Chapter 10
Rachel sighed and smoothed her now visible belly, it was the first time since this whole nightmare started that she was enjoying the pregnancy, but she would give Sharon and Andy credit. They had been so good to her; no other couple had done that. In fact, the young woman was happy to be pampered, she could even imagine herself as the couple's daughter even if she had a baby in her womb.
With a sigh, she picked up the phone and curled up on the bed to avoid being seen, it was good to be at the end of the pregnancy that made her have a room all to herself. And the girl was being cautious. In fact, it was the middle of the night and she still hadn't been able to sleep. So with a little shaky hands, Rachel texted the number she remembered was her mother's, but received no response, just like the other times. But she wasn't too disappointed, it had been a while since she was taken.
The young woman could barely remember her parents, as she had been kidnapped at the age of 10 when she was riding a bicycle, she stayed for three years receiving treatment, which she later discovered was a hormone treatment. At 13 she was doped for the first time, the last clear memory of that day was Adrian I kissing her, a disgusting old man. After that all her memories are hazy, at some point an official came by and said she was pregnant; and reminded her that she had better obey or the baby would pay. This has been going on for the last 5 years and she has accepted her grisly fate. And when other young girls came along, she took to caring and advising the others as soon as they were alert enough to understand.
Rachel never quite understood what was going on until she met Chloe and understood that she was arrested and a victim of human trafficking, she thought that with the Frenchwoman there and being pregnant everything would be easier. But then Chloe disappeared and Betty, Chloe's old roommate, claimed that the Frenchwoman said too much. Rachel knew she would never see her again.
Sadly, like so many things that have happened to her, Rachel has adapted to this life, even if she has been scared all along. She knew when to shut up and when to be nice to impress, sometimes she managed to go unnoticed and if she was good enough she wouldn't get drugged all the time.
Still lost in thought, it took her a moment to realize the discussion in the next room, the female voice was clearly Judith. Someone was screaming at her and Rachel felt her body shiver with fear as she realized who the other person was, Adrian II was enraged.
"I can't believe you didn't notice". he said irritably. "They are police, I knew this tactic of dumping the bodies in Griffith Park would give us away".
"Your father used to do that, we were never discovered".
"Of course not, it was the 90s, people didn't go hiking in the woods". He almost growled at her. "Who is the Bennett girl?"
"Rachel".
"Great, get her and take her to the shed".
"What? Are you mad? She is 7 months pregnant".
"And? The baby is fine, she can be born now and let's give it to the couple in Argentina, they want a baby right away. It's a great option".
"Don't you know that, it's too risky. We can lose both".
"I don't care about the girl, I just need the baby".
"Your father was right, you are inconsequential".
"Keep challenging me and taking away my authority and you'll be just another body in that park". The venom in the man's voice was chilling and Rachel covered her mouth to keep from the sob of despair.
The young woman did not know what to do, this was all very confusing. The couple who helped her so much were police officers? Was that why they were kind to her? Would Adrian and Judith really kill her? Taking a deep breath, Rachel tried to calm down, they would be here any minute and she only had one chance to make things right.
Now desperate, she called Sharon and quickly said she was in danger and where she would be taken, luckily, she knew more or less where to go after numerous trips to the place. With her heart pounding she hid her cell phone when she heard footsteps and closed her eyes pretending to sleep, but not before sending everything she remembered about the way to the shed to the couple, she hoped that was enough.
"Get up, let's go". Judith grumbled and shook her shoulders.
Rachel thought about resisting, screaming or running, but the two security guards at the door and the nurse with the syringe showed her which way to go. Tears started to flow and she just let herself go, hands protectively on her stomach, but any feeling was erased as her vision darkened. Unfortunately, the young woman never saw Sharon's message saying they were on their way.
After Rachel's call and getting a little too desperate to act right away, Sharon was able to pull herself together long enough to start the calls. She called Brenda and asked for backup, she told her what Rachel said and how close they were going to arrest Adrian and his gang. The FBI was also immediately notified, but as the two officers were closer than anyone else, they acted.
Andy and Sharon then rushed to their car to prevent a tragedy from happening, and while they were on the road they began to formulate some plans and express their fears:
"Oh my God, Andy, what if they found out about the cell phone and because of that she's in danger?" Sharon worried.
"I don't believe it was that". Andy spoke as he stepped on the accelerator. "Let's focus on getting to her".
Stating, Sharon tried to calm down, she wasn't the socialite now, she was the Captain. Taking a deep breath, she called Brenda again and asked someone to trace the cell phone she had given the girl, they had two options: either the cell phone was with her going to the shed or it was in the place where they would find the other girls.
"We need a plan". Andy started.
"Assess and move forward". Sharon spoke firmly.
"Like on patrol days?" He smiled a little, that's what they learned at the academy.
"Exactly". She smiled too. "All we have so far is an address, but it could be a trap. We don't know if someone found the phone and planned this".
"It's a risk we're going to have to take, but she identified herself, didn't she? Did she put the code at the end of the message as we asked?"
"Yeah". Sharon stated, then remembered something else. "And if it is a shed, how are we going to get in?"
"I don't know, we're going to have to improvise". Andy spoke and accelerated a little more. "We're in the dark, we just have to be careful and avoid Rachel getting caught in the crossfire".
"That's a bad plan". She whispered
"That or nothing". Andy shrugged, but he knew she was right.
The rest of the trip was done in partial silence, they got updates from Brenda's team and the FBI the entire way, all tense and eager to take down this criminal faction.
Finally, they arrived at the place, it was a deserted and a bit hilly area. On the one hand it was good, because they could go on foot and stay under cover. However, because they did not know the place very well, they could get lost or injured. But they knew they would have to risk it.
Andy parked behind a tree and hoped no one would spot the vehicle, even though it was pitch black. The two officers got out of the car, both armed and ready to attack. For 10 minutes they walked forward with their flashlights pointed at the ground, not really knowing where to go, just looking around and trusting Rachel's memory of the way. Just as they were about to give up, they spotted a shed, just as they were told, but it would have looked abandoned if it weren't for the lights on.
"Do you think she lied to us? Even with all these lights it looks abandoned". Sharon whispered and looked around, green eyes focused and bright. Tension seemed to overwhelm her.
"I hope not, if that happens our cover is blown".
"Then we have..." Sharon, however, was cut off when they heard the sounds of shouting and arguing.
The two approached cautiously and almost immediately saw Judith next to a car, she was holding Rachel's arm tightly, the girl was screaming and clutching her stomach. Sharon knew right away that she was in labor.
"You are incompetent, I told you to wait". Adrian called out to Judith. "Now it's going to be much more complicated to finish all of this".
"What the hell are you talking about? What do you want to wait? Two more months?" Judith said angrily, finally the young woman stopped screaming as the contraction stopped. "She's not ready, I told you that. But with her paranoia, everything had to be rushed".
"What did you give her?"
"A stimulant. How do you think she would have the baby without being on time?" Judith was furious with the man in front of her. "I really can't believe how your father left you in charge of this agency".
"I'm the heir, the legitimate son". He scoffed. "And while you were making money you didn't make any complaints. What changed?"
Judith just stared at him but she didn't say anything, she didn't seem willing to have any more arguments with the young woman squirming beside her.
"Let's go inside, I don't want to give birth here, the baby must be taken care of". She said through gritted teeth.
Andy and Sharon watched the two enter the large shed and looked at each other worriedly, it was clear that the location was right, but something serious had happened to advance the baby's birth and the Captain felt the fear take over.
"We have to save Rachel, I don't think they're going to let her live after the baby is born". Andy spoke and took a deep breath. "I'm not seeing anyone watching".
"Me neither". She spoke finding her voice shaky. "Let's try to see through one of the windows, we don't know who might be inside".
Nodding, Andy started down the small slope they were on and ran to the first window he saw. Spying, the Lieutenant tried to see what was inside the place and tried not to be shaken by seeing a hospital structure. However, there weren't many people there, it was possible to see only an armed guard and a nurse according to the uniform she was wearing. And besides those people, just Rachel, Judith and Adrian.
Andy told Sharon what he saw and the two began to formulate a plan to lure the guard outside and break in. Using some rocks from the site, they managed to make enough noise for the man to run away with the gun in hand. As soon as he spotted Sharon, he raised the rifle and had his finger on the trigger ready to act, but he never got the chance, Andy used the gun itself to stab him.
"Are you okay?" He asked her, Sharon just stated and used her handcuff to hold the unconscious man's arms.
"Come on, we don't have much time". The Captain spoke and went ahead, they didn't know if Brenda was close, unfortunately they couldn't wait.
Upon entering the shed, they were greeted by silence and this made the hairs stand on the back of their necks, it was very strange, they had to be cautious. With so many beds around and all closed, it was difficult to know where Judith and Adrian were. Walking slowly and opening all the curtains, they followed apprehensively and with guns steady in front of their faces, fingers rigid on the trigger.
Suddenly, they heard a groan of pain and they knew immediately it was Rachel and they hurried towards where the sound was coming from. They were expecting the attack, but not so sudden. As they ran to the young woman's bed, Adrian ran past them and without hesitation fired shots in their direction. Sharon and Andy reacted immediately and threw themselves to the ground, that was a scenario they didn't want to happen.
Andy cursed when a bullet hit his arm and he couldn't see the man from where he was. With difficulty he tried to find out where Sharon had gone, but everything was in chaos, as Rachel returned to scream as well as another woman, he suspected that she was the nurse.
"ADRIAN!" Andy yelled. "YOU ARE SURROUNDED. GIVE UP!"
"SCREW U". The man shouted and Andy smiled, that was all he needed to know where he was. Standing up, the Lieutenant took aim and fired. A pained groan was heard.
Running to where he thought the man was, Andy almost cursed when he saw the trail of blood leading out the door. He was about to follow when he heard Sharon's voice calling him. The Lieutenant hoped the others were close by. Andy then headed in the direction Sharon called out.
"God... what happened?" He asked when he got to the place and saw the mess around.
On the floor, clearly dead, was the nurse. Beside her was Judith, she didn't look hurt but she was unconscious and her hands were bound by a towel.
"What happened to you?" She asked when she saw his bloodstained arm.
"Just a scratch". He said and shrugged and looked at the body for answers.
"Adrian shot the nurse and I managed to hit Judith, I think she's going to get some sleep". Sharon spoke frantically. "But Rachel got hit too, not so bad. It was just a scratch too". She said but stopped talking when Rachel screamed in pain again. "Hang in there, Rachel".
"Ok... we need ambulances. Adrian got away, but I hope the Chief is close by". Andy said feeling more nervous. "Do you think Rachel can wait?"
"No". Sharon spoke and glared at him. Her eyes were teary and she took a deep breath. "I can see the baby's head. We're going to have to deliver the baby, Andy."
And that was like a bucket of cold water on the Lieutenant's head, he expected a lot of things, but this was a little too much. What the hell would he do? He barely remembered the last first aid course, he didn't know what to do.
"ANDY!" Sharon screamed as she realized his shock. "Are you still with me?"
"Yeah-yeah". He took a deep breath. "It's just- God... it's too much adrenaline". He spoke almost breathlessly. "What do I do?"
"Stay by her side". Sharon asked. "I will try to do that". She tried to smile.
"You can do it, Tesoro". He encouraged her.
"It hurts". Rachel said suddenly pulling the two out of the conversation. "Why does it hurt so much?"
"I'm so sorry, Rachel". Sharon tried to comfort her. "But let's make it, yeah? Let's bring this baby into the world".
"Ok". The girl whimpered as she felt the contraction approaching. "I'm scared".
"Me too". Sharon spoke and cupped her cheek gently. "But we will make this. You, me and Andy".
"We're a team". Andy spoke and kissed the girl's sweaty hair. "And we're going to win this game".
Sharon looked at him with a smile and even a little disbelief, only Andy to compare this to a baseball game. But she could confess that she felt calmer and more confident about that. She then walked over to him and kissed him softly, she would need all the courage she could muster.
"Show time". She whispered
The next 10 minutes passed quickly and Sharon had never seen labor so fast, she could see the baby's head before but now she knew it was time. Andy seemed to understand this and adjusted the hand he offered to Rachel, he braced himself:
"It's now, Rachel. Push!" Sharon spoke and reached out with trembling hands to hold the baby. "Come on..."
Rachel had stopped screaming minutes before, but she was still crying and trying to catch her breath. But she followed Sharon's instructions. Andy also encouraged her and claimed that she was very brave.
"Just one more time, Mo stór. Just one more time". Sharon asked, her voice starting to crack even though she had a smile on her face.
Rachel took a deep breath and with all the strength she had left she squeezed Andy's hand and let out a scream. For a few seconds everything was quiet... nobody seemed to breathe and then... a strong cry filled the big empty shed.
The baby was crying at the top of her lungs and didn't seem happy about being pulled out of the heat she was in. She was so small and so perfect that Sharon had to stop herself from crying openly. She brought the baby closer to her, not caring about the blood staining her clothes.
"Hey". Andy spoke as he approached her. "Are you okay?"
"Yes... just-" She smiled and looked up at him, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "She's here, Andy. Our Zoe is here".
The emotion in her voice was palpable and Andy felt his own tears come closer as he saw the baby in Sharon's arms. It was as if the fantasy they had created was no longer that, it was reality now. He had a daughter and his wife was holding her in an emotional embrace, a lie he was more than willing to live with.
However, even though he was delighted with Zoe, Andy needed to be objective for now, he grabbed a towel from the side of the bed and helped Sharon swaddle the baby. After that they made quick work of cutting the umbilical cord.
"Hey Rachel". Sharon spoke and approached the girl who looked exhausted and very pale. "Look who's here".
Carefully, the Captain placed the bundle of joy in the young woman's arms and smiled as she seemed mesmerized by the baby. Andy who was next to Sharon, put an arm around her waist and pulled her to him, not caring who saw it, since now he could hear the sound of sirens and hurried steps, he kissed her softly.
"We made it". He whispered into his ear. "We made it, Amore mío".
Sharon smiled, she snuggled into him a little more, but looking at Rachel she could see that something was wrong. The young woman was paler and sweating profusely.
"Rachel... are you okay?"
"I'm tired". The girl whispered and her eyes rolled back in her head as she passed out.
Luckily, Sharon already had her hands on the baby and took the small package in her arms, Andy knowing that the moment was ruined, opened the bed curtain and shouted for an ambulance.
Brenda, Cornwell and two paramedics showed up almost immediately and looked shocked and fearful at the sight. Everything was too red with blood, whether it was on the floor where the nurse's body lay or on the bed where Rachel was passed out.
"Take her". Andy said. "She's losing blood". The paramedic looked at Sharon's arms and deduced what was going on and got to work.
"What happened?" Brenda wanted to know.
"We do not know yet". Sharon said tiredly. "Except that Rachel asked for help. When we arrived, Adrian was going crazy and a shootout started".
"The nurse was hit and... we couldn't do much for her. I managed to hit Adrian, but he got away". Andy reported tired.
"We found him. He will be questioned". Cornwell spoke.
"I managed to contain Judith". Sharon spoke and pointed to the unconscious woman.
"We were able to track the cell phone". Brenda said with a smile. "We saved a lot of girls today".
"Thank God". Sharon spoke and felt like the weight of the world lifted off her shoulders. "But now we need to save one more". She whispered and looked over to where the paramedics were tying Rachel to the gurney. "I'll go with them; my report will be on their desk in a few days".
With that she started to follow the stretcher, not caring that she had blood on her clothes and hands. Andy watched her walk away and fidgeted restlessly, he wanted to go along, he had to actually. He hadn't felt that need in a long time, he needed to know where Sharon, Rachel and Zoe were, it was as if his instincts screamed it.
"Go with them". Brenda said and he noticed that she was looking at him with a small smile. "Hurry up, Andy. Your wife and daughters need you. And take a look at that arm".
The Lieutenant didn't even notice the sarcasm in the blonde's voice, he just hurried to accompany Sharon, maybe the case had affected all of them. But the truth was, he was happy to live this, to have this with Sharon. And when they were both in the ambulance, finally relieved to know that Rachel was going to be okay and that Zoe was healthy even though she was born so early, it was like everything was perfect.
"I think I'm dreaming". Sharon whispered as she cupped the tiny cheek of the baby in her arms. "Is it wrong for me to want to be with her?"
"I'm not the right person to ask that question". He said with a smile as he played with Zoe's little foot.
"And why?' Sharon questioned him in amusement.
"Well... all I know is that I'm on my way to the hospital with my wife because our daughter was just born. And that our friend did a great job in making our dream come true".
"My God... we're screwed, aren't we?" She said with a smile.
"Completely". He spoke and placed a soft kiss on her cheek.
Andy knew they would have a big mess on their hands when they got home, but for now they would stay inside that happy bubble. But Sharon already had other thoughts, she would call Gavin and Andrea for legal help, she would try to help the two girls in front of her and if it ended up with a baby in her life she wouldn't complain.
To be Continue...
