Chapter 9: Desire
Mimi left her apartment in her usual cheerful self late morning in that Saturday. With much effort, Jou's friend agreed to meet her, Taichi and Koushiro again and the two men were on their way to pick her up. By the time she closed the gate that led to the sidewalk, they were already waiting for her.
"Good morning!" She sat in the back seat of Taichi's car. "Am I late?"
"Good morning, Mimi. No, no, we just got here."
"Oh great. I'm so happy we have another chance to meet Jou's friend."
"She was really nice about it." Taichi said and looked at her through his rear view mirror.
"She was."
"Are you ready to go?"
"Yeah, let's go." Mimi put her seat belt on and they drove off.
.
Yamato opened his eyes when the smell of food invaded the bedroom. He tapped around the bedside table looking for his phone. He found it seconds later and picked it up to look at the time, causing his eyes to go wide and him to jump out of the bed almost immediately.
The first thing he heard when he walked into the hall was someone playing and he was sure it was Aiko. He was proven right when he arrived at the kitchen.
"Hey there." Sora smiled at him when she was about to walk into the living room. "I hope Aiko didn't wake you up."
"No, she didn't. I don't know why I woke up so late today, I'm usually awake much earlier than this."
"I'm sorry, I didn't know if I could wake you up sooner."
"That's okay." He assured her and went to check on their daughter. "Good morning, sunshine."
"Daddy!" Aiko stood up and threw herself into Yamato's arms.
"Did you sleep well?"
"Yes." She shook her head excitedly. "Mommy has a good bed."
"She does?" Yamato glanced at Sora briefly while he picked her up and stood up again. "Did you have… you know?"
"Yes, yes. I bought a bed not too long ago, just for a precaution. She already sleeps in a bed, right?"
"Not really. I tried to get her used to be, but hadn't succeeded. I'm surprised you managed to do it."
"Well, I guess it's the mother magic." She bragged with a large smile and drank a sip of coffee. "It's decaf, before you call me out."
"I wasn't going to say anything. Where's Kouji?"
"He's still on his crib. He woke up early feeling hungry. I breastfed him and he went back to sleep. He should wake up at any minute now."
"Do you think we should…?"
"I'm not sure. I mean, I'd love to, but we have to be careful about this."
"Yeah, you have a very good point. Besides, we're still undefined about where we stand."
"Baby, you spent the night here and we've been… together for the past two weekends. That's bound to mean something, don't you think?"
"Sora." Yamato said in a 'don't push it' tone.
"Alright, I'm sorry."
"We still have some things to work on. Everything's too recent and I still have no idea what happened to you in these past two years."
"You have a point." Sora took a deep breath. "I think it's time to be completely honest with you."
.
Mimi began to feel nervous while making her way to the restaurant she and the boys were going to meet Jou's friend, Sayuri Yukimura. She began to mumble a low sound, but it didn't go unnoticed by Koushiro.
"Is everything okay, Mimi?"
"What?" She shook her head and looked at him. "Everything is fine. I'm just apprehensive about the meeting. It makes everything more… real. I'm one step closer to becoming a mother, you know?"
"It must be a thrilling sensation. I'm a little nervous myself. It's just a conversation, but still… I can relate to what you just said."
She reached for his hand and grabbed it. "Are you more used to the idea of being a father now?"
"I am." He nodded. "I'm more comfortable with us being a usual type of family, but it's still a family."
"Family is not just about blood relations. A foster mother is also a mother. In the end it's about raising a child to be the greatest they can be."
"I completely agree with you." Taichi placed his hand on her shoulder and squeezed it lightly. "Are you ready to go inside and talk to her?"
"No." She confessed. "But let's do this."
.
Hikari arrived home after dropping Yamazaki at her parents' apartment for the weekend. She had the entire house for herself, since Takeru had to travel for work. She wasn't feeling well the past few days, so she stopped at the drug store to buy a pregnancy test. It has been lying on her sink since she took it, fifteen minutes ago. She didn't know why she was so scared, since it was something she and Takeru wanted and had talked about.
"Come on, Hikari. You can do this."
As soon as she had just stood up, her phone started ringing. She answered the call as she made her way to the bathroom.
"Hey!"
"Hey, how was your trip?"
"It was great! I arrived about an hour ago."
"Good. I'm glad everything went well."
"Thank you. Where's Yamazaki?"
"I left him with my parents for the weekend. I needed some time alone."
"Why? What happened?"
"I'm not feeling well lately."
"Lately?" Takeru asked confused. "But you didn't tell me anything."
"I know. I just wanted to make sure first."
"Make sure of what?"
"I took a pregnancy test on my way back earlier." Hikari walked into the bathroom and blatantly ignored the stick on the sink, sitting on the toilet vase.
"You think you're pregnant?"
"I might be. That's why I took a test."
"What did it say?"
"I don't know. I didn't have the courage to check it yet."
"Why not? Are you afraid it's positive?"
"No. I don't know why I'm afraid. I guess because everything is going to change. I mean, it changed with Yamazaki, but you know what I mean. Don't you?"
"I do, and I completely agree with you. So are you going to check the result?"
"We don't really have an option, do we?"
"Well, we can not know right now, but will find out eventually."
"That's a really good point." She took a deep breath and turned towards the sink. "Alright, here we go."
Hikari grabbed the stick and looked at it for a while, pouting. Takeru waited rather impatiently on the other side.
"So… what is it? One or two lines?"
"It's a digital test, actually. Eight weeks."
"Eight weeks? We're having another child then."
"That's right. I will take another one just in case."
"Do you think it's necessary?"
"With Yamazaki, we took three, remember? The second one was negative, even though the first was positive."
"Yeah, it's better to be thorough in this situation. I wish I was there with you right now."
"But you're here."
"I mean in person."
"I know, I was just teasing you." She smiled. "I'm sorry if it seemed like I waited for you to go away to do it, but it's something I didn't plan. It just came up."
"Don't worry about it. We'll celebrate when I come back." Takeru looked away for a moment. "I have to go now. Talk to you later?"
"Sure. Hey, Takeru."
"What?"
"You're not angry or upset at me, are you?"
"No, I'm not. I have to an appoint a meeting right now, so I have to hang up."
"Alright. Good luck."
"Thank you. I love you."
"I love you too. Bye."
.
"Look, Jou's over there." Koushiro pointed to a table in the back of the restaurant.
"I don't think I can do this." Mimi was so nervous she tried turning around and walking away, but both boys stopped her.
"Mimi, breathe." He said and started doing it himself. "Like this."
"It's just an informal conversation. You can do this. We'll be here for you."
"Remember this is all about your baby. You've wanted this for so long."
"You're right. This is all about my baby. It's all about our baby."
"Exactly."
"Let's go."
"Hello." Mimi said excitedly after she stopped by the table with Koushiro and Taichi beside her.
"Sayuri, these are Mimi Tachikawa, Taichi Yagami and Koushiro Izumi. They are the ones that were supposed to meet you last weekend. Guys, this is Sayuri Yukimura."
"Nice to meet you." Mimi ignored the blushing in her cheeks when she remembered the bad impression she has caused last time.
"Nice to meet you too."
"Thanks for agreeing to meet us again."
"We're sorry for any inconvenience we caused."
"That's alright." Sayuri assured them with a smile. "Everything is fine."
"Great."
"Is that him?" Mimi pointed to the baby in a baby chair.
"That's right. This is Kazuo."
"Hello, little boy!" She addressed to him and squealed when him grinned at her. "He's so adorable!"
"Thank you."
"As you can see, she loves children."
"It isn't too hard to guess."
"How old is he?"
"He's eight months old. He's just started crawling, so you can imagine the chaos it is sometimes." Sayuri turned to her son and gave him his pacifier. "But he's such a lovely boy."
"I'm sure he is."
"So tell us about your process. How did you decide to turn to a sperm donor and be a solo mom?"
"Well, I've always wanted to be a mother and my ex-husband didn't, so we got divorced though we still loved each other very much. At first I wanted to adopt, but I didn't match all the criteria for it. And then I found out about sperm bank, so I thought 'why not'? But I admit there are some prejudice about it. What about you, though? Why did you decide for sperm donor?"
"I'm not having any luck with relationships lately. I can't even remember when was the last time I had a boyfriend." She giggled for a moment. "Anyway, the age factor was a main reason. I don't want to have a baby after I'm thirty-five, you know?"
"I completely understand what you mean." Sayuri took a sip of her drink. "And how did you two get involved in the story?"
"Well, she asked us to be the baby's fathers." Koushiro replied. "It was an unexpected offer and there was a lot of talking until we said yes."
"So are you two a couple?"
"No, no. We're just roommates."
"I don't get it then."
"I didn't want to choose one of them." Mimi stepped in. "So basically both of them will donor the sperm and then we'll see which one they will use. So the baby will have one mother and two fathers. But I'll raise him or her alone. I don't want them to get attached into this situation and start dating at some point. It doesn't seem fair."
"That's very thoughtful." Sayuri said softly. "I hope everything works out for you three."
"Thank you."
"I would really love to stay and talk more, but I'm going to meet a possible candidate for babysitter in about half an hour. I hope I could help you somehow."
"You really did. Thank you so much for meeting us."
"Your son is really beautiful." Taichi made a funny face to him and he burst into laughter.
"He liked you."
"Taichi is great with kids."
"That's a great thing." She put her baby's bag over her shoulder and then grabbed the baby chair.
"Do you need any help with it?"
"No, I can handle it. Thanks." Sayuri assured them. "Well, it was nice meeting you all."
"You too, Sayuri."
.
Mimi and Taichi headed to her place, since Koushiro was going to spend the day with his parents. She put her keys on the bowl and looked over her shoulder towards him.
"You can make yourself comfortable. Do you want something to drink?"
"Do you have any beer?"
"I have champagne."
"That will do it."
"Can I confess something?" Mimi asked after she finished her first glass of champagne, about five minutes later.
"Of course."
"Sometimes I still want to have a biological child, but it's so frustrating not being able to find a real boyfriend."
"I can understand you." Taichi placed his glass on her table and turned to her. "I mean, you feel more pressured than me, but I have the same fear."
"Is there something wrong with me?" She cried.
"No, there's nothing wrong with you, Mimi. Never believe in that."
"I'm starting to think there is."
"There isn't." He grabbed her hands softly and they looked into each other's eyes. "You're an amazing person, Mimi. Don't ever forget that."
Mimi couldn't tell whether it was the effect of champagne or something else, but she had never realized how handsome Taichi was. Suddenly she felt a strong urge to touch his cheek, and so she did. He, on the other hand, felt his heart beating faster with her touch and could only think about how her red lips tasted like. Before he knew what he was doing, he leaned towards her and captured her lips in a deep and long kiss. She wrapped her arms around his neck as they lied down on her couch; her being under him. Taichi moaned into the kiss when Mimi slid her tongue into his mouth and it immediately got tangled up with his. It took him a lot of effort to break it up when he felt her hand under his pants, reaching for his penis to measure its length and thickness.
"We shouldn't be doing this." He whispered; his face only centimeters away from hers. Even if these words had come out of his mouth, his eyes were saying completely the opposite. His hand simply didn't obey his commands, and it was touching her left cheek softly.
"We're not doing anything wrong. We're both single and you want it just as much as me. Your face is giving it away." Mimi placed her hand on the back of his head and pulled it down towards hers; he made no objection against it and their lips were colliding against each other again, this time in a fiery and urgent kiss.
