Chapter 428
That morning, Steve had left his house at the same time a Rowan. Him to Honolulu airport to pick up Adam and Rowan to deal with some banking issue.
Something to do with one of her cheques being held by a bank that she didn't usually bank with. She was confused with how that got there and she was guessing that Alex had purposely attempted to pay her incorrectly, because that was so him.
Steve asked why she was still letting him buy her songs if their petty feud was still going on and Rowan shrugged. A lot of her songs fit his vocal range, so while she didn't like him she knew he'd do the songs she wrote justice.
It was supposed to be the two of them picking up Adam today, but Rowan got that emergency call from her bank and now it was just him. It was also supposed to be Adam and Kono, but Rowan had told him last night that she wasn't coming.
Steve didn't want to believe that though. He wanted to see his friend. But then Wo Fat called to tell Rowan that he was moving out to Nevada again because something was going down in Boulder City. That meant Kono was going with him.
But neither Adam nor Kono had said anything about that yet, so he didn't want to jinx it, but it turned out Rowan was right.
It was alright though, he kissed his wife good bye, told her to give Alex hell. She kissed him right back and told him to give Adam an extra hug from her and then they split ways.
When he got to the airport he picked up two leis, because he was hoping that Kono was going to surprise him by just sending Wo Fat to Boulder City, even though he knew there was no way that she'd let that man go anywhere by himself. Not considering his track record with shooting people way too many times, mostly to prove a point. But also because Rowan was adamant that Adam was going to need the cheering up, so double leis would be needed right away.
Then he was just waiting for Adam to come out of the arrivals section. It didn't take long either, Adam was literally the fourth person out. He only had carry on cases though, so that was probably way.
"Hey, yo!" Steve said when he spotted him.
"Hey. Steve!" Adam called back, pushing a little more quickly with the crowd to get to him. When he got close Steve pulled him in for bro hug. "It's good to see you."
"Mahalo, Brother. Welcome back.
"No Ro?"
Yeah that was everyone's first question when Steve showed up without his wife. No one wanted Steve, they all wanted his wife. "She had a banking emergency, Alex is trying to stiff her we think. You'll see her soon though, I promise."
Adam nodded and then simply stood back and waited for Steve to say something but Steve wasn't sure what he wanted until he said: "Not gonna ask about Kono?"
"Naw, Ro got the message last night, from Wo, about them moving out. When we realized she was still with him on whatever op they're chasing we figured she wasn't coming."
Adam nodded. "Yeah, a lead panned out in Boulder City and if she didn't follow up, she'd regret it," he said. "I asked if she could just send Wo but uh…"
"I'm guessing she's his wrangler?"
"Yeah."
"Yeah, Sorry about that. That man needs a walking talking conscience otherwise he's just… you know… barbaric."
"Oh trust me. I know," Adam said. "I spend a lot of time with him. You think he'd remember my name…"
"Yeah, I've noticed he's bad with names too… Ro says he does it cause he wants to assert his social dominance, I think he's just losing his memory."
At that Adam laughed. "Well, I could have followed them there, like I've been doing but sitting in a motel room, eating out of a vending machine, waiting for your wife to return… it's not as glamourous as it sounds." He then paused to shrug. "Figured it was time to come back home and try to have some semblance of a life."
Rowan had told him that Adam was going to come back feeling down. That it was Steve's job to help perk Adam up, but now that he was staring down that hopeless frustration so plain on the man's face it was a lot harder said than done.
He was still going to try though.
"This, uh, this is gonna end. You know that, right?"
"Yeah. That's what she said."
Steve tried to smile and change the topic. "Well, it's good to see you brother."
"Yeah, it's good to see you."
"I got these for you," he said showing him the two Leis. "I still went with two cause Ro said you'd need a pick me up."
"Wow, lucky me," he said as Steve put them over his head. He even spent a good couple of seconds making sure they were on perfectly straight for him. "Uh, Wo mentioned her powers were down, or you're restricting them? That still happening?"
Steve nodded and Adam shot him a bit of a smirk. "So she's shut down her powers but she's still doing the whole vision thing?"
"Yeah, no matter how hard I try to block she's still getting that intuition stuff."
"You know what's going on with that?"
"No. But she feels funny when she's you know… using them actively now so we're trying to keep her from actually doing anything. It's not really working, but it's much better than before. But enough about Ro," he said. "You hungry?"
"I unno man. Coach served a bag of these miniature pretzels. I think I had six of them."
"Good. I'm starving too. Let's get out of here. Let's go find some grinds."
"Sounds good."
As the two of them headed for the door Steve slung an arm around Adam's shoulder. Adam might have felt like this return to Hawaii was bittersweet, but Steve was going to prove him wrong.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
"After all we've been through. I figured she'd wanna do everything she could to be together."
And then Adam sighed, heavy and forlorn. Like he was the most hard done by guy in the universe. Steve knew this was coming, Rowan had warned him, but somehow he had no idea it was going to be that bad.
He had hoped that the familiar surroundings, the prospect of good food might have lifted his spirits but is seemed to have made things worse. Adam clearly wanted to be doing those things with Kono, seeing these things without her was very much reminding him that she had effective chose work over him.
"This thing she's doing up there, it more than a job. You know that, Adam. It's her legacy."
Steve wasn't sure why he even bothered because he had said that about Five-0 and himself and Rowan had scoffed and said: That's stupid. And the way Adam was looking at him he had a feeling that he felt the same way.
"When she gets done with it, she's going to retire and then you two are gonna start making babies."
He wished he could say: "Rowan said so," but he couldn't cause Rowan couldn't tell him how it was going to end for them. And that was worrisome. He also didn't want to tell Adam that.
"That would be nice," he said in a rather patronizing way. The kind of way where you say it cause you know the other person is trying to cheer you up and you want them to think it would work. "You know, a while back, she thought she might be pregnant. Told Wo Fat before she told me."
Steve nodded. "Yeah, I know how that one feels. I don't know what it is about him but for some reason people like to confide in him. It's weird."
"Well… she wasn't so I guess it wasn't meant to be."
Okay, this conversation was turning dark, like really dark. How would Rowan deal with this? What would she say to try and cheer this man up. "Well, as Rowan would say, everything happens when it's supposed to happen."
Steve internally cringed, that was not what Rowan would say. Yes she said a version of that particular quote ALL the time, but that probably wasn't what she would have said to him… and if it was it probably would have been done in a more empathetic kind of way.
"Well Rowan can tell the future," Adam said. "Not sure it counts coming from her."
See, Adam knew bare minimum of Rowan's powers, so he wouldn't know that some things she couldn't change, and honestly Steve didn't want to go into it now.
"Yeah, kinda sounds like a fortune cookie, right?" Adam shot him a bit of a smile that Steve smiled at too. "Just you wait, all these babies you two are going to have…. You and Kono I mean… they're gonna call me Uncle Steve, just wait."
At that Adam laughed. "One step at a time, brother, okay? Let's just get her back to the island. Right now, I'll settle for that."
Right, so make Rowan pull her like she did for Wo Fat, yeah, Steve could get her to do that. She really shouldn't cause using her powers made her feel funny still, but you know what, if she could do it for her brothers, she could do it for Adam.
"Did... did I hear that you and Danny are going to open a restaurant together?" Adam asked. "I think… I think Wo mentioned that too."
Yeah, Wo Fat was all up in his business, like all of the damn fucking time. In a way he was worse then Danny.
"Yep, yep, me and Danny, we got a place, we're looking into doing it up, getting looking a little more fancy, he wants it to be Italian."
"In China town?" Adam asked and Steve groaned.
"Wo was uh… Wo was shit talking again, wasn't he?"
"No… he was flat out making fun of you," Adam said and Steve shook his head. Of course. Of course he was. "I'm telling you. Trust me on this. Forget about the brick and mortar. Get yourself a food truck. If it doesn't work out, you can always drive it off a cliff and collect on the insurance."
See he hated this. He hated how often people felt the need to tell him how stupid this choice was, how it was going to fail, blow up in their faces. Why couldn't anyone just… be proud of them? Why did everyone have to give them advice the second they mentioned the restaurant he and Danny were going to open.
"Have you lost your mind since you were away? You been spending too much time with Wo Fat?" he asked and Adam just smirked at him. "And besides, do you think I need more time in a moving vehicle with Detective Danny Williams?"
At that Adam laughed. "Yeah, that's right. I didn't consider that. How is Danny, anyway?"
"He's alright. He's cranky. He's the crankiest person I ever met."
"Yeah. You haven't seen Wo Fat on one of his bad days," Adam said. "Woooh, the whole team is terrified of him. But then again he did smash a coffee pot and threaten someone with it once."
"What why?"
"They drank the last cup of coffee."
Steve tried not to laugh, yeah, Wo Fat who wasn't used to sharing but was used to always getting his way. He must hate having to work in an office or with a team half the time. "Bet they never did that again."
"No." Adam said with a shake of his head. "Hey, did I also hear that you got a dog?"
"Okay, how about you just tell me everything Wo Fat told you," Steve said. "And why he talks about me so much."
"He gets his updates from Ro," Adam said and then shrugged. "And well, I guess both Kono and I like the updates. Kinda cheers us up when we're down. You know, hearing that you guys are still up to your old hijinks." Steve nodded and then Adam said: "So seriously, you got a dog?"
"Yes I did. I got a dog. His name's Eddie. He's unbelievable."
"I thought both you and Ro were cat people."
"I was, but I don't know, he did something to me. I think he did a Jedi mind trick on me," Steve said. "Ro… Ro is still a cat person."
"She doesn't like Eddie?"
"No, she does, I think. But uh… yeah… I unno… she wanted a cat, still wants a cat…"
"How did you convince her to get a dog?"
Steve shot him a look and then said: "Uh… did Wo Fat tell you…" "—That you surprised her with a dog when she came home from LA? Yeah."
"Then why did you ask me?"
"Cause I wanted to see if you actually are that stupid," he said with a shit eating smirk.
Steve's phone rang and that was the only reason he wasn't getting smacked upside the head.
"Don't know why you came back here with Wo Fat's attitude. Did you have to check it or did they let you take it in your carry on? You're lucky this phone is ringing," Steve said as he went to answer it. "Yeah, Junior. What's up man?"
"Hey, sir. I'm outside the Oahu S and L on Hauoli. This may be nothing, but I see four guys entering with empty duffles. Looks like something's about to go down."
"Alright, stay put. I'm on the way, alright?"
He got a "Yes, sir," from Junior before he hung up. He then turned to Adam said: "Hang on," then before the man could grab anything he put his new silver Silverado through the most aggressive u-turn ever.
Great.
Just great.
Why was he always catching cases on his days off?
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Steve turned off his flashers and sirens when he got close to the bank. He didn't want to alert the robbers and escalate the situation. He parked close to where he could spot Junior on the curb across the street and then him and Adam were out of his Truck and heading towards him.
"Are they still in the bank?" Steve asked when he got close enough.
"Yes sir."
"Right, where's their car?"
"It's right over there," Junior said gesturing to the red grand marquis across the street.
"Right, hold that for me," he said handing Junior his gun.
Then before Junior or Adam could stop him, he walked up to the car. It was off, which was odd, and there was no one sitting inside. Also odd. Why wasn't there a getaway driver? He used his shirt to open up the car door, because it was also unlocked and found that there was a screwdriver in the ignition.
Right, so stolen car, but no one in it.
This was not looking good.
The next place he went was to the bank. He snuck around the bushes to try and see into the office and found that people were on the floor, hands zip tied. No sign of any of the robbers though.
Also not good.
But it wasn't confirming the hostage situation that put the fear into him, it was the sudden overwhelming ping of his compass. Like Rowan was near-by. Like Rowan was in there. But he didn't see her on the floor with the others.
Steve stayed longer then he should have trying to establish if Rowan was there, but then forced himself away. It couldn't be Rowan, she was at her bank… actually… no she wasn't, she was at a different bank… she had never told him which one. But it wasn't this one. She only used this one for her fake accounts during the Year of Deceit, and it had been one bank in a rotation of ten.
There was no reason for her to be there.
But the itch to pick up his phone and call her was strong. The feeling that she was somehow in danger and in need of him was practically making him hyperventilate.
His compass hadn't been all that accurate since they had started muting her powers, so he didn't quite trust it at that moment. But he knew the second he got a chance he was going to call her. Just to make sure that she was okay.
Steve jogged back across the street to where Junior and Adam were waiting for him. Honestly he was surprised none of them joined him, he would have thought for sure that Junior would have followed him.
"You got a cop's gut, kid. There's at least eight hostages in that bank. They're all tied up. It doesn't look like any of them have been hurt. I'm going to go in. Call Captain Grover and tell him what's going on…"
"Hey!" he heard someone call and when he turned he saw Con coming up to him. Crossing the street to join them. "What are you doing here?"
His caught eyes on Adam and then pointed at him. "I know you! Spicy's Hubby, right? Never remember her name, but she's working with Wo now right?"
"Is this just something you and Wo do?" Adam asked but Con just stared at him. "Adam, Con. You know my name we've been introduced before."
"Yeah, but every time I see you you're either tied up or crying, kinda hard to tell when you're just normal," he said but he did shake his hand. "And you gotta call me Sin Nombre, you ain't earned Con yet."
Adam shook his head but said nothing to him. Then, exactly like Ro would, he looked at Junior with disdain before turning to Steve. "What… did you track your wife again?"
Steve's heart practically stopped in his chest. "Track my wife?"
"You heard what I said," Con snapped. "And you better not have, you know she hates it when you do that!"
Steve glanced around and then back to Con, his eyes wide with his concern. "You're… you're here with Rowan?"
"Uh, no duh."
Oh god. Oh no, no this was not happening. Steve looked around again, his eyes flying straight back to the bank where that worry and bad feeling had originated. Fuck, it WAS his compass wasn't it?
"Where… where's my wife, Con?"
"She's in the bank, she's arguing with them about why they didn't shut her account down… and why they've been accepting cheques from Alex without telling her and I wanted a smoke so I'm out here."
No. No, his compass had been right?! Why had he second guess it?
"My wife's in the bank? That bank?" he snapped pointing at the building. Con nodded. "You mean the bank we're more than 100% certain is getting fucking robbed right now?"
The cocky smile faded right off his lips. He glanced first to the bank and then turned back to Steve as if to ask if he was serious. When Steve just glared back at him, his eyes slid over Adam and Junior like their expression might illuminate if this was real or not.
Then, as quickly as he realized that they weren't joking, Con was gone, having bolted for the door. Steve shouted a: "Stay there, Adam, watch him!" over his shoulder and then chased after his brother-in-law.
By the time he got into the bank Con was just standing there. "She's not here," he said.
That meant he had looked at all the hostages and Rowan wasn't there.
"You don't think… I mean… why would they take her?" Steve asked, noting that Con seemed to be heading for the stairs that led down to the vault.
Like he was about to take them on all by himself.
Well, the man would, and he'd probably win, but it was still a stupid idea.
"I unno, maybe this was a play to kidnap her, woman's rich after all," Con said. "Though knowing her she just got sarcastic at the wrong time…"
Con came to a complete stand still. Voices were floating up to them from the stairs. It took a while for Steve to notice but Con got it right away. It was Rowan.
"Lord knows why you're shoving, it's not like I'm going to make a break for it!"
Con moved towards the potted plant closest to the staircase. Steve wondered if he actually thought that would hide him.
"Just shut up!" someone shouted. "For the love of god, shut the fuck up. You're going to go to the washroom, and then you're going to be quiet that's the deal."
"Naw… I don't like that deal any more, I think I'd like it better if you died."
"Bitch…"
Steve crouched down, gun ready to shoot whenever Rowan was clear of the door. She did come up the stairs first, followed by the robber in a weird jumpsuit get up. Like the blue kind maintenance workers wore.
Problem was the second his boots touched the floor Con was on him. He launched himself over that potted plant, knocking it over and jumped onto the Robber's back. He got his arms in a choke hold position before the Robber could think to shoot at Rowan or even fight back.
Then there was two twists, a grunt and a snap and the man went limp in Con's arms.
Steve knew right away what had happened, and already he was moving to shield his wife, who did not do well with death.
Con let the body drop and Rowan went to stand with him though.
"HA! Told ya!" she shouted down to the dead body. "Who's the bitch now, BITCH!"
Okay. That was weird too. Usually she just vomited.
"Come here," he snapped, pulling her away from Con before he could hug her. Steve wrapped his wife up in his arms and just held her, until his heart went back to normal. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, but uh... the robbers are downstairs, don't you want to get them."
"Why are you even here?"
"Alex tried to transfer money to an account I still have here, not sure how. I was transferring it back and getting it closed when they hit."
Okay, so it really was an account she made during the Year of Deceit, when she was trying to hide her banking from him. So far it was making sense so far.
"Why did they take you downstairs?"
"Cause they wanted to hit the vault."
"Yes, but why take you," Con clarified for him.
"Oh, uh, cause I refused to get on the ground."
"You refused… Rowan are you crazy?"
"No. This is a Dior one of a kind bespoke suit, made just for me. There was no way I was getting on the dirty dusty floor in this."
Okay, explained why she refused to get on the ground, but, if she was being that obnoxious, like Rowan was prone to being, why hadn't they just shot her? Or hit her? It made no sense to take her with them.
He wanted to ask her about that. He wanted answers, and he was going to ask, but the door opened up behind them and he wasn't expecting anyone else.
Steve turned around gun in hand pointing it right at Junior, he lowered it right away. "What the hell are you thinking?"
"Well… I'm much better use in here then out there," Junior said. "And I don't like waiting."
"You don't like waiting…"
"He's just like you," Rowan said and he turned back to his wife.
"You, you are in so much trouble when this is over, do you understand me? Sassing Robbers, what is wrong with you," he cried and then turned back to Junior before she could answer. "Were did you get that gun?"
"From your gun safe under your seat."
Rowan snorted and Steve shot a glare at her but that didn't stop her from giggling.
"There you are!" Adam cried from the doorway.
Steve almost jumped out of his skin, he should have expected Adam chasing after Junior but for some reason he hadn't. He turned a dark glare to Adam, Rowan, however, was ecstatic to see him.
"Adam! Hiiii!" she cried going to hug him right away.
"Are you serious?" Steve cried.
"I turned my back and he was gone," he said gesturing to Junior whilst still hugging Rowan. "I figured he went after you."
"And you just figured you'd follow him in here?"
"Yeah, you told me to keep an eye on him, that's what I'm trying to do," he said and Rowan snorted again.
"Ha, he's got you there."
Steve tugged his wife out Adam's arms and made him look at her. "Did you know about this?"
"No, I'm still dreaming about a plane, nothing about a bank blowing up."
"What?"
Rowan huffed at him. "Look do you want to get them or not?"
"Right, they're at the vault?"
"Yes, manager's with them," she said. "We'll untie everyone, you just go."
Steve sighed but they were right. "Okay this time, you two stay right here…"
"Naw, take one of them, I'mma stay up here with her, okay?" Con said.
Steve nodded and Adam and Junior moved to follow him. As they were heading down the stairs Rowan called: "Be careful boys," to them and then after a beat of silence added: "Except you Junior. Don't care if you get hurt."
Adam snorted a bit. "Yeah, Wo's right, she really doesn't like you. What did you do to piss her off?"
Junior sighed. "Commander McGarrett says its cause he sprung me on her, but I'm starting to think she's just pissed off I exist."
Steve shushed them and they were quiet the rest of the way down the stairs. They found the manger on the ground, bleeding form his head, completely out of it.
Adam had looked around the small office space to see if he could spot any Robbers while Junior stayed on point in case the vault opened up.
"They're gone," Adam said when he finished his search, which literally took less than a minute.
"If we didn't see them leave, then where'd they go?" Junior wondered.
Steve pointed to the safe. "They're in there."
Steve took a step forward and Adam grabbed him. "Ro said she was dreaming about a plane crash right?" Steve turned to him. "Yeah a plane crash… not a bank blowing up."
That's right, she had said that.
"It's gonna blow," Steve said, pushing Adam away and reaching for Junior.
"Wait… how would she know that? Why do we care about what she's dreaming?" Junior cried, letting Steve pull him away.
They get a few steps away but the bang and the blast still knock them to their feet.
