had and he was so good at being calm in tense situations. Jay briefly wondered how they would feel if they knew that he was ready to leave Intelligence, that he had been ready to leave before Hailey, but now wasn't the time for that.
Adam shrugged. "Yeah, it was nice, but that's not the point here!"
Kevin pressed his lips together and said, "I'm thinking that, if you guys move somewhere else, you have to leave here."
"Yeah. This is where you two belong." Adam persisted and Hailey looked to Kim and Vanessa. She knew that she could rely on their support.
Taking a breath, Kim smiled and remarked, "When Adam and I were out there today, I was thinking how beautiful the house was and the area. I can see why you guys want to move there."
The entire kitchen fell into a silence and Hailey was glad that she was standing next to Jay and Jay could feel her frustration, but he knew that there was nothing he could do now. He and Hailey had been through so much and this was the best decision for them and for their baby. The silence was only broken by the sound of the phone ringing and Jay left his place by Hailey to answer it, with a small sigh. He answered the phone and listened to the person on the other end. He could feel other eyes on him, but the only ones he cared about were Hailey's. Jay ended the call quickly and his eyes found Hailey's as he told her, in a low voice, "They passed on our offer." It was such a simple sentence, but Jay saw the change in his wife's body language, so, without thinking about it, he walked over to her and rubbed her arm in an affectionate way and kissed her forehead as Hailey closed her eyes for a couple of brief seconds,
Kim ushered the others out of the house and Vanessa went to her room, to give them some time alone. Hailey ran her hands through her blonde curls and shook her head as she stepped closer to Jay. In a flat tone of voice, she mused, "I know there'll be other houses and we have plenty of time, but, Jay, I loved that one. It seemed to be so perfect." She bit her bottom lip and ran her hands through her hair again.
Unable to keep the truth from his wife any longer a wide smile spread across Jay's face as he replied, "Yeah. It's good we got it, then."
"What?" Hailey asked, her bright, blue eyes going wide, processing what she had just heard, before she repeated, "What? Jay Halstead, I hope you're not teasing me right now!"
Jay shook his head slowly and replied, "I'm not, Hailes. But I didn't want to say in front of the others. We got the house!"
"We got the house!" Hailey repeated as a smile formed on her lips and she fell into Jay's arms and wrapped her arms around his body, resting her head under his head, closing her eyes against the tears of happiness. Neither of them were sure how long they stayed there, but when Hailey moved, she found Jay's lips and they met in a soft, loving kiss and Jay wiped away her tears. In a loving voice, Hailey whispered, "Jay, we're getting a house!"
Resting his head against hers, Jay murmured, "And a baby, Hailes. Our baby." He smiled and told her, "Wherever we are, if I'm with you, I'm where I belong."
Never moving her head away from Jay's, Hailey reached for Jay's wedding ring, around his neck and told him, "We're together, no matter what, and, Jay, we're going to have our baby, soon. I didn't know that it was possible to be this happy, but I'm only this happy because of you. This is really happening, isn't it? This is our new chapter."
"This is our new chapter. Together." Jay added with a chuckle before his lips found Hailey's again and his hands went to her waist and her arms went around his neck. Into her ear, Jay whispered, "I love you, so much, Hailey Halstead." Their eyes met with so much love before they made their way to their bedroom. A baby. Their house. Their future was coming together, a day at a time and they would always be together, right where they belonged.
