Chapter 20

It stung as it entered his body. A slight burning sensation, but at the same time he went numb. He tried to gasp for air, but it all got caught in his throat. The blood hit the air as it leaked from his dying body. Raoul dropped to his knees and slowly turned to look toward where the shot had been fired. He saw his brother standing there with the steaming gun in his hand. His own brother had shot him in the back and for what? All three of them were now on the brink of death. Christine may already be dead with that disgusting creature fast approaching his end. Raoul turns away from his brother staring at the floor, but seeing nothing. His final thought is of that day by the shore with Christine his Little Lotte.

Christophe stay still, unable to comprehend what he just did. He had killed his brother, but even worse he had shot him in the back. He suddenly lurched forward and threw up the bile that had settled in his stomach. Why had he done that? How could he have killed his younger brother? It was a cruel and truly grisly scene within the bedroom. A couple lay unclothed and unconscious in their bed. They both have bruises and various injuries and their skin is turning blue. As for his brother, he lay in a pool of crimson blood beside the bed. Eyes wide open and mouth a gape with even more blood spilling out. Christophe threw up again.

It took police no time at all to arrive and a doctor had been found along the way. At first they were prepared to dispose of the bodies, but soon they realized the small amount of life remaining.

"I don't know why he came here to kill them. My brother was obviously unwell and I couldn't just let him . . . oh God!" Christophe's voice cracked as he saw his brother's body being carried down the steps. The officer he had been talking to went over to the door to close it, but the doctor suddenly appeared in the doorway.

"Will they be all right?" Meg Giry frantically asked the rather pale looking doctor.

The Giry's had been informed and they immediately rushed over to the house. Along with Christophe they were ushered into the livingroom by the police and told to remain there. That had been two hours ago. Meg cried loudly as her mother sat still in a state of shock and Christophe only rocked back in forth as more question were thrown at him. He kept rubbing his hands and begging to be allowed to wash them. Repeatedly he was told "no" for there was nothing on his hands, but he insisted they were stained and needed to be cleaned.

The doctor appeared in the doorway taking in the chaos of the room and all of the different emotions that coursed through it. The night had been overwhelming even for him, but he had to stay calm for the family's sake. The girl runs up to him with a tear soaked face and her pretty blue eyes are blood shot. She is practically screaming at him to know if the young couple he had found barely alive were all right. It broke his heart to see her mother quickly stand up and strike her across the face and then scold her for being so emotional. Then the older woman turns to him with dark and weary eyes.

"Will they live?" she calmly asks with only a hint of pain in her voice.

"I believe so, yes." The doctor replies. He was beginning to feel overwhelmed by the whole situation. Saving the young couples lives had not been easy, but he had done it. For that he was grateful, but he had failed in one thing. He had not realized the young lady was with child, though it probably was already too late for it anyway, he still felt very responsible for its death. It was the first child he had ever lost in all of his years practicing and hurt him deeply. He could barely even bring himself to say it.

"Doctor are you all right?" The woman was still standing in front of him with a blank expression on her face. "It is the child isn't it?"

"Yes, I'm afraid so." He managed to choke out before retreating from the room unable to handle another moment in the house that was now stained and reeked with death.
