|Chapter One| eyes on fire
The piddle, paddle of the rain hitting against the roof of the building I was in, and strong winds rattling the windows, was heightened in my ears.
It hurt but it wasn't anywhere close to the intense burning that was radiating throughout my body, underneath my skin. I wanted to open my mouth and cry out in pain, but my mouth was almost sewn shut. No matter how much I wanted to thrash on whatever surface I was upon I could not. I could tell I was lying on soft fabric, now that I could focus on it.
Yes, I was on a bed but the top cover on the bed was a soft cotton bedspread.
I liked to imagine it was purple, one of my favorite colors.
A pretty shade of purple and none of those gaudy colors that girls would always like, like fuchsia. I liked the simple dark purple. A color that was used and was popular but didn't have to make a loud statement unless the person demanded that the color be used in a statement piece.
"She's about to wake up. I didn't imagine it would only take two days, this is the first time that I've heard about this happening."
Alice.
I tried to think of the beautiful, perky and bubbly girl with artistic Ravenette hair that went in all different directions. She was short, painfully short along with her weight. She must have suffered from an eating disorder in the past and once she had become adopted by Esme and Carlisle she had a family that she wanted to work harder on being healthier. She always wore glamorous clothes, which she wore only once and then her clothes disappeared never to be seen on her again (the same went for her family members, she was the one in charge of the clothes in the family).
"Three. Two. One."
Then my crimson irises opened and I was caught with how everything seemed enhanced.
The bluish tint around me in the bedroom I was currently in had silhouettes of the clouds moving by against the light blue walls and the rain drops.
The room was nicer than an average bedroom, the crown molding around the walls was a crisp egg shell white. There were exquisite paintings that were hanging upon the walls that had simple initials of the artists in the bottom right of the paintings, the initials didn't help me be able to pinpoint the artist to be honest. The floor was top-of-the-line carpet that was stain proof in case anyone dropped anything upon the soft gray carpet. There was a peaked ceiling above me with a ceiling fan on, a soft humming coming from it while the blades of the ceiling fan went around in an endless circle.
I barely noticed any of this because the panic set in, and I brought my hand up to my throat, where it was burning like someone doused the inside of my throat in whisky and set it aflame. I sat upright fast, faster than any human could, and felt the bed break underneath me. It crashed to the carpet and broke into splinters when it came to the bed frame but the mattress was lucky.
"W-"
I brought my hand up and pressed it against my throat, flinching from the immediate burn that hit me fiercely. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath only to flinch again at the intense reaction I had received, muttering,"bad idea, bad idea."
"Where am I? What's happening?"
I slowly opened my eyes again, having been caught in my own maelstrom of emotions that I hadn't noticed the entire Cullen family was in the doorway of the bedroom except for Edward.
Alice with her concern and her boyfriend/foster brother, Jasper Hale, stood in front of her with a clenched jaw. His canary curls cascaded against his collarbones and he was quite muscular, lean, but his skin was peppered with bite marks. So many bite marks that it was quite concerning now that I was looking at them.
He was dressed in a low maintenance manner, clothes that he could easily throw into the washing machine when they got too dirty, and cowboy boots that still had mud dried and crusted to the soles of his boots. If I knew all about dirt I would have been able to say what type of mud it was but I wasn't someone who cared about the environment like that.
The thing that surprised me was the fact that his eyes weren't as dark as I was accustomed to seeing for the two months that I had been in Forks. He always looked as though he was in pain and right now he did seem as though he was irritated in a thirsty manner but not as though he was wanting to eat me like he did whenever I would be in his presence in the high school cafeteria. I didn't know how to feel about it to be honest.
My eyes went away from the couple to the other teenage couple in the room.
Jasper's so called twin, Rosalie, with her long blonde waves that cascaded down her back. She was quite curvy, and reminded me of a lingerie model posing upon a velvet futon. She was dressed in clothes that stuck to her like second skin, in order to draw attention to her figure and her beauty more than anything else. Her arms were folded in front of her chest, the gray cashmere sweater just making her blonde hair even more stunning, along with her golden irises that were framed in thick eyelashes and lined with expensive eyeliner.
Emmett Cullen, the last high school senior in the family, and boyfriend/foster brother of Rosalie. He was quite thick and muscular, his bluish-white pale muscles straining as he had his arms folded against his chest. He had one of his feet tapping against the carpet, sending out little thuds that honestly was giving me a headache. He was dressed in very casual, athletic clothes as though he had just arrived here after a long jog from wherever-the-hell we were.
Carlisle Cullen, the residential doctor in Forks, stood the closest to me with concern lacing his Apollo like features.
He was of marble on the outside, with skin cold like the rest of his family members, and large golden irises that were peering into my crimson eyes with concern.
He was dressed in one of his oxford white button up shirts (I was certain that he must have many of these shirts), dark dress pants, and dress shoes. A silver watch was upon his left arm, where it showed the current time but the headache and hunger that consumed me made me not care to see what time it was. His golden hair was perfect when it came to how evenly it was brushed upon his head, combed down so it wasn't in a wild mess upon his head.
Esme Cullen, the antique restorer for many historical houses, was the height of an average woman and was thick around the waist. She was a bigger woman, and her carmel hair fell in soft curls against her shoulder blades. Her golden irises and light pink lips held nothing more than concern just like her husband. Her head was heart shaped and she wore a cream spring knee high dress with long sleeves and a navy blue wool cardigan jacket over it that must have cost as much as the designer carpet that was under the soles of her navy blue flats.
"E-Edward? Edward!"
I didn't know why I was calling his name, perhaps it was because he was one of the last memories I had before I had woken up like this. I knew there was blood and we were in his meadow, but everything was kind of fuzzy. It was as though I was trying to get a proper signal from an old radio, despite the fact that everyone claimed it was beyond use. I was determined to find the right station no matter how long I would have to sit down and fiddle with the dial on the radio.
Carlisle gave one look at Esme and she nodded her head before she ushered their children out of the room, which in return made Alice give me one last look as though she hoped that things would be better. She walked out and the door shut behind her but it wasn't locked. They were letting me know that I wasn't being held prisoner, and I could leave after they informed me of what had happened.
Carlisle and Esme slowly made their way towards me and I curled in on myself, my arms wrapping around my legs as I peered at them wearily. The burning in my throat was suffocating to me but they had so much concern in their golden irises that it was almost soothing to a point. Key word, almost. I still had enough worry and paranoia over everything that had just happened.
"Bella, I know that we didn't get a chance to meet before, but I'm Esme. I'm Carlisle's wife. I know that you're feeling confused and scared right now. Can you tell me what's the last thing you remember before you woke up here?"
I closed my eyes and tried to focus on what had happened before I woke up.
I could only remember how I was going through the woods with Edward because he said he wanted to show me something, and I had gone with him since we had just slowly started dating each other. We arrived on the outskirts of a meadow and he entered…I fell and there was blood. Then there were golden eyes turned dark, teeth sunk into my skin and then the pain and trauma overtook me enough I fell into unconsciousness.
Carlisle took a deep breath before he told me, "Bella, you were injured. Edward attacked you and Alice rescued you. She bit you…"
My eyes widened at what he had said, before confusion made itself known once again. "What do you mean, Edward attacked me? And what about Alice biting me? You're making it sound like you guys are vampires or something…"
Carlisle and Esme gave each other a look for the second time before turning and letting their attention focus on me. Carlisle nodded his head, before speaking, "yes, that's exactly what we're telling you. You fell in the forest and punctured your palm with a big piece of wood. You pulled it out and Edward reacted to the blood and tried to drain you. He would have succeeded if it weren't for Alice saving you and Jasper tackling Edward. Alice changed you…you're a vampire now."
"That's not funny. Why would you say something like that?"
"We're not joking, sweetie. You're a vampire–"
I stood up from the mess beneath me, the mattress below me the only solid thing beneath me that wasn't broken. I narrowed my eyes at them, before hissing, "don't call me that. Vampires don't exist. I don't know what you did to me but Charlie will find me. He'll make sure that you'll go to jail for kidnapping me."
Esme and Carlisle slumped at the words I said as though they were trying to figure out what to do next. As they analyzed their future suggestions to each other my eyes went towards the window. We were on the second floor and I was quite clumsy but I could jump out of the window without seriously injuring myself…well then again I could but at least I could say that I tried to get away from them.
Without looking at the married couple I rushed towards the window and threw it open before jumping out, praying to whoever was listening that I wouldn't break my legs on impact. I opened my eyes when I saw I landed perfectly, but I didn't focus too much attention on it. Instead I rushed forward into the woods that formed an arch around the property of the two-story house. I ran forward barefoot and in clothes that I couldn't care less about forming an opinion on despite the fact that the clothes were not my usual style at all.
As I ran forward in the woods I didn't trip over any of the scattered rocks or twigs or large roots of the trees around me. I didn't pay attention to the way the leaves around me revealed every single little vein within them, or the vibrancy that was appearing within the woods since it was mid March now and spring was upon us. I didn't even notice how the woods were completely different from the ones that were in Forks, all I cared about was getting away from the Cullens.
Or at least this was the plan before I heard the blood that was pumping through a pack of deer that were a hundred miles away from me to the east. I tensed up as the venom rose within my mouth, despite the fact that the smell of the blood was simple strong iron, which honestly still disgusted me since I had always been able to smell blood.
The moment I was close to the deer I lunged forward and let whatever instincts that were now within me to lunge forward. My teeth sunk into the throats of the deer, through the dark fur and muscle into the actual blood that was flowing through them. The blood came spraying out and covered me head to toe in the clothes that probably would have been thrown away the next day because they had served their purpose of being worn.
My head snapped up when I sensed someone zeroing in on me. I hissed as I crouched down around the caracasses of the dead deer. Alice appeared in front of me along with Jasper, where he had respect in his eyes at the fact that I was automatically fulfilling my thirst upon the deer and not having the darker instinct to go after people. There were tears rising in Alice's eyes though, as she sniffled and reached her arms out as though she hoped I would hug her and forgive her.
"I'm sorry, Bella. I just, I saw a vision of you and Edward both as vampires right before you moved to Forks and I thought he would be the one to change you. I hadn't expected that I would be the one to change you or for Edward to disappear from the vision. I just wanted you to be my sister really bad, that I hadn't taken anything else into account," Alice mumbled, shame flooding both her ethereal voice but also upon her beautiful features.
I sat down on the blood soaked grass and folded my legs up against my body again. The wind came and blew some at my hair though I knew that the last thing I needed to do was be okay with sitting like this while coated in deer blood. Chances were humans would still be enraptured by me, not that I really cared what they would think if they saw me right now.
"What did you tell Charlie?"
"We staged a scene that made it look like a blackbear or wild animal had killed you and carried you off to its den. We had some bloodied clothes in the woods that belonged to the both of you. No one suspected anything different than what we told them," Alice informed me.
I brought my hand up and covered it over my mouth, screaming into it, as I peered up at the skyline above me. I didn't know how to feel about Alice or Edward at the moment. At least Alice owned up to the fact that she had been the one who had bitten me and changed me. Edward on the other hand was who-knows-where and wasn't man enough to face me, to tell me he was sorry that he had attacked me and almost killed me.
Jasper slowly came forward to me, making me stiffen some wearily at him. I didn't ever have the chance to know him and as he came closer to me I slowly had a sense of calmness wash over me. I began to take deep breaths, as he kept encouraging me to focus my mind on something soothing. I opened my eyes a moment later and gave an awkward smile at Jasper.
"T-Thank you, Jasper. I know that Edward can read minds, Alice basically just told me that she can see visions so she most likely can see the future. You can control emotions, can't you?"
Jasper nodded his head before he reached his hand out so I could put my blood-stained hands into his pale and clear hand. It was still raining so I was both drenched in rain but also with blood. Some of the blood was washing off but there was still some that had dried and crusted on my pale skin and upon my clothes. As what would be expected with what had just happened.
Jasper led me in the direction of where the house had been, though he had pulled his arm off of me in a gentlemanly manner. Alice was behind us, her golden irises flickering in the direction of where the dead deer were with sadness. I wouldn't be surprised if she were saddened with how this all happened in the end, she must have wanted there to be a special first hunting trip with me.
Only instead of her traveling through the woods with me and telling me anecdotes about her own past hunting trips she soon was on the ground in a wet grassed meadow, peering at the dead deer around her. Her vision never came to fruition, and I didn't have to see visions myself nor have the ability to read emotions or read minds to know this. So I left her alone, knowing she would want some time by herself, just like she would give me time by myself.
Esme was waiting patiently in front of the egg blue front door that was circular and unique but suited the house perfectly.
The house, now that I was coming forward, was built more like an dreamy English cottage that Sleeping Beauty would live in. The cottage had one fireplace that was on the right side, and there was ivy that was growing on the side of the house, along with a flower bed overflowing with wildflowers and normal flowers. The upstairs wooden lattice windows were opened, to let in some fresh air. There was a black iron wrought light pole, which had flowers that were in a circular design around the light pole. The rocks and pebbles were a mixture of light tan and white.
"Where are we? I mean…where did you move us?"
Esme stepped forward and took one of my hands in hers, giving me a gentle squeeze, before she lightly brought me into the house.
We went down one of the corridors and into one of the bathrooms.
The exterior wall of the bathroom hadn't been plastered over and was the pebbles and stones from outside. A circular wooden lattice window looked out to the woods in the distance. The white clawfoot tub had a bathtub tray that was situated to the middle of the bathtub, so that one could sit their laptop upon it and still be in the bathtub or have one of their books sitting in front of them. The other walls in the bathroom, which were plastered, were a simple white. The floor matched the walls in the same shade of white, with just square tiles.
There were hanging potted plants above me, all of the plants were vibrant. I noticed that some of the flowers were helpful for natural sleep and relaxation. There was a faint scent of lavender that went throughout the room and was quite soothing. I on the other hand knew it would only bring nightmares to anyone who looked into the room and saw me.
Especially how everything was hand picked and well thought out for the bathroom, including the antique sink that must have come with the house when it had first been built. The toilet was one of the better brands, while back in Forks I was certain that Charlie had the same exact toilet as the one that had been installed when the house had been built. The paintings depicted scenes of a cottage on the beach, along with the shoreline of the same said beach.
Esme ushered me towards the toilet and, noticing how the lid was shut, I sat down on it while she left the bathroom. She came back with some new clothes for me and sat them on a decorative table in the bathroom, before she started a bath for me. She motioned for me to stand up and helped me strip out the bloodied clothes that stuck to my skin. She didn't comment on anything, even though there were tears that were always brimming my eyes that could never fall into immortality.
I stayed quiet and allowed her to bathe me in the claw foot tub, all the while I wished I could talk to Edward. I had thought that we were going to have a good relationship, and I thought we would actually officially date before long. Sure we were kind of seeing each other but he had said we wouldn't officially date until after I would meet his family, well now I met his family because he attacked me and one of his sisters turned me into a vampire. He was nowhere to be seen.
"Will Edward come back?"
Esme stopped rinsing the hair conditioner from my hair so she was holding the metal detachable shower head, where I could see her press her fingers into the metal a little harder than a normal person would. She stopped right before she would have left imprints into the metal. She drained the tub and helped me out of the tub, my feet touching the soft blue bathroom rug. She dried me off in seconds, and left the bathroom with the clothes which were in bloody ruins along with the used towels.
I put on a pink-orange hued spring sweater that fit me smug after I put on my simple undergarments. A white cotton skirt that fell down my midthigh with little embroidered daisies throughout the fabric and brown leather sandals finished off the look. I brushed out my hair since the vampiric speed Esme had used ended up drying my hair completely.
I peered at myself in the bathroom mirror hanging above the sink. My eyes widened as I saw how brilliant the crimson were in my irises. Black, thick eyelashes framed my eyes. My lips were small and plump, while my cheekbones were a little sharper. My hair was voluminous, thick and shiny. The red highlights in my dark brown hair were vibrant. My skin was so pale it was almost blue but I still was beautiful. Perhaps for the first time in my life.
I left the bathroom and went into the front room of the cottage, since the cottage still had some walls but most of the walls were taken down. Only those that were structurally needed were left, along with the kitchen. The stairs were built in one corner of the front room of the cabin, so half of the stairs disappeared because of the wall when someone was going upstairs.
The front living room of the cottage was bigger than an average living room in a cottage since most of the first floor was open floor plan. The walls that were on the exterior of the house were the same material as the outside.
A tan comfortable sectional was against one of the exterior walls with many different blankets thrown haphazardly across the sectional. A wooden coffee table that was square and thick was placed in the center of the space that was made from the sectional. There were multiple books and candle holders that were sitting on the coffee table, with lit candles. The chimney of the fireplace was the same pebble and the stone as the cottage exterior. The top mantel of the fireplace was wooden and had many framed photographs lining the mantel from the decades upon decades the whole family had been together. The photographs were all in black and white. The bottom mantel had little metal lanterns that had glass panels to the lanterns so that one could put a candle in for light.
A television table was angled towards the sectional and had a flat screen television on it, the latest one that was on the market most likely. There was a simple wooden dining table one would find in any other cottage with matching wooden dining chairs. A ceramic bowl full of plastic fruit was in the middle of the table, which had a total of ten chairs to it. A black wrought iron chandelier was above the dining table and was lit, while there was a Tiffany stain glass floor lamp at one end of the sectional.
The family were sitting on the sectional and as I slowly came into their eyesight properly, I reached my hand up and ran my fingers through my hair. I soon found myself asking the family where I currently was, since they hadn't told me before nor would they tell me where Edward was. I hadn't expected the answer I would receive from Carlisle.
"Bella, we're currently in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, England."
AUTHOR'S NOTE: here's the first official chapter of 'Flowers will Bloom'. I hope that you enjoyed it. I wanted Bella's reaction to be realistic, I hope that I conveyed that.
as always: Twilight doesn't belong to me
