"I can't believe you didn't tell me."
Alexandra Cabot took a minute to look up from her work. Not because she didn't know who was standing in her doorway, and not because her work was all that important. She didn't look up because she knew exactly who it was, and she couldn't bear to look her in the eye.
"You can't even look at me now?"
She finally looked up and met the detective's eyes.
"Olivia…"
The dark-haired woman walked in and shut the door. "Don't worry, I haven't forgotten how to hide." She couldn't resist the biting remark.
"I didn't know how to tell you, okay?"
"You told me about your boyfriend in Witness Protection."
"This is
different."
"Yes, you're getting married. It's very
different."
"It's also none of your business." Alex said quietly.
"Not as your ex, maybe not. But we were your friends, Alex. You didn't invite anyone from SVU to your party. Are you ashamed of us? Didn't want the cops embarrassing you at your fancy party?"
"Don't say that. You know perfectly well you are the reason I couldn't invite anyone from the one-six, don't make this about something it's not."
"I wouldn't have done anything stupid."
Alex half-laughed. "It's not about you. You expect me to sit there and be all smiles about my wedding with you there? Hell, I even had problems with a man I used to date being there. And I didn't even really care about him."
"Why are you marrying him?"
"He's a good man, and he asked me to. We've been over this so many times. It's why we broke up, remember?"
"A week before you were shot, how could I forget? And then you went away, and when you finally come back for good I have to hear about it from Cragen? And read about your engagement in the newspaper?" She paused, and Alex didn't say anything. "If we hadn't fought, if we had still been together when you went into protection…would it have been different?"
Alex looked down at her desk and blinked back tears. "It was best this way. I would have broken up with you before leaving anyway. It wouldn't have been fair to you."
"Is it fair to me now? Is it fair to him?"
The ADA sighed. She stood up and paced while she talked, as though she was trying to convince herself as much as Olivia. "He loves me. I care about him. I am attracted to him. Will it be like it could have been with a woman? With you? No. I don't delude myself that much. Will it be a bad life? I don't think so."
Olivia smiled sadly and walked back toward the door. "I hope for your sake it isn't."
She put her hand on the door handle but was surprised to find a slender one on top of hers. The hand's match found its way to her chin and she looked up to see sad eyes.
"I will always love you." Gently she lowered her lips to meet Olivia's, just brushing before she pulled away.
Olivia kept her eyes closed. "And I'll love you. If you change your mind, you know where to find me." She slipped out of the office.
Alex leaned against the door and let loose the tears she'd been holding in for so long.
