Magia Ultra Mente Somina - Magic Beyond Wildest Dreams

Chapter 2

That night Max waited until around midnight to make his move; he wanted to ensure the rest of his family was asleep before he started his research. Pulling the small box out that he had found in the lair, he unwrapped it from the blanket tucked away inside the desk door and set it on his desk. Brushing the rest of the dust off, Max sat down and turned his desk light on before opening his laptop and starting his work. At first, nothing came up when he searched the words; it took a few tries and some frustrations, but eventually, he came across a site where he found its meaning. It looked like this:

Magia Ultra Mente Somina - In Latin, means Magic Beyond Wildest Dreams. In recent studies, these words were to protect something powerful. If it is written on something -

Max stopped reading to start writing the information down. It took several minutes, but after he had it down, Max closed his laptop and returned to the box. Grinning with excitement, Max pulled his wand out and whispered a spell to the lock; what surprised Max was when the spell worked and unlocked the lock. Opening the box, Max's eyes widen as he sees a beautiful purple glow. A round amulet caused the glow. It was small and connected to the chain; putting it on his neck, Max looked down and saw a piece of paper on the bottom of the box. Picking it up, he reads the note:

Beware those who come across Pandora's necklace, which is more potent than an average wizard can handle. Warnings, if you -

Max didn't finish reading it, and he took the amulet out of the box and held it in his hands. As always, Max ignored the warnings and went right to the critical part of the paper.

Put the amulet on, and make sure the chain is securely wrapped around your neck. Once the amulet owner is on, the wearer and the wearer will have magic powers as long as they wear it. But do not wear it too, or become attached and never leave the wearer's side... Pandora's amulet can be tricky, and only a powerful wizard can gain access to its magic...

Max grinned wider at this, not caring about wearing it too long; he put the paper down, put the amulet on, and secured the chain. At first, the young former wizard waited, but nothing happened. Then, as he was about to take it off, the necklace glowed, and Max's whole body shook. After that, his whole body glowed, and his wizard senses were back, as well as his powers. The amulet clung to Max's neck as if its life depended on it.

"hmm…I need a spell to try this thing out…." Max thought for a moment and said, "Commakus Pancakes!"

After stating that, a plate with eight pancakes piled on it randomly appeared on his desk. Grinning to himself, Max tried a few more spells while eating the pancakes. Once the boy was done reciting spells, Max smiled, happy that he had found a way to get his powers back! He could figure it out by himself through his research and determination. If his family knew, they would be shocked and surprised at him. But for now, Max decided to keep the fact that he had wizard powers again to himself. That night, he put the amulet back in the box and safely secured the box in his desk door once more. Lying in bed, he fell asleep with a smile….

….

The following day Jerry Russo had gotten up early to prepare for his daughter's wizard training session. Even though his children were done with the competition and he was no longer their trainer, his middle child Alex had asked him to continue helping her with her magic. At first, Jerry had thought she was messing with him, but after seeing the look on his daughter's face, he could see she was serious about her statement, so he agreed.

Getting into the lair was easy for Jerry Russo; even though he wasn't a wizard anymore, unlike his son Max (who also wasn't a wizard now), he had easy access to the lair. All he needed was a magic key, which was how he could get in for years. The key was on his key chain, and Jerry had never told anyone about the key. The man figured if his family never questioned, he would be able to answer, and he never needed to share the information. But, getting into the lair, Jerry set things up for when his daughter would awake; Jerry would be lucky if it were before noon. She always slept in and never took things seriously, so he wasn't holding his breath.

After getting everything set up, Jerry decided to check on something secret and special while waiting. See, Jerry was asked by Professor Crumbs to protect Pandora's Amulet; it was one of the most powerful items in the wizarding world, and if it got in the hands of the wrong person, things could go wrong, very wrong for the wizarding world and the mortal world. Even though it was hard, Jerry got down on his knees and began to look under one of the bookshelves containing magic books; it was where he hid the box with Pandora's amulet. If anyone knew their family, it was Jerry. Sure, he loved his family to death, but they were all lazy, most of the time anyway, besides his oldest son, but even then, he didn't have anything to worry about. Because of the laziness in his family, Jerry hid the box under the bookshelf. But of course, one could imagine Jerry Russo's shock when he saw it wasn't there.

Hitting his head on the edge of the bookshelf, he gasped in shock before yelping in pain and rubbing his head. Starting to feel frantic at the loss of Pandora's amulet, he began tearing the wizard's lair apart, looking for it. Just as he was pulling boxes out from under the desk, his middle child Alex, walked in with her best friend, Harper. The side always sided the two, never going anywhere without the other lately. They were inseparable, and Jerry almost didn't hear them come in; he was so frantic; it was when Alex spoke did he look up.

"Hey, dad, I'm ready for my wizard training!" She stated with a grin as she sat down on the couch, propping her feet up.

Getting up, Jerry frowns and says, "Our lesson is canceled - "

"Cancelled, what? Why? I was looking forward to this!" Alex stated as she jumped up; Harper patted Alex's shoulder, trying to relax her.

Jerry frowned, "Because….remember Pandora's amulet?"

"Yes, you've been entrusted to watch it by the wizard council. Why?"

"It's missing…."

"What? Missing? Are you sure?"

"I'm sure someone got it somehow…."

"Did you double-check?"

"I did, yes; it's not where I hid it."

"Where did you hide it?"

"Under the bookshelves."

Alex and Harper look at one another before rushing to the bookshelves to help Jerry Russo look for it. After searching multiple times, the girls admitted it was gone as well. Frowning, the three start searching all over the lair for Pandora's amulet. Alex and Haper were there the day's Professor Crumbs had brought the amulet with the council. At first, they had needed clarification about why Mr. Russo had been entrusted, but they argued that no one would expect former wizards to have hold of it. In the end, it made sense, and Mr. Russo agreed to watch it. Now, it was gone, and the three had no idea how this could vanish in mid-air. The three sat around the table, trying to think of where it could be.

"Did you miss place it? Sometimes when designing new outfits, I set something down somewhere and forget where I put it. It's an effortless thing to do…." Harper suggests as she tries to think; she frowns, watching Mr. Russo panic. Usually, he was very level-headed about these things. It was odd seeing this side of him.

"No, I'm telling you I didn't misplace it, I knew where it was, and it was under that bookshelf." Mr. Russo explained as he started rubbing the sides of his forehead, feeling a headache forming.

"Okay, say you did; how would it just vanish?" Alex wondered as she thought as well.

Sighing, Mr. Russo thought it was a long shot of thought, but the question weighed on his mind. Looking at Alex and Harper seriously, he sighs, "Was anyone else in this lair recently besides us three?"

At first, there is thick tension and silence in the air. Harper and Alex glance at one another as if they have a mind communication. Finally, Alex sighed and states, "Max was in here yesterday."

Jerry Russo froze at that statement; his youngest son, who was now a former wizard due to losing the wizard competition, had been in a wizard lair yesterday. Many concerning questions started to file in his mind as he tried to read his daughter's expressions, but she was good at hiding them. Once more, the thought of his youngest son possibly finding Pandora's amulet scared him. Mr. Russo loved his children, and he did, but sometimes his youngest son wasn't the brightest of the group, and if he lost it or used it the wrong way, things could go wrong. Jerry eyed Alex and Harper.

"Why was Max in the wizard lair yesterday?"

"Oh, he said he was doing some light reading," Alex stated as if was

Looking at his daughter in confusion, Jerry frowns. "Light reading?... Alex, your brother, doesn't read; why would you fall for that?" Jerry wonders as he tries to understand the situation. Groaning, he sighs, "Alright, let's go find Max; I need to talk to him…."

Mr. Russo walks out of the lair while Harper and Alex look at one another and shrugs. The two continue to study on their waiting for the father to return. It took some time for Mr. Russo to find his youngest son, but Max was working his shift at their family-owned substation when he did. Jerry approaches Max after the young adult takes a costumers order.

"Max, can I talk to you for a second?"

"Sure, dad, what's up?"

At that moment, Mr. Russo pulled Max into the back of the substation, where their kitchen area was. He had done this, so their conversation was more private, for no one in New York nor the world knew they were wizards, so they had to keep it on the down low whenever they talked about it. Max looked at his father in confusion as he was dragged into the kitchen.

"Dad… what's going on? I've never seen you so panicked." Max commented as he frowned.

"Max….why were you in the wizard lair yesterday? Your not even a wizard anymore."

"What, just cause I'm not a wizard anymore, doesn't mean I'm allowed in there? But Harper isn't - "

Mr. Russo interrupted him. "- That's not what I meant. I want to know why you were in there and if you found anything unusual and took anything that shouldn't have been taken?"

At this, Max froze, unsure whether to tell his father. Seeing his father panicked about it must mean that the amulet he took was vital, and any good son would tell the truth. But, on second thought, because of that amulet, Max had wizard powers again, and if his father took it away, he couldn't bare to go through losing his powers again.

"No, dad, I didn't. Why would I take something that isn't mine?"

Sighing, Jerry states, "I believe you, but I was just asking, I just uh….misplaced something then, that's all, excuse me…."

With that, Jerry Russo left, returning to the wizard's lair to continue looking for Pandora's amulet. At this, Max frowns a little bit, slightly feeling guilty for lying to his father, but then smiling, remembering it was giving him magic powers again. But what Max didn't know was that Pandora's amulet was about to be one of the biggest problems the Russos were ever to face…
