Title: And So He Passes
Rating: PG / K+ - the topic's too advanced for little chidders. Not that there are any little chidders who ought to watch RENT.
Genre: Angst… kind of. But in a way, it isn't, really. Ergo, it's general / angst
Summary: postRENT It has been a long time, but Mark finally smiles, in the end. written for Challenge 12
A/N: This is the challenge: "Has to be Markcentric. Doesn't matter who else is in it and what relationships are, you choose. You must use this line Mark grinned. For the first time, in a long time, he felt happy, truly happy. You can use it anyway you wish."
So, I did use it the way I wished. I mixed the line up a bit, changed it to present tense and also changed the language a bit. The line is in here.. just… altered. It doesn't say you can't alter. You must use this line, yes. But you can also use it any way you wish. BUAHAHAH!
So.. umm… Here is the result. Enjoy?
Story:
It has been a long time. A very long time since…
Since what?
Many things. Since he was born. Since he grew. Since he got his first camera. Since he became a bohemian. Since his friends all died. Since he met the woman who became his wife. Since they married. Since they had children. Since the children grew up. Since the children had children. Since his wife died. Since the children and the grandchildren moved far away.
Since he has been happy.
But, for the first time in long time, a very long time, he felt, feels happy, truly happy.
And for the last time, while shuffling along this mortal coil, he grins.
Yes, that's right. Mark grins. His last grin, and, in a way, his best, despite the fact that his cheeks are sunken, his skin is even more pallid than usual, his hair (what's left of it) is white, his eyes are sunken and he is more wrinkled than a raisin. It is his best, despite the age and sickliness of himself, because his eyes are at their brightest, now. Those blue depths are alight with peace, tranquility, and pleasure. Happiness that this is the end. That he can stop being the one to survive and go join his friends and his beloved wife wherever they may be. Happiness because in the end, he is satisfied with life and death.
And so he passes on. And so he dies… Lying there, breathing in and out… in and out.. .in… and out, and it is done, and he's smiling peacefully. Grinning, because for the first time in a very long time, he is happy, truly happy.
