Chapter 7
Klaus has dragged Tristan the Martel in the basement, in a cell far enough from his sister's that they couldn't hear or speak to each other. When he woke up, he saw that he was in chains and in a agonizing pain. He knew that he had been injected with the very same poison that he had created. And there, standing before him, was Klaus, with a smug smile on his lips.
"Yes, you feel it, I did the same to you that you did to my brother and Caroline. Injecting you with your own poison, that's got to sting, my friend."
"What do you want?" Tristan groaned.
"What do you think I want. Well, think. Maybe, " And with that he grabbed his face to make him look at him, "I want the cure for that poison. If you give me that, I promise to cure you too with that. If you don't, then you'll die in agony."
"Then I'll die, I don't have any cure for that."
"You are lying. You of all people wouldn't create something without making sure there was an antidote."
"Believe what you want."
Klaus knew he wasn't getting anywhere just talking. Luckily for him, he knew Tristan. That little twat didn't have a lot of tolerance for pain.
"Okay, I'm done asking nicely. I'll start cutting you into little pieces if you don't start talking. Starting with your eyes. That has got to hurt." So he picked up a knife and walked to Tristan and put a knife at his left eye, fully ready to make a good on his threat.
Just as he was starting to press the knife through his skin, he scream for him to stop. That he has the cure.
"Tell me where is it?" Klaus asked, keeping the knife at his eye.
"It's in my apartment, In a safe. Behind this ugly painting. Code is 536819"
Then he released the vampire for the time being.
"Okay, we'll check it. But if you are lying…"
"I'm not. But there's one little thing you need to know."
"What?" Klaus barked.
"There's only one cure, one dose of it. So I am already dead. But you'll have to figure out who is more precious for you. Your brother or this Caroline." And then he just laughed an evil laughter that echoed through the house.
Klaus felt that sudden rage coming over him so he picked up the stake that he had gotten ready earlier and stabbed him the chest with that.
Seething in rage, he went upstairs, finding everyone including Hayley and Rebekah in the courtyard.
They had heard everything and everyone were so mad at him, he could see.
"Why did you kill him?" Hayley asked in rage
"He could have helped us get more of the cure." Rebekah added, angry.
"He doesn't have more and he wouldn't have helped us get any more of it. He doesn't know how. And their lackeys, who know the scientific part of it, started working for themselves the minute they learned that he and his sister have been imprisoned. It's over."
And he started to go to Tristan's apartment to get the cure when Hayley yelled after him. "You don't know that, you have sentenced one of them to death, Klaus." With that he stopped walking for a few seconds, stood there, in shock that it was really happening. He had to choose between his brother and the love of his life. Then he continued to go.
He found the cure in his safe as Tristan had said, it was a exactly that one little bottle of the antidote, only enough for one.
When he got back, he decided to first to talk to them both and then decide what to do.
So he went to Caroline's coffin, took her hand again in his hand , focused and pretty soon she was back at the country house, on the porch, standing there, while she sat in the armchair and still read "War and Peace".
"Klaus, what's going on? You look, I don't know, kind of upset?"
"Caroline, love, there have been some developments.?"
"Like what?" She asked, while he sat down next to her in a chair of his own.
"I have Tristan de Martel, he gave me the cure but…"
"But what, Klaus?"
"There's only one cure, one dose of it," he sighed.
"I see," Caroline said as she stood up, "you came to say goodbye."
"No. What? No. I didn't. I came to see if you were alright and that things are a little complicated but we won't give up. On neither of you."
"Klaus, It's okay, I'm ready to die. I am. I know you can't loose your brother, so just give the cure to your brother and be done with it."
"Ready to die? You haven't even lived yet!" He yelled in frustration as he also stood up too.
"I have lived enough, I have experienced sow much in those short years: life, friends and love." She smiled at him when she said the word 'love'. "The small things in life that make you happy to be a alive"
"And I want you alive. I have so much else to show you about life. I want to take you to see the world, all that I promised you and more." With that he closed the distance between them, took her in his arms and pressed his lips on hers and she didn't protest. She gave in to the kiss as she knew that maybe it was the last time she could kiss him. Even if it was even in real life, it felt so good, so right. And in that moment she couldn't understand what she thought was so wrong about him. Yes, he was a monster, but so was she, so were her friends. They have all killed the people for the ones they loved.
When they finally broke apart, he didn't let her say anything, he just left, disappeared.
After that, in reality, Klaus went to his brother, did the same thing as with Caroline and in a matter of seconds he found himself in a piano bar. There were no people in the bar, but his brother was behind a piano, playing.
"Hello, brother."
"Hello, Niklaus." Elijah stopped playing for now and smiled at his brother which quickly turned to sorrow as his brother was clearly upset.
"What's wrong?"
"We got the cure, but there's only one dose of it."
"I see, so you have to choose between me and Caroline. Choose her, Niklaus."
"What? Why?"
"Because, I have roamed this earth for a thousand years, I have lived and seen and experienced everything that world has to offer, but she hasn't. She hasn't even started to live. I'm ready to go and whatever she says, she's not."
"I don't think I can live without you. I'm afraid I'll go mad."
"You won't. Niklaus, I believe the opposite. I believe that Caroline can keep you in check even better than I have throughout the years. You have already seen it. I believe you will be happy with him."
"Yeah, assuming that she'll stay with me after I cure her," he sighed.
"Then you will chase after her until she gives in." Elijah let's out a laugh, "Even if it takes a couple of centuries."
"I don't know, Elijah."
"Choose her, Niklaus. Trust me, it's the right thing to do."
With that Klaus let go and was back in reality. He walked back to Caroline's coffin, took out the cure and after a little hesitation injected her with it. He saw that the skin near the place she was injected with was slowly starting to get cured but she didn't wake up just yet. He knew that it would take some time, so he went to talk with his siblings.
