The S-Files: Next Try

Dossier 9: Kyoukou Mu

Friday, 1987/08/21 -- 8:30 a.m.

In their laboratory, Himiko and Makoto prepared everything for the examination of the Pope. Milo, who had accompanied them, sat on a chair in a corner watching the scientists and yawned. He found it a bit boring here, but if he returned to Sanctuary it would be in the night and definitely not be any more exciting.

Shun and Hyoga were already on their way to school -- or rather to Kido Mansion where their private teacher awaited them.

"Are you somehow in a bad mood?" Makoto asked Milo.

"Well... You see... Somehow I feel a bit useless now after all the Holy Wars... Saga was defeated, the God Warriors and Poseidon were defeated, too -- while we Goldies were left out of all the fun, mind you! -- then Hades was overcome, Gaia wasn't exactly attacking anyway, and Persephoneia..." He stretched lazily on his chair. "As a Gold Saint my duty is to protect Athena and fight for the good -- but currently everything seems to be annoyingly peaceful and there is no evil in sight that we might fight..."

"Awwww, I really pity you," Makoto said ironically. "You might be surprised, but I prefer it to be so peaceful. During the Poseidon War we were almost drowned by his floods, and Hades threatened us with this 'Greatest Eclipse' of his... Which, if you ask me, was a bit ridiculous in any way. The only thing the aligned planets caused were some earthquakes and an local eclipse over Sanctuary, because that God of the Underworld obviously had no idea of sky mechanics..."

"Whatever." Milo didn't want to admit that he didn't have any idea of sky mechanics either, and what he had heard about the sun being eternally eclipsed by the moon sounded pretty convincing to him. "What I wanted to say is -- I almost hope there would be some new God popping up and threatening the world so that I could save it and Athena!"

"I can very well live without some megalomaniac whatever who tries to conquer the world, leaving a vast track of destruction in his wake..."

"But what use are we Saints when everything is peaceful?"

"You say something," Makoto nodded. "But there are not many free jobs on the market for the likes of you, especially when your duty to Athena always comes first."

Milo hung his head.

"What are you saying?" Himiko piped. "Don't you remember -- he could be a perfect model!"

Milo blushed deeply. "Don't mention this!"

"Why not?" Makoto laughed. "I think it looked very alluring!"

"It's been highly embarassing! Actually I wanted to do something different, but the guys at the company offered me the most for that..."

"They realized immediately where your qualities lie."

"Pah! I'm an assassin, not a model for nylon tights!"

"What a pity..."

Milo grumbled something. "Maybe one should ask Poseidon to go for world domination again. Or Saga. I really need to be useful again!"

Makoto frowned deeply. "You would really like to start a war just to et some 'excitement' again?" she asked disbelievingly.

"Okay, it doesn't need to be so extreme."

"I don't know... You do seem to be pretty extreme to me," Makoto said thoughtfully.

"I'm Scorpio Gold Saint," Milo stated proudly.

"That's what I meant."

Suddenly a man with flowing lavender hair, clad in a long white robe with golden ornaments, materialized right in the middle of the lab.

"Morning," Mu greeted them a little tiredly.

"Hello," Makoto replied and readied her notepad while Milo yawned a "Hi Mu."

Himiko looked at the impressive outfit and decided it merited a certain respect, so she bowed before him. "Ohayou gozaimasu, Mu-sama."

Mu looked a bit puzzeled at the blonde and stifled a yawn. Usually in Sanctuary one went to sleep short after sundown and rose at daybreak, but the time difference meant that Mu had to stay up until almost 2 a.m. in the night.

Makoto smiled when she saw the Kyoukou's discomfort. "We will try to hurry," she promised.

"Indeed. This time there is no Cloth to examine," Himiko commented with a look at the pompous robe.

"That's good to hear," Mu nodded gracefully. "As usual, at Sanctuary waits a lot of work for me in the morning."

"Indeed?" Himiko asked curiously. "What kind of work does a Kyoukou do?"

"You maybe don't believe it, but it's a ton of boring paper work. Where to collect tithes, how to distribute the money to repair the buildings at Sanctuary, supervising the training of new Saints -- well, the works."

"Oh dear," Himiko said in commiseration. "So you'd like to have a new Holy War, too?"

"I'd be content to get some more office clerks. Triangulum Australe Astrios always complains that he has to do most of that stuff alone, and even though we have a new Keeper of Records with Horologium Kleio, the paperwork only gets worse, it seems."

"Hey, Milo, wouldn't that be an option for you?" Himiko wondered.

"Accounting and stuff like that! Thanks, but no thanks! I'm a Saint and not a clerk!"

"I'm sure Milo can only count as far as his fingers reach," Makoto teased.

"Pah." Milo sulked. "I'm a Gold Saint, but that doesn't mean I'm stupid!"

"Gold Saints can't be all stupid," Himiko chimed. "My Camus-sama is very intelligent." Promptly, Himiko emitted a swarm of little pink hearts. Mu watched her with great interest. It was just as Kiki had described it.

"I agree," Makoto grinned. "So far Camus has managed to escape you, which needs a lot of cunning and intelligence."

"But I will get him," Himiko decreed stubbornly. "And I will marry him."

Currently two medium-sized hearts floated twenty centimetres above Himiko's head. Mu was utterly fascinated by the display and touched one of them with his fingertip. It burst with an audible plopping sound. "That's incredible! How do you produce them?"

"I don't know," Himiko answered helplessly. "They simply happen."

"I definitely want an extensive examination of this phenomenon."

"Just say 'Camus' and they appear," Milo told Mu. And indeed, just when he mentioned the Aquarius Saint's name, a new heart appeared, this time a smaller one.

"Sometimes it's so bad that one can't see anything but pink hearts," Makoto complainef.

"This is certainly unique," Mu said. "When Kiki told me about it, I ordered Kleio to check the archives of Sanctuary, but there was no similar case reported throughout the written history of Sanctuary."

"I'm sorry, I can't help it," Himiko said miserably.

"We are going to find out if there is a way to control it," Mu promised.

"That would be nice. After all, when I marry my Camus-sama it would be very awkward if everything arond us would be filled up with pink hearts."

Utterly amazed, Mu's gaze followed the formation of a heart (measuring 25cm) in the brightest pink imaginable.

"Wow, that's a big one!" Makoto commented.

"Why does it always have to be Camus?" Milo sulked.

"Because you're just not her type," Makoto shrugged. Now Himiko produced a steady stream of her harmlessly looking but utterly annoying hearts.

"Obviously the problem is of greater urgency than I first thought," Mu stated and tried to shoo the objects away from himself.

"I told you!" Milo said accusingly.

"I didn't expect this extent."

"Sometimes it's even worse," Milo's mien darkened.

"We need to do something immediately," Mu decreed.

"I agree," Milo nodded.

"Don't talk, do!" Makoto demanded and gave both men a flyswat. They looked at the flyswats, shrugged and destroyed most of the floating hearts at lightspeed.

"That's better." Makoto breathed in relief. "And now we can begin the examination."

"As you wish." He swatted another two stray hearts.

"I'm sorry," Himiko whispered.

"Please try to think about something else," Makoto suggested. "A cold shower mayhap..."

"I'm trying hard!" Himiko squeezed her eyes shut. "Nigiri-zushi, chirashi-zushi, futo-maki," she listed several types of sushi and tried to think only of their preparation.

"I'm getting hungry," Milo said.

"You just had your breakfast," Makoto pointed out. "How can you be hungry again?"

"When she talks of food all the time..."

"Don't listen!"

"That's torture -- living between pink hearts and getting no food."

"Gunkan-maki, rainbow roll, inari," Himiko continued. Even though Milo protested, it helped against the heart production.

Mu watched them with amusement. If it was always like this here, he could understand why the Saints, who had already undergone the examination, talked so excitedly of their adventure with the 'Mad Doctorettes'.

"Himiko, think of something non-food and non-Camus!" Milo demanded.

"I want to begin the examination now," Makoto urged.

"I'm here and I don't resist," Mu said dryly.

"Great." Makoto directed the Pope to the examination table.

"May I help you somehow?" Milo volunteered. He desperately needed some diversion.

"No thanks, I can do it alone. You'd only stand in my way."

"If you say so," he sighed and sat down again in his corner.

"I will do the interview," Himiko said.

"Why not. I have enough work with the medical examination." She readied her variours instruments and devices. Fortunately Mu was a compliant subject.

"1.82m, 75kg, bloodtype A," she wrote down.

"I hope I have seen the last of your needles now," Mu sighed. "This wasn't fun."

"It wasn't supposed to be fun," Makoto lectured.

"All Saints have to endure this," Himiko pointed out. "Even my wonderful Camus-sama!" Of course this caused some new hearts which were exterminated by Milo before they multiplied too heavily.

"I'm done," Makoto assured him and examined a strand of Mu's lavender hair with great interest. "I definitely need a sample of this."

When she rummaged for a pair of scissors, Mu looked at her with a deep frown. "You will not cut any of my hair!"

"But we need samples of everything," Makoto claimed.

Himiko sighed. She was a bit annoyed that she had forgotten to keep a strand of Camus' hair. Milo killed another three hearts.

"Promise no one will notice anything!" Mu said.

"Don't worry, I will cut a strand that is normally hidden." Makoto took her sample. "This colour is incredible. I really have to examine this."

"I want a piece of my Camus-sama, too," Himiko demanded.

"Didn't I ask you to think of something else?" Makoto sighed and watched Milo who continued to work as exterminator of hearts.

Mu checked his hair carefully if the missing strand was visible. To his relief it wasn't.

"But I can't," Himiko sniffed.

"How many more of these can she produce?" Milo asked exasperatedly.

"I think the amount is truly unlimited." Makoto shook her head.

"Indeed. The Cosmo doesn't know any limits," Mu agreed.

"And no plug to switch it off," Makoto sighed.

"But fortunately I have a flyswat," Milo stated and swatted the next heart.

"Well, you always wanted to be the great heartbreaker..."

Milo grimaced. "But not of hearts dedicated to Camus!"

"I don't think Himiko will do you the favour and produce any for you..."

"You're mean."

"Haven't you noticed? -- Okay, I have my data complete."

"Fine! Then I can begin the interview!" Himiko turned on the tape recorder and beckoned Mu to the table where she sat. He took place vice versa of her. "Let's start right away," she said. "When have you been born and where?"

"March 27th, 1966, in Jamir."

"Just like Phrixos?"

"Yes, Kiki and I are from the same area."

"Is it true that you belong to the last descendants of the mythical Empire of Mu?"

"There is a possibility of this."

"Why only a possibility?"

"Because there is no proof available. How could it? The Empire of Mu was said to exist about 24000 years ago and thus preceded even Atlantis for thousands of years. And there are no traces of Atlantis left even though it was destroyed 'only' 12000 years ago."

"I'm sure Makoto will find some genetic evidence in your tissue and blood samples."

"Maybe," Mu shrugged.

"Well, there are some obvious pecularities," Makoto commented, "such as your eyebrow dots. But the genetic material definitely needs some further examination."

"Yeah, these dots are indeed weird," Milo nodded.

"I had them since I can remember," Mu said.

"I wonder why the dots have a colour different from your hair colour," Makoto pondered.

"They are simply dots," Himiko scrutinized Mu's brows. Mu's face, when Makoto came with a cloth and some alcohol and tried to wipe them away, was priceless. "Ah. It seems they are indeed no sports of paint."

"Of course not," Mu said in utter indignation.

"My Camus-sama also has very unusual eyebrows," Himiko sighed.

"Help! It starts again!" Milo hurriedly extinguished the next heart attack.

"Yes. Unfortunately she manages to twist every topic so that she can talk of Camus. But think positive -- this means you will be occupied for the next time until she manages to control it."

"I'm so sorry," Himiko said desperately. "I wish I could..."

"You will get lessons to cope with your Cosmo," Mu promised.

"Lessons? Cool! When can I begin?"

"As soon as your teacher is here."

"And who will that be?"

"You will see soon enough."

"But I'm curious!"

"Aren't we all?" Mu laughed. "Didn't you want to interview me?"

"Oh, of course. So, how did you grow up?"

"Like anybody else, I'd say. I got older and grew up." Mu knew he wouldn't get out of here until the interview was over, but on the other and he didn't like to reveal to much about himself either. So he had to compromise.

"Ha ha! Who was your father and who your mother?"

"I'm sorry, that's something I really can't remember."

"You are not very helpful," Himiko complained.

"I'm just doing what I'm asked to do."

"Hm..." Himiko put on a deceptively sweet smile. "And if I would ask you to strip...?"

"I'm pretty sure this is not expected in Athena's survey."

"A pity..." Hmiko grinned. Seeing the Kyoukou strip and danke would have been fun. "Okay, next question -- how did you grow up?"

"Hm, it just happened. The years went by and I grew taller and older."

Himiko have him an evil glare. "Then how did you join the Saints?"

"One day a Saint came by and took me to Sanctuary."

"Hm-hm..." Himiko frowned and tried to come up with questions that could not be so easily evaded. "Did you have your telekinetic abilities then already?"

"I can't remeber a time when I didn't have any such abilities."

"Cool." Himiko looked at him. "You were the Aries Gold Saint before you became the Kyoukou... So how did you get your Cloth?"

"As far as I know you have already interviewed the new Aries Gold Saint, haven't you? I underwent the same Test of Cloth."

Himiko sighed again. "And what about your position as the Kyoukou?"

"I was elected by the other Gold Saints and Athena agreed to their choice."

"Just of curiousity -- how many votes did you get?"

"Eight."

"More than half -- not bad."

"The final result wasn't reached in the fist vote."

"A fish would be more talkative than you," Himiko complained.

"So why don't you go and interview Pisces Aphrodite instead?"

Himiko shook her head. "I give up..."

"Why this?" Mu laughed.

"Don't you know that famous saying about mathematicians? You are just like them - every answer is absolutely true, but likewise absolutely useless."

"And interesting view," Mu grinned.

"I had a professor at the Dokkyo University who was just like this!"

"Is your interview now finished?" Mu inquired.

"The interview, yes. But we need to record your attacks for the files."

"If you insist..."

"Yes. Please follow me to the test range."

Himiko led Mu outside, and of course he also commented on the iced range before he presented his attacks. Even though he was no active Gold Saint anymore, his position as Kyoukou made him the leader of the army of Saints whenever a new Holy War would arise.

One after the other, he executed Starlight Extinction, Stardust Revolution and Crystal Wall.

Himiko watched them in awe. If the range hadn't been so thoroughly frozen, they would certainly have needed a new one.

"I guess now I can return to Sanctuary?" Mu asked.

"Yes, we are finished now. Thanks for yor cooperation."

"Don't mention it. When I'm back at Sanctuary, I will send you your teacher immediately."

"That's nice. Thank you!" Himiko smiled at the Kyoukou. She only hoped this new teacher wouldn't be too strict.

In his usual light effect, Mu teleported away and Himiko returned indoors where Makoto and Milo waited for her.
