It had been a week since Dr. Burke's arrival and Cristina had been able to successfully avoid the handsome doctor. Cristina was walking down the surgical wing with George discussing a case they had when Cristina's avoidance techniques failed. She was so engrossed in the patients medical history that she did not see whom it was she was about to run into.
The file in Cristina's hand fell to the ground. She instantly got down to pick up the papers and began to say her apologies to the person she had run into. "I am sorry, I wasn't paying attention to where I was going." Cristina said.
"That's all right. I've actually been trying to seek you out," Burke said as he offered a hand to help Cristina get up off of the floor.
When Cristina looked up she held the same deer caught in the headlights look she had the first time she had seen him back at Seattle Grace walking the halls.
George looked at the scene before him and quickly decided it was time to make his exit. "I'm going to go check on a patient," He stammered as he walked off.
"You're a hard person to track down Cristina," Burke said after George had nervously walked off.
"Oh,"
"You weren't avoiding me were you?" He asked.
"Maybe," Cristina said as she began to walk away.
"Cristina I want to talk to you sometime. Do you think that's possible?" Burke asked keeping up with her fast pace and eventually stopping in front of her.
"Burke I don't know. Right now I have work to do if you'll excuse me," Cristina said side stepping the tall man and continuing on her previously laid course.
Burke stood and watched her walk off. He would give her time but he was determined to talk to Cristina. As she turned a corner he turned around and continued to work.
At lunch, Cristina, George and Meredith were sitting at an outside table eating lunch.
"I heard you had a run in with Dr. Burke today, literally," said Meredith as she rearranged her sandwich.
"George why did you tell Meredith?" Cristina asked as she raised her plastic knife around in a threatening gesture.
"I didn't know it was a secret, you always tell Meredith everything any way, I just figured…"
"Well you figured wrong you didn't have to go and tell her, now I'm never going to hear the end of it," Cristina nearly yelled.
"Hello, I'm right here," Meredith said.
"I know that Meredith." Cristina exclaimed forcefully.
"Well, then tell me what happened after you ran into him," said Meredith wanting to know all of the details.
"He wants to talk,"
"And?"
"And what? I have nothing to talk about with him,"
"Only a four and a half year old daughter," George supplied under his breath. He was not officially apart of this particular conversation.
Cristina stared at him and threatened him once again with her plastic knife.
"I take that as my cue to leave," George said picking up his tray. "Before I leave though I have to say Cristina this is the first time I've been threatened with a plastic knife." He then made a swift exit, leaving the two friends to chat.
After George's departure silence fell over the table. Cristina swung her knife around, while Meredith had begun on her desert. "He needs to know," Meredith stated.
"What for? Morgan has been perfectly fine without her father."
"You have been perfectly fine, I don't know about Morgan though. Take it from me a father is important in a girls life. You don't want her to be the girl who can't go to the father daughter dance because she doesn't have a father." Meredith said.
"I'll think about it, but I can't make any promises, I'm trying to do what's best for my daughter and I'm not quite sure telling Burke is it. Whose to say he won't leave again because he found a better position some where else"
"Burke is not that type of person everyone knows that."
"I bet you thought your father wasn't that type of person either," Cristina said.
"That was uncalled for and you know it Cristina," Meredith said gathering the remains of her lunch and walking away.
Cristina threw the plastic knife onto the tray and leaned back in her chair. Maybe it was time to have dinner with a certain cardio-vascular surgeon. Getting up she made up her mind to take Burke up on the offer to talk.
After lunch she went in search of Dr. Burke, hoping to catch him before she lost the nerve. She found him at the nurses' station going over a chart. She walked up beside him and waited until he finished what he was doing.
Burke lifted his head from the file he was reading to find Cristina staring back at him. "Hey," he said closing the file.
"Look, I'm taking you up on the offer to talk. I looked and saw you get off before me so maybe you could wait around and we could grab some dinner at a diner or something," Cristina said.
"Are you asking me out on a date?" Burke asked with an amused look on his face. He had never thought she would come to him and agree to talk.
"No this is strictly to just talk. I'll even pay for my own meal, but this in no way even remotely close to a date." She said.
"Alright, I'll wait for you in the lobby," Burke said.
"Good," Cristina then walked off to find Meredith; she needed to apologize for what was said at lunch.
She found Meredith two hours later standing at the coffee break kiosk with a cup of coffee in her hand. "Meredith," Cristina called trying to get her friends attention.
"Hey," Meredith said in a dejected tone.
"Look I'm sorry about lunch. I had no right to say what I did to you; it was mean and uncalled for." Cristina said
"Apology accepted. What do you want?"
"How do you know I'm not just apologizing because you are my friend and I love you like a sister?" Cristina asked.
"Because you never apologize so soon after you do something
wrong."
"Could you watch Morgan tonight. I don't want to
leave her with Ms. Porter later than I said I would. I'm taking
your advice and talking to Burke,"
"Good for you. And of course I'll watch Morgan. We always have so much fun together." Meredith smiled.
AN: I know, I know this chapter has a lot of stuff in it that could have been separated into smaller chapters, but then I would fail to meet a standard I placed for myself. Besides I think y'all would like it better if I put it all in one chapter, then you wouldn't have to wait. (Do not say anything about the y'all I am from NC so deal with it)
