Friday finally arrived. The day Big Red was dreading. He couldn't believe he was going to a party. He had gone to several theatre kid parties. However, this was a college party. Ricky promised to stay with Big Red the entire time.
The Rent cast list also came out on Friday. Seb was over the moon since he got cast as Roger. Roger was his first-ever lead. Gina, to no one surprise, got the role of Mimi. Carlos was Angel, and Emmy was going to be Joanne. Big Red was starting to miss the rush of doing a show. He didn't know Rent, so he had no clue who he'd get cast as. He made his entire high school acting career playing the goofy sidekick. He played LeFou in Beauty and The Beast, Ryan in High School Musical Three: Senior Year, and the Jester in Once Upon a Mattress.
Big Red didn't dress fancy for the party. He put on a Salt Lake Slices shirt, jeans, and sneakers. He walked downstairs. His parents had been making a big deal out of this all week. They pulled out their old polaroid camera for this night. "Are you sure you don't need extra hands tonight?" Big Red asked.
"We lucked out," Mrs. Redonvich told her husband. "Our son would rather work at the family restaurant than go to a party."
"You enjoy tonight," Mr. Redonvich said. "We've got the restaurant covered. After the year you had, you deserve to go to a party."
"Thanks," Big Red said. Big Red heard the sound of a car honking, signifying the arrival of Ricky. Big Red was focusing on getting his place instead of getting a car. He found other ways of getting to work instead of driving.
Big Red wasn't there for an hour, and he hated it. Despite Ricky's promise, Ricky disappeared into an ocean of college students. Another big difference between college and high school; in high school, all of Ricky's friends were Big Red's friends. Now, he didn't know any of these people.
Big Red found his way to a couch. He flopped onto it. "Let me guess," a voice said. Big Red turned his head around, spotting a boy. "You were also dragged here by a friend, then ditched?"
"Yeah," Big Red sighed.
"I'm Ian," the other boy introduced.
"Big Red," he responded.
"Don't meet many Big Reds in Salt Lake," Ian remarked.
"It's a family name," Big Red stated. Ian handed Big Red a solo cup.
"This will make the party go by faster," Ian said. Big Red recognized the horrid smell. They serve alcohol at Salt Lake Slices after nine o'clock in the evening. Big Red didn't drink any alcohol, and he didn't take any drugs. He didn't drink before his car accident, and he never drank after. "You okay?"
"I don't drink," Big Red said.
"You went to a party, and you're not going to drink?" Ian asked.
"Yeah," Big Red responded shortly.
"Don't be a wet blanket," Ian teased.
"Dude, drop it," Big Red said.
"I'm just trying to make sure you have a good time," Ian said. Big Red's mind drifts to that April night. Glass everywhere. His blood painted the dashboard. Ashlyn lay in the middle of the road, dead before the paramedics arrived.
"I said I don't drink," Big Red snapped.
"Okay," Ian said. He threw his hands up like he was under arrest. "Chill out!"
"This was a mistake," Big Red said. He got up from the couch. He needed to leave now. Big Red started his hunt for Ricky, but there were too many people. The people, loud music, and lights disorientated the eighteen-year-old. "Ricky!"
Big Red kept calling out for his friends. A familiar woman with silver-blonde hair approached him. The first known face he saw at the party. It was a first college party miracle. "Hey, are you okay?" Addison asked. That's when the vomit left Big Red's body.
