"Lucas was right."

Katie had a sickening feeling she knew what Trip was talking about, but hoped she was wrong. "What are you talking about?"

Trip kept his eyes on the road. "I should've been able to figure out Ransik's plan."

So I was right. Great. Just great. "Lucas has no idea what he's talking about. It's not something you can use whenever you feel like, remember?" Katie glanced over at said teammate, currently arguing with Jen, and fought the urge to go over there and throttle him. "This is Ransik's fault, not yours."

There was no change in Trip. "Yes, but... back on my planet, there are others stronger than I am when it comes to reading minds. I bet any other Xybrian could have done it."

"But you're not any other Xybrian. And in case you didn't notice, none of us were exactly ruining Ransik's master escape plan, either." She paused for a moment, realizing she was coming off angrier than she was. What she needed to do was hold him and kiss him, not continue until he knew it would work out in the end somehow, but the situation was too dark, too grim for that. So instead Katie tightened the grip she already had around his shoulders and hoped that might ease his guilt.

He didn't talk; he didn't look at her... but the tension in his body faded a little. Katie let the relief wash over her; Trip would be okay, and yes things were still bad but Jen would come up with a plan and then--

Trip's body went rigid, like a jolt went through him. Alarmed, Katie tried to get his attention, but it became obvious he was watching something she couldn't see.

Great. Just great.

"Hey! He's receiving a signal!"
