Chapter 3: Shinji, where did you go?

"Ok kids, you just finished your last lap, now you have a free swim for the rest of the time," said the coach as she took her place at the lifeguard chair.
The so called 'circle of friends' were all having a splash fight.
"Take this Kaworu, TIDAL WAVE!" and a huge splash was planted on Kaworu.
Touji laughed triumphantly and the next thing he knew, he was underwater!
Kaworu was back up hand on Touji's head as he squirmed under there.
They all laughed after he got up.
"Ha! Never try to plant one on the sly guy!"
"Whatever, that won't happen again…"
After Asuka finished laughing at the stooge, she turned to see Shinji swimming around, 'Yes, this is my chance to finally talk to him…'
When she approached him, it seemed as if he was swimming faster and faster. She sighed as he swam right past her. But before she moved, she saw that the water was shaking slightly, then waves started to appear…
"SHINJI! COME BACK!" yelled Mana.
"COME ON, WE JUST WANT TO TALK TO YOU!" yelled Rei.
The two girls swam right over Asuka. She was pushed further into the deep end, and fell unconscious because one of the girls hit her in the head.
"bubbles" she let out as she drifted further down.
After Hikari just nailed a huge splash on Touji after he made fun of her, she noticed that Asuka was gone.
"Asuka? Where are you?" she frantically searched for her.
"Shinji! Ikari-kun! Have you seen Asuka?"
"Asuka? No…" he then looked around and looked down into the water and caught a quick glance of Asuka drifting down.
"Oh no!"
He quickly went into action and swam down into the deep end.
'Hang on Asuka, don't die on me please…'
He went faster and faster reaching out for her hand. He quickly grabbed her and went out of the water with her in his hands.
"pant Here she pant is." He placed her on the floor and the lifeguard came over.
"Oh no, she needs mouth to mouth!"
Shinji turned red, but he didn't want her to die so he went for it.
"-GASP-"went everyone.
Asuka woke with a start and gasped for air. She turned left to see a red faced Shinji, then right to see a relieved teacher, worried friends, and girls whispering to each other.
"They're just friends right?" whispered one.
"I think so, so he's available. He's so strong, strong willed and cute."
"I think so, but Mana and Rei have been fighting over him for so long."
"But what about Asuka?" said the last and they all quieted down.
"Wow, good job Shinji, extra marks for that."
"Arigato," he said quietly.
The students went back to swimming, and Kaworu, Touji, Kensuke, Hikari, Rei, Mana, and Shinji stayed around Asuka.
"Whoa, how did that happen demon?" asked Touji.
"Yeah, you really scared me there," said Hikari kneeling down next to her.
"Those two hit me on the head and everything turned blank from them on…" she pointed to Rei and Mana, and yelled at them, "BAKAS!"
"You two! You should be more considerate of where you go! Asuka almost died!" screamed Shinji as he stormed off.
"Hmph, why does he care so much?" said Mana pouting.
"They're childhood friends…" said Rei.
"I hope so," replied Mana.
"With the look in her eyes and his, we may have an obstacle here…" mumbled Rei as they walked back to the pool.
The rest stayed and sat next to Asuka making sure she was alright.
"Man, those girls are obsessed!" yelled Kensuke.
"I know, Shinji is so lucky he has two girls wanting him," said Touji.
"I'm sure there may be girls liking you, they may not be as confident as those two…" Hikari said turning red in the face.
Touji saw it and turned red himself, "I guess…"
"So Asuka, do you want to go to the nurse or something?" asked Hikari.
"No, you and Kaworu can go, I'll be with you in a moment," Asuka said and turned her head to the direction Shinji went.
"Ok then," said Kaworu.
"T-thank you Shinji for saving my life…"
Later on they went to class again and Misato gave them a lecture on her pet penguin Pen-Pen, and the students took notes and talked.
SilentWind: Hey Asuka are you ok?
RedDevil: Yeah, thanks for earlier.
ClassRep: That was amazing how quick you reacted!
SupaStud: Yeah, I never knew you had such quick reflexes.
SlyGuy: It's because he's such a good friend.
SilentWind: Aww shucks you're embarrassing me.
ClassRep: He's right, if it weren't for you she would've died!
RedDevil: Yeah, you saved my life!

The rest of the day went awkward like. Asuka and Shinji didn't speak, just a meer smile or wave or hello. Kaworu and Hikari were getting worried.
"Hey Kaworu, tell Kensuke and Touji to meet at my place. This situation is getting fuzzy, and I don't know what exactly is going on…"
