Chapter 3: A cover is not the book, and Hogwarts is not a normal school (Mary Poppins Returns)

He said a Cover is not the book So open it up and take a look 'Cause under the covers one discovers That the king may be a crook Chapter titles are like signs And if you read between the lines You'll find your first impression was mistook For a cover is nice But a cover is not the book

Harry, Draco, and a girl named Hermione Granger arrived at Hogwarts in a boat together. Even though, according to Draco, Hermione wasn't pureblooded, she made up for it in enough ways that she would be a great friend and ally. When they reached the doors to the great hall, an old witch came up. She was dressed in emerald green robes and a hat to match.

"I am Minerva McGonagall, deputy headmistress, head of Gryffindor and transfiguration professor. In a few minutes you will follow me into the great hall and line up at the front. I will call out your name and you will then be sorted into your house. There is Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Once sorted you will sit at your house table. Your robes will change to the color of your house. Just simply find the table with the same colors." She then turned and led them into the hall.

""Harry had never even imagined such a strange and splendid place. It was lit by thousands and thousands of candles that were floating in midair over four long tables, where the rest of the students were sitting. These tables were laid with glittering golden plates and goblets. At the top of the hall was another long table where the teachers were sitting. Professor McGonagall led the first years up here, so that they came to a halt in a line facing the other students, with the teachers behind them. The hundreds of faces staring at them looked like pale lanterns in the flickering candle light.

Harry looked upward and saw a velvety black ceiling dotted with stars. He heard Hermione whisper, "It's bewitched to look like the sky outside. I read about it in Hogwarts, A History."

It was hard to believe there was a ceiling there at all, and that the Great Hall didn't simply open on to the heavens.""

(A/N:Part in double quotes from actual book by JKR, not mine)

McGonagall set down a stool and a ratty brown witches hat on top of it. Then the hat started to sing.

Oh, you may not think I'm pretty,

But don't judge on what you see,

I'll eat myself if you can find

A smarter hat than me.

You can keep your bowlers black,

Your top hats sleek and tall,

For I'm the Hogwarts Sorting Hat

And I can cap them all.

There's nothing hidden in your head

The Sorting Hat can't see,

So try me on and I will tell you

Where you ought to be.

You might belong in Gryffindor,

Where dwell the brave at heart,

Their daring, nerve and chivalry

Set Gryffindors apart;

You might belong in Hufflepuff,

Where they are just and loyal,

Those patient Hufflepuffs are true

And unafraid of toil;

Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,

If you've a ready mind,

Where those of wit and learning,

Will always find their kind;

Or perhaps in Slytherin

You'll make your real friends,

Those cunning folk use any means

To achieve their ends.

So put me on! Don't be afraid!

And don't get in a flap!

You're in safe hands (though I have none)

For I'm a Thinking Cap!

The students at the tables applauded politely as McGonagall shook open a long scroll.

"Hannah Abbot" - - - "Hufflepuff!"

"Tracy Andrews" - - - "Gryffindor!"

And it continued on like that for a while. Draco, who was standing next to Harry, leaned over and whispered, "If you want to avoid the weasel, he will be in Gryffindor. I will be going to Slytherin. Hermione will most likely go to Ravenclaw, but you don't seem like someone to go there. Then there is hufflepuff. I can't say much about them, except that they are very obedient."

"Hermione Granger" - - - "hmmm, Ravenclaw!"

"Told you." Draco whispered.

"Neville Longbottom" - - - "Hufflepuff!"

"Draco Malfoy " - - - "Slytherin!" The hat had barely touched his head. Draco just simply sauntered over to the table and sat down like he owned the place. (which in retrospect he probably could. . .)

"Pansy Parkinson" - - - "Ravenclaw!"

"Oh thank Merlin, I thought I was gonna get stuck with her for 7 years." Draco Stage Whispered. Pansy sent him a glare as she made her way to the Ravenclaw table. Draco just snickered behind his hand. So did Harry.

"Harry Potter"

Harry walked up to the little three legged stool and sat down. The hat was placed in his head, and suddenly someone was talking to him. The hat, he assumed.

'Ahh, Mr. Potter, I've been expecting you.

Now let's see here, couldn't be a Gryffindor for though you are brave and loyal as can be, you are not brash or chivalrous like others in the house of thee.

Not a Hufflepuff for though loyal you may be, and kind tis true, that group and it's goals are just not right for you.

Now Ravenclaw could be one, as brains you've got, but the need to learn you have not.

And finally Slytherin stands right out, as ambition and the need to prove yourself are strong, and in this house you could go far but possibly wrong.

I think we will just have to go with the house that truly fits, the choices you make are up to you once you're in, so without further ado, it better be' "Slytherin!"

The applause for the slytherins was thunderous. Everyone knew that whoever had Harry Potter would surely be seen as the best house.

Harry walked over and sat next to Draco, who smiled warmly at him, secretly relieved he had gotten the Boy-Who-Lived as a friend and the Weasel hadn't. He hoped that this school - that would probably be like a new open book for Harry - would be just the place for him and his new friend.

might not update for a while, sorry!
