Chapter 27
--
"So Kana how did your trip go?" Kyouko asked as they walked to school. It was a warm morning. After Kaname, and Sousuke had returned they relaxed after Sousuke checked his apartment. Now it was Friday, and next week was final exams.
"It was horrible nothing but bad things happened." Kaname slumped as they walked to school. Sousuke had gotten up early and gone ahead. She spent a tedious morning having to get up before seven to get things done on time.
"Really you didn't meet up with Sousuke-kun?" Kyouko was looking for details about where Kaname had been taken after the incident at the hotel.
"Yeah right. Our last field trip this year and that military misfit messed up again." Kaname and Kyouko turned the corner leading to the front of the school. They saw a large group of students standing outside of it.
'No way, we just got back.' Kaname turned to enter the school but a large gate was blocking her. "What's going on?" She asked one of the near-by students.
"Sagara says there are some chemicals that got loose. He said he's going to take care of it." Just as the boy finished an explosion could be heard coming from the science lab. Soon a mushroom cloud followed. Kaname clenched her fist and looked down.
"Kana-chan…" Kyouko reached for Kaname's shoulder. Before she actually made it Kaname ran and leapt up the fence. She let out a horrible scream as well as started flashing as she was horribly electrocuted and sent back on the floor. Kaname lay on her back in a smoking uniform twitching. Kyouko walked over to examine her. "Kana-chan are you ok?"
"So…ske…" After that a few grunts and growling could be heard coming from Kaname. She was instantly back up and on her feet. She leapt over the regular wall. When she was over she left a dust cloud as she rushed towards the science lab. She ducked when another explosion went off. "Son of a…" She was back on her feet in no time and rushing like a herd of bulls to her unsuspecting victim.
"Just a few more." Sousuke collected the details of every chemical then added it to the pile. He was wearing a gas mask and protective equipment. He had been heating up the chemicals then using incendiary grenades, and fragmentation grenades to destroy most of the chemicals after placing them in a grenade proof container. After that he planned on cleaning everything. He collected and piled up more chemicals. "SSSSOOUUUUSUKAAAAY!"
Sousuke turned towards the door. The shout came from somewhere down the hall. Despite his absence he did not forget that sound. "Chidori's coming. Hopefully she has already donned the proper safety equipment." He turned back to his work. He ignored the sound of the door slamming open figuring it was Kaname. "SOUSUKE!"
The familiar TWHAP! Could be heard as Sousuke flew into the pile of chemicals. Breaking the vials and glasses and mixing them on the floor and on the suit. "Chidori you should go."
"What, why?" She placed her hands on her hips. Suddenly smoke started rising from the chemical mixtures. "Mixing so many unknown chemicals is not good. You should head to a shower as soon as possible."
"And you…?"
"I will clean this up before it gets out of hand."
"It already is out of hand moron. What the hell are you doing blocking out the students in the street so you can blow things up?"
"I was in the school early. Someone was here and tampered with the chemicals. They could have set something to go off. The best course of action is to take their information destroy the rest, and dispose of their tools and chemicals." Sousuke looked at the gases beginning to rise. "Forgive me Chidori." Sousuke walked up and took her harisen.
"What now Sousuke?" Sousuke swung the harisen and sent Kaname out of the classroom. She landed against a wall with a shocked expression. Sousuke walked towards the door. He had a worried look on his face. He knew he was in trouble.
"For now you should take a shower and use a respirator then head to a doctor to be checked I will take care of the rest." Sousuke tossed her her usual weapon of choice. Kaname heard strange noises as the door closed. When she got up she was angry despite the fact that he did that for her safety. When she tried to open the door it would not budge. She slammed on the door. "BAKA!"
She sighed then resigned to her fate. She headed for the showers. At least no one else would be in there for now. In the shower Kaname almost rubbed through her skin because of her frustration with Sousuke. She scrubbed harder every time another explosion went off. She relaxed when she heard the explosions had stopped. After cleaning herself she grabbed a towel and stepped out of the shower. She didn't notice the door open as she dried her hair.
"Kaname are you in here?" Sousuke carefully walked deeper into the bathroom. Though he knew there were no other females in the bathroom all it took was one to get angry and throw things at him, or worse. In this case it didn't even have to be Kaname. When he turned he found Kaname standing there drying her hair with a towel. Sousuke stood stiff. Kaname was bent forward drying the length of her hair. Her rear stuck out and stretched against the towel that barely made it down her thighs. Sousuke disregarded it and took on his serious expression. "Chidori the doctor in the school is not currently here and I am not allowed to let her in. I have medical supplies to check you, or if you prefer I can take you to the nearest clinic or hospital. If it becomes necessary I may let the doctor in. It is no longer dangerous but stay away from the room while I clean it. I am here to make sure nothing has happened."
Kaname looked backwards still in her bent position. She had been humming to herself as she dried herself and heard nothing he said. Her face turned red as she shot up.
"Sousuke…"
"Kaname did you hear me?"
"Of course I didn't hear you come in, if I just let you stand there peeping Hentai!" Kaname fist came towards him. It stopped just short of making contact with his face.
"Did you peep while I was in the shower?"
"Negative I was not oomph!" Sousuke went bouncing around the room with the power of her punch. He had dented every locker before he finally stopped. When he stood up Kaname was gone.
"Damn that stupid perverted otaku nut!" she stomped down the hall unaware of the actual situation.
"Why am I always the one left to take care of him? Huh?" She stopped in front of the room where he had been working. The door was no longer quarantined, but it had a caution sign. She remembered something faint about it being safe to go in now. She slid the door open. The room was mostly clean. Desks had to be put back in place or replaced, and there were garbage bags in the room. She noticed a clear quarantine bag by the washing area. The suit Sousuke had worn was in it. She noticed a red stain probably some chemical waste that got on the suit. Other then that the room checked out. She could help with the garbage while she was here she thought. Kaname picked up the regular trash bags and started heading towards the back of the school.
"I trust this will not be happening again Mr. Sagara." Sousuke stood at attention in front of the principle. "That is uncertain ma'am. If I install a security system with weaponry, and other forms of tactical defense intrusion may be avoided and I will not have to go through so many procedures to ensure the safety of our school."
The principle forced a smile a sweat drop appearing on her head. "No, that won't be necessary Mr.Sagara thank you."
"Understood. You may now enter the school. I will have the electrical gate removed by the end of the day.
"Thank you. Where is Ms. Chidori wasn't she with you this morning?"
"Negative she entered the school without permission and was almost exposed to dangerous chemicals. I had her wash then sent her to some form of medical facility or doctor. If she has not done so then hopefully our school doctor will be able to tend to her."
The principle nodded before entering the school. The students following right after her.
Sousuke still had to finish in the science room so he started on his way as well. Before he could get anywhere someone grabbed his wrist. Sousuke was about to flip the person before he recognized who it was.
"Sagara-kun what happened to Kana?" Sousuke turned to face Kyuoko.
"She entered a quarantined area and was almost exposed to dangerous chemicals. Don't worry the room is clear and she is unharmed. I still recommend she receives medical supervision quickly if she hasn't already. Just to make sure her status is unaffected."
"Oh. She seemed pretty mad after she tried to jump the fence and got shocked."
Sousuke sighed and closed his eyes. "Chidori must learn to respect certain security protocols or she will end up hurt someday or worse."
"You'll protect her though won't you? No matter what."
Sousuke turned to Kyouko.
"Affirmative." Kyouko smiled then grabbed Sousuke's arm.
"Come on let's go find Kaname."
"But you must be going to class."
"Sousuke today we'll be doing nothing but studying, we have final exams next week it's no big deal."
"Understood."
Sousuke was about to lead Kyouko to the science lab when someone else called his name. He began to sweat profusely when he heard the voice.
He turned to see Tessa tears welling up in her eyes.
"Greetings Cap- I mean Tessa." Tessa ran up to him and jumped into his arms hugging him. He turned to Kyouko who had a confused and worried look on her face. He then turned when he heard another pair of footsteps approaching them. Leonard had apparently joined Tessa. The men held stares for about 10 seconds before Tessa let go of Sousuke to speak to him. "How are you Sousuke? I thought you died how did you survive?"
"Died?" Kyouko looked from one person to another.
"Is Kaname here?" Kyouko turned to the silver haired young man. He wore the school uniform but kept it open at the front. His bluish eyes seemed to sparkle as did his smile. Kyuoko stared for a moment realizing the intimacy in which he asked that question.
"We were about to go look for her. Hi I'm Kyouko." Kyouko tried her best to smile. Though she was not aware that Leonard had caused so much trouble before she still felt strange, an unease about him. Leonard kissed her hand out of polite habit. "I am Leonard Testarossa." Kyouko thought a moment. She was attempting to remember where she had heard the name before.
"I saw you in Okinawa. Or at least you were in an arm-slave. Kaname mentioned your name."
Leonard smiled. He knew who Kyouko was. He hoped no one would know who he was.
"That is right that was me. My dear sister and I are here for the final week of school on vacation. We have finished our exams and she wished to return here before school ended. We will be here all of next week as well. I hope the school will not mind."
"We have final exams next week but I think its okay." She turned to Sousuke. "Come one let's go find Kaname."
"Roger. Ms. Tessa you two should head to class I'm sure you know where it is."
Without waiting for a response he walked with Kyouko towards the school.
Some of the bags were missing when they entered. "Tokiwa be careful." Sousuke pulled out his gun. He started walking around the room slowly.
"What's wrong Sousuke?"
"Some one has been in here. Some of the garbage bags are missing. I believe they may have been looking for information or traces of the chemicals and took what they could get. It must have been one person because most of the bags are still here. To go through all this and find what they needed so quickly they must have been a professional."
"Don't you think you're over-reacting? Maybe the janitor started cleaning this room up, or maybe Kaname you know how good she is with garbage pick up."
"Yeah but the only garbage I can't get rid of is the stuff in Sousuke's head." Kaname stopped when she reached Kyouko.
"So have you clobbered Sagara-kun today? I saw some bumps on him."
Kaname sighed then looked at the soldier who was still wandering around the room searching for evidence of an intruder.
"Yeah I hit him what do you expect. He was blowing up chemicals and stuff. The he let some out. You remember what happened with that virus he brought to school don't you?"
Kyouko turned red. "How could I forget?" Of course that was not the only reason she had struck him today. Sousuke walked towards them putting away his gun.
"Chidori it's good to see you're alright. Whoever it was has already escaped. I will see what I can find. Sadly the students have entered the school and tracing the culprit will be difficult but I believe if I…" Kaname slammed him into the floor with the harisen.
"Don't you listen to anyone? Kyouko told you it might have been me and it was so would you calm down."
Sousuke shot up. "Kaname you are the one searching for documents and chemicals. Are you being forced to do this? Is someone you know in danger?" Sousuke received another whack from the harisen.
"Jeez I threw the trash away. Now you can throw the rest away mister. Come on Kyouko." Kaname walked away heading for the classroom. Kyouko took one last glance at Sousuke before following her.
"Well at least there is no problems, mostly." Sousuke picked up more bags then started on his way towards the back of the school. He winced when he picked up a heavy bag in his right hand. "Baka…" He closed the room as he exited.
"Sagara…" Sousuke turned to face the speaker.
"Ok everyone we have some visitors for the end of the year. You know one of them but she has brought her brother along this time." Ms.Kagurazaka gave the opening for Tessa and Leonard to enter the room. Tessa was greeted with cheers and joy. Everyone looked at Leonard. The girls could not stop staring. He smiled at the class. My name is Leonard Testarossa. I am Teletha's twin brother."
Everyone examined them both to look at the resemblance. Leonard's feminine type appearance did not make the girls think him less attractive. Kaname was ready to blow something up. What the hell was he doing here? She had had enough of him for the past few months, and on the sub. She turned to Kyouko who photographed her expression.
"Hey Kana isn't that the guy from Okinawa the one in the AS."
"Yes." Kaname slumped her head onto the table.
"Ok everyone settle down. You two can take some empty seats." Tessa took a seat near the one chosen on her last visit Leonard took Sousuke's. Kaname rose and glared at the young man behind her.
"Hello Kaname dear. Sorry." He smiled kindly at her.
"That's Sousuke's seat. You need to move."
He smiled again and moved to the empty seat on her right. Much to his pleasure and to her displeasure it was an empty seat. Kaname felt her hair stand up when she heard whispers spread about the classroom. She knew what they would be talking about. She glared at Leonard. He gave her a challenging glance before looking towards the teacher.
Before anything could continue the bell to end homeroom rang. Kaname was partially relieved as she made her way to the next class. She was stopped by Leonard before she could turn the corner.
"We need to talk."
Kaname turned to face him. He did not have the usual arrogance expressed on his face. He actually looked kind, and sorry. The difference made her focus on it to much to realize she was supposed to answer. "I want to apologize for what I did, and make it up to you."
"You had your chance and you were an asshole even on the sub after what happened."
"I saw he was alive."
"Lucky for him or I would have kicked his ass."
Leonard smiled at the way she seemed to treat Sousuke. The things she said she would do to him. She had never been able to treat Leonard that way except that time on the sub. He thought about everything then. Kaname caught on and scolded herself inwardly.
"Listen I don't have time Leonard it's almost final exams and I have a lot I need to do." She did not use an angry tone.
"I understand but I wish to speak to you sometime soon. Please." He touched her cheek. She instantly pulled away. "I'll think about it Leonard I'm busy. I'll see you later." She turned and started heading to her next class. Leonard smiled when he realized he had to follow her. He looked around examining the faces of the eavesdroppers. That scene must have looked like something. He knew Kaname would probably not be pleased. He should have taken it elsewhere. He shrugged his shoulders as he went n his way. He saw his sister laughing with some friends on the way to class.
"Ok someone in what year was Nagasaki bombed by the U.S.?" Mr. Fujisaki asked as he stood at the front of the class.
"Where do you think Sousuke is?" Kyouko leaned over whispering to Kaname.
"He's probably out doing something otaku again." Kaname's cheek rested on her hand.
"Anyone. How do you expect to pass the final exams without even knowing this?"
Tessa raised her hand. "Nagasaki was bombed in 1945."
"Correct. But unfortunately Ms. Testarossa you are not in the class. Hopefully the others took note of that answer." Tessa looked down. She had not meant to make her friends feel bad as she was sure she did.
"Come one Kana you're not worried about him at all. After the way you kissed him at the hotel…" Kaname slapped her hand over Kyouko's mouth.
"Keep it down okay. We're in the middle of class and I don't need to hear about it."
"Are you ashamed? If you are you can always find someone else."
"No I'm not ashamed I just don't want to hear anything from anyone. You girls know but that's it. Let everyone find out on their own."
"But how will they if you two never do anything?"
"Jeez Kyouko you sound like you want the world to know."
"Well when my two best friends get tommmemmer…" Kaname put her hand over Kyouko's mouth again.
"Come on Kyouko."
"Excuse me is there something you wish to share with the class Ms. Chidori?" Mr. Fujisaki tapped his pointer.
"Heh heh, no sir." Kaname rubbed the back of her head.
"Well then we would like to continue with this lesson please. Why don't you tell me how long the Jomon period of early Japan lasted?"
"Umm…it lasted from… 1300 BC to 300BC."
"Incorrect. Ms. Chidori I suggest you listen in class today or you can take remedial classes on the weekend. The answer was 13000 BC to 300 BC."
Kaname lowered her head. She knew the answer she was just so nervous she couldn't think.
Kaname tuned to glare at Kyouko who had an I'm sorry signal up.
"Ms. Tokiwa since you insisted on disrupting with Ms. Chidori you can answer the next one. What is the estimated year Buddhism was promoted to Japan."
Kyouko looked down deep in thought. "Around 538 is one of them I think."
"That is correct Ms Tokiwa. Now Ms. Chidori if you can name the other one I may change my mind."
"552..." Kaname said the simple answer with a sigh. This was easy she was just nervous earlier.
"Excellent. Hopefully we can continue the class in peace."
--
His brown-yellow eyes reflected the sun as they stood outside. He was completely focused on the man in front of him. This was the first real duel they would be having since Sousuke had returned. Their last battle was interrupted by Mizuki. Now they would have no disruptions.
"Are you ready Sagara?"
"Affirmative."
Tsubaki put on his glasses. They both stood there. Waiting as the wind flew around them. A single leaf danced in the wind slowly descending in its subtle dance. The leaf took its seat in the center upon the ground. Tsubaki lunged at Sousuke. Sousuke dodged the oncoming punch. Sousuke did not expect the kick that followed immediately after from his other side. Sousuke brought his arms up to block the attack. Sousuke slid on his feet backwards when Tsubaki kicked him. Sousuke opened his eyes. He could not see Tsubaki. Sousuke ducked as a kick swept past his head. He leapt forward to dodge the following blow.
"What's the matter Sagara? Can't keep up." Tsubaki rushed at Sousuke again. He blocked his foot with his right hand and kicked at Tsubaki. Tsubaki easily did the same but he pushed off the ground with his foot and flipped. Sousuke stepped away as his kick came crashing down putting a whole in the ground where Sousuke stood.
Tsubaki smirked when he turned to Sousuke.
"While you were gone saving Kaname, I was getting stronger. I want revenge for losing to you, and for you getting Kaname taken."
Sousuke said nothing as Tsubaki lunged at him again. Sousuke moved Tsubaki's hand downward and brought his knee upward but Tsubaki blocked it and swept his foot under Sousuke. Sousuke's feet flew from under him and he was horizontal in the air for a second before Tsubaki with aura around his fist slammed Sousuke into the ground. A small crevice was made where Sousuke hit. Tsubaki took a step back. Sousuke rose from the ground. He spit out blood then wiped his mouth.
"You really are weak Sagara. Your endurance is amazing I have to give you that. Now watch this." Tsubaki thrust his fist forward. Sousuke'e eyes widened then he jumped to the side as the wave flew past him. Sousuke turned his head towards Tsubaki who had a proud grin on his face. He kicked sending another wave towards Sousuke. He jumped to the side again.
'Tsubaki is sending waves of his aura at me… but he has had no contact with lambda drivers or black technology…This fight may be more dangerous than previously predicted.'
Sousuke stepped back as Tsubaki did a flying kick towards his face. He fought the urge to pull out one of his weapons. He said he'd honor Issei with a no weapons match. That may have been a mistake. Of course Sousuke wasn't a civilian. He had skills as a soldier, training in guerilla tactics, and assassination skills as a hitokiri, among other things. If he couldn't do this he might as well give up defeating his opponents. Sousuke grabbed Tsubaki's fist before it made contact and flipped him over. Tsubaki flipped and landed on his feet. "What's wrong can't defeat me without your under handed tricks? YAH!" Tsubaki waved his arm sending another wave of his aura. Sousuke parried it with a strange motion of his hand. "Now that's better!" Tsubaki rushed towards him. Sousuke rushed forward as well. The dirt around them flew up when their fist collided. Tsubaki roundhouse kicked at Sousuke. He ducked then did an upper cut. Tsubaki move his head back then punched at Sousuke's opening. Sousuke brought his arm down and stepped into the punch. "What!" Tsubaki was surprised by his action. The close range lowered the power put into the punch and his ability to effectively dodge or counter. Sousuke brought his fist around and slammed it into Tsubaki's jaw. Tsubaki flew down. After quickly recovering he went after Sousuke again. Sousuke kicked at him. Tsubaki grabbed his leg and brought his fist to his stomach knocking Sousuke back. Sousuke stood up. That was two hits he had taken to his abdominal area. He spit out more blood. He didn't doubt that he might have an internal injury now. Tsubaki was being serious. He thought back to when Tsubaki challenged him.
"Sagara!" Tsubaki called to Sousuke as he turned to take the garbage bags.
Sousuke turned to face the green-haired martial artist.
"Yes…"
"I want to fight you…for real this time none of those crap jokes we've pulled before."
"I do not understand I have never joked with you."
Tsubaki had forgotten Sousuke's seriousness towards things and did not realize he wouldn't understand exactly what he meant. "The way we fought before. It was nothing. The only time we really fought was that first time at the dojo. That was interrupted by Kaname."
"Negative you put down your guard and I defeated you then."
"Here me out. I'll help you take out the trash, and you fight with me a real match. No weapons or tricks. You can do whatever you want that doesn't involve using an item of any kind. I'll show you how strong I've become."
Sousuke stared at Issei. He could tell by the look in his eyes that he was really serious. Something had changed about Tsubaki since then. What he saw actually intrigued him. He would fight him even without the help.
"So how about it Sagara? I won't take no for an answer."
Sousuke looked away and grinned. "Okay Tsubaki. Help me complete my task properly and I will fight you."
"Alright. Just get the garbage bags right."
"Correct." Tsubaki ran inside and grabbed as many as he could. They were able to finish in two trips. After that Tsubaki felt his excitement rise as they walked out to the field. Sousuke was watching him the entire time trying to figure it out.
"Will you accept a match to the death Tsubaki?" Sousuke started checking his weapon before removing them.
"Death or Total knock out is fine with me."
"Understood." Sousuke placed his weapons aside. When he rose to prepare for battle he could the fire burning in Tsubaki's eyes.
Sousuke moved into a fighting stance. Tsubaki did the same.
Sousuke lunged toward Tsubaki who stepped back. Sousuke moved so that his next motion fell into an attack. Tsubaki actually dodged this attack. He was surprised when Sousuke's continued movements were part of another attack. Tsubaki ducked the kick that came at him and moved in for a strike. Sousuke dodged the punch his body moving as if it were water. He turned to hit Tsubaki again. Tsubaki blocked it but was sent sliding back by the force of the attack. "I get it Sagara. You were playing before. Well you won't win just for that."
Tsubaki moved towards Sousuke his image disappearing. Sousuke stepped back as he appeared his fist coming towards his stomach. Sousuke moved back fast enough that Tsubaki's fist made only brief contact. He went flying back anyways. Sousuke coughed up more blood when he flew into a tree.
Sousuke stood up again. Tsubaki grinned before disappearing again.
"You said no weapons Tsubaki."
"I'm not using weapons." Tsubaki's face came from around Sousuke.
"So how are you disappearing?"
"I told you I have gotten much stronger Sagara." He still could not identify the location of Tsubaki from his voice. It sounded as if he was everywhere.
"That can't be true only people who are whispered or exposed to…"
"I don't know what you're talking about Sagara. You're just too slow."
Something clicked in Sousuke's head. An image of a silver haired man from before appeared before him.
'I don't understand Sagara. You're just too slow.' The image then disappeared.
"That's right when I first fought him…he said my weapons were useless. That I was too slow. That I did not understand. He did not understand some things either. Maybe…"
Sousuke closed his eyes.
"Now what are you talking about Sagara? Talking to yourself. You think closing your eyes will help. You can't do it you're no fighter."
Tsubaki's fist came from the side. Sousuke brought his hand up to block it. He grunted when Tsubaki's fist smashed into his jaw sending him flying. Sousuke rolled before he stopped on his knees. When he looked at Tsubaki he turned into the silver haired man with the sword. The image faded again leaving the green haired fighter.
"Get up Sagara."
Sousuke slowly stood up. Tsubaki grinned again. Sousuke kept his eyes on him. He watched as Tsubaki moved. Sousuke was barely able to keep up with him with his eyes. His speed rivaled that of the swordsman from before. Sousuke blocked Tsubaki's constant assaults. Every foot or fist that came flying at him he blocked or dodged despite the speed. Tsubaki's fist smashed into his fore arm. Sousuke winced when he made contact. The red stain on the bandages on his arm spread. Sousuke opened his eyes but could not see Tsubaki. That one second was all he needed to disappear from Sousuke's sight. Sousuke looked around attempting to find him again. All he could see was the occasional flash of his image. Sousuke caught the image and followed it for a moment. Tsubaki was running in circles around him and trying to follow him like that would have been a stupid move. Sousuke ducked when Tsubaki's kicked for his head from the front. Sousuke took advantage and kicked Tsubaki. Tsubaki made a horrible groan as Sousuke's foot made contact with his special areas. He groaned and stumbled back as he grabbed his genitals. "Sagara you under-handed…ooohhh." Tsubaki fell to his knees. The force of the kick and where it hit was a very dangerous combination. Sousuke said nothing as he ran towards Tsubaki. Tsubaki caught Sousuke's fist then span on his foot and slammed into Sousuke's elbow. A horrible crunching noise could be heard as Sousuke's arm bent the wrong way. Tsubaki stepped back as Sousuke gripped his arm.
"Hurts doesn't it." Tsubaki spit out some blood. He watched as Sousuke fell on one knee still gripping his no doubt broken bone. He watched as Sousuke's hand twitched.
Sousuke held one eye closed and clenched his teeth to hold back a little pain. He knew his arm was definitely broken if not worse. He would need to check it. He'd be lucky if it was even useable anymore. He was fortunate his bone didn't pop out of his arm. He kept his eye on Tsubaki. Tsubaki started walking towards him.
"It's over Sagara." His eyes widened when he saw Sousuke reach across his arm. He felt a disgusting feeling go down his spine as Sousuke swiftly moved his arm to its proper location the horrible sound of his bones reverberating in Tsubaki's head.
"Kaname's right to call you crazy. You're some kind of monster."
He watched Sousuke as he rose. Sousuke kept his cold glare on Tsubaki. He moved his arm around to check that it worked. Though he showed no indication of it moving his arm around hurt terribly. But at least it worked. He stared at Tsubaki's face. The expressions of disgust, anger, and pride crossed Issei's face. Sousuke knew conventional means would not work against Tsubaki. What ever he did Tsubaki became very strong very quickly. Sousuke stood normally his arms hanging at his sides taking up no defensive positions. He knew this was similar to his fight with Col. He already sensed similarities in their styles of fighting. This confirmed it but hits was different.
"It's over Sagara…" Tsubaki punched sending another wave. Sousuke took a step forward and to the side easily avoiding the wave. Tsubaki kicked then punched again sending two more. Sousuke blocked both.
"I understand now Tsubaki."
Tsubaki looked at him confused. He had not mentioned anything to Sousuke for him to understand. Tsubaki smirked when the realization of what he meant came to mind.
"That's good Sagara but it won't save you." Tsubaki brought his fist back to send another wave. Sousuke punched sending his own before Tsubaki could. Tsubaki brought his arms up to block the attack. He fell backwards from the force. He jumped back to his feet and took up a battle position. Sousuke disappeared the second he caught sight of him. Tsubaki grunted and spit out blood as he flew back from Sousuke's high-speed punch. He landed on his feet holding his stomach.
"Good job Sagara but my endurance is much better then it used to be. Since this is getting interesting want to make a wager."
"No problem."
"Good. If I win and you survive I get Kaname."
"Negative."
"Why you know you'll lose?"
"Incorrect. It is merely not my place to decide what happens to Kaname."
"Fine then if I win you leave forever."
"Understood and if I win."
"I'll leave Kaname alone and never challenge you for her again. I won't fight you for at least half a year."
"That is acceptable."
"Good let's go then."
Tsubaki rushed towards Sousuke again disappearing from view. Sousuke did the same thing. No one inexperienced would be able to follow the two warriors. They stopped and stood in one spot trading blows. None of them heard as the school bell rang. Blood shot out of them as they punched each others faces and bodies. Every time they clashed something flew up. Tsubaki placed another hit on Sousuke's chest sending back and onto the floor.
"Give up Sagara any more and you'll die."
"It's…not a…problem…" Sousuke grunted each word as he stood up. He winced when he felt the pain in his broken arm, and other injured arm. He was doing good at getting into bad conditions lately. Tsubaki walked up to kick Sousuke again. Sousuke though still grounded grabbed the oncoming attack. Tsubaki winced in pain when Sousuke began crushing his shin. He pulled back and grabbed his leg. He lifted his pant leg to check the injury. He had a bruise where Sousuke had grabbed him.
He lost his breath when a surprise punch from Sousuke collided into his stomach. Tsubaki suddenly felt exhausted as he lifted himself. "What…the hell?"
He still had less endurance then Sousuke. This next hit would most likely be the death of one of them. They didn't hesitate as they sped towards each other.
"Hold it!" They both turned to see something white, green, red, and blue before feeling something hard and everything going black.
He was in a room when he opened his eyes. His head hurt when he tried to get up so he lied back down. He took about five seconds before trying again. He was successful this time. When he sat up he examined everything. There was a curtain on one end of the bed. The amount of light entering the room meant that they had plenty of daylight hours. He went to check his watch but it was gone. He looked down and noticed he wore only black beater, pants and socks. He had an elbow cast on his left arm keeping him from bending it. His right hand that had been injured earlier had a fresh set of bandages. He had a band-aid on his cheek. He looked down and saw Kaname was asleep resting her upper-half on the bed.
"So you're awake." The nurse walked up to him. "That was quite a scuffle you two had. We knew you guys fought but that one today was really something. You both were banged up pretty good but you're healing remarkably well. Your arm there is going to have to stay in that cast…HEY!"
Sousuke pulled a combat knife out and cut off the elbow cast. Where he pulled the knife from is unknown. The nurse walked over as he moved his arm.
"What is wrong with you? That's dangerous. I know you're a mercenary and all but come on you need to know when to rest." The nurse crossed her arms as she watched him. "Well does it hurt?"
"Negative it is working perfectly."
"You really are something." The nurse pulled out a stethoscope and checked his heart-beat. She checked his arm herself and made sure he was okay.
"You know you should be careful. I heard about what you did in the science lab this morning. When I checked your right arm you already had a bandage on it. You cleaned the wound well but getting that many chemicals on you is dangerous."
"It only burned through a little bit of my skin it should be mostly healed."
"You're right about that. You don't have a scar but you heal incredibly well."
"That is a skill me and some of my comrades have. Kurz is also exceptional at healing."
"You mean the guy who substituted for Ms. Kagurazaka once."
"Yes and recently as a assistant gym teacher."
"Well ok. When you're ready you can go." She noticed Sousuke looking down at Kaname's sleeping figure.
"You know you worried her sick. She was angry at you but was worried about the condition you were in. Whether you can tell or not she cares a lot. She stayed by you the whole time. She even accepted remedial courses for the weekend to be able to stay with you. You're a lucky guy."
"I know." Sousuke stepped out of the bed. He heard groaning from the bed next to him. He moved the curtain to see Issei Tsubaki rising from his slumber.
"Did I win?"
"Negative I believe it was a draw."
"Dammit. I won't accept…" Tsubaki fell back to sleep.
"He'll be okay. You were more banged up then he was but you two come from different places. I'll make sure he gets home okay. You be careful yourself. Also Tessa wanted to check on you and her brother was here as well. I didn't let them in but you should let them know your okay. Leonard was here to see Kaname but don't worry."
"Understood. Do you know where my weapons are?"
"Someone tried touching them and got hurt by some trap so they tossed a cloth over it and put a do not disturb sign. You're stuff should still be there. Here you go." The nurse pulled out his shoes, button-up shirt, and uniform shirt. "They've been cleaned."
"Thank you." Sousuke put on the rest of his clothes. He bent down next to Kaname.
"You know those are some nasty scars. She didn't go crazy when she saw them or anything. She's tough."
"Thank you." Sousuke lightly nudged Kaname. "Chidori wake up." Kaname mumbled something then stretched her arms across the bed. She searched the bed with her hand while her eyes were closed. She opened them when she couldn't feel anything.
"Chidori it's time to go."
"Sousuke. You're okay."
"Affirmative. I need to collect my weapons however."
Kaname yawned and rubbed her eyes. She stood up and turned to Sousuke.
"Thank you."
Kaname looked confused.
"For what?"
"For staying with me."
Kaname smiled before resting against his chest. "No problem."
"So you two are together." Kaname turned to see the nurse sitting there with a grin on her face. Her eyes sly through her glasses.
"We have to be going now thank you." Sousuke took Kaname's hand and pulled her out of the nurse's office. He did not slow down as he made his way to where his weapons should be. Kaname stopped him when they reached the stairs. Sousuke turned to face her.
"What is it?"
"Why didn't you tell me you got hurt this morning with the chemicals? See if you go around doing things like that you'll get hurt. Also why the hell were you and Tsubaki outside killing each other?"
Sousuke ran his hand through his hair.
"The injury was not important as I'm sure you know I have healed. As for the fight with Tsubaki I had to confirm something. I did not expect what happened when we engaged in combat. I learned more then I expected too."
"So you almost died so you could learn something." She put her hands on her hips her face annoyed.
"It was very important what I learned."
"That's good. Let's go then. We still have about three hours of school left."
"I was not asleep the long then."
"Yeah but I still have to take classes tomorrow for the ones I missed."
"I will take care of it. If you'd prefer we can study together at one of our apartments. My skills in Ancient Japanese are still poor. "
"Ok. I'm trusting you."
"It's not a problem." They made their way out to collect his things before heading back to class. "If we hurry we can still have lunch."
"Roger."
Sousuke collected his things and they returned to class in record time. Kaname wondered how he put all those weapons in his clothes. He had given her an answer along the lines of properly placing everything. She screamed at him about fitting a rocket launcher in his pants. He gave her his usual it's not a problem. When they entered the class Kyuoko looked at them. Kaname was surprised to see the rest of her friends there as well. They had heard she returned from wherever she went and was actually in school today. Tessa was there as well as Leonard. She figured both their intentions. Leonard decided to settle on waiting besides he was currently being swarmed by girls. He would have his chance soon. Tessa was with her own friends. She made a brief hello before continuing her time with them.
"Hey girls." Kaname said as she walked up to them, Sousuke right behind her.
"Hello Kaname-san how are you?" Ren had been pretty concerned when Kaname was gone. Not as much as Kyouko though.
"I'm fine. Are you guy's okay I heard you were in like a hospital or something after what happened."
"Yes we're quite well. Our friends came to check on us after the first day. We only stayed an hour more before being released in perfect health."
"Yeah but that was hell. Hey Sousuke why did you almost kill my Tsubaki. Even worse they wouldn't let me stay by him like they let Kaname stay by you."
Kaname blushed and looked sideways. Sousuke stared at her with his usual expressionless face. "Tsubaki wished for a match. He said his skills had grown. He was not incorrect. It was to be a battle to the death but Chidori had distracted us causing us both to lose. It appears she did not understand the significance of that match."
Kaname swung her harisen. Sousuke merely bent forward. "Chidori that hurt. What was that for?"
"What do you mean didn't understand the significance of the match. You were trying to kill each other and after the stunt you pulled."
"My apologies. Though I did not plan on what happened before."
"Exactly moron. I don't need you going off and dieing again."
"Roger."
Kaname turned back to her friends. "So how did the rest of the trip go."
Maya, and Shiori stepped forward. "It was awesome. We went to a fair, and saw a museum that was actually cool. Saw some beautiful sights. It was amazing you should have been there Kaname."
"No I think most of my trip was a little better." Kaname smiled and looked at Sousuke. Sousuke looked at her then nodded and looked away. She smiled then returned to talking with her friends.
"Hey Sousuke-kun what's up!" Sousuke turned to see Shinji coming over.
"Sousuke what happened to you. You left and then the next day I heard there was some big fight in Paris with arm-slaves on the news. The cameras were being jammed like in Australia but it still looked amazing just seeing those blurs go at it. I wish I could have seen it."
Sousuke was glad the system to jam the cameras of lower technology still worked well.
He turned back to the girls when he felt something nudge his shoulder. Kaname was pushing into him with a bento lunch. "Here you go. After that you're probably hungry."
Sousuke said nothing and hesitated before taking the food. He looked down as he thanked her.
"No problem." She turned to sit and eat her own bento.
"So Kaname there's a rumor going around that you and Leonard know each other if you know what I mean." Mizuki leaned towards her.
Kaname banged her chest as tried to swallow down a piece of food that got caught when she Mizuki mention the rumor.
"No way I know him that's all."
"Yeah remember Kana likes Sousuke." Kaname roughly swallowed her drink. If this kept up this would most likely be her most difficult lunch ever.
"Didn't I say to keep it down?" Kaname started crumpling the can of soda.
"Come on Kaname you two make a good couple. I mean most of us expected it."
"Speaking of which where is our famous hero." They looked around the room but found no trace of Sousuke.
2 minutes before.
Sousuke silently exited the classroom. His expression changed when he exited sight of anyone. He turned and walked down the hall. He went to drop the full bento in the trash. He stopped when he remembered it wasn't his. He tossed it in his bag.
"I've made a mistake…" he continued his walk down the hall. "I cannot leave until I fix Chidori's problem. I will get her out of the remedial classes first. Hayashimizu should be able to help with that." Sousuke headed towards the council room having no doubt he would be there for lunch. He suspected Ren would usually be with him but she probably explained the situation. He probably did nothing to complain and let her go in good graces. Sousuke slid the door to the council room open. Hayashimizu was looking over papers. He turned to Sousuke. The smile on his face fading when he saw Sousuke's expression. "May I help you Sagara?"
"Chidori have her taken out of her remedial classes this weekend. She is taking them because of my mistake."
"I will take care of that now may I help you?" Hayashimizu saw the despair in Sousuke's eyes. He and Sousuke had a strange relationship definitely. He worried seeing his good perhaps best friend like this. "No on can. It's not a problem." Sousuke turned to leave.
"Sousuke!" Hayashimizu's raised voice and the fact he called Sousuke by his first name surprised the ex-sergeant. He slowly turned to face him.
"Yes your Excellency?" The look in his eyes had not changed.
"What is wrong? You know I am here to help."
"…"
"Sousuke what is going on with you?" He rose and walked over to him. Sousuke turned to stare him straight in the face.
"Well, is there anything I can do to help at least explain to me the problem."
"Negative. It is something I must do. The consequences are no one else's but mine."
"Sousuke, why do you embrace such a life?" Sousuke turned and slid the door open. He looked back at Hayashimizu before exiting.
"Because if I do…then I know no one else will have to endure such things."
Sousuke walked out and closed the door. Hayashimizu stood there with his arm outstretched to the closed door. His glasses fell off his face and settled on the ground.
His footsteps could not be heard as he walked down the empty hallway. His expression unchanging as he walked. The bell went off and people started pouring into the hallway to get back to there classes. He walked like a shadow through the groups of students not disrupting anyone's path. He continued towards the exit of the school. He stopped right in front of the door that would take him outside. He stared at the handle to exit the building. He sighed before turning around.
"Where's Sousuke?" Kyouko poked Kaname's arm. She continued watching the door waiting for him to enter the room.
'Did something happen? He better not be skipping.' Just as her thought ended the door slid open. Sousuke appeared in the doorway.
"I'm late…" He kept his gaze averted from anyone as he took his seat. Kaname turned to face him as he sat. He reached into his bag and handed her the bento. She looked at it before taking it.
"It's full."
Sousuke said nothing as he stared at his desk. Kaname watched him for 10 seconds before turning to the front. She placed the bento in her bag and listened to the teacher. She was going to have a hard time concentrating. When the bell finally rang ending class everyone rose to leave Kaname quickly turned to Sousuke's seat. She looked sad when he was not there. She looked toward the door but he was already gone. The next class would be physical education and they had swimming today. She looked toward the door.
"What are you going to do…Sousuke?"
"Jeez Sousuke those are bad. Is that why you didn't want to change at the beach?" Shinji and Sousuke had just changed for swimming class. It was almost summer so the school decided it was best to get the students ready for anything that may happen in the water.
"They are part of the reason. The marks are not the problem. It is explaining them or memories that may come with them. It is not pleasant." Sousuke had people coming at him constantly with questions about his new scars. The horrible one's that previously only Kaname had seen. He did not care anymore. He walked out with the rest of the class towards the pools.
"Hey Sousuke I heard…oh" Ono-D walked up to the two. News of Sousuke's scars and stories on how he had gotten them had begun to spread to quickly. It seems the boys were quick to spread stories when it was something that interested them. He mentally noted the similarity between this and the female ability to do the same thing.
"Damn those are nasty. I heard you got into a fight with 50 guys when you got that one along your side. Also is it true you were tortured and that's how you got those two on your back?"
"Negative these storied were fabricated by others to explain them. I have not divulged any information on how I acquired these scars."
"Oh. Well you haven't said anything about what you did since you left."
"There is no reason to."
"You sure… you know it's good to talk to people sometimes."
"Your concern is unnecessary but noted."
"Ok bud I get it." Ono-D dropped the subject. Leonard walked up to them. He looked displeased seeing Sousuke scarred form. "Sagara shouldn't you do something about that. Cover up."
"Doing that the teacher would not let me participate in class." He ignored Leonard's smug look. They turned when the teacher arrived.
"Okay guys regular class. Let's go through the stretches and get going."
"You think Sousuke went to class. I don't see him." Kyouko stood with Kaname by the girls' pool.
"Hopefully. Maybe I'll go check. Remember he didn't…" Just then Shiori came up to them.
"Hey guys did you hear about Sousuke?"
Kaname's head snapped as it spun to face Shiori. "What about Sousuke?" She grabbed the girl by her shoulders.
"Ka-Kaname well it was umm…the boys started spreading rumors and some girls picked it up. Sousuke has all these scars all over him and things like torture and fighting 100 hundred guys at once and stuff is going around. Some of the girls have gone to see them. You know we think their ugly and stuff and aren't going to see them per say, but people want to know how he got them, being a hero and all. You may have competition with Sousuke."
Kaname smiled. "I have no competition …" Her face turned angry. "…But I'm going to find out what's going on." Kaname made her way over to the boys' pool. The boys cleared out as she approached. Kaname found Sousuke surrounded by a hoard of girls. Her face darkened as she approached.
Sousuke did not notice Kaname through the onslaught of girls. He was finding it difficult not to pull the gun from his shorts. He kept receiving questions about his scars, and the stories behind them. He told them that those were not true but he also wouldn't tell them the real story so they kept coming with questions. Suddenly he felt a chill run down his spine. He turned towards the sense of danger. Kaname was approaching her shoulders pulled back in anger her neck hanging forwards but her head held up.
"Ladies I do not it is believe to stay here anymore…" Sousuke tried to get rid of the girls. Kaname pushed pass the girls. Many of them moving away out of sheer fear.
"Sousuke." She did not hide her displeasure at all as she said his name.
"Yes Chidori."
"What's going on here?" The gym teacher for the boys walked up to the small gathering.
He took one look before judging the situation. "Sagara you may be popular now but you should not be wasting class time to flirt. You girls should go back to your class." The teacher shooed the girls away. All of them left except Kaname. Her glare had not softened at all.
"Uh…that was not the way the teacher comprehended it."
"I heard the rumors Sousuke. I thought you didn't want to show your scars."
"That was before. But only weak people would have such problems for these."
"I see. May I have a word with you."
"We are currently attending…"
"That's alright you two go. I could use some peace." The teacher excused them. Kaname grabbed Sousuke by his ear and hauled him off. She stopped when they were around of corner and effectively out of sight and hearing distance.
"What was that all about, I can't believe you let them swarm you like that."
"Chidori it was a difficult situation. I am carrying a limited amount of weapon currently because of my attire. Also when I removed my garments to don the proper swimming wear I was briefly questioned but gave no answers. The stories you are hearing are all being fabricated by many anonymous sources."
"I'm not talking about that Sousuke. I'm talking about the way those girls were all over you. You didn't even stop them when they tried to touch you. They did touch you."
"My actions would have been severe and dangerous."
"I'm sure you could have done something about it."
Sousuke looked serious. "Would you not have struck me if I had pulled a weapon and fired or maybe restrain one of the females. Perhaps a stun grenade." Kaname caught his hint. She also remembered an earlier conversation.
"Remember most of the time you deserve it. I've even let you slide on some recently."
"I see your point. Perhaps my course of action was not the best."
"No it wasn't. While we're here why don't you tell me why you didn't eat."
"I was taking care of some business. You no longer have to take classes this weekend."
"That's good but I doubt that took you all of lunch."
"I said I would explain later when we were in Florida."
"It is later."
Sousuke sighed. "I have many things I need to take care of that is all."
Kaname stepped forward. She tip-toed up to him staring him right in the eyes.
Sousuke arched slightly back. "Is there a problem?"
"Something is bothering you."
Sousuke was amazed that she figured it out. No one else had not that he showed the expression often.
"Negative nothing is wrong."
"Liar."
"You would make an effective interrogator Kaname."
She smiled because he used her first name even if it was by accident.
"Come on Sousuke."
He said nothing as he obediently followed her back to the class. She looked back watching him as they started. He had the look on his face similar to when she went to get him in Hong Kong. It was different now for some reason. Kaname turned and placed her hand out to stop him. He bumped into and stumbled back a bit. He looked at her with those same empty eyes. She looked at him seriously not blinking.
"What's wrong Sousuke? I think I've let you put things off long enough."
Sousuke looked back at her, studied her. Taking every detail of her. He listened carefully to the tone of her voice. He watched the way her muscles on her face moved. The way the little strands of her hair sticking out of her swim cap were swayed gently by the light breeze. The thickness of her eye lashes, the fullness of her lips. He looked at everything and regretted everything he had done all the same.
"Chidori I…" have to go. I cannot do this currently. I have other things I need to take care of. You should leave me alone. These were the thoughts that went through his head but he dare not speak them. He already made perhaps his worst mistake in Paris and he could not take it back no matter how much he wanted to. He already knew things would be worse with Leonard around. He expected Tessa to be bearable this time around. Even if Leonard was kind to Kaname he had no doubt the whispered young man would hold a vendetta against that was already plain on his face.
"You what?" She watched him her expression unchanging. Sousuke saw the strong fire that burned in her and knew she would not back down as she had gracefully been doing recently. He knew she would catch him in a lie or if he tried to change subject. Sousuke brought his arm up and caressed her cheek. His thumb gliding across her lips. Kaname was surprised by the sudden contact. His cool hand felt good against her warm cheek. Suddenly it was gone. Sousuke pulled back as if he had been burned. He clenched his hand at his side.
"I'm sorry. I should not have done that." He noticed her hurt expression. She smiled anyway. "Come on Sousuke let's go back to class." She turned and walked back on her own even though he didn't follow. The expression on his face was still cold and empty.
"Maybe I am an idiot." He started his way back to class.
Kyouko noticed Kaname returning. The girls were already taking turns at the pool.
"Something wrong Kana-chan?" Kaname smiled and stretched when she reached her.
"Nope absolutely nothing. Just the usual." The last part was hard to say because it had been this way with Sousuke recently. She had a feeling he regretted their relationship. It hurt her to think like that. She wanted to find out if it was true but as simple as it was did not want to ask him for fear of the answer.
The rest of the day was simple and except for a few more explosions compliments of Sousuke the day was fine. They did not even have the aftermath of Kaname scolding him. She merely told him to calm down and let him be. The bell for the end of school was about to ring.
"Don't forget everyone final exams next week. Hopefully Mr. Sagara will refrain from doing any damage then."
Sousuke continued to sit quietly as the teacher eyes him. He turned to watch Kaname. She sat quietly her mood he could tell was not as well as usual. The bell rang after about 5 more seconds. Everyone rose to leave for the day. Sousuke exited an waited for Kaname to come out. When she did he followed her down the hall.
"Something is wrong Chidori. Would you please inform as to what the problem is?"
Kaname kept quiet as they walked. Kyouko walked up next to her.
"Hey Kaname want to hang out tonight. I got the new Stallone movie."
"Wow really." Kaname had been waiting for the movie to come to Japan for a while now.
Kyouko nodded.
"Yep it even comes with deleted scenes and other special features."
"Alright let's head straight to my place then. You want to call your parents now or wait until we get there?"
"I'll do it now." They stopped outside the school while Kyouko made the call. There was an uncomfortable air between Sousuke and Kaname. He decided it'd be best not to ask her about it. Maybe it would make his decision easier.
"Hello Kaname may I speak to you now. I am here but I have chaperons. The sniper and woman who like to smoke are here on duty for me and my sister. Me more as guards to stop anything and for Teletha as bodyguards."
Kaname looked towards Kyouko. She was speaking with her mother about something.
"Sure we have a minute. Sousuke could you stay here."
"Ok." Sousuke watched the streets. It was a nice day over-all. Just a little too warm.
"Well what is it?" Kaname wondered why they had to walk so far away to talk.
"I told you before I want to apologize for my actions. As I told you before I love you. I should not have treated you that way. After our incident on the sub I realized some things. I wish for a chance to make it up to you. Here I got you this." Leonard pulled out a small case. When he opened it there was a gold necklace inside. It had three tiny ruby's hanging on decorations. "I was going to get sapphires but I figured something to contrast your color would look nice. I'm sorry for what I did. It's just that after what happened I felt different."
Kaname stared at the necklace. It was beautiful but something she doubted she would wear.
"It's lovely but I can't accept it."
Leonard looked hurt. "But why?"
"Well it really doesn't suit me and… I already have a boyfriend." Screw certain things.
Leonard actually looked bothered. "Sagara."
"Yeah but…" Kaname almost told him what she was thinking. Leonard was the last person to talk about for problems in her relationship. At least he was being kind, and sincere.
"I see. Well I will not give up. I have apologized I would still like to make it up to you. Hopefully there is a time when your watch dog will not be around or maybe you can ask him to stay."
Kaname glared at him but the thought of Sousuke as a dog made her feel like laughing. She giggled a bit then realized her mistake. She had just laughed at Sousuke's expense with Leonard. Even if it was because she thought of a cute thought it was wrong.
"Listen Leonard we'll talk later I want to take today to rest. I just got back yesterday."
"I may not come."
"Not today remember."
Leonard nodded and let Kaname go. Kyouko was talking to Sousuke as she returned. Leonard turned and walked back. He was not allowed to leave the city or travel a certain distance without supervision. They were not doing well at treating him as a prisoner not that he was one now. He walked away deciding to do who knows what.
Sousuke said nothing as they walked towards Kaname's house. Kyouko and Kaname chatted about various things. Kyouko had not watched the movie without Kaname so they could share the excitement.
"Hey Sousuke you want to watch too. It has a lot of action?" Kyouko looked to Sousuke. He looked distant as they walked. She could also feel a weird tension around her two friends.
"Ask Chidori. If you wish my company possibly if not I will complete other assignments."
"Well Kana should we bring Sousuke?"
"Let him decide." She looked up at him while they walked. "What do you want to do Sousuke?"
He frowned. He currently had no idea what he wanted to do.
"I do not have a preference right now. I believe I should let you two enjoy your time. I will head home. I have my phone if you need me."
"Oh." Kaname looked forward. The train ride and most of the way back was silent except for brief words between her and Kyouko. Their separations were with simple nods.
"Did something happen between you two?" Kyouko asked as they headed towards the elevator.
"I don't know. I can't tell or explain it. I still don't really understand him."
I doubt she even knows the real you. Gauron's words rang in her head. Ever since they had returned they had been acting on feelings. She felt right but if any of it was real or something else was hard to tell. She'd heard about people building dependence and relationship's when they go through a difficult situation together relying on each other to survive. This was different, this was multiple times and they went to school and going through hard times together was part of a real relationship but she was getting confused about Sousuke more and more. They had arguments and they said they loved each other but if any of it was true was starting to worry her. She wanted it to be. It had to be for her to step so far and do so many things after holding off. She wouldn't do that with just anyone. Right now she wanted to get her mind off it. A good Stallone movie would help.
Sousuke had given up calling Travis. He'd done it many times after he regained his memory but received no answer. He hoped he would be stupid and leave a trace for him to follow. They may be enemies but they once worked together and he knew things. Sousuke couldn't go back to the base either. He did not have the necessary equipment to defeat them. He could try to spy and gain information but he doubted that would work. He was a mess and he knew it. The mistakes he had been making up to now were amateur and he would have judged another as an idiot or unfit for the job for making so many mistakes. He had gotten used to the pain. His body was hurting again. He hadn't forgotten his condition. Even though he had undressed for gym he the marks signifying his impending doom were mostly invisible. He walked into his apartment. He had not been to this place very much. He was definitely out of it.
"Hey Sousuke!"
Sousuke pulled out his gun. He was relieved when he found it was Kurz but he scolded himself for not noticing the door had been touched or the lights were on or that someone was in here at all. He put down his gun.
"What's wrong with you buddy?"
"…"
"Girl trouble eh. Don't worry I'll help ya. For now we need a place to crash for the night. Tessa, Mao, Leonard, and I will be staying here tonight and maybe for awhile. If you want though we could move to another apartment. We expected you to be staying with Kaname now but the landlord said you still lived here so we took advantage of it."
"Where is Mao?"
"Picking up some beers, cigarettes some condoms for tonight if you know what I mean."
"I doubt it."
Kurz sat up from his rested position. "What's wrong with you? Did angel dump you or something?"
"Negative though that sounds like a good idea currently."
"Someone's got the blues. Don't worry when Sis gets back we'll drink and have some fun."
Sousuke reached for his gun when the door opened and closed.
"I'm back." He put it away when he heard it was Mao.
"Oh hey Sousuke. Why don't you help me with the groceries it is your fridge."
"Roger."
Sousuke walked silently into the kitchen. Melissa was hiding cans of crab in the back of the fridge.
"How you doing kid?" She shoved some more cans in there.
"There's no problems." Sousuke reached into the bag and grabbed some bread, ham, and other groceries putting them away accordingly.
"You sure you sound pretty down."
"I'm fine."
"Ok. We're going to have some barbecue for dinner is that alright?"
"It's not a problem."
"Good now tell me what's wrong."
"I will handle it."
"Are you sure?"
"Affirmative.
"Ok then." Melissa stood up and stretched her back. "Sp how's Kaname doing?"
Sousuke reached in for more groceries. "She seems to be alright. She is acting strangely though. Similar to a time before." Melissa looked towards him. "Really what happened before that made her act that way?" Sousuke put away a pack of beer. "Before or now."
"How about both first then. After tell me what happened now that is making her act that way." Sousuke tossed her a beer. "She is not getting angry or hitting me. She also seems to be avoiding me. Back then it was because she was going out with a young man form another school. Tokiwa lead me to where they were meeting."
"You were jealous."
"Negative I was unaware of what was happening until then. Afterwards I saved her form some bandits and for some reason she turned down the young man's feelings. I do not completely understand why. Perhaps it was because he was not efficient in combat."
"Uh-huh. Right Sousuke."
"I do not understand what you mean by that."
"She liked you back then. When she saw you help her she realized she didn't want the other guy."
"Uh… I do not believe…"
"Don't be stupid you know it's true." Mao finished off her beer and lit a cigarette. Sousuke looked away. "Understood. She is acting similar today ever since I…"
"Well?"
"It is not something I should talk about. Thank you for the advice however I should take care for this on my own." Melissa leaned towards him.
"Something juicy huh?"
"Negative we were dry at the time."
"Oh so it got hot afterwards."
"Uh." Melissa broke out in laughter. Kurz walked in laughing. "Jeez buddy you're a hoot."
Sousuke turned red then exited the kitchen. "I must be going."
"Hey come one we were just playing." Kurz called to him. Sousuke turned his head to look back.
"Understood I merely have things to take care of."
"Ok. Don't come home to late." Kurz waved as Sousuke closed the door. He walked back into the room.
"You think he'll be alright?" Melissa asked as she took another drink of her second beer.
"Yeah. I mean he survived that thing didn't he."
"Yeah but we got that message afterwards. He's been through a lot of shit Kurz, and I think he's still going through it by himself. You see that look in his eyes. I saw him like that before when we were in Hong Kong and he almost crashed the damn car."
"He'll be fine." Kurz tossed a candy in his mouth and took another drink of his beer.
"Tessa and Leonard should be back soon." Melissa said as she exited the kitchen. Kurz followed after her.
"Let's hope they aren't doing anything wrong. Hey did you get the condoms?"
"What condoms?" Melissa turned on the TV.
"The ones for tonight you don't want to get pregnant do you. Unless you want little Kurz and Melissa's."
He fell back when a can collided with his face. "Bring that thing near me and it'll be wrapped up in a bag and given to you in four pieces. If you want I can even put them in condoms."
"Sis your so dirty. I see you like it kinky." Continued shouting and banging could be heard coming form the apartment. Someone swore they heard gunshots.
