Adventures Of Kate and The Sitter

Chapter Twelve – Interrogation Time

When Kate woke up from her headache induced nap, she was quite surprised to be looking at Kelly. When she fell asleep, she was being held by Kelly. She was a little frighten and wondering who was holding her? Kate sat up and slowly turned so she could find out who was holding her. "Hi Erica," she said as she looked right into Erica's eyes. "I'm hungry," Kate said as she climbed out of Erica's lap and ran out of the guest house and into the main house after putting on her glasses which were laying on the coffee table in front of her.

She quickly found her mommies sitting at the dining room table. Her plate was right where she left it an hour earlier. She climbed up into her mama's lap and said, "I'm hungry, mama." Jane quickly moved Kate's plate over in front of her so she could help Kate finish her meal.

"I bet you are little one, you only had a few bites before you got a headache. How does your head feel now?" Jane asked her as Kelly and Erica entered the main house. They smiled at Kate, Jane and Maura and then went out to the living so they could visit with other family members.

Kate looked at her mama and told her, "It's better now, thank you. I think there was just too many people and too much noise."

"Yes, there was lots of noise with all of the family here. If it gets to me too much again, please let us now, okay?" Jane informed her.

"Okay, mama, I will do that." Kate said as she took a bite of a slice of turkey.

Erica was secretly hoping that she was free of Kate's questions now and she told Kelly so. "Oh Erica, I don't think Kate has forgotten about her questions. She has been working on her list for the last few days. She has been so cute with her little clipboard walking around the house. When she thought of a question, she would pause whatever she was doing and write it down on her clipboard. Maura lent her one of her clipboards out of her office because Kate said she needed one."

MJ walked up and started talking to Erica and Kelly. He noticed Kate wasn't around so he figured this was his chance. He heard them mention Kate and her questions and he replied, "Kate has even been asking us what questions to ask you. I helped her look on the internet. She was happy that there were so many questions available. We each picked one question for her to ask and she was happy. I'm sure she will corner you and ask you all of her questions."

It didn't take Kate long to get full. She slid off of Jane's lap and went up the stairs to get her clipboard from her bedroom. She very carefully took the paper out of her back pocket and unfolded it. She placed her paper back on the clipboard and grabbed several pens and went back downstairs. She was going to interrogate her suspect.

Kate had watched her mama conduct an interrogation of Uncle Frost. They had set up the mock interrogation so she could explain to all of the children what she does when she interrogates someone. Uncle Frost had enjoyed the intense interrogation.

At the beginning of the interrogation Jane said, "Time: 1507. This is Detective Jane Rizzoli and I am interrogating Mr. Barrold Frost regarding the theft of the last cookie from the cookie jar?"

Jane: Mr. Frost did you take the last cookie from the cookie jar earlier today?

Frost: I did not, Jane.

Jane: Mr. Frost, my name is Detective Rizzoli, please refer to me as detective or Detective Rizzoli when we are talking.

Frost: Yes, officer.

Jane: That is detective or Detective Rizzoli, Mr. Frost.

Frost: Oh yes, sorry detective.

Jane: We have witnesses that have come forward and ID'd you.

Frost: Well detective, they are wrong, I am innocent, I didn't take the last cookie out of the cookie jar.

Jane: Should I review the video of the break room with you and show you that you did in fact take the last cookie from the cookie jar?

Frost: I would love to see your video footage, detective. Bring it on.

Jane proceeded to show Frost the video of him taking a cookie out of the cookie jar. Jane paused the video and said, "There you have it Mr. Frost. We caught you with your hand in the cookie jar."

Frost: That just shows that I took a cookie from the cookie jar, not that I took the last cookie from the cookie jar.

Jane: True, however, the next person after you that attempted to take a cookie out of the cookie jar was very disappointed that there was no cookie in the cookie jar.

Jane un-paused the video and showed Mr. Frost that when she approached the cookie jar to get a cookie, the cookie jar was empty. She tipped the cookie jar upside down and no cookies came out. She showed the camera the empty cookie jar. Jane then said, "There you have it Mr. Frost, video proof that you did in fact take the last cookie from the cookie jar. What do you have to say for yourself?"

Frost: I guess you need to get to the cookie jar s little bit faster.

Jane: Interrogation ended at 1510. Mr. Frost is being charged with taking the last cookie from the cookie jar.

The children had enjoyed seeing how their mama conducted an interrogation. They tried to have their mommy show them how she conducts an autopsy but Maura wouldn't allow that. She did however let them watch a mock autopsy in which she and former Senior Criminologist Susie Chang participated. They had a full adult size plastic body in which you could remove different body parts. They ran through a quick version of what they did during an autopsy, taking the different body parts and weighing them. The children were fascinated to watch them. Maura even spoke into the tape recorder like she normally would. She tried to make the autopsy as real as possible without utilizing a real human body, and definitely no blood.

It didn't take long for Kate to find her suspect. Erica was seating in the living room talking with Kelly, Nina, and Chloe. Kate walked up and politely tapped Erica on the shoulder. Erica said, "Hey Kate, are you feeling better?"

Kate stood there with her hand on one hip and the clipboard in her other hand. She nodded and then said, "Erica, I have some questions to ask you. Would you like to come to my office or do you want me to ask you right here in front of these witnesses?"

Erica smiled and looked at Kelly, Nina and Chloe as she replied, "I am comfortable here."

Kate sat down on the coffee table in front of her and started asking Erica her questions being careful to write the answers down before continuing to the next question. Kate started my saying "I am Kate Rizzoli-Isles and I am starting my interrogation of Erica at," she paused to look at the clock, "5:21 regarding whether I can accept her as one of my best friends." She then started with the first question on her list, "When is your birthday?"

Erica: January 15th, same as Kelly. I love that we share the same birthdate.

Kate: Do you have any brothers or sisters?

Erica: Nope, not a one. You are very lucky to have siblings.

Kate: What is your favorite color?

Erica: Purple, several shades but I lean towards the darker shades.

Kate: What is your favorite food?

Erica: Pancakes, Kelly tells me you like bunny pancakes. I want to try those.

Kate: Maybe we can have some tomorrow. Who is your favorite hero?

Erica: Kelly, because she has protected me since I was a little child and she still protects me today.

Kate: What is your favorite animal?

Erica: An elephant

Kate: What is your favorite school subject?

Erica: Psychology

Kate: What is your favorite movie?

Erica: Star Wars, all of them. I hear you have some pretty cool lightsabers downstairs, maybe we can play with them tomorrow, if your ma says it is okay.

Kate: My mama loves playing with the lightsabers. If she is good today maybe mommy will let us bring out the lightsabers. How and when did you meet my best friend, Kelly?

Erica: I was new to the elementary school. I was in second grade. Some boys started picking on me on the playground and Kelly came up and told them to leave me alone. They laughed and said make us. Kelly knocked them both down and no one messed with me after that.

Kate: How long have you been girlfriends?

Erica: Kelly has been my girlfriend since 9th grade, I would be lost without her.

Frankie had walked into the room right as Kate told Erica that she had some questions to ask her and started videotaping her. Nina and Chloe took out their cell phones and started videotaping the conversation without Kate noticing. They all had huge smiles on their faces as they thought it was the cutest thing.

When Kate finished her last question she made the following statement, "Interrogation ended at 5:26. I can now answer the question regarding whether I can accept Erica as one of my best friends. My answer is yes, Erica can be one of my best friends.

Kate finished writing her statement on her clipboard and then put down the clipboard and walked over and gave Erica a hug and said, "Would you be one of my best friends?"

"I would love to be one of your best friends Kate." Erica replied as she hugged Kate back. She pulled Kate up onto her lap and told her, "I think it is only fair that I now get to interrogate you. Because you are a minor you need to have one of your parents present. Can you please get one of your parents?"

Kate smiled and climbed down off of Erica's lap and ran over to her mommies. "Mommies, Erica needs to interrogate me and because I am a minor, I need one of my parents present. Can you come over to the couch with me?" Jane and Maura look at each other and just laughed as they get up and followed Kate to the couch so she can be interrogated by Erica.

Kate slowed down so she could take a hand from both of her mommies. They sat down on the loveseat across from Erica and Kate climbed up on Jane's lap. Erica started her interrogation by saying, "Thank you Detective and Dr. Rizzoli-Isles for coming in to see me. I have just a few questions for your daughter. We seem to be interrogating each other with the purpose of seeing if we can be best friends." Jane and Maura both nodded in acknowledgment.

Erica: What is your favorite color?

Kate: Blue, although I also like black.

Erica: What is your favorite food?

Kate: ice cream, lots of flavors.

Erica: Who is your favorite hero?

Kate: my mommies, they love and protect me.

Erica: What is your favorite animal?

Kate: Tortoise, my family has one, his name is Bass, he lives at the zoo and we go and visit him and his friends. My mommy got him we she was a child. Did you know that Tortoises can live for up to 150 years and can easily reach 30 inches and weigh up to 200 pounds.

Erica: I didn't know that about tortoises. Can you take me to see your tortoise one day?"

Kate: Yes, are you going to be moving here with my best friend?

Erica: Yes, in December. Is that okay with you?

Kate: Yes, as one of my best friends it would be great if you lived in Boston, so that we can do things together.

Erica: What is your favorite school subject?

Kate: Art, I like to paint. My grand mére is an artist and she helps me. She does more than paint but for now, I just want to paint.

Erica: What is your favorite movie?

Kate: All of the Star Wars movies. Mama loves Star Wars and she watches them with us downstairs on the big TV, especially on National Star Wars Day.

Erica: Maybe next year I can watch them with you as well. How and when did you meet my best friend, Kelly?

Kate: I met her when she came to interview with my mommies to possibly be our babysitter. I'm not sure how long my mommies can answer that question. I'm not great with dates. I do know that today we are celebrating mama's birthday because she was busy with a murder investigation on her birthday. She doesn't know it though as it is a surprise. (Jane looked over at Maura who just smiled at her. Jane hated surprises and hated celebrating her birthday).

"Thank you, Kate. This concludes my interrogation of you and I would like for you to be one of my best friends also. Do you accept?"

Kate huddled up with her mothers like as if they were discussing it in great deal. All three of them were laughing and Kate turned to Erica and replied, "Yes, I would like to be one of your best friends."

"Cool." Erica said as Kate climbed down off of her mama's lap and walked over to give Erica another hug. Kate then climbed up on to the couch and sat in between Erica and Kelly and grabbed a hand from each other them and just smiled at her mothers. She was happy she was seating with her two new best friends.

Sensing that the questioning had ended Angela and Constance came out and asked for everyone to come in the kitchen area. On the kitchen island was a lit birthday cake with the number 46 on it. It was Jane's 46th birthday and Jane just shook her head from side to side. Kate had already let it slip that they were celebrating Jane's birthday today.

Constance lit the two numbered candles and Angela said, "Let's sing Happy Birthday to my baby girl."

Jane just slid behind Maura. She didn't like the attention. Maura attempted to pull Jane out, after a minute Jane stepped beside Maura and they started singing 'Happy Birthday' to her.

Jane cut the cake and said, "My wife knows I don't like to celebrate my birthday. However, if I have to celebrate it I am glad that I am celebrating it with all of you, thank you." Angela and Constance served cake, and a variety of pies. They instructed everybody not to eat yet until everybody was seated.

Once everybody was seated Angela told them, "As we eat, we are going to go around the tables and say what we are thankful for. Normally we would have done it earlier but I got sidetracked. I will start.

Everybody started eating and Angela said, "I'm thankful for everybody being here and sharing this special day. Thank you for coming and sharing your time with all of us."

They spent the next fifteen minutes going around the table when it was Kate's turn, she said, "I'm thankful for my family and that Erica is here with us." She turned to look at Kelly and Erica and smiled at them. "Now can we watch some football."

"That's my girl." Jane said as Maura playfully swatted her.
