Lt. Col. Samantha Carter stood in front of the only memorial to those who had lost their lives in a war most of the world didn't even know about. She couldn't tear her eyes away from the newest additions to the plain metal plaque.
The memorial service was long over; most of the people were gone. But still Sam stood there next to Lt. Col. John Sheppard mourning her teammates and remembering their deaths:
Daniel had burned before her eyes and Sam had been helpless to save him. Screaming at their captors, at the crowd of onlookers, cursing at them and struggling to save Daniel until there was nothing left of him to save. She had collapsed, sobbing, all of her strength gone.
Lt. Col. Cameron Mitchell and Teal'c had died to give Sam and Rodney the time they needed to fix the Ancient weapon. She had heard their yells of pain echoing against the walls and almost making her stop. If the screams had been horrible the silence that followed was a thousand times worse. Sam had finished her work through tears.
Dr. Rodney Mckay had been strangled even as Sam turned on the weapon that would save them all.
The rest of Sheppard's team had died defending the gate to the weapon's planet. They had found Colonel Sheppard barely alive among all the corpses.
They had won, yes; the Ori and Wraith were gone for good, but at what price? For Samantha Carter and John Sheppard the price had been too high. They had lost it all, their teams, their families, were gone, leaving them behind to pick up the pieces.
"What do we do now?" Col. Sheppard didn't direct the question at Sam and he wasn't really expecting an answer.
"We keep fighting." Sam whispered. John turned to her, startled and she met his eyes as she continued. "We don't let this break us, they wouldn't want that. They'd want us to keep going, keep fighting. And I'm not going to let down their memory. We'll see them again someday, but until then we have to stay strong." Sam's voice had gotten stronger as she spoke until she was talking normally.
John managed a half smile as he nodded and they turned to leave the room, there was a long, bumpy rode ahead of them, but they'd make it, together.
Daniel Jackson watched the whole exchange from another plain of existence and as the two soldiers left he turned too the others with a smile and said confidently, "They'll be alright." Cam, Teal'c, Rodney, Teyla, and Ronon offered their own smiles and agreements. Their friends would be okay they just needed time to adjust.
