Ororo looked like she wanted to ask more questions about this strange, if not funny development, but settled with nodding to him and giving him a look that said they would definitely be talking about it later.

"Alright, let's get you two changed, then I'll take you down to get some food." Said Ororo, right before she shooed the others out, so that she could help the two newest members of the school feel more comfortable with their new surroundings.

Though she did not promise she would forget the surprise of Logan, Mr Isolated Lone Wolf – or Wolverine – having grandkids that, apparently, even he didn't even know about.

Chapter 3: The Best of Us

Once they were dressed in some brand-new, but also comfortable clothes – Laura was wearing white shoes with blue jeans and a white shirt under a woolly grey jumper. Harry, on the other hand, was wearing blue shoes with blue jeans and a blue shirt under a woolly red jumper – Harry and Laura followed Ororo down the hallway, both of them taking note of the fact that the building they were in, wherever it was, it was clearly a big one.

It also looked very expensive as well, mostly because of the olden-days feel, mixed with the signs of modern life, such as TVs, computers, electrical devices and a feeling of light and life. While Laura seemed in awe of the surroundings, however, Harry seemed to be on high alert, both with the old building and their dark-skinned chaperone.

"How do you like your new clothes?" Ororo asked as she led them along the main hallway.

"It feels weird…but it's nice, Miss Munroe," Laura said with a small smile, emphasising this point as she rubbed her hands against the soft material.

"Why are you all being so nice to us?" asked Harry suspiciously, seemingly choosing to keep his hands at his sides, almost as though even new clothes were just par for the course with him.

Instead, his scepticism and his sense of alertness – constant vigilance, as someone else might have said – guided his choice of words as he looked to a stunned, if not saddened Ororo as he asked her, "What do you all want?"

"I'm sorry? What makes you think we want something from you, child?" asked Ororo, a frown now marring her features as she looked at Harry, who was looking at through narrowed emerald eyes.

"Everyone wants something," scoffed Harry, showing an air of annoyance, as though he thought she was being ridiculous for asking.

Ororo, however, pretended not to notice.

Thanks to her time in the school, she'd come to pride herself on being able to correctly see the true nature of people – an irony, she often thought, given her power worked with the forces of nature – but, as she looked at Harry she noticed several things.

First and foremost, both to her worry and slight dismay, Ororo noticed Harry's hand twitched constantly, as if, much like a certain someone's early days here, he was ready, willing and able to bring his claws out at any moment. The way his eyes seemed to flick towards Laura, as though he was actually being forced to reassure himself that she was still there, also put Ororo on edge, while it also made her heart ache with a feeling of pain she was not accustomed to feeling, least of all towards two souls as young as the twins.

As she looked at Harry, Ororo noticed how, the more she looked at him, many words came into her head.

Protective.

Hardened.

Wary.

Distrusting.

Scared – but unwilling to show it, least of all around his twin or strangers.

Truth be told, noticing these feelings and expressions on the boy's face tore at her heart; to see one so young be so jaded, Ororo could only shiver with dread at the thought of what these poor youths must have gone through with Stryker, if not sooner. Fortunately, she also noticed how the sister, Laura, while as alert as her sibling, she, at least, hadn't appeared to have reached the same level of distrust for people as the brother, but Ororo could only assume that this was because the brother had been the one to step into a protective role.

As she looked at him, Ororo could only think about some of the tales that Charles had told her about a certain master of magnetism when he'd first met him, the two of them as allies back then, only to become enemies later and, now…what were they?

A combination of both?

Frenemies?

Whatever the answer, Ororo hoped she could try and break through to the young boy, letting him see that he could feel safe and trusting here, before he became something akin to Erik, if not worse.

"Do you know what this place is?" She asked in a soft voice, trying a different angle to break the ice with the cold-steel-souled youth.

"A place for freaks," said Harry, though his fingers, as well as Laura's eyes, twitched when he said the last word.

"Mutants!" insisted Ororo, taking a note about their reactions while she also remained steadfast and strong. "Not freaks."

"Same thing." Harry replied with a dismissive shrug.

"And who told you that?"

"Our aunt," answered Laura, though when she did, Ororo saw a flash of warning, if not danger, filling Harry's eyes as Laura explained, "She said that mutants are like us: freaks like them."

"You mean to tell me that your own aunt…your family…they called you freaks?" Ororo's frown became even more pronounced, though she couldn't keep the air of horror or rage out of her voice.

Outside a nearby window, the skies suddenly darkened ominously, though neither twin seemed to notice this.

"Yeah, we're freaks! You got a problem with that?" asked Harry in a challenging voice, earning another nervous look from Ororo as she saw three metal tips peeking through the flesh of his knuckles.

"Harry, be nice." Whispered Laura, taking her brother's hand, where she rubbed her thumb over the peeking tips of his claws.

"It's fine, Laura," said Ororo, offering what she hoped was a reassuring smile before looking at Harry with a stern, but also sympathetic look in her eyes. "And, to answer your question, Harry: no, I do not have a problem with mutants! As for claiming that you, like us, are in any way, any sort of freaks: I assure you, here and now, child. You…neither of you, are freaks, no matter what your…aunt called you."

The venom in her voice as she named the relative for who they were was not lost on Harry, who raised an eyebrow curiously, while Ororo went on in a cool, if not strained tone, "Every person who is currently living in this building has felt like a freak, an outcast, an exile and an abomination at least once in their life. We've all felt unwanted and unloved, even by our own kin. Indeed, many of us, your…your grandfather included, we have all been hurt by others. To use another example, I am sure that you both remember what Hank looks like?"

When the twins nodded in unison, Ororo quickly continued, "Because of his looks, he cannot walk out in the street without being judged by those whose minds, hearts and souls have been closed off by hatred and prejudice. Similarly, the Professor once told me of a young mutant whom he met who cannot even touch another living person; they are currently in the care of a mutual acquaintance of ours, but, sadly, their seclusion and exile from normal, social interactions has left them…shall we say…a little fearful of new faces."

While Laura seemed to take this news with a pinch of salt, Harry rolled his eyes, earning a sigh of barely-restrained annoyance from Ororo as she stopped, just shy of the canteen, before turning to Harry and Laura, kneeling down to their level as she continued, "Given all that you have had to endure, I understand why you don't trust any of us, but I can only hope that you are willing to give us a chance. In the meantime, let's get you both something to eat."

"Don't we have to do chores first?" Harry asked with a frown.

If he looked at Ororo then he would have seen her eyes closed and if he was a mind reader then he would be aware of her plans to find Harry's aunt and set Logan, if not Creed, on them, if not fry them with several of the world's most-powerful lightning bolts.

Hmm, maybe both…

Oh, Gods: the temptation…

WsCs

"Did you like it?" Ororo asked once the two were done eating.

The two children nodded but they didn't say anything. "Well, let's go and take you both to your room."

"Our room?" Laura asked, while Harry raised an eyebrow.

"Yes, you'll both be sharing a room, as many of the other kids all share a room as well. Considering you are brother and sister, I don't think there will be any problems with you two sharing…unless there is some reason why you can't share?"

"No," Harry shook his head quickly, earning a flash of a worried look from his sister. "We'll both share."

"Good, in that case, please follow me," said Ororo as she stood up before walking away.

Following her example, Harry and Laura quickly stood up and followed her, ignoring many curious, if not wary stares from the other students present, many of whom soon averted their eyes when Harry locked his gaze on them.

Fortunately for the curious-minded, Laura's hand never left her brother's all the way to their room.

WsCs

"And this one is yours, young ones," said Ororo, as they stopped outside a door, which she opened and gestured the two children inside.

Taking her cue, Harry and Laura walked inside, where both of them, even Harry, looked surprised as they looked around the room.

It was a fairly big room, much bigger than anywhere the two had ever slept in. It had one bed on each side of the room along with two desks and chairs plus a big window opposite the door. The walls were currently bare and magnolia in colour, while the curtains were a cloudy shade of grey, with a comfortable-looking cushioned sill that ran along the large window, allowing the twins to sit there comfortably and look out at the view of the grounds, if they should feel compelled to do so.

"Is the room all right?" asked Ororo, trying to weigh the children's reactions against their alertness and lack of trust with regards to their new home, "I understand that it's a bit plain, but, if you want to feel more at home here, I'm sure the Professor won't mind if you redecorate later."

"A…are you sure that this is for us?" Laura asked, finally breaking the tense silence.

"What do you mean?" asked Ororo.

"Well...it's just...it's really…"

"Big," said Harry quickly, finishing his sister's statement before she could say anything more.

"Yes, well…that's because, obviously, it's for the two of you," Ororo said, indicating both beds for emphasis as she looked at the room.

All right, so it was a decently sized room but hardly anything unbelievably impressive.

"Really?" Laura asked with disbelief. "This is all for us?"

"Yes, it is." Said Ororo, a kind smile on her face that was masterfully hiding her inner thoughts.

Ororo was a pretty smart woman and, even with Harry cutting Laura off before she'd had a chance to finish her thought, it didn't take a genius, much less a telepathic one, to work out that these kids had less than horrible lives and that it was the fault of the adults in charge of them.

'Hmm, maybe lightning is too quick.' Thought Ororo, trying to rein in her dark thoughts as, this time, she noticed the clouds gathering outside, but it was getting a bit too hard, especially given what the two had gone through, despite their young ages.

'I'll have to think of something else.'

She also knew that she was going to have to have more than a few words with a certain someone.

WsCs

"Explain."

Before she'd even sat down, this was the first word to come out of Ororo's mouth once she entered Professor Xavier's office.

To her curiosity, Hank was no longer here, but Professor Xavier was and so was Logan, and as soon as Ororo practically stormed into the office, he was instantly on alert. As usual, he'd opted to stand instead of sit down, which was fortunate as his tensing up expression, as well as his curious, if not cautious gaze snapped straight to Ororo as she walked towards the desk, stopping right next to Logan, where she crossed her arms and looked back and forth between the two men.

"If you are referring to the children and wish to know a bit more…it is a bit of a long story." Professor Xavier sighed, though the look that Ororo gave him let him know that that was probably not the best answer to give.

Much like the metallic-clawed mutant – as well as his frenemy, Erik Lehnsherr, aka Magneto, and a few young mutants who'd opted to stay with him in his sanctuary on the island of Genosha – Charles had known Ororo for quite some time, and he was able to tell when she was angry or not, even without the encroaching tempest threatening to spoil what had, originally, been forecasted as a lovely sunny day.

Right now, she was showing some very clear signs of anger on her face and in her stance: her eyes were narrow and her right foot was tapping impatiently while her arms were crossed so tight that he honestly feared she might end up hurting herself as she growled like thunder, "I have plenty of time, Charles."

"What's wrong? Is there a problem with the kids?" asked Logan worriedly.

"Yes! There is!" insisted Ororo, her eyes actually sparking up with lightning as she glared icy daggers at her friend and mentor.

"Well, like I said, it's a long story, Ororo, and not one I can tell you if you choose to electrocute both Logan and I, so, please, for now, please rein in your maelstrom," advised Xavier, earning a scowl from Ororo, but, knowing he was right – at least about electrocuting Logan, he was – she took a moment to take several deep, calming breaths.

This also helped restore the weather to its rightful state, prompting Xavier to officially begin his explanations as she had borderline-demanded of him, "As you know, Logan had been infiltrating a facility that was believed to be a former Weapon-X base."

Ororo nodded to show her understanding: Weapon-X was a code name for a secret US Government project that had intended to deliberately induce superpowers for military purposes. Coincidentally, it had also been Weapon-X that was responsible for bonding Logan's skeleton with adamantium, and one of its team leaders had been the now-late Colonel William Stryker.

Charles, meanwhile, kept up with his story as he explained, "While there, Logan had come across Stryker, who attempted to tire out Logan before sending in his big gun, which, in this case, happened to be Mr Creed."

"When I was there, I saw two kids in tanks," Logan growled, keeping his arms folded as he explained more to Ororo, who now looked to him with a mixture of curiosity and understanding. "Truth be told, Storm, when I saw him, I thought me and Sabretooth were going to go at it, but, suddenly, he changed his mind and, instead, he turned around and killed Stryker."

"What? Why?" Ororo asked in a confused voice.

"Weirdly, it seems that Sabretooth has his limit and, from what he said as he mauled Stryker like the put-down-dog he was, hurting kids is where he reaches his." Logan answered in a calm voice, even though he was still very much in disbelief over the situation.

"At the same time, in a fortunate, if not coincidental twist of fate, we think the children may have formed some sort of bond with him," Professor Xavier added, drawing Ororo's gaze back to him. "It was his words that calmed the children down and convinced them to listen to us. In fact, they both seemed rather upset when they were told that he was leaving."

"Although, the boy hid it better than the girl." Added Logan.

"Indeed," Professor Xavier nodded. "It was therefore agreed that Mr Creed would visit when he could, so long as he doesn't cause trouble. Then you arrived, now I believe that it is your turn to tell us both what you know."

Ororo didn't bother holding back. "It is my belief that these children were abused!"

"I'm not surprised," Logan snarled, though not before he winced, indicating he'd just spiked himself with his own claws in anger, though neither Xavier nor Ororo were worried, given his healing factor. "Stryker always was an asshole, so, of course the psychopathic little bastard would hurt kids! I swear, Chuck, if he wasn't already dead then I would..."

"No," Ororo cut him off, shaking her head as she did so, earning a curious look from Logan before she added, "I mean, I don't doubt that Stryker had likely hurt them in some way or form, but, when I speak of abuse, Logan, I…I can't believe I'm going to say the words, but…but I am speaking of abuse that came from their own family!"

"What do you mean?" asked Professor Xavier worriedly.

"I told Harry this was a place for mutants, but when I told him that, he responded by saying it was a place for freaks!" insisted Ororo, her words edged by the ire she'd felt when the boy in question had said thus. "I told him mutants weren't freaks and Laura then told me that it was their aunt who has told them that mutants are freaks and that they are both freaks. Indeed, Harry also said that it was the same thing."

Again, Logan growled and winced as he accidentally spiked himself in rage, prompting him to lower his folded arms, if only to ensure it didn't happen again, while Ororo went on. "I've also noticed a number of concerning things about both of them, Charles. I believe that the boy, Harry, has taken on a strong, protective role in their two-man group. When I questioned them about the clothes I gave them, Laura seemed genuinely happy, but Harry was suspicious: he even asked what we wanted in return."

"For the clothes?" asked Logan, earning a sad nod from Ororo.

"According to him, everybody wants something. When it was time for food, Harry then asked me if they were both supposed to do chores first. Then the two seemed to be incredibly in disbelief when I showed them the room that they would both be staying in."

"Disbelief over what?" Logan asked, not sure if he wanted to hear the answer.

"Over how big it was, and, I admit, it's a decently sized room but nothing massive." Ororo answered, sharing the disbelief felt by the two men as she explained, "These may seem to be little things, at least for now, but they add up. Not to mention the trust issues with Harry and the fact that those two somehow ended up in Stryker's hands. It's possible Stryker could have taken away the children from their guardians, but, from what I've seen and heard, and, again, I don't want to think about it, but it's also possible that the guardians didn't care enough to fight for them."

"You mean they let Stryker take the kids?" Logan snarled, looking very much like an angry animal, or at least more so than usual.

"I'm not sure, but I believe so…maybe even…" began Ororo, though not before she used the wind to summon a spare chair, so she could fall into it, clutching her head in her hands, unable to finish her thought because it was too painful to consider.

Fortunately, Logan seemed to follow her train of thought; despite the rage he felt, he managed to move to his comrade's side where he gently patted her on the shoulder, before he looked to Charles, his eyes almost like a wolf cornered by his enemies as he growled, "Well? What exactly is your plan for dealing with this, Chuck?"

"Hmm, we will naturally be here to support the children," said Professor Xavier, earning a scoff from Logan, who felt that the words no shit, Sherlock, couldn't have been any more appropriate at that moment, but he kept his peace as he continued consoling Ororo while the two of them listened to Charles' sagely advice and suggestions. "For now, we will work with them. Of course, physically-speaking, I don't suspect there will be much, if any permanent damage at all, due to the fact they both seem to possess Logan's healing factor. That being said, it is entirely possible that they both have almost-irreparable emotional and mental damage."

"And what about their guardians?" Logan growled impatiently, his ire restrained by the care for his newly-rediscovered cubs, while, at the same time, he was also more-concerned for his friend, Ororo's, mindset.

Oh, make no mistake: he was all for helping the kids recover from everything that the sickos had done to them – and Hell help any of them if he found that the abuse went further than that, especially with Laura – but he was also a man of action and, as Ororo seemed to be thinking, if only to herself, so too did Logan agree that somebody needed to pay for hurting his grandchildren.

He didn't give a damn if he only recently found out about them.

One way, or another, Logan vowed: somebody is going to pay for this.

"Calm down Logan! I assure you that they will be dealt with appropriately." Professor Xavier replied, earning an accusing, but also dangerous glare from Wolverine as he suspected Chuck had actually just read his mind and learned of Logan's intentions. "I will contact some friends of ours and have them look into the problem: in the meantime, the children need you more."

"He…he's right, Logan," Ororo said, snapping Logan out of his wild, vengeful thoughts, which, admittedly, involved quite a lot of stabbing, blood and screaming, but, somehow, Ororo managed to pierce the veil, wade through the sea of red and get through to Logan as she clasped his hand while it rested on her shoulder, before she continued, "I…I understand that you are angry…"

"I am not angry!" growled Logan, all-but-shouting as he roared like a man-beast. "I am pissed off!"

"And so am I," Ororo calmly replied, patting his hand as he had done her shoulder as she argued, "That being said, revenge, justice or whatever you want to call it, it will have to be temporarily put on hold."

"Now, don't give me that look," She said when Logan looked like he was about to argue. "If something is not done to bring these…people to justice, then I will personally track them down myself and rip their world asunder with the wildest, largest, most-destructive tsunami, tornado or hurricane that I can bring out…and no, Charles, I will not reconsider!"

This time, Xavier snapped his jaws shut as Ororo fixed him with a cold glare that was emphasised by a chill, which blew through his office, while Ororo returned her attention to Logan as she told him, "But for now, your priority…our main priority at this moment in time needs to be Harry and Laura. Right now, they do not trust people in general, so I think it's time to show them that not all of us are bad. I don't know about either of you, but I am not going to have these children grow up in a world where a man like Sabretooth is their role model."

Admittedly, Logan thought about arguing: truth be told, he really wanted to be the one doing all of the ripping and punishing of mutant-hating humans, especially those who, from the sounds of it, were either related to him, if not the cubs' parents in some way.

But, despite that vicious train of thought, he found himself thinking about Ororo's words.

She was right to say that he'd just found out that he had grandkids, though he didn't know from whose side – not yet anyway.

Therefore, the last thing he needed to do right now was follow those real freaks' trains of thought and consider leaving them here, dumping them on somebody else, just so he can go off and start ripping the mongrels to pieces.

Besides, if these friends that Professor Xavier mentioned were who Logan thought they were, then he didn't really need to worry about whichever idiots fucked everything up.

Not when there were the likes of a protective, if somewhat Boy-Scoutish Man in Red-White-And-Blue, a guy who had the best lawyers in the entire world on speed dial, a couple of master assassins, as well as another Thunder-and-Lightning Thrower and, of course, the Not-So-Jolly-Green-Giant associated with these friends of Chuck's – the latter of whom had even gone toe-to-toe with Wolverine himself and barely managed to get away without a scratch on more than a few occasions.

So, loathed as he was to say it right now, Logan admitted it, "You're right."

"Naturally," Ororo said with a small smile, again patting his hand reassuringly. "These kids need you Logan: for all your faults, you've always done what you thought was best, so tell me, old friend. What do you think will be the best thing you can do for Harry and Laura?"

Logan grunted before he turned and began walking away. "You ever get tired of being right all the time?"

"Not yet." Ororo called just before Logan left the office, her smile never fading even after he left.

"Ororo," said Professor Xavier suddenly, drawing Ororo's attention back to him, her smile wavering as she looked back to Charles. "What do you believe is the impression that the children have of you?"

"Honestly? I believe Laura is warming up to me, but Harry is not quite there. I think he believes this is all a trick of some sort and that we have bad intentions towards himself and his sister."

"Well then, we shall have to prove him wrong." Professor Xavier replied, earning a frown from Ororo as she wondered how he was planning to do just that. "Hank and I are interested in performing some tests on Harry in order to help determine if he has a mutant ability other than that which he shares with his sister and grandfather. Unfortunately, I don't think that he would be amenable to the idea."

"After what happened to him with Stryker? No, Charles, I imagine not." Ororo agreed, though the sarcasm lacing her words was unmistakable.

"Yes, well…I would like it if you, Logan, Hank and I work with the boy to discover if he has another ability."

"Why do you think he has another ability?" Ororo asked, trying not to lose her temper again as she wondered where Charles was going with this.

"Hank performed X-Rays on the boy," Professor Xavier responded, wheeling his chair around the desk as he explained, "The first X-Ray detected metal in his arm, but the second time he performed the test, he discovered that there was no metal. When we saw Harry and Laura's claws for ourselves, we noticed that young Laura still had bone claws while Harry's claws were metal, much like Logan's."

"Hmm," Ororo hummed, silently agreeing with that observation, though she also vowed, if only to herself, that she wouldn't let Charles turn Harry into just another science experiment that he could decide was able to stay or had to leave.

He was a kid, for God's sake, not a piece of meat, or a guinea pig in some lab – well, not anymore, anyway – so Ororo kept her thoughts fixed on that fact as she suggested, "Well…perhaps he can cover his bones in metal?"

"Perhaps," Professor Xavier nodded, though whether or not he was aware of Ororo's thoughts, he didn't say or show it on his face. "But we are not sure: things can often be simpler or more complicated than they look. And, even if we were, we don't know what form of metal, as, just from sight alone, I can say that it is not adamantium. Therefore, we do not know what properties it has, or even if he can cover all of his skeleton or just his claws. We also don't know if there are any negative side effects that could come from it, which is why I'd like you to help Logan."

"Help him?"

"Logan is..." Professor Xavier paused as he thought on his next words. "…not the most emotionally-adjusted of men, and that could prove to be detrimental when dealing with Harry and Laura's growth and development. Therefore, in light of what I have seen between the two of you this morning, I'd appreciate it if you can help the three of them out when possible. Not just help the kids with their powers, but also help the family bond. I believe they will trust you more easily than they will trust me."

Ororo didn't say it aloud, but, like Logan, she found herself thinking that the words no shit, Sherlock couldn't have been any more appropriate here, especially with what Charles was saying about testing Harry's metal and his powers.

"You don't have to ask," replied Ororo, again trying to mask her feelings behind her thoughts for her charges as she explained, "Whatever it takes, I am helping that family be a family, and I think we can both agree that this starts with helping that boy realise he can be a boy."

"You always were the best of us, Ororo." Professor Xavier smiled.

Once away from Charles, however, Ororo felt her hand move to her heart while her cheeks reddened as something Charles said rose to the forefront of her mind.

Therefore, in light of what I have seen between the two of you this morning, I'd appreciate it if you can help the three of them out when possible. Not just help the kids with their powers, but also help the family bond. I believe they will trust you more easily than they will trust me.

What he had seen between her and Logan.

All right, so Ororo admitted that it was pretty cute how gentle and even open Logan was with the kids, and, sure, in a way, she was seeing double, more or less, in trying to help Harry much like how she had helped Charles help Logan.

But…surely the Professor wasn't suggesting that there was anything more than a friendship between her and Logan…was he?

For the first time in a while, Ororo was thankful for her chocolate-coloured skin.

If only because of how it hid the blush that rose up her cheeks when she thought about the clawed man and how she was going to help him and his family be the family that all three of them had lost.

Chapter 3 and, aww, it seems that the Big Bad Wolverine might just be about to calm a Storm of a different colour, but will both of them allow themselves to explore…whatever this might be?

In the meantime, can they help Harry – aka Wolverine Jr – open up his heart and embrace the fun and laughter of being a kid? And what about Laura? Can she convince her cornered-animal of a big brother to relax and let the nice people pet him and rub his belly?
