Chapter 22
She shifted on the floor slightly. She was starting to rethink her coming on this trip. Emmanuel was right there but she guessed he wasn't important enough for them to use as a threat. The last thing she wanted was for anyone to die on her account. That bullet though completely missing her came very close. Emmanuel had reacted to it more then she did by shrieking when the bullet passed through the door frame. She wished she could raise her head to look out the window but she didn't want to get shot just for being curious. She could hear the conversation the Capo was having with Sousuke and the others but it did not sound good for them at all. The gun fight a moment ago made it sound like they had almost a small army out there. She really wanted to help she didn't want to seem useless like before on the cliff but this was a different scenario. She decided she could settle on listening for now.
"Well what do you want to do?" Capo's voice could be heard behind the large containers once more. He sounded smug. Shoving their gun barrels down his throat sounded pretty good right now. But they had to be careful they had a technical hostage situation now. They would need to consider all the best options on getting out of this. They usually went for a direct approach. In Khanka Kaname was the one who got them out of committing suicide to get her out. Now he would need to think about a little more then self sacrifice plans though taking them out in a huge explosion after pretending to surrender sounded good. The three stayed hidden in silence. This was not looking good for them at all.
"Give me an answer or we'll take a warning shot into the girl. Maybe her leg or shoulder, or we could go for a kill then see how much you value your own lives." He sounded angry now. They could tell he was getting impatient, and it didn't take that long. By the looks of things local authorities wouldn't be heading this way either. They listened to everything around them not many plans were coming to mind. If only they could move the car out of the way.
Melissa pulled her phone out of her pocket. "Hold on Capo, give us a minute."
Melissa listened for him he briefly agreed before having his men prepare their weapons just in case. Melissa pressed the button on her phone to activate short distance speaking.
"Kaname can you hear me?" They heard a small amount of rustling from the car before the phone signaled a response.
"Yeah I can. What's up?"
"The car is still on. Try to reach the pedal to move it without moving yourself too much."
"Ok."
Kaname turned a bit to see if she could get around to reaching it but no ones arms would be able to reach it from where she was. She was not pleased that despite the size of the car the pedal was still too far. She tried motioning so she had her head towards the driver end without moving too much. She was successful. She pressed the button to move the chair adjustment forward then turned back to her original position. She could touch the pedal now if she strained but that was not enough. Suddenly she remembered that cars move slowly at least if taken off park. So she pulled the lever that was next to the main seats.
"I couldn't get the pedal but I took it off the brake."
"Great but see if you can move it a little faster that sniper might get you before you move far enough out of the way, look for something to use to push it." Melissa looked back to Kurz and…
"Where's Sousuke?"
"Got it."
5 seconds later the car accelerated for about 3 seconds second before it was fully out of the way. They listened as the car was switched to park. They guessed what ever she used reached the brake pedal as well.
"Your safe but be careful anyway. Stay in the driver's seat."
"What was that? She's out of range."
Capo's sniper had just reported her movement. Conveniently he had been drinking from a thermos while she moved not waiting to be on snipe until he was ordered.
"I see. So you take my courtesy and play me for a fool. Prepare to die."
Just as he ordered his men to fire one of his men's cars drove right through them hitting six men, killing 4. Capo himself had hurt his leg jumping away.
"Bastard kill them!"
The car was luckily protected. The tires weren't but he doubted any of the men would be smart enough for that.
When he was parked out of the way he opened the door. "We should go. But it is safer if we go separate ways. You take this vehicle, take Emmanuel, and Chidori and go to your safe point, it is protected so it is more proficient for escape. I will take the other vehicle and drive away first getting as many of them to follow me as possible. Do not worry I am not attempting suicide I will see you later."
"Fine but you better not die." Melissa agreed then turned to the remaining weapons.
"See you later then." Kurz turned then helped her load them into the vehicle. Emmanuel stepped into the backseat of the protected vehicle. Sousuke grabbed a few weapons before going over to the Mercedes. Kaname was in the passenger seat.
"Chidori what are you doing here? You should be with the others."
"I want to come along with you. I know it's dangerous but I don't want you to be by yourself. Besides you wouldn't let anything happen to me right?"
"Affirmative but still."
"Then we're agreed let's go."
Kurz and Melissa walked up to the vehicle. "Ok we'll see you both later then." Melissa blew them a kiss before heading to the driver's side of the mob vehicle.
"Don't do anything you shouldn't unless you plan on telling me about it. But also do things you should and tell me. I'm sure Sousuke's cold down there." Kurz still smiled when the small pack of cigarettes hit his face.
"Ok see ya' and thanks sis might like these." They watched as Kurz headed into the vehicle. Sousuke pressed a button on his phone. "We are going."
"Ready when you are!"
The wheels screeched as the car took off. The remainder of the small mob collection quickly ran back to their cars. Capo was already sitting furiously in his car. His sniper would be dealt with later.
"Follow them I wish to see them dead. I'd like to do it personally if possible."
They were speeding out of the facility now. He thought they must be stupid to have not set up a parameter or blockade out of the facility before they got there. Just as they hoped most if not all of the mobsters remaining were after them. Despite the gunshots coming their way he knew they must be nearly out of ammo. After that all he would need to worry about is getting out of there rather then dodging accurate and stray bullets that may injure or kill them.
Sousuke glanced at Kaname. She was buckled but she looked calm. She was always good a responding to bad situations but now she reacted to them quite easily. She was probably worried but she was not showing many signs. She had placed her life in his hands by staying in this vehicle. Part of him preferred that she be in the safer vehicle with more people to protect her. Part of him felt better that she stayed with him. Other parts focused on protecting her at all costs.
Sousuke returned his eyes to the road. The enemy had officially stopped shooting now which meant they were out of weapons useful in vehicles. In fact if they were out of ammo all together defeating them would be easy.
"We're out of here we'll see you two later. Have fun." Kurz called in right before the connection was too far to speak anymore.
"That's good." Kaname looked over at Sousuke while they drove. All that was behind was engines and angry screaming. She was relieved the gunfire had at least stopped. Except for the sharp turns, and the dodging of other vehicles and pedestrians the drive wasn't all that bad. She turned on the radio. Who ever drove this was listening to an American station because the lyrics were English. She decided the song wasn't bad and seemed to somewhat suit the situation so she left it on. She turned to see Sousuke's shocked expression.
"What?" She shrugged her shoulders when he just turned back to the road.
"How do you plan on getting out of this Sousuke we do have limited fuel."
He instantly looked at the gas meter. They still had half a tank.
"Hold on."
He once again stepped down hard on the pedal and held it. Kaname gripped an arm rest as they accelerated.
"One of the near-by bridges should be lifting soon. We'll make our escape then."
"You don't mean we're going to jump it."
"We jumped a building today, I do not see why that would be a problem."
"..."
Kaname crossed her arms and huffed. "Fine but you owe me."
"Understood."
They continued their pace the mob cars not far behind. In front of them was a police motorcycle and long crossing of cars.
"Be careful." Kaname gripped the arm rest a little tighter.
Sousuke continued driving hoping the cars would finish passing by before they reached them. Suddenly he realized something.
"That's a funeral line." Sousuke slew down a bit. One of the mob cars had accelerated up to them.
"Chidori reach into the back, and grab that material I placed there. Wrap it around yourself." She reached back and pulled the material. It was heavier then she thought it would be.
"Sousuke what is this?"
"Crash sheet."
"Crash sheet?"
Just as Kaname finished pulling the sheet over the opposing vehicle bumped into her side of the car.
"Hey!"
"Chidori cover yourself now. I'm not sure I will be able to avoid this with these cars here."
Another car came up and starting crashing into Sousuke's end, and another came on the back. He clicked his tongue. This was the first intelligent thing his opponents had done all day. With all the car crashes the last two chases of today has caused he had no doubt there would be a lot of funerals soon. He knew some pedestrians must have been hit as well. He would try to keep the information away from Kaname.
She placed the sheet around herself. "What about you?"
"It's not a problem." The mobsters shot out two of their tires then drove away one slammed back into them. He finished pulling the sheet onto Kaname as the car span then flipped. He held onto Kaname as they tumbled. Though none of them saw it. The officer had not been able to move in time, and was badly injured. Three funeral vehicles had crashed. The Mercedes was in horrible condition but roughly okay. It was fast and had a somewhat good defense. He guessed the car had to have some kind of tune up somewhere.
"Get out. Check the vehicle, make sure they're dead." Capo's men stepped out of the vehicle and cautiously approached the crash site. People were crawling out of overturned cars, and some who were just slammed.
Kaname and Sousuke sat upside down in the car. Sousuke unbuckled his seat belt and lowered himself onto the roof of the overturned car.
"Chidori are you okay?"
"Uh-huh."
He gripped her through the sheet, and unbuckled her. He slowly lowered her to a crouching position. He removed the sheet when he had her down.
"Oh my god! Sousuke."
She saw the blood dripping down his face. He had been cut by the shattered glass. His arm was also bleeding.
"I am fine. I am actually fortunate these wounds are minor compared to most crashes. But we must go."
He pulled the handle on his door. Luckily it was loose, and opened easily, then fell off.
"Come out this way." Sousuke took her hand to help her out. He kept her crouched as he watched the mobsters check the vehicles. The pile up had become pretty big on the way over. Luckily since their vehicle was perpendicular to most of the cars it slid out of the way, and their escape route was not obstructed by the vehicles.
"Follow me." He took Kaname's hand and led her through the traffic. Luckily a lot of cars had become blocked causing a large jam.
"There they go." A mobster who had made it across the debris had spotted them. The rest easily found the two after that.
"Run!" They took off like lightning. Bullets were actually being fired at them again. They ran into an alley the enemies not far behind. Sousuke grimaced when it turned out to be a dead end.
"Damn. Chidori hide." The footsteps of the mobsters were getting closer.
Kaname ducked behind a strange collection of crates. Sousuke pulled out his gun as the opponents turned the final corner to them.
"Well well trapped like a rat." He spoke in French but luckily Sousuke was fluent in many languages.
"Where's the girl?"
Sousuke responded in Japanese so they would not understand him.
"What the…? Call the boss tell him we have him."
The other mobster called in on a small walkie-talkie. More mobsters joined the small group. Sousuke kept one hand pocketed as the group continued to grow.
"Chidori I will get them out of here. When I do run. Call Kurz and Melissa to get you out of here. I apologize for my mistakes."
He glanced over at Kaname. She looked at him with worry in her eyes. They were scared again. She was scared. Worried he might get hurt.
"I don't want to go…We should escape together." She said it low enough for him to hear only. "Negative this time that is impossible. I am trying to find a way to escape together but the only solution seems to be running."
"Let's both go then."
"If I make another mistake like this it could be our last."
"Did you think that maybe they might not all leave. Did you think that maybe one might be smart enough to remember you weren't alone?"
Sousuke looked back at the mob not answering her question. Capo had walked up.
"Hello. Where are your friends?"
"Not here. I left by myself." They both spoke in English.
"Heh... How brave. Do you think you will escape? If I cannot have you all I will do what I can with you?" One of the mobsters then whispered into his ear.
"Hmm…is that so? Well sir it appears though not all your comrades are here you seem to have brought one along. The girl no less. Where is she?"
"I came alone. Your guard is mistaken."
"I don't think so. Did you have her go another way or is she with you? Should I check?"
Suddenly the reality of what Kaname said hit him full on. Some enemies were intelligent and if he left they might find her. They could use her as a hostage, and do things to her.
Sousuke clutched his chest when an immeasurable amount of pain shot through him.
One of the mobsters reacted and shot him. Sousuke stumbled backwards towards the wall then slowly slid down it leaving a thin blood trail. Kaname watched in horror. She wished she could do more. Sousuke didn't move as the crimson liquid leaked from his shoulder. Capo took a gun from one of his men and began walking over.
"Oh well sir. I will enjoy taking care of you personally. First I would like to teach you a lesson."
Sousuke watched him as he approached. The pain in his body negating his motor skills. His body picked the worst possible time to react.
Kaname felt around her. She tried not to make noise. She felt a little better when she found a metal rod. It was small enough for her to get her hand around it. Short enough to carry easily. She slowly stood and leaned against the crates as she held up the weapon. She listened as the footsteps of the man approached Sousuke.
"Well well. Should I shoot you now? You were not the one originally at fault but maybe you need a little punishment."
He was almost there she could hear him, feel it like a lioness waiting to pounce on prey.
The footsteps stopped. She held her breath when she heard another gunshot. She began to tear thinking of what it could mean. She looked over at Sousuke. The bullet had only grazed his arm.
'Why doesn't he move he's been through worse?' She still stood waiting for her chance.
"Why don't you make a noise? Give me some fun." He took a few more steps she saw her chance.
"Fine." Capo began to pull on the small trigger.
"Hey!" Capo turned to the side. Kaname's pipe smashed right into his face. Blood poured from his nose as he felt back. She was sure his nose was broken. He bumped against the wall, and fell down. He was only unconscious but there was still a small militia of mobsters in front of them.
"Damn…" One of the soldiers whistled.
"What are you doing? Fire!"
Kaname pulled on Sousuke trying to move him. The first shot went off. Sousuke moved instantly. He grabbed Kaname and pulled her behind the crates.
"Chidori that was not wise I told you to…"
"And let him kill you? You act like you have everything under control then something happens and you're shot. Now we're both being eek!"
Kaname ducked when a piece of crate flew by. The crates had to be empty or full of something worthless because they were starting to fall apart. A bullet could pierce it and strike them.
"I'm sorry Kaname."
"You did nothing wrong Sousuke…"
They sat there as the bullets continued to tear the crates apart.
"I wanted to see my father and sister at least one more time. Heh, what was I thinking coming along. Maybe I could help…right. If anything I should be sorry."
Kaname pulled her legs close to her. Sousuke watched her. She looked really upset.
"Great…Japanese girl killed in the back of an alley. Body found mutilated… I really know how to pick 'em. Strangest guy on the planet." Kaname lightly smiled.
Sousuke felt horrible. They were sitting there waiting to die and all he could do was just sit there. He felt worse with what she was saying. Sousuke reached over to Kaname. He griped her hand. Kaname turned to look at him. Tears were in her eyes. He intertwined their fingers as they sat. Kaname scooted closer to Sousuke so that she could rest on his shoulder. The bullets still rained around them.
"Sousuke I'd like to tell you something…"
"Yes." He rested his head on hers.
"I tell you I trust you, that I can do anything when I'm with you…but there's something else. Something I really want to say."
"Hm."
"Well I wanted to say…" She stopped when a bullet flew right by her. She turned to see Capo had woken up.
"You bitch! Now I'm going to torture and kill him in front of you. Then I will take you with me, and make you my whore, my deviant little sex slave."
They heard whistles as the mob listened.
Kaname gripped Sousuke tighter. The thought of that sickened her. She would rather die.
Sousuke listened to what Kaname just said. He could say the same things to her. If she believed in him so much he should be able to do something. So he focused on Capo's threat.
"Kaname close your eyes."
"Huh?"
"Please."
She said nothing more as she closed her eyes. Capo continued to approach.
"It's over…" He raised his gun.
Sousuke pulled out two grenades and sent them towards the group of mobsters. A lot of screaming could be heard as they exploded. Sousuke kicked Capo's gun upward making him miss his target. He grabbed Capo's head then twisted it breaking his neck. He threw more grenades at the group, and opened fire.
Kaname flinched when she heard the sound of Capo's neck breaking but she dare not open her eyes to identify it. She listened to the sound of explosions, and gunfire.
Uncertainty and fear took place as she sat there. Eventually the sound stopped. She was instantly relieved when a pair of arms wrapped around her. His body covering hers.
"It's okay now but do not open your eyes. I will carry you out of here. We will go somewhere safe." Kaname said nothing as he lifted her. She could not see anything. She just felt his warmth holding her. She blocked out the sounds of destruction and death around her. She nuzzled as close to him as she possibly could in that position hanging on to his shirt.
Tears streamed down her face as he held her. "I was so scared."
"It's okay that is a natural reaction when one believes they are about to die."
"I was scared you were going to die moron. Of course I was worried I'd die but I was actually scared you wouldn't make it. When you grabbed your chest I thought you were sick again, and then they shot you. I almost…when I thought you had…just like when I saw it before…" She wasn't making much sense anymore.
Sousuke pulled her a little higher and held her close. He was worried about her through the whole situation. He was scared when she jumped out and they began shooting.
"It's okay now… I promise to protect you…oh yes you said you wanted to say something before." Sousuke looked down at her. She was sleeping. Not surprising after everything that had happened recently. She had acted well in the situation, despite her actions around Gauron. She had saved his life as well. He would need to find a good place to stay and get out of here as fast as possible. He was sure police didn't ignore that much destruction, and chaos. He was also sure the mob would certainly be after them, once hey got a new leader. He just hoped no one else would recognize them. He looked over at the massacre once more. In less then a day he added at least 50 kills to his total…with ease. His hands were further stained in blood. It did not matter to him though. He did not hold a religion or believe in sin. He had killed them all with his skills nothing more. He had put her right in the middle of it. He felt bad for nothing but that. The sight was truly gruesome though he stood there watching it as if it were an everyday thing. It was natural to him but he knew to others even the sleeping angel in his arms this was something horrible and unheard of. He walked away as a piece of building fell crushing some of the already dead mobsters.
She slowly opened her eyes. The room was dark. Pitch black. She guessed it had to be night. She felt around to see if there was a desk next to her with a lamp. There was. She touched it and it released only a dim light. She touched it one more time to make the light somewhat stronger. She looked around the room. It was spacious. The bed was comfortable. The room had a single dresser, a closet, and side tables on each end of the bed. She looked at the clock. The red numbers said it was a little past eight. She could hear a light drizzle of rain dancing on the windows. She wondered how she got there. Just then her memories of the day's events flooded her mind.
"Oh my god! Sousuke!"
In an instant the door slammed open. Sousuke stood there gun in hand.
"Chidori what happened?"
He was wearing nothing but a black beater and sweat pants. She saw the bandages wrapped around his shoulder, and arms. She jumped out of the bed to examine him.
"Are you ok?"
He glanced at his wounds. "Affirmative they are minor. I am healing quite well."
Kaname noticed his head wound had already sealed itself.
"What happened exactly?"
"Come to the living room I will explain there." Sousuke lead Kaname out into the large room.
"This place is big."
"It is a hotel suite. It is private, large, and has a good escape route."
"Of course." She rolled her eyes as she plopped onto the couch in the living room.
Sousuke entered the kitchen and returned with two glasses of water. He handed her one then sat next to her.
"After I defeated our enemies I escaped as quick as possible, and found us this hotel. We are about 5 miles from the scene. You were asleep while I carried you. To take away suspicion I procured a wheelchair and placed you in it. I already informed Kurz, and Melissa. They are safe. We should have a ride out of here in a day or two."
"A day or two! What about our class?"
"They are continuing the field trip perfectly. They will complete it before we return. I have decided to make your stay here as comfortable as possible. Your clothes have been washed and dried."
"Huh?" Kaname looked at herself. She was wearing only the personals and a gown.
"Did you…?" She looked at him but he looked away.
"Yes. I did not trust anyone else but with the situation, and your condition I needed to get you out of your clothing." Sousuke turned red when he realized how that sounded.
"I mean to check you physical being, and clean them."
He turned back to Kaname. He watched as she finished off her water.
"Thank you. So what now?"
Sousuke took a deep breath. "I would like to take you out. We are in Paris, and the field trip is ruined for you so I should try to make it up to you."
Kaname looked at him. His face turned red, and looked away again.
"Are you asking me out Sousuke?"
"Negative I only wish to compensate for the field trip."
"Are you sure? It sounded like you were asking me out on a date."
"Uh..."
"Well?"
He looked down at the carpet. "Affirmative I believe that is what it is called."
"Okay. Just let me shower. You said my clothes were dry right?"
"Affirmative. It is in the room folded on the dresser. But I will also need to shower as well."
"Okay but me first."
"Understood. But I will use the other restroom rather then wait." Kaname hadn't realized there would be multiple bathrooms. She ignored the thought then headed for the room.
She almost ran into the room. Sousuke looked at the closed door surprised. He wondered why she was in such a hurry. She had a bathroom attached to the room so he would not be able to ask her now. He grabbed his clothes. He had gone out and purchased other clothes while he was here. His other set was soaked in blood. He washed them but the shirt still had bullet holes.
Kaname was in a bit of a hurry to get in the shower. She had not been on many dates with decent guys. In fact Fuwa may have been the only one. She had already done things with him people would believe to be more intimate than a date but this was her first with Sousuke. Her first with someone she was really in a relationship in. And he was able to ask her instead of the expected coaxing him into it. She was willing to go through the hell of the day just for this event. She grabbed a towel then headed for the shower.
He examined his wound while in the shower. Though blood still leaked down when water struck the wound it was almost completely closed. He bet it would take maybe another hour. He did not understand but he felt a strange anxiousness inside him to be done in the shower. Today's events were horrible luckily he minimized trauma to Kaname, and kept her from getting hurt. He felt better he was more under control of some of the problems he had. He was almost completely okay except for the random shots of pain. He examined a few strange marks on his body. They had gotten worse then they were before. They were slightly darker or more pale marks in weird jagged forms. You wouldn't notice the marks unless you knew exactly what to look for.
One he finished he dried off then exited the bathroom to dress. He put on a pair of black boxers, black pants, and socks. He put on a black beater, a dark grey shirt, and black jacket. He purchased the set because it was recommended by the clerk. He also said it would work on a date. Though Sousuke had not mentioned anything to the man. He wondered if the man was psychic or had a way to get intelligence quickly. He had taken him to the back room and interrogated him to see if he knew his plans already. It turned out the clerk just gave a suggestion he would give when helping people. Sousuke apologized then purchased the clothes. He also decided he would wear his boots under them rather then purchasing any. He brushed his teeth, then equipped himself finishing his preparing. He was not the kind of person to put on cologne or spend forever brushing his hair or anything. Wearing scents might give away his position in a battle situation.
She quickly dried off then dressed, she grabbed a white material as well. She wanted to hurry but wanted to make sure she did everything right. She brushed her hair first. Then she remembered she had to brush her teeth so she went back to the bathroom. Sousuke had left sterilized brushes. When she finished she brushed her hair again. She put on a little make-up. She applied eye liner, a little powder, and lipstick, and the rest of her make-up. She placed it all back in the purse then exited the room. "Sousuke I'm ready."
She stopped when she saw him. She walked up to him and examined what he was wearing. "Nice."
"The clerk said it was proficient for this kind of situation."
"Oh." When she looked up Sousuke was staring at her.
"What?"
"Forgive me. I had not taken into account what you were wearing earlier. You look um…nice as well." He took a moment to examine her face. "Are you planning something? If so that make-up is not very good for camouflage."
Suddenly the harisen crashed into his head. "Kaname…where did you get that?" He had totally disregarded the pain and his usual complaint.
Kaname looked at the paper fan in her hand. "I don't know. It just appeared. It's convenient though."
"I do not think so…"
"You wouldn't." Kaname looked around the room. "Sousuke are you paying for this?"
"Affirmative."
"How much?"
"It's not a problem. I have a large sum of money stored. Also I have been acquiring large amounts as well."
"Whatever. Let's go." Kaname grabbed his arm and tugged him towards the door. "So what are we doing?" Sousuke turned and locked the door once they exited. It was at least half past eight.
"I am unaware of what to do. I believe we should do what you wish."
"Well first let's get dinner."
"Roger. Would you like to walk to should we drive?"
"Drive…"
"Yes. I rented a vehicle while you were asleep. Didn't I mention it?"
"No. We'll walk first if anything comes up that's really far we'll come get the car or order a taxi to take us back or to the place."
"Understood."
-Ze-
The restaurant named Ze was a rip-off of one of Paris's older restaurants called Zo. (Yes it exists.) It was aimed at younger crowds but not rowdy ones. It was a small restaurant with a total of only 20 tables. It was a slow night however. Kaname and Sousuke took a table that would provide safe cover as he suggested. Kaname would have argued but it was not really something worth arguing over.
A waitress brought them menus within ten seconds of seating them. Kaname opened hers. She could not think of anything to talk about with Sousuke. She was glad to be on the date but she didn't want it to be plain and horrible.
"What are you getting Sousuke?"
"I had a comrade who became ill after eating French food. They like to use animal organs and foods somewhat uncommon in other restaurants. While that is okay if one does not cook it properly the consumers may become ill."
"Well this place is small I doubt they have anything weird."
"…"
"I'll order for us both. How does breaded chicken, pasta, and garlic bread sound?"
"It's not a problem though you should let me check it before actually consuming the substance."
Kaname rolled her eyes and ignored his remark. "How about a drink?"
"Water is fine."
Kaname gave him a hard stare. He just sat there arms crossed, face it's usual expressionless self. "Water then." A waitress walked up, and Kaname ordered for them both.
"Jeez Sousuke you know this is a date you're suppose to be doing something."
His face went from blank to embarrassed in an instant. He had already completely forgotten that this wasn't just time being spent casually together. This was what they called for a reason unknown to him (or to anybody) a date. He attempted to remember as much of Kurz and Melissa's rant about dating before their leaving the Tuatha de Danaan.
"Something wrong?"
"Apparently…I seem to already be failing at providing a sufficient date."
Kaname smiled kindly. Sousuke's cheeks lightly flushed then he looked down.
"I…"
"It's just the start Sousuke it's no big deal. You're doing fine just stop being so paranoid."
"Understood."
She turned when she heard the bell signaling someone's entrance. She turned to see a couple with two children. One a child of about 4 to 5 years of age. The other an infant in the mother's arms.
"Aren't they cute Sousuke?"
She turned to the usually erstwhile sergeant across from her. He kept looking around taking into note every action of every person. Before she could ask him anything the waitress from before walked up. "Here are your glasses of water, and some complimentary bread." The young woman smiled at Sousuke and bent forward as she placed the bread and glasses of water down. Kaname noticed. Sousuke only noticed her increasing rage.
"Is something wrong Chidori? You look angry."
She faked a smile that looked ready to crack, and closed her eyes as she looked at him.
"No…nothing…is…wrong."
"Good."
He crossed his arms then continued his watch of the restaurant.
"Did you notice that waitress?"
Sousuke looked on guard now. "Yes why? She walked right in front of us and her ability to be silent on the way over failed as well. If you are worried she did not have a weapon concealed anywhere on her legs or in her shoes. She is not hiding anything in her shirt or between her breasts."
"What!" The people in the restaurant turned to them when she shouted.
"We are in a restaurant you must be more quiet. As for your question many females like to use their breast as a place of concealment for weapons usually blades of some kind. She bent forward exposing her area to hide a weapon and I did not see anything. There are no formations, or bumps on her clothes suggesting hidden weapons either. I believe she is harmless but if you wish I will confront, and search her."
Kaname stared at him slack jawed. She'd seen it in movies but it was hard listening talk about staring at another woman's chest to check for weapons. Even worse she was getting angry, he admitted to looking at another woman's chest.
"Did you enjoy the view?" She crushed a roll of bread in her hand as she asked.
"View Kaname? I do not understand. We are not in position to view any scenery. Would you like to move so that…"
"Never mind that, did you enjoy looking at her, mister?"
Sousuke thought about her question for ten seconds before he turned red.
Kaname was watching him with a hard glare and bread smashed in her hand. Truthfully he had not noticed the woman's features he was just being a good soldier. He did not know if Chidori would believe him or not.
"Negative. I did not notice the woman in the way you are speaking of at all."
She felt better because she knew he wasn't lying. He'd let her hit him with the harisen while telling the truth then lie. Finally she noticed the crushed bread in her hand.
"Oh. Want some bread Sousuke?" Se held out the crushed pastry. In truth she planned on wrapping it up, and throwing it away or something. She was surprised when Sousuke actually took a piece and ate it.
"The bread does not seem to be poisoned. It is not unpleasant. Would you like some?"
Kaname sat there open jawed again. Sousuke lifted another piece of bread then placed it in her mouth. He watched as she waited 5 seconds before chewing, and wallowing it. She blushed when she realized what just happened.
"Oh. You're right it isn't bad." Was all she could say. Sousuke looked at her confused then an idea hit him.
"Is there anything you would like to talk about Chidori?" She looked at him then shook her head trying to clear her mind.
"Yeah but first of all that makes…" Kaname counted in her head. "That's about ten more times you used my last name which means you have a record of at least seventeen faults. I'm going to enjoy getting revenge."
"Uh."
This time Kaname took a piece of bread and placed it in his mouth. He chewed and swallowed it just as the waitress walked up with their food. She looked angry. Kaname figured she saw her place the food in his mouth. She gave the waitress a mocking grin. She placed down Kaname's food then turned to place down Sousuke's. "Here you go sir." She bent forward again. Sousuke looked at Kaname as she did this. The waitress scowled then walked away. Kaname giggled a bit enjoying her triumph. They held small conversations as they ate. They spoke about music though Sousuke did not have much to say. They spoke about issues about their life, and things dealing with the world. They decided to skip the garlic bread. When they finished dinner Sousuke paid the bill. Kaname wrapped her arms around his and let the white material hang on her arms. She caught one last scowl from the waitress as they left. She stuck her tongue out in return.
"So what next?" Kaname looked around at all the buildings and signs as they passed.
"Would you like to see the Eiffel tower, or Arc de Triumph they are usual must sees for tourists."
"We're not tourists. Besides I saw them both earlier."
Sousuke looked down at her. "You did?"
"Yes while we were running away you drove past them both in fact you sent a car right through the arc." Kaname gave him a smug smile.
"Understood. What do you wish to do then?"
"Let me think." They continued walking through the streets in silence. Kaname was having a hard time figuring out what to do. She remembered something she saw in a movie.
"Do they still let people ride in boats on the canals?"
"I am unsure but if you wish to do that I believe I saw a rental location that may allow that near-by." Kaname's face lit up like a child receiving one of those large lolli-pops.
"Really?"
"Yes follow me."
They walked about ten minutes before they reached the place. It was called Pierre's Boat Rentals and Rides. A tall thin man sat behind a counter.
"Hello how may I help you?" Kaname could not understand what he was saying.
"Yes just a rental though no sailor, how much is that?" Sousuke responded. Kaname was annoyed she could not understand. The people at the restaurant spoke English but this guy didn't. The conversation lasted a little longer before Sousuke pulled out euros and paid the man. He led them onto the small pier and unlocked a boat. He thanked the man then help Kaname get inside. He entered the boat then pushed off. He used the oar to set a steady pace down the canal. They passed other boats and buildings as they cruised. Sousuke finally placed down the oar and sat next to Kaname.
"They're beautiful." Kaname looked at the stars with a pleasant expression. Sousuke turned to her not understanding what she meant. He followed her gaze towards the sky. He turned to look at her after briefly glancing. His face took on a kind expression as he watched her. By the look on her face he was doing well. Though this place was nice he would prefer to be back in Tokyo as soon as possible. He might as well make the best of it while he was here. He was relieved she did not want to see the Eiffel tower, or Arc de Triumph because he had seen them before. He would have gladly seen them again if she wanted but luckily she had seen them even if it was in a car during a chase. Her hair fluttered lightly in the wind. She was perfectly illuminated by the fading moon.
"You're beautiful." Sousuke did not realize what he said. It had slipped out. He watched her as she turned to him. She smiled. That sweet, beautiful smile that she reserved for him. He felt his heart skip a beat as it had done few times before. He continued to watch her with his peaceful expression. He slowly lowered himself closer to her. Kaname rested her hands on his chest as she followed to meet him. He brushed his lips across hers before pressing onward. A spark went through them when their lips met. Sousuke opened his eyes to look at her face then closed them again. He felt a strange heat pass through his body. Kaname felt a similar heat through her. Sousuke opened his lips to trace his tongue across her lips. It was a light touch. He was skeptical about it, and hesitated a bit. Kaname noticed as she felt his muscles tense. She hesitated before slightly opening her mouth. She was hesitating herself. She loved the contact but was still a bit worried. Sousuke did not dart his tongue but continued to trace it along her mouth sometimes lightly pressing into hers before pulling back. Sousuke pulled away, and she opened her eyes to look at him. She saw the worry in his eyes, but along with that sat a calm blissful expression as if he had never been happy until now.
"You're beautiful too Sousuke." She rested her forehead against his. Their noses lightly touched as he turned away. "I have to disagree Kaname." Kaname's head was resting against the side of his head. "Why?" Her breath tickled his ear. "Because I am an assassin and…" He was stopped by a finger on his lips and a light peck on his cheek. He smelled the scent of her hair and perfume as she moved closer. "I told you before that is not important Sousuke. That is not who you are it's what you do. You save many lives. You've saved mine a lot as well. If that is you're reason you're wrong. Your more beautiful then anyone I've ever seen." She did not know what was coming over her. But what she said was true.
"Kaname I am not used to these feelings but I do not think I should stay. You should find someone who can stay with you and not cause so much trouble." These were some of his biggest worries with her. That he may ruin something for her that he did not want to.
"I'm not used to them either. I thought I felt them before but I was wrong. I only felt it with you. I wish you would stop saying you'd like to leave for me. Please."
He turned his head to face her again. She was but one centimeter from his face.
"Kaname I love you…" Her eyes went wide for only a moment. Sousuke watched the expression on her face. He was afraid to say it. He feared saying it more then anything. He knew it would be binding if he did. It meant that everything he did would have bigger consequences. Her heart skipped ten beats before going into overdrive. She remembered when she wanted to hear those words from Fuwa. He said them but she could not return his feelings. She was scared to even try anything like this after Leonard had kidnapped her. Now she felt nothing but an inner happiness as if part of her was being filled. Tears welled up in her eyes. Sousuke's expression looked guilty as if he did something wrong.
"I'm sorry I did not mean to make you cry I should not have said anything." He looked really bad. It hurt her heart to see that expression. It amused her at the way he responded to it. She pushed her head against his chest and held on to him tight. "You big dummy these are happy tears. I wanted to hear those words from you but I was scared now I'm…
I love you too Sousuke, with all my heart." He smiled. His chest lightened and it felt as if a huge chip left his shoulder.
He pressed his lips against hers once more.
She felt the spark go through her again. It was wonderful. Her heart was pounding like a jack-hammer inside her chest. All her feelings of fear, and worry left her. This time she parted for him immediately teasing his tongue as they wrestled. She wrapped her arms around his neck. Sousuke brought his hands to her waist and lifted her onto his lap. Sousuke pulled away slowly lightly brushing her lips once more. He enjoyed watching her briefly search for his lips before opening her eyes. "Kaname I have something I wish to give you. She watched him reach into his pocket. He pulled out a small case. She took the small case when he handed it to her. She examined it briefly before preparing to open it. She awed when she saw what was inside. The lapis lazuli stone he had given her for her birthday before was inside. A small shaped piece of silver held on to one end. It was attached to a small silver chain. She looped the chain around her wrist then locked it. She raised it to examine it. "Thank you." She moved forward and kissed him once more before he pulled back.
"We should go back. I have one more place to take you." She looked at him curiously when he said this.
"But you said you had no plans set up."
"I do not. I saw it earlier. It is your choice if you wish to actually go there." "Ok."
Sousuke grabbed the oar, and rowed back. Kaname sat rested against his leg as they slowly made their return. When they returned Sousuke thanked the man, and the two went continued their date.
"So where are we going?"
"I wish to surprise you I have little doubt you will choose not to spend time at the selected location."
"Oh so you know me that well huh?" She sounded smug.
"I hope I know you well. I would not be pleased if all my time spent with you did not enable me to learn at least a little about you."
Kaname looked down. She realized that after all this time she really knew nothing about him and now he had more secrets. She knew he once worked for Mithril, she knew he piloted arm-slaves; she knew he had a past filled with battle and destruction. Despite all that she knew nothing more, except she knew he loved her and for now that would negate her curiosity, after she told him.
"You know Sousuke I don't really know anything about you. I know the gist of your past but no details, and really no more then anyone else, and some things you can do but I do not really know you." Sousuke stopped walking. He took both Kaname's hands in his.
"I promise Chid…"
"Ah uh." She stopped him from getting another one of her demerits.
"I promise Kaname that we will talk about that at least next week. We can get to know a little more at a time. For now let us enjoy tonight. Come." She nodded. "Ok."
He led her down 3 more blocks then turned. "We're here." Kaname's eyes widened reflecting the lights coming from in front of her. She could here low music.
"I remember you came to a place like this before. You looked very happy then. You also said some very kind things to Bonta-kun."
"I know it was you."
"I knew that but…umm…"
Kaname giggled then pulled him along. "Let's go!"
"So what do you want to ride first?" The temporary fair was large for most fairs of that type. They had a good variety of rides.
"I am not efficient in this type of field. You can make the decisions here."
She pulled him along towards the tea cups. "Let's start with something simple."
The fair though having a good amount of people was not packed.
"Are you sure being in this type of vehicle where someone is under control is not safe."
"Jeez Sousuke it's perfectly fine come on." She led him into the cups. She smiled as they span she lightly laughed when she saw the awkward expression on his face. After they finished they rode a roller coaster, bumper cars. Bumper cars were dangerous because someone threatened to hit Kaname's car there was a situation with the vehicle.
"I can't believe you did that!" She pulled him along as she scolded him.
"He said he was going to crash into you Kaname. If you remember we were in a large chase earlier. I only took the best course of action to stop his assault."
"But slamming the car then launching it out of the magnetic area through the fence using an explosive."
"I apologize." He lowered his head. Kaname's expression changed from anger to sadness.
"It's okay." She kissed his cheek then pulled him along again. "Let's get an elephant ear."
"Elephant ear? They kill animals and sell their limbs here. I did not suspect this perhaps there is some ring of poachers is connected with this. I will need to investigate this…What's wrong?"
Kaname was staring at him. This was the third time today she gawked at him after some statement he made.
"You really are clueless, not to mention a crazy otaku. Perfect. Let's go I'll show you what I mean." She led him to a food stand. "One funnel cake please." She took the pastry treat as Sousuke paid. "Funnel cake Kaname you said it was called a…"
"That's a nickname for it Sousuke. Here it's a bakery item. It's covered in powder it's good." She held the delight to his face. He took a bite then slowly chewed it.
"It is not unpleasant."
"Try again. Do you like it yes or no?"
"Affirmative."
"Good let's get another, and some soda then let's find somewhere to sit."
They did purchased another one, and some drinks then sat at an empty table under a tree. Sousuke was still a bit hesitant as he ate it. Kaname while consuming her own watched him with a smile on her face. The night was going more or less smoothly. They had picked an awkward place to fully tell each other their feelings but that was alright, it made tonight all the more special. She found it cute the way he kept looking around even as he was eating. She glanced at her watch. It was almost eleven at night.
"Something wrong Kaname?" He said through his last mouthful of his funnel cake.
"No not really. The signs in the beginning said this place was closing in a few hours. Let's go ride some more." AS she said that she tossed the last small piece of funnel cake into her mouth and sucked out the last of her soda. "Ok let's go."
He grabbed the papers and cups, and dispensed it in the nearest trash can. They rode a few more rides before they ran into a French Bonta-kun. He wore a French hat rather then the little mobster one he wore in Japan. "Want a picture Sousuke?"
"Negative."
"Too bad." She grabbed his wrist and pulled him over to the Bonta-kun.
"Can we have a picture?" She smiled at the Bonta-kun.
"Fumoffu!"
Kaname and Sousuke each stood at one side of the Bonta-kun it's hands on their shoulders. Once the picture was taken Kaname, and Sousuke moved under a near-by tree. It was nice tree a beautiful mixture of green, and red. "Could you take one more?"
The man who took the picture with Bonta-kun agreed. It was his job. They stood right next to each other holding hands. "Hold on let's try something else."
She stood in front of Sousuke then leaned slightly into him. Instinctively he placed his hands around and rest his chin on her head. She wrapped both her arms around his right arm. "Ok." They smiled as the man took the picture. The man took another picture which confused Kaname. She turned her head to find Sousuke looking at her. She could clearly see the emotion that filled his eyes. She turned around slightly to kiss him. They didn't notice as another flash went off. After about ten seconds they broke their embrace.
"We should get the pictures." Kaname kissed hi one more time before walking toward the photographer. He flapped the last of the photos them handed it to them. She noticed that he had taken pictures of the whole thing. She smiled looking at them. "Thank you here's some extra." She pulled out five dollars and handed them to the man. He thanked them, and gave them a small carrying case for the pictures then they went on their way. Kaname placed the pictures in the case then gave them to Sousuke. He pocketed them in his jacket in a large zipper on the inside. They rode a few more rides before Kaname decided she had enough. The walk back was mostly silent except for the occasional short conversation. When they finally made it back to the hotel, and were safe inside their suite she walked into the room and plopped down on the bed. They had stayed until one thirty in the morning. She listened as Sousuke examined the suite. She heard him call that it was safe. She listened as he walked into the room. He walked over to her and kissed on her cheek. She smiled, and made a little sound. "Good night Kaname."
"Good night Sousuke." She heard his footsteps retreating from the room. She instantly sat up. "Sousuke what are you doing?"
"Sleeping on the couch." She heard him grunt as he continued his small walk towards the couch. "No your not!" She stood up and walked out to the living room type area. Sousuke sat on the couch slumped forward his elbows resting on his knees. He had removed his jacket.
"Sousuke what's wrong? Are you sick again?" She walked into the kitchen area and retrieved a glass of water and a pitcher. She placed the pitcher on the table in front of him and tried to hand him the glass. He just sat there trembling slightly.
"I'm sorry Kaname."
"For what?" She placed her hand on his back. He was tense again.
"I should not have come back."
"What why? I'm glad you did Sousuke if you think you've done anything wrong your wrong. I've been so happy lately."
"I have something I should have told you before. I should not have come back for many reasons. I will show you one thing that is wrong with me." Kaname looked at him worriedly. She watched as he removed his shirt, and the beater underneath. Her eyes widened when she saw the strange marks on his body. The pale and darker parts.
"Sousuke what is that?"
"My body, become of some recent events is deteriorating. I do not understand why completely. It had been happening for awhile. My body responds differently as I told you."
Kaname traced the marks on his skin with her hand. Tears formed in her eyes as she did. Soon she was fully crying. She cried into his chest as he held her.
"I'm sorry Sousuke." Her voice was cracked, and shaky.
"It's not your fault." He kissed her hair then pressed his lips against her temple.
"But…you go through so much…by yourself…It's not fair…your life has been…"
"My life has not been the greatest yes. That is not a problem. That life led me to something greater. I am perhaps the most fortunate person in the world for having met you. I would not change anything about my life before. It has been wonderful since I met you. I only regret my failures towards you."
"How long…"
"How long for what?"
"How long do you have to live?"
"I am uncertain. The day I fought Gauron, you remember some of the strange things you saw. That and on the platform when something like that happens and it becomes necessary that I use more force it increases the rate of deterioration."
"That weird stuff…yeah how did you and Gauron do that?"
"I cannot completely explain that either, it is an effect of the lambda driver. Kazuma from A-21 had strange angry outbursts, and lost his memory. He was also capable of piloting a Behemoth for himself. He may have also been whispered. But as you know the lambda driver is still a mysterious force, and has unknown side-effects. That strange force being exhibited without a lambda drive is one."
With her time being whispered and exploring it at Amalgam she became quite aware of the lambda driver technology. She had become quite intelligent all together. But she had no idea what Sousuke was talking about. She had no knowledge of such things happening because of the lambda driver.
"So you don't know when…it could be even tomorrow."
"Negative. Unless I overexert myself to incredibly extreme levels for an extended period of time. The pain alters as it worsens. It usually gets worse. I believe the strange marks on my body may be signs of the deterioration."
Kaname lifted her head to look into his eyes. He didn't look worried. She could see the guilt in his eyes. It hurt him seeing her like this. It had been such a wonderful night and he had to ruin it like this.
"I'm sorry Kaname…"
She stared at him. His eyes were sad. She could clearly see the pit of sorrow inside his grey eyes. She could also see an emotion she could not fully identify. Something that told her he truly could do anything if he tried. She cupped his face and leaned towards him.
"I love you Sousuke I know you'll be alright."
Before he could respond her lips were against his. Soon she was applying more pressure. She pressed her tongue along his lips. He lifted her away from him.
"I can't…I do not want you to continue with me Kaname. I received a call earlier. Tomorrow we will be picked up by Mithril at a location not far from here. It seems there has been more activity. After that they will take you back to Tokyo, I will leave once I have completed what I am doing. You will not have to see me from that point on…"
"Baka!" Her outburst surprised him. She was teary eyed again but she was not crying.
"I don't want you to leave… You can't just say you love someone then tell them your going to leave. Jeez it's hard enough to hear you're dieing… Can't you think of what I want instead of your irrational crap that you think would suit people better?" She turned away. "Crap I'm crying again…I'm so stupid."
"Kaname…"
"No don't worry about it Sousuke…It's okay. We'll talk about this later." She rose to walk away. She took one step before she felt his hand grasp her wrist.
She didn't turn she just tugged at her arm. "Let me go…" Her voice was solid. She did not have any hate; she just didn't want to deal with him right now.
"I…"
She pulled harder. He did not increase his grip. She cursed that he knew how to hold her without hurting her. She could try anyway. "Let me go you're hurting me."
She heard him release air then let go immediately. "I apologize. I did not think that I was perhaps I need to train more." She blew out an exasperated breath.
"Yu didn't hurt me Sousuke I lied to make you let go…" She still didn't turn to him.
"I see…"
They just stood there. Kaname was waiting for what he had to say. She like him wished the night wouldn't end on a bad note.
"You know Sousuke you're a big hypocrite…you say you'll always protect me, and stay with me then you say your going to leave…make up your mind." She didn't mean to be cruel she did not enjoy what she was feeling or the tension in the air but this needed to end.
Sousuke thought about what she just said. It was so simple but she was right. He had been doing that a lot lately.
'I appear to be deficient in a lot of areas lately.' He thought as he stared at her back. He wanted to reach out to her.
"Kaname you are right. I have been foolish. I have decided that I will do my best as long as I can."
"So you changed your mind again." She did not mean to be cruel but she didn't want him to go off and change it again.
"Negative I have not changed my mind. I have merely finished making a decision between my choices. I regret my failure to decide earlier therefore causing you unnecessary trouble."
She smiled he couldn't see it though. Before she could respond she felt his arms wrap around her again. "There is saying that when you love something you must learn to let them go. While that may be true for some cases I do not believe it to be true for all. I believe I should do my best to keep you with me." She shivered slightly as his breath passed over her ear. She almost lost it when he nibbled on it.
"I was told about this by a comrade of mine. I did not fully listen because it did not matter at the time but I did not expect that information to be necessary." She shivered again when his breath brushed across her neck. She leaned her head back as he kissed down the back of her neck. The collar of her blouse obstructed his path.
"I love you Kaname Chidori and with every fiber of my being I do not wish to ever let you go." She smiled then turned in his arms to face him.
"I love you Sousuke Sagara. I won't let you go not even if I have to chase you around the world again."
"Uh." That uh was on purpose. He kissed her again. This was more of an apology from him. She pressed her tongue along his lips. This time he opened to let her in. She grabbed one of his hands and raised it a bit. Sousuke pulled back when it reached her breast.
"Kaname…" He swallowed as he tried to from other words.
"It's okay. Come one let's go to the room." She was blushing. He could tell she was trying really hard to do this. He just followed her, his face still frozen in a type of shock.
She sat on the bed then lowered him down. Her face was as red as his. She began kissing him again. Sousuke hesitated before kissing her back. She briefly broke their mouth's embrace to whisper in his ear. "Touch me Sousuke." Her voice was a seductive low whisper. He felt his temperature rise, and knew his face had to be as red as a tomato or worse. He helped felt Kaname run her hands long his bare chest. He kissed her again then began rubbing his hands along her back. He let his hands roam across her stomach and touch the ends of her breasts through the fabric. She made low sounds as his hands traveled. His hands found their way under her shirt. He hesitated again when he reached her bra. "Hold on." She moved back then removed her shirt. Even though she removed it she covered her breast and looked away. She watched him out of the side of her eye. He took a moment to drink in the sight. "Beautiful." Then he embraced her. He kissed her temple.
"It's okay. We can stop when you wish…" He kissed her again then started his way down leaving a trail of kisses and nibbles. She moaned as he nibbled along her collar bone. She held on to his shoulders as he continued. One hand lightly played with her left breast through her bra. He stopped when she groaned. "Are you ok? I apologize if I hurt you."
He was almost frantic making sure she was alright. She smiled seeing how kind and gentle he was being. She saw the concern mixed the desire in his eyes.
"No that was a good groan Sousuke, what you did felt good."
"Understood." He froze when she kissed his neck. She began imitating what he did to her. He made low sounds as she made her way down. She enjoyed the feel of his muscles. He was well built but not enough that you would really notice it through a shirt yet he was stronger then a lot of people she had seen.
Sousuke was relishing her body. Her athletic nature kept her body well made, and toned to perfection. Even though she was still wearing a bra he could tell her breast despite their size did not sag at all.
"Sousuke…" She pulled her hands away. "I'm not ready yet… let's go to sleep."
"Understood." They looked into each others eyes. They were each relieved and disappointed at the same time. Sousuke passed her, her blouse.
"No let's sleep like this." She was still red, so was he.
"Understood." Kaname prepared the bed while he went around turning everything off, and making sure everything was locked. When he returned the light was dimmed and she was lying under the quilt. He silently slid in next to her.
"I love you Kaname."
"I love you too Sousuke. Good night."
She rested next to him so that their faces were level. They embraced each other as they fell asleep.
