Chapter 5
-Tokyo, Japan-
-7:43 pm -
The helicopter hovered right above the building. The ECS making sure no one would notice it, thinking the sound coming from a helicopter above they just couldn't find. Suddenly two figures leapt from the helicopter. Sousuke gave a signal, and the helicopter took off leaving nothing but the hum of it's' blades as it left hearing length.
"Shall we go?" Sousuke picked up his and Kaname's baggage as they walked towards the roof entrance of the building. Kaname smiled and nodded. Luckily he made sure Kaname's apartment would be paid for while they were gone. He literally had enough accumulated money, as well as some from well placed investments that he would be covered for life. Luckily he had plenty of well placed investment that also helped him with other things rather then just finance. Hopefully his apartment would still be open. He had removed everything not wanting to leak information, or have weapons stolen while he was gone. If the landlord recognized him maybe moving in would be easy. Maybe he could spend the night there today.
"You know you didn't have to pay for my apartment." Kaname had kept nagging him about that. She felt guilty, like she had a debt to him.
"Chi…Uhh…Kaname…" Kaname had made sure to have him call her by her given name. After the other night her surname wouldn't do.
"As I stated before it is not a problem." They were still a few blocks from her apartment, they had landed on the highest accessible building so as to avoid problem with the helicopter, and closed spaces. Kaname had her arm slung around one of Sousuke's and had her head leaning on his shoulder, he had decided to carry both of the bags. Though not much was in either of them since they really had nothing while they were gone. Well except Sousuke's weapon filled one.
"Well did you keep your apartment?" Kaname gave him a suspicious look, already guessing he hadn't. He began to sweat profusely. He dare not look at her.
"Uhh." He was hoping she wouldn't ask. Even if he couldn't get it back he could always stay at a hotel until he found another apartment close to hers.
"Sousuke…" She was purring trying to pry the obvious answer from him.
Sousuke was of course not used to walking like this with Kaname, her purring, or kissing her more than that first time. He had held her hand months before; sadly Leonard had ruined the moment.
"I did not expect to be returning so I did not attempt to keep it." Sousuke realized his mistake a minute too late. Kaname would jump at that.
"Why didn't you expect to come back? Did you expect you'd die? Or did you have other plans?" Kaname's voice had a hint of sadness in it as well as curiosity. She still wanted to know why he had said some of the things he said the other night. Sousuke made another mistake. He looked at Kaname. Her big brown eyes had an innocent look, but one saying she wanted an answer. She looked cute, a face you couldn't resist. That type of thinking was new to him. Cute. He sighed, and looked forward again his face neutral.
"I simply did not think my return necessary." He stated matter-of-factly.
"Hmmphf." Kaname was unsatisfied but let it go. They were coming up to the apartment building. It was Saturday so she wanted to relax. They had a whole day to rest before facing school. She had to resist calling Kyouko and the others to find out how they were doing. Suddenly she realized Sousuke's predicament. A sly smile crept upon her face.
"So where will you be staying tonight?" Kaname was an innocent girl at heart. But playing with Sousuke was too good to resist. She received her expected reaction. He broke out into a sweat.
"I was planning on going by the buildings and renting it out immediately. I could stay there the night. If not I could find a hotel nearby. If it is in use I will find a new apartment tomorrow." Sousuke was worried how Kaname may respond to his answer. He didn't mention his other alternative.
"You'll be staying at my apartment. Tonight at least. Seeing as you paid the rent for the whole time I was gone you deserve it. Plus I'm sure you're hungry." Kaname smiled, she knew Sousuke couldn't object. If he for some reason did she could tell him she was afraid. She planned on letting him sleep on the couch so it wouldn't be a big deal.
Sousuke was sweating but he smiled. He would feel better knowing where Kaname was anyway. They had reached the entrance to the building now. Kaname had a short conversation with her landlord before they went up the elevator. They had reached Kaname's door without another word. Kaname pulled out her key and opened the door. She stepped in. It was good to be home. At least it was. Sousuke pulled Kaname out of the apartment.
"Stay here. It seems as though someone has been here." Before Sousuke could take another step in Kaname had hit him over the head with her harisen.
"You told me someone was taking care of it, remember?"
Sousuke's face became surprised. He had forgotten that. After putting away his Glock26 he let Kaname in. He followed her quickly, locked the door, and put down the bags.
"You hungry?' Kaname called back as she entered the kitchen.
Sousuke's stomach rumbled at that moment. "Uhh…"
"Well you can order out. We need to go shopping tomorrow." Kaname's kitchen was completely clear of any food.
"I wonder who's been taking care of this place. I hope they weren't nosy." Kaname finished walking around her apartment. It was exactly as she had left it.
Kaname walked towards her door. Sousuke noticed.
"Where are you going?" He was of course still Sousuke. So he worried if she left his security. Kaname was going to be annoyed though if he asked her that every time she went somewhere.
"I'm going to tell the landlord not to let anyone in my apartment anymore. Also to get my other key from them. I swear if it was Ono-D…" Kaname's voice disappeared as she closed the door. Suddenly Sousuke's phone rang.
Kaname had just entered the elevator. Thoughts of Ono-d, or Shinji going through her clothes. Or maybe one of the girls looking into her personal stuff. She was really worried someone came across something they shouldn't have. She still had her mother's diary from her grandfather. Finally she reached the first floor.
The landlord was behind the desk.
"Excuse me Ms. Higurashi." (Just used a name that popped into my head.)
"Who has been coming to my apartment?" Kaname had reached the desk now.
The woman looked at her and smiled. She had short black hair. Her face had a few wrinkles. She looked to be in her early 40's.
"It was at first a boy. He had a strange little devil spike hairstyle."
Kaname thought of Ono-d instantly. "But then a girl with pig-tails took over. The one who comes over to visit occasionally." Kaname was relieved. Kyouko would never do anything she knew Kaname wouldn't like. Well if it was something serious.
"Thank you. Please tell her there is no need to take care of my place anymore. If she asks why make something up. Don't tell her I'm here. If she looks sad, I'm sorry."
And with that Kaname returned to her apartment. When she opened the door she had seen Sousuke putting away his cell-phone.
"Who was that?" Kaname asked as she locked the door behind her. Sousuke turned away from her, and began pulling out some things for security measures.
"It was no one." Sousuke pulled out some grenades. Kaname immediately noticed.
"Sousuke you better not be doing what I think you're doing." Kaname began tapping her foot.
"I'm merely-"Sousuke was cut off by Kaname's arms wrapping around him.
"Please Sousuke not tonight." Sousuke shuddered as he felt her breath on his ear.
"Uhh. Affirmative." Sousuke quickly put the grenades back. Kaname pulled him by his shoulders forcing him onto his back on the floor. He stared at her with a surprised look on his face.
"So who was on the phone?" Kaname's voice was a tinge angry. Sousuke looked around. He figured there was no way out of this. He sighed his surrender.
"I was someone I met on my mission to rescue you." Sousuke crossed his arms as he stared at Kaname. Her head was upside down to his. Kaname's stare became harder.
"Who?" Kaname's voice was demanding this time. Sousuke just stared back. His eyes were full of determination to keep his secret.
"That is classified in-"Kaname placed a finger on his mouth signaling him to be silent.
"So you can't tell me or won't?" Kaname had those pleading eyes again. Sousuke did not want to upset her. She said she had trusted him most. He trusted her more than anyone. She had saved his life a few times. Though he saved her much more; a few was better than none.
"I trust you more than anyone Kaname. That trust saved me multiple times. But this is different." Sousuke's eyes became soft, and sad. He hated disappointing her but that seemed to be his most frequent trait. Kaname still had that look in her eyes. He closed his eyes, and crossed his arms further if that was possible.
"It was Travis. I can't tell you more right now." Sousuke opened his eyes again only to be greeted with Kaname's face being only inches from his. He began blushing.
"Uhh." He could deal with trouble, and death threats in an instant, but he froze up when it came to Kaname.
She smiled. Sousuke suddenly smiled. He did something that made her happy. He thought that felt good.
"Thank you…" Kaname said before she kissed his forehead and stood up. She began to walk to her bedroom. She stopped just before her door; she turned her head to look at a frozen Sousuke. She thought it was cute the way he reacted like that.
"Listen, I'm gonna shower. You order some food." Sousuke quickly stood up finally free of his trance.
"Kaname it would be better to go out, and get the food to keep our location unknown." Kaname sighed.
"Fine Sousuke, just be back before I'm done." With that she closed the door. She was going to take an extra long shower. She hadn't had one since they rescued her. Plus it would give Sousuke enough time to get the food and be back.
She planned on enjoying her first shower while being back.
-1 hour later-
Sousuke had become worried. He had returned with the food in 20 minutes. He'd have gone faster but the food had to be prepared. It was now 1 hour since Kaname had started her shower. 3 times he asked her if she was alright. Three times she told him she was ok. He decided to serve the food on two plates, and place them in the microwave. He had gotten rice, chicken, fish, and some noodles. He wouldn't tell Kaname it was pre-made. Though he had no particulars to food, Kaname was a bit more picky.
Sousuke jumped when Kaname exited the bathroom. He hadn't noticed her turn the water off.
"Hold on I need to put on some clothes." With that she entered her room. Sousuke took a few glances at her as she exited the bathroom, and entered her room. He would make sure not to do that much. He'd try even harder to keep her from catching him.
Kaname returned in her blue stripe pajamas. Sousuke had already re-warmed the food. They ate in silence. When they finished Kaname insisted she wash the dishes. He had gotten, and served the food. Now he needed a shower.
"But Kaname." Sousuke was reluctant to use her shower. Kaname just stood before him; she glared at him while pointing a finger in the direction of the bathroom.
"If you don't shower you don't stay." Kaname was going to threaten him with sleeping on the floor but she knew that wouldn't work.
"I can find a vantage point, and watch your apartment." Sousuke sounded a bit reluctant with his suggestion as well.
Kaname was shocked. She couldn't believe he would rather leave than take a shower. It was so childish. He wouldn't take one because it was her shower. Kaname face began to fall but her cheek was met with Sousuke's lips. She jumped in surprise at his unexpected action. Before she could question him further he was in the bathroom and the water was running.
Sousuke was blushing hard in the shower. He was using Kaname's shower but that was only part of the reason. He realized what he said might have hurt Kaname's feelings. It took all of his courage to kiss her at random like that, and walk away agreeing to her terms. He quickly finished drying off than dressing. He decided to bring his clothes into the bathroom with him. He put on a T-shirt, boxers and a pair of sweat pants. When he exited he was surprised to find Kaname lying on the couch asleep. The television was on so she must have been watching or looking for something to watch. She must have been tired considering his shower only took about ten minutes. Sousuke looked at the time. It was only 9:00 'o clock but she was asleep. She must be exhausted after everything that happened he thought. His first idea was to cover her, and sleep on the floor. Instead he picked her up carefully. The smell of her shampoo made it to his nose. She smelled nice he thought. He had used showering supplies he brought from the Tuatha de Danaan. She looked peaceful there in his arms. He quickly but carefully took her to her room, placed her on her bed, and covered her. He had no doubt she would be sleeping in tomorrow. She would scold him for letting her sleep but he could live with it. He stepped out to the living room to turn off the TV. He walked back into Kaname's room. He quietly grabbed a quilt from the closet. He suddenly heard Kaname stirring behind him.
"Sousuke…come to bed…" Kaname was still half-asleep. He jumped in surprise. He realized she was probably half-asleep. He could probably go to the living room, and she wouldn't notice.
He began to exit the room when he heard Kaname again. She was still lying down.
"Where are you going? I said come to bed." Her voice was a bit groggy but he knew she was aware of what she was saying. If it wasn't dark he could see that her face was a perfect red.
"But Kaname.' Sousuke was so surprised he didn't even sweat. Kaname sat up. She was getting annoyed.
"Don't but Kaname me, get your butt in bed you can sleep on this end I'll sleep here so you don't have to worry." Kaname had said he would sleep like that only because she knew it was the only way to get him to sleep there. She didn't want to tell him about her worries of being back, and not wanting to be alone her first night back. Even if he was in the same apartment.
"Roger." Sousuke walked over, and slid under his quilt making sure to be as far to his end of the bed as possible.
"Relax" Kaname had noticed his unease. Sousuke did as he was told, and lied a little more on the bed. He was amazed at how quickly he relaxed at her command. Had it been anyone else, especially Tessa he would be completely worried, and on guard. Suddenly Kaname was snuggled up against him. His face turned red, and he gasped in surprise.
"Kaname you said-." His efforts were futile. She was asleep. He hesitated but he put one arm around her and kept the other at his side. Normally he would be uncomfortable. Despite Kaname's wishes he set up security measures. He could tell she was still worried he could hear it in her voice. He figured that was the reason for her sudden request. Normally he'd say no but this was Kaname. Soon sleep took over him as well.
---
-Next morning-
Sousuke roused from his sleep. That had been the longest most peaceful sleep he'd had in months or ever actually. His thoughts were confirmed when he looked at the time. It was 8:24 am. Considerably longer than he'd normally sleep. Suddenly he felt something move on his shoulder. Kaname's head was nuzzled softly upon it. He smiled as he watched her sleep. He was starting to worry. As unnoticeable as his smile was, Kaname made him smile much more than he thought necessary. He smiled nonetheless. He brought his right hand up to brush her hair. His left arm around her waist.
"Mmm…" Kaname had begun waking as well. He watched her as she stretched. Admiring her figure as it stretched across him he looked away when he realized what he was doing. She used one hand to cover her mouth, the other to rub the sleep from her eyes.
'She's beautiful even as she wakes up.' He thought.
"Hi…" Kaname's voice was soft as she smiled at him. His heart skipped a beat. That smile and sweet voice in the morning would make any man's heart jump if he woke up to it. Luckily he was waking up to it.
"Good morning…" He continued to look at her as she nuzzled against his jaw.
"What time is it?" Her voice came out in low whispers. She really wasn't a morning person.
"Almost 8:30." He continued to rub the back of her neck.
"Go back to sleep we'll get up in an hour or two." With that Kaname was asleep. Her warm breath sweeping over Sousuke's neck. He did as he was told.
"Kana-chan time to get up! C'mon you're going to be late." Kaname's hand slammed down on the bird alarm. As good as it was to hear it again she damned Sousuke for setting it. It was 10:00 am. Where was Sousuke? Suddenly Kaname heard her front door close. She sheepishly stood up and slowly walked out to her living room.
"What are you doing?" Kaname noticed him putting away groceries.
"I took the liberty of shopping early. I bought what from my memory you used to have as the most frequent of necessary items, and some other essentials." Sousuke had somehow put away most of the groceries already. Kaname simply disregarded it, and went to take her morning shower.
When she had gotten out she smelled something good. She had noticed Sousuke made bacon, and eggs.
"When did you learn to cook?" She knew he really hadn't cooked anything but it was better than earlier attempts he had made.
Sousuke looked towards Kaname. She was wearing a blue blouse with a small matching vest. A darker skirt reaching about half-way down her thighs and white socks reaching past her knees.
"Uhh…It's a basic American breakfast. Simple quick, and efficient." Kaname noticed the glasses of orange juice on the table. She smiled at his kind gesture.
"Thank you." She said before she sat down, and began eating. She noticed Sousuke was not.
"Aren't you going to eat?" Sousuke simply drank his juice.
"I already did." Kaname nodded before she went back to her food. When she finished she washed her dishes, her face, and then brushed her teeth.
"We have a lot to do today, let's go." With that Sousuke and Kaname were out the door.
----
-A park in the eastern end of Tokyo-
They were both slumped on a bench. It had indeed been a troublesome day. They had re-attained Sousuke's apartment, much too both their displeasures. They had gotten some of Sousuke's hidden supplies. They had run from officer Wakana after Sousuke stopped her from accidentally running over a child. She had blamed them for causing her to crash. Luckily she didn't see there faces, or notice who they were. Finally they had done some shopping for clothes for both of them.
Sousuke looked at his watch it was 6:00 pm. running from Wakana took a long time. Also he still saw no reasons in purchasing the clothes but he knew girls liked to shop so he did not deny Kaname her wish. Now they would each go home. He was beginning to regret having to go to his apartment tonight.
He began to stand up to leave when he heard a sound. It sounded like yelling. Sousuke told Kaname to wait for him as he went to investigate. He ended up deep in an alley across the street. Kaname was worried as she watched him go in.
Sousuke had his Glock26 ready with rubber bullets. He turned another corner to find a woman on the floor her shirt ripped slightly exposing her breast. He noticed two men standing over her. Suddenly they noticed him.
"Hey who da hell are you?" The thug with messy yellow and pink hair pulled out a knife. The one with the orange Mohawk pulled out his own.
"This guys looks like he wants his ass whooped." Sousuke quickly pulled up his gun. With perfect aim he placed a bullet in each thugs head, and groin. The woman had run away. Sousuke shrugged thinking she would be okay. Suddenly Sousuke heard chuckling. He looked up and there was Wakana with her cynical face on the edge of the roof. She suddenly leaped in front of him.
"It's been awhile." Sousuke realized she recognized him. Wakana's psychotic smile reached across her whole face.
Kaname jumped when she heard an explosion. Suddenly Sousuke was running out of the alley.
"She is knocked out for only a short amount of time. We must go quickly before authorities arrive! It would be bad to be in trouble so soon after returning!" Sousuke grabbed up the bags, and dragged Kaname along as he ran. Behind them both s laugh of pure sadistic joy could be heard.
---
-Kaname's apartment-
8:00 pm
Kaname was slumped on her couch. She had wanted to relax today but Sousuke felt he needed to get things done. So she did too. It didn't help that Wakana had hassled them twice. They had just finished eating dinner which Kaname had made. A new episode of Komoudoshi-sama (Japanese spider-man) was on but she was not completely in to it. She was too tired.
Sousuke finally stood up.
"I should go. I'll come by before school tomorrow." Sousuke grabbed his bags. Kaname decided it was good he was leaving. She could take a bath, and go to bed early. Heaven knows she needed the energy for tomorrow.
As Sousuke began to go out the door Kaname turned him around. Much to his surprise she pulled him into a passionate kiss. They hadn't kissed like this since the other night. Sousuke dropped his bags, and put his hands around her waist. She put her arms around his neck. She sadly ended it, and told him he should try to get to sleep early. With that Sousuke walked back to his apartment.
'I don't think I'll ever get used to that.' Sousuke thought as he walked towards the elevator.
Tomorrow would truly be a trial.
