Zack has to wonder why Hojo didn't see it coming. It's what the scientist has been saying for months– the human mind and body are like a machine, a lever. If you put a certain amount of pressure on one end, the other moves. Hojo has been testing this, putting strain on his body while he does a series of puzzles to test his mental performance, using greater amounts of force to see what happens to his completion time. Hojo has been lying to him, telling him things, to see what physical reactions he can provoke.
Hojo had taken Cloud out of the tank, and made Zack do the puzzles while Hojo cut into Cloud's skin, making him scream until Zack couldn't take it. He'd broken the restraints on the chair and gotten his hands around Hojo's throat before the lab assistant had injected him with the drug that made him sleep.
The next day at feeding time, Zack got them out.
The strength of a lever is all in the positioning of the fulcrum.
