Vanilla Shampoo

Sequel to Don't Let Me Leave

He watches the t.v , staring intently at the screen, his eyes never blinking.

Not even once.

He doesn't understand why it is that the commercial has him so captivated.

Yes he does.

He doesn't understand why every time he visits the supermarket, he has to buy vanilla scented shampoo.

Yes he does.

And he sure as hell doesn't understand why, for ten whole minutes every morning, he stands rooted to the spot, with the shampoo bottle pressed up against his nose, his blue eyes shut tight as he inhales deeply.

Yes he does.

Brooke used that shampoo.

He'd never noticed before, he'd never appreciated that sweet, musky scent.

But he does now.

And he wishes it hadn't taken him up until the night she left to figure that out.

--

Peyton finds him curled up in a ball on the bathroom floor, the cream-coloured bottle in his hand.

And for a moment, she thinks he's dead.

Until he lifts his head up slowly and she sees the tears falling down his face.

--

Nathan walks in. He does knock first, but they don't hear him.

But they notice when he shakes his head in disgust, shouting that it didn't take him long to get over Brooke.

Lucas can't even respond.

She just shoots daggers at Nathan's back. Lucas doesn't even notice.

The tears are still falling.

And he prays (for the first time, because he's never really believed in God before) that she'll come back, and that he'll be able to smell that shampoo on her again.

But when he wakes up on that cold, hard, tiled bathroom floor, he knows his prayers haven't been answered.

And he's not even surprised.

If he were Brooke, he wouldn't come back either.

--

He's in the supermarket again. The excuse was that he needed to buy some fruit.

He needed some more shampoo.

There are too many bottles of the stuff in his bathroom now, and the smell is almost too overpowering when he enters first thing in a morning (or in some cases, when he wakes up on the floor again) but he can't stop buying it.

That's when he sees her again.

And she's buying the same shampoo as him.

--

Her eyes stare at him with tears in them, and she whispers that she didn't want to leave.

He just stares at the ground, because he has no idea what to say. Even 'I'm sorry' can't escape his trembling lips.

She picks up the bottle, and he sees it's the last.

His face falls (even more so than it already was, if that's possible) and she sees, handing him the bottle, telling him that he can have it.

He shakes his head. No.

He doesn't need it, he has enough.

--

She giggles a little, shrugging her shoulders, which makes her hair tumble around them.

It's then when he notices how happy she is.

Without him.

She laughs at the fact that she always has to buy the same shampoo.

He can't laugh, it's too serious a moment. Brooke always was one to play down the reality of the situation.

And then she tells him she'll try the new cherry scent, after all, it is the same brand.

That's when he gets it. That's when he realises she's a different person now.

--

He waits until he can see her leaving the store, until he makes his way back to the cosmetics isle, switching the vanilla scent, for the cherry one.

It's the nearest to the present Brooke he'll get now.
