Chapter 13
He lay next to her gently stroking her chin with his finger. Her breathing was gentle and calm as she slept soundly in his arms. Their night of passion had been better than he had ever imagined, but now just watching sleep was more than he could have ever wished for. Erik's eyes kept drifting down to Christine's stomach. A child, his child was growing inside of his precious angel. He was terrified, but Christine's words had reassured him that they would somehow make it through this and that his child would grow loved as he never was.
He knew that this moment would never be matched and he would cherish it forever. Everything he had suffered through was made right and everything he had lost in his life he suddenly found that night lying next to Christine. He closed his eyes with a smile on his lips and love for his child and his angle in his heart.
They woke with a start as someone pounded on the door. "Christine this crazy! You haven't left your room in days. Come out and have lunch with me."
Christine's heart skipped a beat as she heard Raoul's voice on the other side of the door. She had forgotten that he was even on the boat. Erik was staring coldly at the door. She knew that she had to go and face Raoul at some point, but Erik's temper was not to be toyed with.
"Erik I have to go with him. He doesn't know that you are here and he finds out or finds out about the baby..." she didn't know what else to say. They both that she had no choice in the matter and Erik would just have to grit his teeth and bare it.
"Tell him you will meet him for lunch. I'll be here when you return." Erik gave a heavy sigh as Christine informed Raoul that she would be down in twenty minutes. She quickly washed up and began putting on a cream colored dress with white lace around the neckline and sleeves.
"Erik would you help with my corset? I just need you to lace it up."
"You can't be serious Christine. Why are you going to wear thing?"
"What's wrong? I have to wear it."
"It will hurt the baby." He looked at her shocked that she would risk injuring the child.
"I don't think I am far enough along to have to worry about that just yet. If it really bothers you don't tie it tightly, but I have to wear it."
He stared at her for a moment and then realized that she would know better than he would and they couldn't risk Raoul asking questions and getting suspicious. He did up the back and tied it as loosely as he could without it falling free from her body. 'If we were home she wouldn't have to worry about this.' he thought, but then again where was home for them?
Suddenly the thought of returning to Paris hit him. Where would they live when the baby was born? The caves beneath the opera house were no place for a child as he well knew much less for a baby. He would have to find a proper home for his new family, but what if she had no intention on living with him? And if they were living together wouldn't that mean they should get married? His mind began to swell with thoughts.
"Erik? Erik I'm going to leave now and I'll be back within an hour or so. Are you alright?" Christine noticed how quiet Erik had become all of a sudden. "If you are mad about the corset, by the time we get back to Paris I'll be able to buy larger ones that won't hurt the baby."
"No it's not that Dear, it's just...nothing. I was thinking and got distracted. You had better hurry before that brat comes back." She smiled up at him and kissed him on the cheek before rushing out the door.
