The fire lord's reign was off to a pretty crappy start. His father was dead, his only nephew had been killed at war, and his wife had disappeared, leaving a line of suspicions in her wake. The court was bustling with rumors about the first and last of that list. They said he'd been murdered, and she was the one who had done it. They said the late Lord Azulon knew something about an affair the Princess Ursa had been having and she'd killed him, to keep her secret from getting out.The new fire lord didn't care what they thought. Ursa hadn't cheated on him, nor murdered Azulon. And now he'd been venting to the being who stood beside him
"That man was like a father to me. Did you know that? It just felt like we had this connection, almost like a family bond, but different."
His companion stayed silent, poised elegantly on the edge of the pond they were observing.
Turtle-ducks swam happily about, mates touching beaks and parading their young around, seemingly showing off to the spectators onshore.
Lord Ozai felt only slightly saddened by the display by the males, spending time with their turtle-duck wives. He had taken on a "mistress" of sorts a while back, unknown by his family. She prefered remaining anonymous, the fire lord liked mystery, he didn't mind. She was beautiful, polite, and such a good-listener. Ozai turned his gaze to his left, taking in her magnificence.
"I can't very well tell my family, you know that. They'd never understand our love. They wouldn't accept you for... You know."
She stayed quiet.
"That's what I like about you. You don't judge me."
Suddenly, he leaned in towards her, apparently hearing something that no one sane would hear.
"What do you say? You're pregnant? Is it mine?... Well, this could be awkward to explain to my children."
They stook in silence for a moment.
"Father?" Standing behind the couple was the princess, Azula.
"Father, why are you talking to a tree?"
