Lull and Storm

It always baffled people when Toph said that she loved thunderstorms. "That violent ones," she once mentioned. "The ones that make others run for their life because the lightning comes down every four seconds and the thunder makes the windows rattle in their frames. I love those storms."

"Why?" Katara asked her one time. "Why would you like to go outside just to be in a storm that horrible?"

Toph had simply smiled and closed her eyes. "I like the feel of the vibrations under my feet and all around me. When the lightning strikes down it causes thunder, and the thunder makes everything move- the ground, the houses, the carts on the side of the road."

"And you like that?"

"Yes, I do. It's exhilarating and calm all at once."

"Calm?"

"The sound of the rain falling and hitting the earth and everything on it below. It's relaxing."

"I can understand," she heard Katara whisper.

"Exactly why I described it like that."

She felt Katara's eyes on her and her footsteps retreating. Lightning crashed down and thunder shook the earth, causing Toph to smile.

"Oh yes, the best ones there is are the ones that I can feel."
