Kim quickly grabbed her suit and shoes that she had laid out for court in the morning and placed in a gym bag and ran to the hospital. She knew there was no chance she was going to have time to run home before court so she was going to just get ready at the hospital.

When she returned, she wasn't all that surprised to find Adam asleep. Dr. Rhodes did say he wasn't awake long but she hoped if he woke up again, at least this time she would be there.

She placed her gym bag down and pulled up her chair next to Adam and gently grabbed his hand, letting him know she was there. She hoped by contact and talking to him, that he might open his eyes again, but she couldn't get that lucky.

Dr. Rhodes appeared not long after Kim arrived. The front desk had told him she was there and he wanted a chance to talk to her before his shift ended. "That didn't take long." Conner joked, impressed with how quick Kim made it to the hospital after hanging up with him.

"I wanted to be here in case he wakes up again. I feel terrible I wasn't here the first time." Kim explained.

"Don't feel bad. I'm sure he would understand you not being here 24/7. It's not like anyone knew when he was going to wake."

"I still should have been here." Kim was being extra hard on herself knowing Adam was already unhappy with her. She just hoped he understood why she wasn't there.

"Don't beat yourself up Kim. Like I said, he was still really out of it. I tried asking him a few questions but got nothing back in return. It might take him waking up a few times to really start putting things together."

Kim nodded and thanked Dr. Rhodes. She rested her head on the side of Adams bed while still holding his hand, and fell back asleep. It wasn't until her alarm went off at 6 am that she woke up again. Unfortunately for her, she had left her phone in her purse on the other side of the room and had to dig through it to turn the alarm off. She thought about resetting the alarm for 6:30 to try to get a few more minutes of sleep but when she turned around she noticed Adam's eyes were open. "Adam?" She hurried back over to the right side of the bed. His eyes following her the whole way. She pushed a few strands of hair out of his face and kissed him on the forehead. "I missed you so much! You have no idea!"

Adam kept his eyes on her the whole time as she rambled on, but didn't say a word. She seemed to be talking a mile a minute and he was having a hard time keeping up with her. To be fair, she could have been talking extremely slow and he would still be having a hard time. His head felt so heavy and every inch of his body felt like it was in pain. He had no idea what happened or why everything hurt, but right now he just didn't have the energy to ask. He was about to drift back to sleep when he was finally able to understand one thing Kim asked: "Are you in pain?"

If he could laugh, he would have. Of course he was in pain. He thought about opening his mouth to say yes, but his jaw and throat were killing him so he just settled for a slow nod.

"I'll get Dr. Rhodes and see if he can get you anything." She pressed the call button on Adam's bed and waited for Dr. Rhodes. Instead, a young nurse entered the room. "Mr. Ruzek, good to see you awake."

Adam wanted to cringe. He hated being called Mr. Ruzek.

"Can you give him anything for the pain?" Kim asked.

The nurse looked over Adam's charts. "He's just about maxed out on pain meds, but I can give him a little something."

"He'd appreciate that." Kim stated.

After the nurse administered the pain meds, it didn't take long for Adam to start losing the battle with sleep. Before he did though, Kim wanted to make sure he understood why she was leaving in case he woke up again and she wasn't there. "Hey." She said softly. "I know you're tired, but I have court at 8 am. I don't know how long it'll take, but I promise I'll be back as soon as it's over, ok?"

Adam just slowly nodded again and dozed back off.

Kim was glad she was able to talk to Adam before court. It made her feel better seeing him awake and she was able to relax a little before the court hearing. She was completely exhausted and prayed she wouldn't be stuck in the courthouse all day, but the lack of sleep was worth it to be able to talk to Adam.

On her way to the courthouse, she sent out a group text to the team letting them know Adam had woken up. She also texted Adams sister to giver the update and decided to let her decide if she wanted to tell Bob or not.

The court hearing was taking longer than she would have liked but things seemed to be going her way. It was 1:00 by the time she finally got out of there and she headed straight to the hospital. When she returned to the hospital, she was surprised to see Bob sitting in the room with Adam. "Bob." She nodded, not wanting to say hello.

Bob turned around at the sound of her voice and returned the hello. "Kim."

"Nice to see you finally show up." She knew it was a bit harsh, but she was pretty annoyed that after almost three weeks, this was the first time he decided to visit his son.

"That's not fair and you know it." He pointed at Kim. "I've had a lot on my plate."

Kim wanted to argue, but this wasn't the time nor the place. "I think you should go."

"I think you're right." Bob headed for the door but turned around before walking through it. "But for the record, I DO love my son."

Kim didn't even acknowledge him. She just wanted to focus on Adam.

It didn't take long for her to fall asleep after Bob left. She had had a long day and didn't get much sleep. When she woke back up, Kevin was sitting in the chair on the other side of Adam's bed, scrolling through his phone.

"Hey Kev, I didn't even here you come in." Kim was surprised. She was usually a very light sleeper.

"I tried to be quiet, knew you had a long day. How's he doing?"

Kim shrugged. "Better I guess. I talked to him a little bit this morning before court which was nice. I just wish he could actually hold a conversation."

"He'll get there. Give him a few days. He did just wake up." Kevin reminded her.

"I know." Kim smiled. "I was just so worried about him. I am still worried about him."

"That's normal. We're all worried about him still. Hell, even when he's not in the the hospital I'm worried about him." Kevin tried to joke to lighten the mood a little, which seemingly worked considering the smile that appeared on Kims face.

It took two more days for Adam to feel well enough to hold his first conversation since the accident. His jaw and cheek were still in a bit of pain and although his throat was still a bit raw from being intubated for so long, he finally felt well enough to talk.

"Kim." His voice was low and hoarse, but no doubt his. Kims eyes shot up at the sound of her name. He had woken up a few times over the last few days, but never long enough to hold a conversation. When he was with it enough, she could usually get a nod or something out of him, but most of the time it seemed like she was talking to a wall.

"Adam. Oh my god. It's ok baby." Even though she really had no idea where their relationship currently stood, she instinctively called him baby. She had no idea if Adam even remembered her basically accusing him of murder but right now, none of that mattered. She was gonna be there for him until he pushed her away and she prayed like hell he wouldn't.

"Wha- What happened?" He rasped out.

"Car accident. Almost 4 weeks ago." Kim informed him. "You were in a coma for almost three weeks. Intubated for 18 of them, that's why your throat is sore." She grabbed a cup of water with a straw and held it in front of him. "Here, see if this helps."

Adam took two small sips and winced as he swallowed. "This sucks."

"I know, but believe it or not, you're actually doing a lot better. You should have seen yourself when you first came in."

"How bad?"

"It was bad. We didn't think you were gonna make it. It's kind of a miracle that you did." Kim admitted. She hated thinking back to the day of the accident and how broken he was.

"Feels like- like I shouldnt've- made it."

"Are you in pain?" Kim asked. She had hoped the pain meds were doing their job enough to mask his pain.

Adam scoffed, then instantly regretted it as pain tore through his body. "Yea."

"I'll call Will. He'll probably want to see you awake and talking anyway." Kim pushed the call button on the bed and waited.

It took about 3 minutes for Will to entered the room and he smiled as he did so. This wasn't the first time he'd seen Adam awake, but it was the first time he heard him talk. "Hey Will."

"Look who's talking." Will smiled. Glad to hear Adams voice again even though it sounded nothing like the Adam he knew.

Adam just half smiled. The pain was growing the more he talked, but he knew Will was gonna have some questions for him.

"Mind if I ask you a few quick questions?" Will asked.

Adam slowly shook his head no.

"Ok great. Are you in any pain?"

Adam nodded. He didn't mind these yes or no questions so much.

"On a scale of 1-10, how bad is it?"

He didn't even have the energy left to joke, because if he did he definitely would have said about 15, but instead he settled for a solid "10."

Will nodded and looked through the charts. He was still maxed out on pain meds but he was just about due for his next dose so Will explained to him that after he was done, he would administer them a few minutes early. After, he continued his questions. "Do you know what happened?"

Adam nodded hoping it would be enough, but when Will remained silent he realized he was waiting for a verbal answer. He looked over to Kim before returning his gaze to Will. "Car accident."

Will felt terrible for all the questions. He could tell with each word that Adam spoke, that his throat was hurting worse, but he had to get through the list. He looked over at Kim the back to Adam. "Do you remember it? Or did Kim tell you?"

"Kim." Was the only response Adam gave.

Will nodded. He wasn't entirely surprised. "Do you remember the accident at all?"

Adam thought for a few seconds before shaking his head no.

"Ok." Will stated. "One last question. What is the last thing you remember?"

Kim winced a bit at the question. She had no idea what Adam was going to say and she wasn't entirely thrilled with the question but knew Will had to ask it. She just hoped making Adam think about the last thing he remembered didn't end with their fight.

Adam thought hard for a few more seconds, but couldn't remember much. He tried to shrug his shoulders, not realizing the pain it would cause. He gasped as another shot of pain tore through his upper body.

"Easy bud. Try not to move too much. You still got a lot of healing left to do. Just try to think for me. What is the last thing you remember?" Will ushered.

Adam did his best to catch his breath after the pain took it away. Once he did he looked over at Kim, who had a worried look on her face. "Driving to work?" It was said as more of a question but the last thing he could think of right now was being in the car with Kim. He just assumed it was on their way into work.

Kim let out a breath she didn't even realize she was holding. She knew Adam would eventually remember as his brain continued to heal, but he was still so fragile right now and didn't need the extra weight on his mind. All he needed to focus on right now was getting better. She wanted to be the one to bring it up to him first. She didn't want him to remember and think she was taking advantage of his memory loss when that is the furthest thing from what she was doing. The hard part was going to be figuring out when to bring it up.

"Ok. Good. That's good." Will wasn't entirely thrilled with the response knowing a whole day's events had taken place, but he was happy enough to end the questions. He didn't expect Adam to remember everything right away. "Give me a few more minutes and I'll send the nurse in for your next round of pain meds. It's really good to hear you talking again. I promise it'll get easier in the next few days."

With that Will smiled and left the room leaving Kim and Adam alone. She smiled and gently brushed the hair out of his face. He was definitely due for a hair cut and she would sure he got one as soon as he was up for it. "Why don't you get some more rest? I know that was exhausting. The nurse should be in any second with the pain meds."

As if on cue, the nurse walked in, had a short conversation with Kim and administered the meds. It didn't take long after that for Adam to quit fighting sleep and give in to the darkness.
