His father doesn't actually care about running his company, Rufus thinks. As long as the press and the general public treat him like he's the one in control, President ShinRa is happy.
This is both good and bad for Rufus. It gives him time, and the opportunity to gently nudge the company into the position he'll want it to be in when he takes over. However, some of the department heads, having had a taste of power, are getting hungry for more. If his father isn't careful, he may disappear someday. Which will complicate things for Rufus, because directly inheriting the company is better for P.R. than taking it back in a bloody coup. And, because he is only the Vice President and not the President, he doesn't have the clearance or resources he needs to uncover plots against his father, which will quickly become plots against him when he succeeds to power.
It irritates him when his father reprimands him in front of the other executives, in order to save face. It's a stupid move that can only create tensions and threaten the future of the company. He knows his father must have been intelligent, must have known how to run a company at one time. He isn't sure if the old man drank himself stupid or if he's just gotten lazy. His money is on stupid, because that's what his father has to be to covet the illusion of power rather than the real thing. But Rufus learns from his father's mistakes.
