Upon each step of every single pyramid, prowled millions of cats. And, at the very bottom of the very smallest pyramid, lay a white tom cat, a black molly and, tucked between their huddled forms, a tiny grey kitten.
Despite the symphony of yowls and meows surrounding her, the kitten was purring contentedly as her mother bathed her and her father nuzzled her with his whiskers. However, the kitten was roused when silence fell across the sea of pyramids.
In unison, every cat sat to attention, their eyes growing as wide as saucers as they gazed up at the glowing silver orb hanging amidst the black sky.
A shaft of light descended upon various cats, including the three felines at the bottom of the pyramid. Their foreheads ignited with silver-gold light, a crescent Moon 'smile' now adorning their brows, and the kitten felt a strange sensation grip her. With a gasp she felt her paws leave the ground and realised she and her parents were floating into the air!
It was only after they had risen above the pyramids themselves, that the kitten spotted a beautiful young woman in a skirt and neckerchief waving up at them from the peak of the highest pyramid.
"Well done! You've made us all very proud!"
The kitten, her parents and the other floating felines, waved back.
"Goodbye Sailor Mau! Goodbye everybody!" chirped the kitten.
Glancing over her shoulder, the kitten realised the Moon was looming larger than ever before. In a flash , the sea of pyramids had been replaced by a grand crystalline throne room littered with courtiers garbed in all manner of finery. Along with the other courtiers, the gaggle of cats bowed their heads in deference as a little blonde girl, in a sunset orange dress, prowled down the aisle leading up to the throne itself.
Peeking ever so slightly, the kitten experienced a jolt of excitement as the girl paused in front of her. Another jolt coursed through her as the little girl knelt down, extended her hands, and…scooped up her father…
By the time the blonde girl had stood up both she and the white tomcat had changed. The girl was now a woman, garbed in a white bodice, a blue bow and an orange skirt and neckerchief. The tomcat however was no longer a cat at all. In his place, a tall, lean, very handsome man, with long white hair almost as pale as his navel exposing clothes, stood at the woman's side.
"Your time will come," reassured the kitten's mother, trying to offset her disappointment.
After her father departed, the kitten tried to look brave as she bowed her head. Another girl, even younger than the first, had begun traversing the aisles. She had short pigtails that flowed from two twin buns crowning her head. Her hair was sometimes silver and sometimes blonde depending on how the light hit it and she seemed far more conspicuous than the first girl, her footfalls were haphazard and a faint humming was emanating from her lips. Suddenly, the girl yelped as she tripped over the hem of her white dress, an ear splitting wail escaping her after she fell.
"Oh my!" the black molly exclaimed, breaking ranks to attend to the crying child as she gripped her knee. The child's wailing gradually subsided as the black feline tenderly licked her bruised knee. Once the girl had stopped crying altogether she hugged the ebony cat close to her and stood up.
Her eyes growing watery, the kitten watched as her mother's feline features morphed into those of a beautiful young woman in a sunflower yellow dress and curly black hair. For her part, the girl now stood tall and elegant, a crown nestled between her twin hair buns. Together, she and the kitten's mother walked down the throne room aisle and out of sight.
The little grey kitten bowed her head again, but this time only to conceal the tears that were now streaking down her furry face.
"Do not cry little one."
Looking up, the grey kitten could, through bleary eyes, make out a tall, dark haired man in a white (or was it lavender) tuxedo and cape. The man smiled down at the kitten kindly before spreading his cape wide, giving it a flourish and, with a side step, wrapping it around himself, unveiling a third little girl.
For the most part, she strongly resembled the second youngster, except she had large red eyes rather than blue, and bubblegum pink hair instead of blonde. She gasped upon sighting the grey kitten and immediately bent down, coming face to face with her.
"Would you please consider-"
The grey kitten didn't even let her finish.
"Yes! Of course I would!"
The kitten leapt towards the girl's open arms. By the time they had embraced one another, the little kitten had become a little girl, the hem of her blue-grey skirt fluttering as she flew through the air.
Arm in arm with the pink haired princess, the pair marched down the aisle. As they reached the throne, the girl who had once been a kitten again found herself nestled between the now human forms of her parents.
In unison, her parents whispered something to her: "Well, done Diana."
"Diana?" said a soft voice.
Diana looked over her shoulder, where she beheld a majestic winged horse and its rider.
"Apologies for disturbing you but…it's time to go."
Diana let out a small regretful sigh. "Alright Master…"
"...Helios."
Eyes fluttering open, Diana yawned and uncurled herself, exiting the basket and stretching out.
Sufficiently alert after her catnap, Diana proceeded to trot out of her chambers, seeking out her youngest charge.
With tears in her eyes, Diana watched as the little princess and the grey tabby kitten embraced one another.
"Her time has finally come," Diana said quietly, more to herself than anyone else. Nevertheless, out the corner of her left eye, she spied her eldest charge leaning down to whisper in her ear.
"You must be so proud, Diana."
The grey cat beamed up at the pink haired Queen "Indescribably so, your Majesty."
"As were we when your time came."
Smiling, Diana turned to the elderly black cat to her right.
"Rest assured, Phoebe will serve the Princess well, my Queen," said the equally elderly white cat next to her.
"Oh, I know she will, after all…" Queen Lady Serenity's gaze roamed over Luna and Artemis before her crimson eyes locked with those of her oldest friend's, "...it runs in the family."
A/N: Hope this fic wasn't too weird for you all.
I knew I needed to celebrate Diana, but, bless her…she's a bit of a thin character, in the anime more so than anywhere else. So, I decided to make this a mixed canon fic whilst also including Luna and Artemis (their manga interpretations kind of getting shortchanged looking back at their fics) and also incorporate their human forms.
Whilst Diana didn't debut in 1992, I did feel it was appropriate to post this fic today, on the 30th anniversary of Sailor Moon Classic episode 33, i.e. the first appearance of Artemis in the anime.
Also, just to let you know I am involved in a discord called 'Moonlight Legends' which is dedicated to sharing all sorts of Sailor Moon fanworks, including other fanfics. If you would like to join so you can share your own work, get help with your current projects or just connect to other fan creators shoot me a PM and I'll send you an invite. All are welcome!
