A Glass One-Hundredth Full
"I understand your concern, Ayame, but-"
"No, you don't. You say your fine, but that's not good enough, Tori-san! I won't settle for fine, I want you to be happy! I would do anything for that one wish, that you could be happy, two thousand times happier than you could be with her!"
Hatori smiled a soft, bittersweet smile.
"Ayame, you've seen what happens to the people who love the cursed, they always get hurt in the end."
"Someone who loves you as much as you deserve wouldn't allow you to push them away like that!"
"That's not fair, Ayame, no one should have to bear that burden."
"So find someone who has to anyway- Maybe Kagura, she's someone who loves with all her heart, and you know it will never work out between her and Kyon Kichi, or Ritsu, if you don't mind his being a boy, because you know when he smiles he really is beautiful, or-"
"They are young, and besides, you know how Akito gets when a man in the zodiac falls in love with someone else."
"Someone who loves you should be willing to take that chance, I-" Ayame, realizing what he had been about to say, pursed his lips and looked away.
"You would be willing to risk your own life, but would you be willing to risk mine?" Ayame looked up, horror in his eyes, about to protest. "No, Ayame, I need you to hear me. How much of me would you be willing to sacrifice for this silly indulgence? My good eye? Maybe just a hideous scar that would scare others off? It may seem worth the risk to you, but I'm fine where I am, I won't take any more chances."
Hatori stared sadly at his childhood companion. Ayame's eyes were downcast, his posture slumped slightly.
"Ayame…"
"Tori-san?"
"Yes?"
"Why are we here?"
"Not now, Ayame-"
"It's important. What do you think is the point of living?"
Hatori opened his mouth, and Ayame cut him off. "And don't answer lightly, think about it."
Hatori stood in silence, pondering the question. What is the point of living? "I'm not sure. What do you think?"
"Me?" Ayame said, staring up at his dear Hatori. Ayame stood up, and, while passing Hatori, said simply, "I think the whole point of living is to live."
Hatori smiled his bittersweet smile, and followed Ayame into the house, where he could already hear the sound of his two dearest friends declaring their undying love at the top of their lungs.
End
Extraordinarily short, I realize, but that's just how it came out.
