Summary: Dark thinks back on how things have changed in the past three hundred years.
You know, when this curse was first set, things were a lot easier for me. An artist had created my reality, and it had been modeled after his own. So, when Krad and I were put in this world, we had none of the disorientation and trouble some of the more fantastical artwork had.
Things began to change, however. Technology started to progress, and I watched through the eyes of my Tamers as villages turned into cities, and farming land was bought as to bring factories in.
To an unending existence like me, the world seemed to go fast-forward into an era Krad nor I could have ever imagined. I don't believe even the creepily omniscient Hikaris had expected things to have changed as quickly as they did.
However, the change seemed ethereal and far away to me. I did not think that it would ever affect me. But, eventually progress even touched me. I noticed candles and lamps being replaced with electrical lights around the beginning of the twentieth century. I gave up my traditional clothes for Western style clothes a generation after the second World War. It was after that time that the families started thinning, and I watched morosely as my family was forced to leave the two hundred year old family mansion in favor of a smaller, Western style house closer to the arts district. I flew over the Hikari mansion during my thefts and saw the Hikari mansion falling into disrepair, and fewer Hikaris glowered at me silently as I passed by. Then, during the sixties I was introduced to two things—electronic security systems a marvelous new type of clothing material, leather. No matter what times bring about clothing changes, I doubt anything will ever compliment me as leather has.
My thieving style had to change as well—I went abruptly from the Hikaris using nothing but magic, simple traps, and their strength in numbers and katanas to lasers, electronic trap doors, and password protection. My tamers went from being trained in the fighting, magic, and the thieving arts to being stealthy electronic whizzes capable of both dodging Krad's attacks and being able to shut down state of the art computer systems. However, the half-mad Hikari family now has technology at their disposal as well, and if someone a little less sane then Hiwatari Satoshi is born into the family in the future, I'm in deep trouble.
However, some things never change. Krad still, after all these years, wears a white silk jacket and a pair of gloves. His fighting technique still only consists of flying aerobatics and magic, but I'm perfectly happy for him to stay that way. I dread the day Krad finally decides to use modern weaponry against me.
In a way, though, I'm envious. He hasn't been forced to leave his comfort zone to experience a new world that will be infinitely different the next time I waken in a Tamer.
However, when Kosuke asked me one night if I could go back to the way used to be, would I? I had sat there for a few moments, mulling it over. Finally, I turned to him with a smirk on my face.
"Not for anything in the world."
