"Worst Dressed Character"
JP had assumed that the first time reuniting with his friends since their journeys in the Digital World would be an effortless afternoon. With barely two weeks having passed since they had defeated Lucemon, he expected reminiscing and laughter in equal parts, as well as a sense of relief that came from no longer dealing with life and death scenarios. He did not expect to be put under a microscope.
It started as he approached the group of Takuya, Tommy, Koji, and Koichi, who seemed to exchange comments as he approached their corner of the park and continued to give him funny looks after initial greetings. A few seconds was enough for JP to finally crack under the pressure.
"Why are you guys staring?" he asked calmly.
Glances were exchanged and no answers were given. Koichi turned to his twin, who himself turned away from all of them in typical Koji fashion. Tommy looked around innocently, seemingly ready to answer, only he never got the chance.
"It's..." Takuya began slowly, pausing to scratch the back of his head. "...nothing. Let's forget it."
JP crossed his arms. "No, it's obviously something. I wanna hear it."
"I mean..." Takuya was hesitating, something he had only ever done on rare occasions. "It's just..."
"They were wondering why you were dressed like that," Tommy explained, keeping the straightest face of the lot of them.
"Like what?" JP looked down at his lucky jumpsuit, the one that had gotten him through their battles in the Digital World.
"In a onesie," Takuya blurted out, almost like he couldn't hold it in any longer.
JP's eye twitched. "It's comfortable, it's secure, and I like it."
"Yeah, obviously..."
JP shook his head, almost unable to find words. "We spent all that time in the Digital World and none of you seemed to have a problem then."
Takuya shrugged. "Honestly, I assumed it was your laundry day."
"Do you all feel this way?" JP turned his attention to the twins, who hadn't moved much since the conversation began.
"No, of course not," Koichi answered, being a surprisingly bad liar for someone who was formerly the Legendary Warrior of Darkness.
"So you would wear one?"
"It's a brave choice." Koichi put on a reassuring smile. "Especially with those colors."
"It's blue and yellow." JP's voice rose slightly, though he did his best to stay in control. "Koji wears those colors."
Koji glanced at him before turning away again. "I'm not part of this conversation."
JP jabbed a finger in his direction. "You are more than you think!"
Feelings of betrayal began to overtake JP. After everything they had been through together, he had assumed he had finally found a group of friends he could trust with his life. If this impromptu intervention was any indication, that was not the case, and there was nothing and no one who could make things right.
"What's up, guys?"
All heads turned, just as Zoe approached and completed the reunion of the Legendary Warriors. Wide, curious eyes were a sign that she hadn't heard anything up to this point.
"They don't like my jumpsuit!" JP shouted, deciding that he wanted everyone to know just how upset he was.
"It is a little loud." Zoe placed a hand on her chin and looked him up and down. "Give me thirty minutes at the nearest shopping mall, and I bet I could find you something else that you would like and look good on you."
Two thoughts sprouted up in JP's head almost instantly. First was the simple notion of getting to spend the afternoon as the focus of Zoe's attention, but second and more prominent, was the perfect way to get back at his friends.
"That's a great idea, Z!" JP cheered. "I'm ready when you are!"
"Okay, andiamo ragazzi!" Zoe waved at the rest of the group to follow.
JP got a lot of joy out of the stunned look on Koichi's face, as well as the simultaneous groans that came from Takuya, Koji, and Tommy. They knew full well what they were being dragged into, and how Zoe would make sure they stayed involved one way or another. JP felt it was an appropriate punishment for insulting his lucky jumpsuit.
