Alexia Walkin Black (ca. 1810s - Unknown)
"You're making things difficult."
Alexia, sitting in front of her vanity, frowned at the reflection of her brother in the mirror. He was standing in her doorway, his tall frame dwarfing the small space. He stood, glaring at her, with his arms stiffly crossed over his chest.
"Brother," she said in greeting. "I thought you'd be wooing your new wife."
"I was." He stepped into the room. "Then I received a letter from Mr Crabbe, saying that you had rejected his proposal. I came as soon as I could to talk some sense into you."
"Then I'm afraid your trip has been in vain." She placed her hair brush down, spinning around in her stool to face him. "I will not marry him. He's an odious fool. I could have more interesting conversation with—"
"Alexia."
"Licorus."
"The Crabbes will be useful friends," Licorus said, unable to hide the frustration in his voice. "And Mr Crabbe was very much looking forward to his marriage to you. Intellect aside, he would be good to be you. Provide for you. This is a good match, Alexia."
Alexia shrugged, combing through her thick dark hair with her fingers. "My mind is unchanged."
"Is this what you want for yourself, then? No husband? No children? No household to care for?"
"All preferable to marriage to Mr Crabbe."
This only incensed Licorus further. He stormed across the room, wrapping his fingers around his sister's wrist and pulling her to her feet. He stood over her, his eyes piercing into hers.
"Mr Crabbe will marry a Black. You are not the only choice. I'm sure he will be just as pleased with the prospect of Phoebe or Hester. And I imagine neither of them will cause me as much trouble as you."
For the first time that day, Alexia looked shaken. She pulled her wrist free of her brother's grip and glared up at him.
"Then you do not know Phoebe and Hester as well as you think."
"I'm trying to take care of this family," exclaimed Licorus. "To build a legacy. Why won't you help? Do your duty to this family?"
"I will. But I will not marry Mr Crabbe."
Licorus deflated. "You truly will not be convinced."
"I will not."
He frowned. "Then I suppose there is nothing more to say."
"There is not."
