Hi everyone! PrimroseRaspberry here. Before I begin the story, I feel like I should say something, since unlike the other stories I published here so far, this one kind of has a lot of memory in it.
I've actually been working on this particular fanfic since I was a kid, and I made four versions of it (three were called "The Biggest Search Ever" and the fourth, which I did in my pre-teens, was called "Revelation Of The Lovebunnies") before I decided to make a fifth version: this one.
Many fun experiences from when I was kid led to me creating this story and its many versions. The first was when I started watching "Octonauts," and the show became my absolute favourite (and it still is). Then a few months later, a boy I was friends with introduced me to the book series "Amulet," and I grew curious enough about the series to eventually give it a read. Ever since then, I began writing crossover fanfics about Miskit from "Amulet" and Tweak from "Octonauts" going on adventures together. I just always pictured them as a dynamic duo, knowing they have quite a few things in common. Over time, I got older, and I started picturing those two as more than just a dynamic duo. I know some Octonauts fans have shipped Tweak with Kwazii or Captain Barnacles, but personally, as crazy as it may sound, I've always been a Twiskit shipper.
So yeah; this story has a lot of memories for me. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I've always enjoyed writing it. :)
Chapter 1
It was a beautiful sunny morning in the city of Norlen. Three new citizens were currently on their way to the forest area, with the intention of moving in. However, their arrival wouldn't be for a while.
On the other hand, quite a few other arrivals had come to the beach behind the forest area of Norlen twenty minutes ago. Not from the land, but from the water. It was probably a good thing that no one else was at the beach today, for they would have been greatly taken by surprise. These particular arrivals weren't exactly the kind that any human would have expected to see. They were the Octonauts, a group of different animals who explored the oceans together, saved the creatures who lived there, and learned about them in the process. As a reward for a rather tough mission yesterday, their leader, Captain Barnacles, had decided that the crew could spent the day at the nearest beach.
Each member of the team was having fun, one way or another. Kwazii, Shellington, and Dashi were examining shells, Barnacles and Professor Inkling were chatting, Tweak and Peso were building a sand castle, and the vegimals were playing catch with a tennis ball someone had left on the sand. Tunip was simultaneously bouncing up and down on the trampoline Tweak had built for him last night, which made the game of catch more fun every time his friends threw the ball to him.
After throwing the ball to the other vegimals, Tunip shouted something to the rest of the crew. Since the vegimals spoke in a language only he could understand, Shellington told the others, "He says he wants us to join him on the trampoline."
Dashi stopped what she was doing and quickly headed for the trampoline. "Watch out, Tunip!" she hollered, and with one leap, she was on the trampoline too.
One of the vegimals caught the ball, and seeing Dashi was on the trampoline now too, he threw it towards her. She caught it just as she landed on the trampoline, and then suddenly bounced higher than she had so far, doing a pirouette in midair before landing again.
"You call that jumping?" Kwazii boasted, having noticed her move, "I'll bet I can go ten times as high as you can, catch the ball, and throw it back to the vegimals before even landing!"
Dashi laughed, but Barnacles looked uncertain. He tried to warn Kwazii to be careful, but the pirate cat was already running forward and doing a flip in midair. He landed on the trampoline hard, and as he flew past her, perhaps a little too high into the air, Dashi threw the ball to him. Kwazii caught it, did a flip in midair, and managed to throw it just before his descent began, but he was so focused on showing off that he threw the ball too hard. It sailed right over the forest, and the Octonauts heard the sound of glass breaking on the other side. Distracted by the sound, Kwazii landed on his rear end, bounced backward, and bumped into Tunip.
"What was that?" Dashi asked, referring to the sound she'd heard from the other side of the forest.
Tweak shrugged, picked up her toolbox, and headed for the forest. "I'll go get the ball," she said.
"I'd better go with you, me hartie," said Kwazii, getting off the trampoline, "I hear this is the forest that holds the door to one of the most powerful beasts of all!"
"In that case, I'll go too," decided Barnacles. Kwazii's pirate fables usually resulted in him getting into trouble, and the captain didn't want his lieutenant to accuse innocent creatures of being horrible beasts again.
While everyone else stayed on the beach, Barnacles, Kwazii, and Tweak wandered through the forest until they came across a big old house. One of the windows on the second floor had a hole in the glass that was tennis ball sized, explaining the sound they heard.
Barnacles went toward the front door and tried to open it, but it was locked. He tried knocking on the door, but there didn't seem to be anyone home.
Kwazii narrowed his eyes. "Those amulet-wielding monsters! They must have found the owners of this house before we could!"
"Hold on," said Tweak, "maybe I can get us in there." She pulled a screwdriver out of her toolbox and placed it into each of the two keyholes in the door, and with some effort, she was able to pick the locks open. The door creaked open, and the trio went inside.
"Shiver me whiskers!" Kwazii exclaimed as they stepped into the house. Although it was old and clearly needed some repairs and cleaning, the house was very big and fancy. The entrance hall was humongous, with a flight of stairs to the left of the room. Next to the stairs stood two doorways.
After searching the main level and not finding the ball, Barnacles decided it was probably upstairs, so they went up the stairs. While her friends searched the other areas of the second floor, Tweak entered what she assumed was an old library. There, much to her surprise, she found someone standing in front of a table. She couldn't tell who it was because the person was wearing a brown cloak, with a hood over their head. Next to the person and on the floor, however, was the vegimals' ball.
Tweak hesitated for a moment. Whoever was at the table clearly lived in this house, and they probably wouldn't be too happy about her and her friends coming in without permission. But the person seemed very busy doing whatever they were doing, and the ball was right there. She could just take it, sneak out, and lock the door again. The owner of the house would never know.
Suddenly a mild gust of wind blew past the person's head. He turned around to see where it had come from, and that was when he saw Tweak. As both of them got startled, Tweak noticed that this guy was a pink rabbit. His ears were covered by the hood of his cloak, but she was able to see his face and body (which she noticed had a slightly darker patch sewn on it) very well.
The rabbit suddenly adopted a stern expression. He shifted, as though debating whether or not to get into a battle stance. "Who are you? How did you get in here?" he asked.
"I just…picked the locks," admitted Tweak, holding up her toolbox, "My friends and I were at the beach near your house, and one of my friends accidentally threw a ball through the window." She frowned. "Why didn't you just let us in?"
The rabbit thought for a bit and was about to speak, when Kwazii and the captain arrived. They noticed the pink rabbit there, and froze.
"It's okay guys," said the rabbit, "Um, you see…a family bought this house, and uh, as the realtor, it's my job to guard the house until its new owners arrive. And I was giving them an amulet as a welcome home present."
"Why don't you just give it to them in person?" Barnacles asked.
"Because no one's supposed to know I'm not human," said the rabbit, "I mean, this city's a human city, and they don't expect to see talking animal robots." Then he quickly covered his mouth, as though he'd just said something he wasn't supposed to say.
Tweak was surprised. "You're…you're a robot?"
The rabbit didn't say anything. He just stared at the floor, looking nervous and a little guilty.
"No, it's okay," Tweak said, "I'm not afraid of you. You don't have to be ashamed of who you are."
"It's not that," the robot quickly replied, "They just…can't know."
Kwazii, who had been unusually quiet since they'd entered this room, stepped forward. He was studying the robot as though he had seen him from somewhere before. The robot noticed Kwazii, and then he began studying him too. Then, after hesitating a little, the rabbit spoke. "Okay, let's start over. I think I'd better say something I should have said sooner…are you guys from Earth, or Alledia?"
"We're from Earth," Barnacles replied, confused.
Kwazii, who had been about to say something, stared at the captain in shock. "Captain, that's him! That's one of the robots who rebelled against the amulet-wielding beasts!"
Barnacles looked a little embarrassed. "I…I think we'll get going now. Could you, uh—"
"Sure," said the robot. He picked up the ball and tossed it to Barnacles, who caught it. He then left with Kwazii, but Tweak stayed put. She wanted to make sure nothing they'd said had hurt the robot's feelings or something.
"Sorry about that," said Tweak, "He always tells stories about beasts, but almost none of them are true."
"It's okay," reassured the robot, "He didn't offend me. The truth is, I think I met one of his relatives once. And he was right. My friends and I…really are fighting against amulet-wielding beasts." He sheepishly glanced at the amulet he had placed on the table and whispered, "In fact…don't tell anyone, but the real reason I put this amulet here was because my inventor thinks the house's new owners could help with the fight someday."
Tweak remembered how often Kwazii told the crew about his grandfather, Calico Jack. She had a feeling he was the relative the robot had met a while ago. That would also explain why the robot had looked at Kwazii the way he did…
The robot held out his hand, giving a friendly smile. "My name is Miskit."
"I'm Tweak."
They shook hands, and then Miskit turned his attention back to the table behind him. He flipped the tabletop side with the amulet over and out of sight, making way for the other side: a metal panel with a hand print on it. After placing a book on top of the panel, Miskit walked towards a window. Seeing a dark green car parking in front of the house's front door, he jumped. "Oh no, they're here!"
Tweak looked out the window on the opposite wall—the one the ball had smashed through—and peered into it. To her relief, she could see Kwazii and the captain were both outside, making their way back to the beach. Neither of them seemed to be aware that she was still in the house, let alone that its new owners would soon be in it as well.
"Follow me," Miskit instructed. He took Tweak by the paw and led her up the stairs to the third floor, where they pushed a big crate forward and hid behind it. A few seconds passed, and they heard the front door open. Three pairs of footsteps began wandering around the main level.
Tweak turned to Miskit, trying to be as quiet as she could. "What's Alledia?"
Miskit waved his arms around, motioning for her to not say a word.
"They're two levels below us," she whispered, "they're not going to hear us!"
Miskit sighed quietly. "Alledia is where I live," he explained through whispers, "It's an alternate version of this planet. When my inventor and I first met your friend's relative, we all thought he was from Alledia too."
"No, he isn't. Kwazii said he's from the Amazon."
"Kwazii?"
"The pirate cat you just met."
Miskit nodded. "And…your other friend?"
"That was Captain Barnacles. We're all in a team that explores and helps the oceans, and he's the leader."
They paused their conversation to make sure the house's new owners were still on the main floor. Thankfully, they had decided to clean the rooms down there before going upstairs, so they had a few more minutes. Since they couldn't escape as long as the front door was blocked, Miskit took the opportunity to apologize for the miscommunication earlier. The reason why he'd initially lied about being a realtor was because he at first thought Tweak and her friends knew nothing about Alledia, which was supposed to remain a secret anyway. But after seeing Kwazii, he'd realized how unconvincing his story must have sounded to him.
Miskit also got to learn about his new friend's lifestyle. He seemed delighted to hear she was the Octonauts' mechanic, and impressed when she described some of the submarines and other inventions she'd made in the past. She also told him about her teammates and some of the adventures they'd had together, all of which impressed him even more.
"Sounds like you're very talented and good at your job," whispered Miskit.
Tweak nodded. "It's fun, but…sometimes it's tiring work. Especially with Kwazii showing off and Shellington crashing the gups so many times."
"I know how you feel. Lately I've been having some tough times too. My inventor's sick, and…one of the other robots he built isn't exactly helping us think positive."
Tweak chuckled, and then quickly fell silent as she heard someone coming upstairs and arriving on the second floor. Swiftly looking around, Miskit pulled a welding mask out from Tweak's toolbox and used one of its corners to slowly but surely slice through one of the crate's sides. This created a way inside of it, allowing them to hide there. As Tweak closed up the exit, Miskit realized there wasn't much space in the crate, since there was already a great amount of robot supplies in there. It was also very dark. He kept close to Tweak, hoping they wouldn't have to stay in there for too long.
They heard the footsteps wander around, and then stop. Then there was silence. Through the tiny gaps of light between the cracks in the crate, Miskit saw Tweak tense up a little in fear, her ears looping around each other. He held her paws, hoping to comfort her without making any noise. She put down her toolbox and held his hands.
"Emily?…Hey Mom! Come see what Em found!"
Tweak tightened her grip on Miskit's hands as they heard someone else enter the room below them. They heard a third person enter the room as well, and a conversation began, though everything the family said was muffled, and the duo couldn't make out much of their words. Soon they heard someone coming up the stairs to the third floor, and in an attempt to comfort his friend, Miskit led her closer to him, into a hug.
"Navin! Get down from there!"
"Come on, Mom! I'll be alright! There's nothing up here but old junk!"
Miskit had a feeling the house's new owners were probably going to be in this room for a while. He placed a hand on Tweak's shoulder, and she calmed down a little. When they heard the boy named Navin come down the steps a minute later, they both relaxed.
After another minute went by, Miskit made his way to the other side of the crate, peering through one of the cracks. Curious, Tweak went over and peered through it as well. The woman who had told Navin to come down had left the room, but her kids were still on the second floor. The girl, whom Tweak knew had to be Emily, had just moved the book she'd seen to the side, revealing the metal panel. She placed her hand on the print, and instantly, rays of bright light flew out of the table as its top flipped over again, revealing the amulet Miskit had placed on the other side. Emily picked up the amulet, the children said a few things to each other, and then Navin tied the amulet around Emily's neck. Then Emily left.
Tweak turned to Miskit, who seemed glad that Emily had discovered the amulet. Through the tiny crack of light in front of their faces, she could see the smile on his face, and a warm, comforting feeling began to spread through its way through her. She found herself putting her arm around Miskit, which clearly surprised him a little. Quickly, she recoiled, trying to take her mind off what just happened by peering at the second floor again. They saw Navin was looking upward, thinking he might have heard something, but he shrugged it off and ran back downstairs.
Tweak started to ask Miskit how they were going to escape the house without its owners seeing them, when suddenly they heard another pair of footsteps heading to the third floor's balcony—which was right in front of the crate. Wait a second. If Navin, Emily, and their mother were downstairs and Kwazii and Barnacles were outside, who had just come toward the balcony?
Miskit and Tweak peered through the crate's crack and saw not one, but two very strange beings at the balcony. One of them was a floating, ghost-like gooey monster with black, line-shaped pupils in its eyes. The other was a creature in a dark cloak that was almost human, except for his silver hair, exceptionally pointy ears, and grey skin. They could just make out a glowing cyan amulet resting around the second being's neck.
Miskit's eyes went wide, and he quickly crouched away from the crack, motioning for Tweak to do the same. Although confused, she obeyed him. They waited there for ten minutes before Miskit decided to look through the crack again. "They're gone," he whispered, "I'd better bring you outside before they return."
"But what about the house's owners?"
"Tweak, the two creatures who were just over there are bad news. If they catch us, they could take us hostage…or worse."
"Why would they take us hostage?!"
"I'll explain later. Trust me, we have to leave."
Tweak nodded, and Miskit reopened the entrance he'd created. With him leading the way, they left the crate, looked around, and went downstairs to the second floor. Miskit checked the balcony to make sure the family wasn't near the front door, but thankfully they were just heading into the basement to see what it was like down there. The coast was clear, and without another word, Miskit and Tweak rushed downstairs and out the front door, making sure they closed it very quietly so the family wouldn't hear.
Once they were outside, Tweak let out a big sigh of relief. "Thanks."
"You're welcome," he replied. He paused, and then added, "I think you should get back with your friends before they start to worry."
"Sure thing, Miskit." Tweak turned to leave, but then stopped herself. She slowly turned back toward Miskit, for some reason feeling a bit nervous even though they were safe. "Actually, uh…do you want to…spend some time at the beach together?"
Miskit hesitated. "I don't know. My inventor's sick, and as his assistant, the other robots are counting on me to help in any way I can…"
"But breaks don't come all that often," Tweak insisted, "Whenever you get the chance, you have to take it."
"Alright, I'll come," said Miskit, "But just until twilight. An elf stonekeeper in that house can't be a good sign, and I need to get back to Alledia soon in case Miss Emily and her family will need my help."
"Deal," agreed Tweak. Miskit smiled, and they held hands as they walked to the beach.
While they walked, Tweak found herself unable to stop glancing at Miskit, and she also realized she still felt inexplicably nervous. What was going on? They weren't in any danger anymore, so there was no need to be nervous! Then again, this wasn't exactly a nervous feeling like the ones she'd experienced in the past. She wasn't quite sure what it was, but it certainly wasn't fearing something bad would happen during a mission with her friends. It was, she realized at that moment, more of an irresistible urge to impress Miskit. Maybe it had something to do with how much they had in common, or maybe it had something to do with how nice and protective he was being to her. Or maybe it was simply the fact that the way he smiled was…kind of cute.
Cute?! What in the world was up with her today?
Well, that's it for Chapter 1. Please feel free to write what you thought about it in the reviews, and see you soon, in Chapter 2! :)
