"Excuse me?"

Natalie stared at Sirius in disbelief. "You've got to be kidding me!" she said shrilly.

Sirius took her face in his hands. "Look, Nat, I know," he said apologetically. "But I have to do this for James. He's my best mate, you can understand that, can't you?" He leaned down and kissed her deeply on the lips. He let go and looked directly into her eyes. "Believe me, if there was any other way…" Sirius sighed and brushed a few dark strands out of Natalie's eyes. "I have to do this. I mean, if you had to do this for Lily, I'd understand completely. Besides," he added, "I thought you hated Slughorn's parties."

Natalie shrugged. "This one was supposed to be different." She fiddled with Sirius' tie for a moment, then sighed. "Just…do what you have to do," she muttered begrudgingly.

"Aw, Nat, thanks," Sirius said gratefully, drawing her into a hug. "I swear I'll make this up to you," he murmured into her hair.

"Yeah, yeah," replied Natalie in a resigned voice, stepping away. "Just try and come back in one piece this time, deal?"

Sirius laughed in that bark-like fashion of his. "Deal." He kissed Natalie's forehead very sweetly, and looked deep into her azure eyes. "I love you."

Natalie responded by kissing his nose. "I love you too," she whispered.

Sirius grinned, kissed her full on the mouth one more time, then set off up the marble staircase at a run, black robes billowing out behind him.

Natalie sighed again, then slowly made her way to the Great Hall, where Lily was waiting.
