Chapter 1:
Hermione wasn't really sure how she got here, or maybe she should say how they got here because she didn't arrive alone. Harry and herself had been reading in the library of Grimmauld place, Teddy sleeping on Harry's lap, he had fallen asleep to the story Harry had been quietly reading aloud. Watching Harry with Teddy has always been adorable. Harry is an amazing father to Teddy, one of the only links to Teddy's parents that Teddy would ever have, at least that's what she thought.
Everything had seemed normal, it was a silent night nothing weird had happened during the day, and then all of a sudden there was a glow from the tapestry room. At first, they thought that Ron had come back from the bar drunk again. Last time they had to stop the fire he had lit on the drapes from spreading to the rest of the house. Ron get's a little spell crazy when he isn't thinking clearly, acting like the war hasn't ended yet, and like they were still on the run from death eaters. Losing Fred seemed to break something in Ron. He wasn't the boy Harry and Hermione went through hell and back with any longer, instead he was a shell of his former self. They had tried what they could, but they unfortunately just weren't what Ron needed to be better. He'd never be his old self, but Hermione just wished he was no longer the man who was drinking his life away to escape the pain. The only redeeming thing about his descent into alcoholism is that he wasn't physically or verbally abusive, otherwise Harry would have had to kick him out long before now, for Teddy's safety if nothing else.
Anyway, they went to find the source of the light, Harry bringing Teddy with them, since it would be easier to just check what Ron had done this time, and then bring Teddy up to bed. The wards on Grimmauld made it so only the Weasleys and Andromeda could enter without being let in, Harry had reset them after the war not wanting to put Teddy in danger. They believed that they were safe in their home since the wards hadn't been set off. Neither of them had expected to see that the Black Family Tapestry was glowing an odd royal purple. Ron no where to be seen to offer an explanation. Before either of them could even think of what to do next the light engulfed the three of them.
All Hermione remembered after that was a spinning sensation and then just pure darkness.
Now here they were in a random field in what seems to be the middle of nowhere. Hermione and Harry had landed on their feet, instead of flat on their backs on the ground, and Teddy hadn't even stirred from his spot curled in Harry's arms. It was odd because Hermione knew whatever she had felt, whatever that light had been, that it definitely wasn't a portkey, despite their change in location.
"Hermione where are we?"
"I don't know Harry, is Teddy alright?" She was so glad that whatever happened hadn't separated them from Teddy or made Harry land on the poor toddler.
"Yeah, he's still just sleeping, what in the blazes was that?"
"Again, I don't know Harry. For once I have absolutely no idea what's going on, or what we should do."
"I don't like this, shit, Hermione please tell me you have your wand!" Harry cursed after maneuvering Teddy around in his arm to feel in his pockets.
The frantic tone had Hermione panic as she reached for her wand holster and realized it was gone. Actually, other then the clothes all three of them were wearing, it seemed like nothing else had made it here with them. They were truly stranded. With no money to even think of taking the Knight Bus. Not even the Man Who Conquered got a free pass. Hermione's beaded bag was gone from the necklace she had charmed it to, she had always been afraid that they'd one day have to go on the run again. Yet, despite all her preparation to make sure that they had everything they ever needed for the next time, it was gone, and there was nothing around them other then grass for miles.
Hermione could see something in the distance, but she wasn't sure whether it was a town, or just hills. It was too far away to get an accurate read on it from this distance. Yet it was their best chance. Without any supplies they couldn't just stay here with Teddy, especially without their wands. Harry and Hermione both knew a bit of wandless magic, but not enough to make her worry less about their current situation. Not when they had to protect both themselves and Teddy, they couldn't do the reckless shit Harry tended to get away with to survive when they had to worry about Teddy's safety. They were the only one's capable of protecting the little boy.
"We'll have to walk. Hopefully the change in the landscape in the distance is a town. From there we can see about asking to use a floo to get home. If the town has any witches or wizards. If it doesn't, we're going to have to think of some reason on why we just appeared out of thin air, with a 1 ½ year old, and no supplies in sight. Not to mention figure out what to do to for money until we can find a way home or at least a way to contact someone we trust."
"I'm not sure if that's going to help 'Mione. Have you tried a wandless Tempus? I really hope I'm just mixing up the spell without my wand."
It had been ages since Hermione had seen such severe panic on Harry's face. These days most of the rogue Death Eaters were rounded up, and they hadn't faced a true death-defying stunt since the end of the war. With Harry being responsible for Teddy he changed his mind about becoming an Auror, instead finishing his NEWTS through a one-time test, and then deciding he was just going to live off of his vault to spend as much time as possible with Teddy until Teddy went to Hogwarts. Hermione had thought of going back, but she fell in love with Teddy just as much as Harry had, and after everything with Harry, she just couldn't leave him behind to go to school. Hermione was afraid that without her there to protect Harry that he'd get himself into danger again, but that this time he wouldn't survive it. A fear she just hadn't been able to shake. Going the same route as Harry for her NEWTs, Hermione had received all O's, Harry got mostly E's and then an O in both Transfiguration and Defense Against the Dark Arts.
Hermione realized she didn't want to go work in the Ministry, instead she started tutoring pre-Hogwarts students, as a way to still work as she worked on a book about what really led to Voldemort's defeat. She of course wasn't including the Horcruxes by name, instead mentioning Voldemort had used a magic most foul, that twisted the very fabric of his being and magic. That by the end he had not a trace of humanity left. Lily Potter was the star of the story. Her sacrifice for Harry was the butterfly that caused everything else to fall into place.
Harry didn't want any money from the book, but he did get to veto anything she put in it within reason. It was hilarious that she could make Harry read something that wasn't about Quidditch without having to nag him about it. Once it sold the two of them were planning to open a pre-Hogwarts school. It would cater more to those raised in the muggle world and be a way to ease them into Hogwarts life. They'd teach wizarding culture, do's and don'ts to follow, how to hold and write with a quill. A bit of background history on the wizarding world not covered in school. Basically, all the life skills that most pure-blood's learn from their parents to survive in the magical world.
"Tempus," Hermione whispered, she had never really gotten a hang of doing this particular wandless spell silently, she could cast other spells silently and wandless, but not Tempus. Looking at the time and date that appeared Hermione realized exactly why Harry was panicking. According to the Tempus they had somehow travelled back to July 2nd 1977 at 2:30 p.m. Hermione had never heard of anyone travelling back this far, or anyone travelling back in time without the use of a time turner, and she would know. After she got her time turner in her 3rd year, she researched everything she could about time magic. Wanting to know the risks associated with it.
"This has to be a joke right 'Mione? George has to be hiding around the corner somewhere, or maybe he doused us with a patented daydream charm, it's not possible we travelled this far back in time, right?"
Looking at the panic and tiny bit of hope in Harry's eyes, Hermione wasn't really sure what they should do. She didn't think even Draco Malfoy could do a joke this cruel to Harry. Everyone who was close to Harry, actually not even those close to him, knew how much he had always wanted to meet his parents, how he had wished that he had gotten the chance to get to know them. Hermione would hex the living daylights out of whoever did this if it is just a cruel prank. Make it so they'd regret ever making such a look cross Harry's face!
Really there is only one option here. If it is a patented daydream charm it can not mimic injuries or pain, so without explaining what she was doing to Harry, Hermione used a minor slicing charm on her hand. Watching with dread as blood welled up to the surface, dripping down her hand, and the sting that accompanied any cut followed.
"What the bloody hell Hermione!?"
Casting a minor healing charm on her hand Hermione watched as the skin stitched together to look a week old instead of fresh, healing charms take a lot more power and concentration without a wand. Concentration that she didn't really have at the moment, her mind racing as she thought of all of the possible ways travelling this far back in time could go wrong. There was no way forward in time and Hermione knew there was no way that Harry could just sit back without interfering. Merlin even without doing anything just the magic that would have sent them here would have already caused ripples, the time they knew already most likely no longer existed.
"I was checking whether it was a daydream charm Harry, but since I bled and felt pain it rules that out. Maybe it's some sort of Black Family failsafe. You are the head of the family now, maybe without any direct Black descendants it brought us back to save the line. Nothing else really makes sense. Honestly, I don't know if we'll ever figure out why we were brought back, but I do think that we've been granted a second chance.
"We're going to need to find Dumbledore, join the order, and save who we can. But we can't tell anyone when we're from Harry. If Voldemort finds out we're done for. There were so many people who died during the first war that someone other then Pettigrew might have been a spy and since they were killed no one else found out."
Hermione watched as a million thoughts flitted over Harry's face, he always did have an expressive face, she could see the pain crossing his face at the thought that they'd have to go against Voldemort again because he would still feel like it was his fight. The hope that maybe this time would end better without as much sacrifice. The pure joy that he would get the chance to meet his parents. The sorrow that they wouldn't know who he was. Many more emotions that could have a million and one reasons behind them. It was a situation that neither of them had ever expected to end up in. One that Harry might have wished for in his wildest dreams, but not something he would have ever expected to be possible.
"How are we going to get them to trust us?"
"I don't know Harry. There is just so many things that could go wrong. Not to mention that we have no history in this world. I think it's best if we come across as stepsiblings instead of best friends. With my scar we can't claim I'm anything other then muggleborn, but we're going to need a reason as to why we never went to a magic school. We can claim my mother was sick and that your father decided it was best to homeschool us to give us as much time as possible with her before she passed.
"Your story is going to have to change a bit, but other then your father surviving it can remain the same. Or we can claim we're like siblings and that your godfather married my mother instead. Still has us being raised together, without changing your parent's story. That would probably work a lot better. If things had gone to your parents plan, you would have been raised by your godfather, not those terrible people that claimed they were your family.
"It's just what you want to say about Teddy that we need to think on. It might be harder for them to believe they didn't hear of a magical couple dying with a metamorphmagus son that you just happened to adopt, instead of him just being your son and it being a magical trait that popped back up in your line. With me remaining a muggleborn we couldn't claim he's my son."
"How can you be so bloody calm?!"
"Being your best friend made it so that I've always had to think fast on my feet Harry. Right now, we need to find a way to survive. We have no money, no wands, and no reason for any of the order to trust us. All we have is each other.
"Dumbledore would at least be willing to help out a pair of struggling young adults who are raising a child. We just need to hope we don't give him any reasons to distrust us. I'm just glad without the horcrux you were able to learn occlumency. This whole situation would be a lot worst if anyone could pick through either of our heads.
"Anyway, we should start walking. We can decide on how much of our backstory we need to change on our way. I'm just glad we have each other."
"So am I 'Mione, sorry I've been such an arse."
"It's fine Harry. I just hope we make it to a town before Teddy wakes up hungry."
"I can't believe that he's still sleeping."
The town, they finally made it to hours later, was a small area barely even deserving of being called a town, but luckily the local witch had alarm wards in the vicinity. Despite their lack of wands, she had felt their magic the minute they passed her wards. She hadn't wanted to keep them in her town, claiming they'd attract trouble, so she had given them access to her floo, not even sharing her name in fear that they'd bring trouble to her doorstep. They decided to floo into the Hogshead, to make it easier to get in touch with Dumbledore. With the school term having only just ended recently they were both hopeful he'd still be at the castle, if he wasn't Aberforth would have some way to contact his brother. Even if they were still estranged it was the middle of the 1st war, they would want to make sure they had a way to check in with one another.
"Who the bloody hell are you?!" The wand in Hermione's face didn't bother her. She was just glad Aberforth had decided to give them a chance to talk instead of hexing them first. Although that might have just been because Harry was holding Teddy.
"Hello sir, I'm Hermione Evans, this is my brother Harry and his son Teddy. We're sorry for appearing out of the blue, but we came here hoping we could find Headmaster Dumbledore. This was the only open floo in Hogsmeade the witch who helped us knew of. It's not like we could directly floo into Hogwarts."
Since Hermione was in a short-sleeved shirt her mudblood scar was on full view, still looking like it had been a recent wound instead of having been healed for just over a year. The curse on Bellatrix's dagger had made it so that it would never heal fully always looking enflamed. Harry had also rolled his sleeves up to show his lack of the dark mark. It wouldn't completely eliminate suspicions that they were working for Voldemort, but it would at least show that they weren't high in the ranks. Hermione's scar would lead to many believing that they couldn't be working with the Death Eaters, although the more suspicious like Mad-Eye might believe that it was a fake out or a punishment.
With Harry and her not being blood-related in their backstory it wouldn't matter that they looked nothing alike. Even if full blood siblings could look as different as night and day if they took after different family members, there are spells and potions that could show a familial connection. They needed to think of everything, Hermione just hoped she didn't miss something obvious. Teddy needed them to find some way to survive outside of their own time.
With Harry's eyes they had decided that it was better just to use his mother's maiden name. They didn't need to claim they were close relatives of Lily, but his green eyes were so unique that it just seemed like a distant relation to his mother would be better. Besides Evans is quite a common last name in England, so it wouldn't seem out of the realm of possibility that Lily had an unknown family member, even if she was the first magical member of her family in generations. They'd have to be careful to not act like they knew anything about Lily. It would seem odd if they knew of her and she didn't know of them.
There was of course always the chance that people would realize that he looked like a Potter, but they were hoping that his eyes and the name Evans would work as a fake out. Kind of like how Clark Kent was never recognized as Superman, hiding in plain sight with only changing a very minor detail of his outward appearance. If they could Hermione would have tried to get Harry contacts, the glasses making him look even more like his father, but at this time they just didn't have a way to be able to get him contacts.
"Sit down then, I'll call the old fool down, drink?" He looked suspicious still, but he didn't have his wand trained on them anymore.
"We don't have any galleons on us, sorry."
His eyes went a little softer at that, taking in the scar on Hermione's arm again, and the fact that Harry and she were still quite skinny. Unlike Ron they didn't really bounce back easily from their year on the run, Harry had always struggled with malnutrition because of the Dursleys, and Hermione had just been so full of grief it had been hard to stomach anything. Although she thought that the main thing that made him soft was Teddy. He could see that the little boy was a healthy weight, even if neither of them were, most likely assuming the completely wrong reasons as to why they weren't healthy, but Teddy was.
Writing something on a parchment he whistled for an owl, tying the letter onto its leg. It wouldn't surprise Hermione if all he sent to his brother was a letter saying, 'Hogshead Now.' Once the owl was out of the way he went out of sight into the back room of the bar, they were currently his only customers, but she was still shocked that he left them alone even if it was only for a moment. It was even more surprising when he came back out with a transfigured bottle full of milk, two glasses of water, three plates of food, two with sandwiches, the third with some mashed potatoes and gravy.
"It's not much, but I don't really have much suitable for a boy of that age on hand. Eat, Albus will come when he has a chance."
Even if they knew Aberforth quite well, he didn't know that, so Hermione made a show of waving her hand over the items, letting a relieved look come on her face when they all shined blue. It was just a common revealing charm for poisons or potions, but it brought a look of respect onto Aberforth's face. He didn't even seem shocked to see a witch of Hermione's age performing wandless magic.
"Can't be too careful with the current situation out there," she told him letting defensiveness color her voice. "Especially not when we need to keep Teddy safe. Thank you for the food."
"You both look like a strong wind would blow you over."
"We're stronger than we look," Harry snapped. The stress was clearly starting to get to him. Probably worrying if they would be able to find a way to be able to take care of Teddy properly, Harry couldn't stand it if he couldn't give Teddy the life he deserved.
"Harry be nice, you should wake Teddy. He's been sleeping for a while he needs to eat. It's been a long journey." A lot longer than anyone other then they would ever know.
Harry pouted at her, he always did hate when Hermione mothered him, but they needed to be on their best behaviour. No one in this time has any reason to trust them, and it's not like they can live on the run with Teddy, especially not when they had no supplies or money to start with.
Giving her a look to convey he wasn't happy, he gently shook Teddy awake, the little boy's hair flashing green as he stirred. "Teddy cub it's time to wake up, you need to eat buddy." It's always astonishing to hear how soft Harry gets when he speaks to Teddy. Hermione's best friend had always been slow to open up to people, but he's an amazing godfather and adoptive father to Teddy. Treating the little boy, the way he wished he had been treated growing up. Remus and Tonks couldn't have made a better choice for their son's godfather.
At first Harry had tried to teach Teddy to say his name instead of dada, but Andromeda had told him if he could see Teddy as a son Remus and Tonks would be happy if he became Teddy's dad. All they would have wanted for their son was for him to grow up safe and loved. So, Teddy called Harry dada, and Hermione was Min, he was just too young to be able to say her name. At least being his Auntie Min was better then being called 'Mione.
"Dada, Min, were Re?" he asked rubbing his eyes looking around for Kreacher. The grouchy old elf really did love the little boy. Warming up to his young master Teddy more then Hermione had thought was possible.
"Re's far away cub, we had to leave home. It's just Min, you, and me now. Would you like some mashed potatoes first or your milk?"
"Taoes pwease. Tank you."
Seeing that Harry had Teddy in hand Hermione started on her sandwich, glad to have something to eat, the walk really had drained her. Hermione was just glad Teddy was so young that he's not too articulate yet, it would be disastrous if he said something about their time, especially if he had been a bit older, but at his age, people might just think he's saying something similar or someone. The only big problem people wise would be if we ran into Molly and Arthur, they were the only adults in this time that Teddy would recognize and use names for. Hopefully with them being so much younger he wouldn't be able to recognize them before they're formally introduced to him.
"Abe you really need to stop sending me cryptic messages. You know it drives me crazy with worry." The familiar voice of Albus Dumbledore made Hermione want to cry. All she could see for a moment was his body crumbled at the bottom of the Astronomy tower, it was odd to think that he was alive and whole once again. From the half-strangled noise Harry made she was certain he was thinking of the same thing.
"Albus, these kids wished to speak with you." With that short sentence Aberforth turned away to wiping down the bar counter, clearly indicating that he wouldn't speak with his brother anymore then that.
"Headmaster Dumbledore I'm Hermione Evans, this is my adopted brother Harry and his son Teddy. We're kind of in a bind and were hoping you could help us. We were raised completely in the muggle world by Harry's godfather Sean Culvert and my mother Agatha De Bois, my mother was a muggle, but Harry's godfather was a wizard and he homeschooled us. I ended up magically adopted Harry's name in a sibling ritual we did when we were 13, sorry not the point, Sean was recently killed in a fire, we lost everything, and due to the suspicious nature of his death the muggle authorities won't release Harry's inheritance. We've never been in the magical world before, but with the odd magical things happening in the muggle world we aren't safe there. We were hoping you could help us."
Dumbledore's gaze was sharp and cold and for a moment Hermione was afraid that he'd turn them away. That they'd have to find some other way to keep Teddy safe. Especially since he'd look into their story and not find any links that they were who they said they were. Their backstory couldn't be proved, but they had to say something to explain why they had no history at all in the magical world, they could only hope that Dumbledore believed they didn't tell him the true story because they didn't trust him.
"I don't recognize the name Culvert. Why would you come to me?"
"I don't believe Culvert was Sean's real name. He was always very protective of Harry and didn't want us in the magical world, but he said if anything ever happened to him that we should go to you for help. That you were the type to help anyone, of course he told us that when we were still young enough to be attending Hogwarts. We only want to keep Teddy safe."
"Have you done your NEWTS?"
"No sir, I'm 20 and Harry is 19, but Sean didn't want us in the magical world even long enough to complete them, he didn't want us to have any records here, he'd never explain why."
"I have a friend in the department of education who can allow you to take your NEWTS, it would be swiftly, and depending on the results I can help you both find work. Until then I know of someone who would be willing to take you in for the time being."
Most likely who ever was going to take them in would be evaluating them and seeing if they were a threat. Honestly, Hermione was just happy Dumbledore is willing to help them, especially considering the current situation within the Wizarding World. NEWTs will be no problem for her no matter if she took them tomorrow, and Harry should do well enough to at least get a decent job. Even if he would be sad that he couldn't spend all of his time with Teddy now.
"Thank you sir, the only problem is that we lost our wands in the fire, and even if we are somewhat proficient in wandless magic it isn't enough to be able to take our NEWTS if the horror stories Sean told us were true." She hated that she had to rely on someone else so much even if it was Dumbledore.
"Consider it an advance, you can pay me back when you can. Focus on getting yourselves financially stable first. Times are too dangerous for a grown witch and wizard to be without their wands. Especially when you have such a young child to protect.
"For tonight you can stay in the castle, the students have gone home for the summer, and I'll need a bit of time to arrange your stay with my friend. We can arrange to go to Ollivanders in the morning to get your wands."
Let's just hope they'd be able to keep their cover. Maybe they could find the peace they had lost in the future here in 1977.
AN: Cross Posted on my AO3, started at beginning of month just wanted a few chapters before uploading. Obviously I don't Own Harry Potter, just this story.
