Talking aloud to self
Phil Collins Singing
As our story begins, we see a small baby girl being held by a woman. Her name is Alice Clayton. Walking beside the two is a man. He's John Clayton, Alice's husband, and the young baby's father. John carries the suitcases for their first family vacation. In front of the young couple rests a cruise ship. The ship will be leaving from Britain and traveling down the Atlantic Ocean. Together the couple walk up the ramp to board the ship, excited for the trip ahead of them. Once on deck John scans for the captain, Henry. He sees the captain standing off to the side giving orders to a few crew members.
John: Henry!
Henry turns to see who called out to him. His gaze lands on his old friend. He waves off the crew he was talking to before walking over to John. Henry calls out happy to see John.
Henry: John!
John sets down the suitcase in his right hand. Henry extends his hand to shake John's now empty right hand. Alice stands close by John holding their daughter with a smile on her face.
Henry: Glad to see you could make it John!
John: It's good to see you as well Henry.
Henry releases John's hand before turning to Alice and kissing both of her cheeks in greeting. He pulls away and speaks up.
Henry: Alice! As beautiful as always. John's not causing you too much trouble, is he? (Henry jokes.)
Alice laughs at Henry's antics.
Alice: Of course not! (Alice playfully slaps Henry on the shoulder.) But I may have to have a talk with your wife. Does Sarah know of the pies that have gone missing from my windowsill? The same pies that I see you munching on when you pass by our house? (Alice looks to Henry knowingly.)
Henry lets out a boisterous guffaw.
Henry: Still has that fire in her I see. (He winks to John.) Just like when you two first met. But I must give my compliments to the chef. I can't help but snatch one when you bake. Now where's my Goddaughter? (Henry calls playfully scanning for the baby before leaning closer to Alice and smiling at the baby in her arms.) There she is! (Joan giggles up at her Godfather before cooing. Alice proceeds to hand her over to Henry.) Little one not causing too much trouble is she?
John places his right arm lovingly around his wife's waist allowing her to cuddle into his side. The two parents look at their daughter enrapture by her presence.
John: Alice and I have had our hands full since Joan came but we've never been happier.
Alice: She's the light of our lives.
Henry: Children will do that to you. Take it from me, I have three.
Alice: How you and Sarah managed to have twins the first time is beyond me. I had trouble with one.
Henry: Believe me, Sarah was not happy with me about that, but we love them all the same. Wait until you have your second.
John: That'll be a bit before then, but we've discussed it.
A voice calls out interrupting the conversation.
Crew member: Captain!
Henry looks back and sees that he is needed.
Henry: It looks like I'll have to be off now. (He passes Joan back to Alice.) It was good catching up with you. I hope you enjoy the trip. (Henry leans down and kisses Joan on the forehead.) Bye Angel. Be good for the ol' mum and da will ya? (Joan coos up at Henry.) Farewell for now John, Alice.
Henry goes off to continue his captainly duties. John picks up the suitcase he set down and leads his wife and daughter to their cabin on the ship. The small family settles into their 'temporary' home for the next month.
A week later the family is sound asleep in their cabin. All of a sudden the quiet night is interrupted by the cries of a baby. Waking up drowsily, John goes to sit up and calm his daughter but smells something off. His eyes fly open now wide awake at the realization. John shakes his still sleeping wife awake.
John: Alice! Wake up! Fire!
Alice jolts up and looks to their daughter who is still crying. The two get up from bed quick to grab their daughter and escape. Alice picks up Joan who silences now that she is in her mother's embrace. John breaks down the door to their room. As the door flies open smoke fills the room. John grabs his wife's hand to guide his family to safety. When they make it on deck they see the now darkened sky from the unexpected storm that rolled in causing the accident that has set the entire ship on fire. John scans the deck before his eyes land on a boat. He tells Alice his plan.
John: Alice, take Joan and get to a lifeboat! I'll lower you to the water.
Alice: But John...
John stops her by placing both of his hands on Alice's face so that they are face to face.
John: I'll be fine dear. Just keep our baby safe.
Alice sees all the love and determination on her husband's face. She nods in understanding.
Alice: I love you John.
John: And I you, my love.
John kisses his wife on the lips, before peaking his daughter on her forehead. Alice races over to the boat hugging Joan protectively to her chest while John makes his way through the fire to the rope holding the boat. John starts letting the boat down gently. John continues to pull the boat down to the water until the rope's wince snaps and hits him, causing the boat to fall into the water. The lifeboat falls to the ocean, bobbing beside the aflame ship. Alice looks up, concerned, hoping John is alright. Luckily, the man jumps off the burning ship and into the trembling water. He comes up and gasping for breath as he swims towards his wife and child. Alice smiles as she helps her husband into the boat. As they grin and hug, happy to be alright, Phil Collins voice sings in the background.
Put your faith in what you most believe in. Two worlds, one family. Trust your heart, let fate decide. To guide these lives we see.
The couple look down at their daughter. John takes his hand and weaves it through the small tuft of brown hair she has on her head. The baby girl coos up at her parents. The two dot on their daughter before thunder is heard and lightning flashes in the clouds. It startles the couple from their revelry. The parents see land nearby, while their ship sinks into the ocean, never to be seen again. Their boat drifting with the current closer to the island.
A paradise untouched by man, within this world's blessed with love. A simple life, they live in peace.
On the same island, a group of gorillas are relaxing. One of them is a silver-back gorilla named Kerchak with his mate Kala. The two gorillas grin as they look at their young gorilla baby, who's playing in Kala's lap with Kerchak's finger. A chameleon walks on a branch nearby causing the baby to climb on Kerchak to grab it. Reaching for it, he falls off, but Kerchak catches his son handing him over to Kala. The baby chuckles, before cuddling with Kala.
Softly tread the sand below your feet now. Two worlds, one family. Trust your heart, let fate decide. To guide these lives we see.
In the morning, Alice, and John walk on the sands of the island with Joan securely in Alice's arms. Parts from their ship scatter the beachfront. They leave behind the lifeboat making their way inland to look around. They know they are going to be stranded here for some time, perhaps longer. When they break through into a clearing, Joan coos as she points at something. John and Alice look and see that the girl is pointing at a big tree. John grins, seeing that the tree is suitable to be made as their new living quarters. He ruffles his daughter's hair a little and grins. His daughter giggles from the action.
Underneath the shelter of the trees, only love can enter here. A simple life, they live in peace.
Now we see Kerchak smile lovingly at his baby as they play together. The baby playfully beats his chest as he runs at his father. Kerchak goes to grab him but the baby ducks under him. He turns and scoops his son up onto his back. The baby runs around on his back evading Kerchak's reach. The baby then jumps off, and he runs towards Kala, who hugs him warmly. She can tell her son will be with them for a long time. Too bad she doesn't know how wrong she is. She then throws her baby in the air to catch him.
Raise your head up, lift high the load. Take strength from these that need you. Build high the walls, build strong the beams. A new life is waiting, but danger's no stranger here.
At the same time, the human couple's baby girl is seen being thrown into the air and caught by Alice. Joan nestles close to her mother's neck in contentment. Later Alice and John begin carrying wood from the shipwreck to the tree, their daughter in a homemade kanga baby wrap on Alice's back. They make several trips back to the beach to retrieve things from the shipwreck. After some time they've manage to build the base platform for the treehouse. John pulls the same boat they escaped in up to the platform. The boat holds many items to help build the treehouse. When John goes to start moving wood for the walls of the treehouse, he struggles with lifting a beam. Seeing this Alice goes to help him. He looks to her and sees that she's staring back at him in a "we're in this together" manner. Together the two move the beam to the treehouse. By now the frame of the treehouse is nearly complete as the two work together to lift a window into place. John saws a board to the height he needs before putting it up against the frame as a wall. Alice is then seen on top of the treehouse placing a hay roof. A few hours later, the tree-house is completed before the sun sets. The couple stands back and admires their hard work. They grin, thinking they have a great house to live in for years to come with their daughter. What they don't know is that a yellow leopard is lurking in the shadows, growling.
As night falls, Kerchak, Kala and their baby are asleep. Just then, the baby awakens and grins as he sees a frog. Deciding now is the time to play, he chases after it. What he doesn't know is that he is being chased too. Nearby is a female creature. It's Sabor, an evil leopard who has hunted creatures as long as she lives. The evil leopard growls as she stalks the unsuspecting baby. The baby continues chasing the frog, while Sabor chases him, the latter going faster meeting the baby. The baby gasps as Sabor jumps at him with a roar. The baby shrieks and he runs off trying to loss the predator.
Kerchak and Kala awaken upon hearing their son's shrieks and Sabor's roaring. In fear, they run to save him while the baby continues to attempt to escape. The baby gorilla runs into some bushes, hoping he has lost her. But Sabor jumps into the bushes with a fierce growl. Kerchak and Kala run towards the bushes, but Sabor caught up to the baby first. Kerchak stops and gasps as he sees a horrible sight, forcing him to stop Kala. The two gorillas realize what just happened; Kala weeps on her mate's shoulder, as she realizes that her only baby is being killed by Sabor.
No words describe a mother's tears; no words can heal a broken heart. A dream is gone, but where there's hope.
The next day, Kerchak begins to lead his clan away. Everyone is saddened at the loss of Kerchak and Kala's son. At the head of the clan Kerchak glances behind him looking at the back where Kala is. He has a worried look seeing that Kala is several paces behind the group. Kala is heartbroken and distraught over her son's death. Just before she catches up with the others leaving, Kala stops as she hears some crying. Her maternal instinct activating, she runs off from her clan. She runs by a waterfall where a muster of different storks are as she follows the direction the crying is coming from. She keeps running through the jungle, passed a troop of baboons. Kala pauses a moment listening for the cry. She hears it again running after it until she stops before a wooden suspension bridge. Looking where the bridge leads she sees something that surprises her, a house in a tree. It looks like it was built recently. The crying seems to be coming from inside the house.
