Happy Thanksgiving! This is chapter is set in the first year of Sonny and Davis knowing each other. Hope you enjoy!
"Davis." Sonny jogs a few steps down the hallway to catch up to her.
"How can I help you." She returns, not slowing down to talk to him.
"Can ya stop for a damn second so we can talk?" Sonn grumbles.
"Why would I do that?" She asks, still not slowing down.
"Cause, I'm tryin be nice and shit and that's a lot easier to do when someone who is shorter than me manages to walk hella lot faster than I do." Sonny tells her.
A half smile cracks across Lisa's face. "Happy?" She asks when she finally stops walking.
"Thank ya." Sonny chuckles.
"So, this is you being nice?" Lisa asks, letting her annoyance shine through.
"Listen, I, uh, I was thinkin." Sonny stumbles.
"Oh, I know that is a rarity for you." She smirks.
"Damn Davis." Sonny mumbles. "I don't got nobody to spend tomorrow with, and um, as far as I know, ya don't either."
"Wait, are you hitting on me?" Lisa asks.
Sonny quickly shakes his head. "Nah, I, um spend most holidays alone, normally drunk." Sonny takes a breath. "I was thinkin this year instead of bein alone while I got drunk ya could join the pity party."
"I'm trying to decide if I'm offend that you think I'm as much of a loser as you." Lisa says.
"I really am just tryin to be your friend." Sonny smiles. "I see the way ya pull away from people, same as me. And uh, I don't know, we cannot let anyone in together."
"Are you stalking me Quinn?"
"No, I swear." Sonny chuckles. "I do see how ya could get that idea, but no. I'm just not as dense as everyone thinks."
Lisa tilts her head to the side and looks him up and down. "Why are you showing me?"
"Uh, hadn't really thought that one through, but um, two wounded birds." Sonny offers.
"Hmm." Lisa purses her lips. "I guess I don't see the harm in spending one Thanksgiving with you."
"Awe, come on now Davis, this is the first of many."
"Don't get ahead of yourself cowboy, this is a trial run."
"Alright, alright." Sonny holds his hands up. "I'll text ya to figure out the details."
"Don't make me regret this decision." Lisa calls over her shoulder as she walks away.
"I won't." Sonny yells after her.
"I thought today wasn't supposed to make me sad?" Lisa asks as they sit in the restaurant booth.
"How the hell is the International House of Pancakes makin ya sad? This place is awesome, we can get a Thanksgivin dinner and pancakes." He looks up and sees Lisa's face. "Or french toast if ya like that better."
"You really do count on being lovable don't you?" Lisa chuckles.
"What the hell does that mean?" Sonny asks.
"You're just this big country boy and places like IHOP are amazing to you. And you are smart enough to know most women fall for that in a heartbeat." Lisa smirks.
"Damn Davis. Way to see right through me."
"Sorry, I have been reading people my whole life, it um, it was a survival skill growing up." Lisa trails off at the end of the statement.
"Damn, I didn't mean anything by it." Sonny lets out a breath. "I was just jokin."
"I know you were." Lisa nods.
"Do ya wanna talk about it?" Sonny asks.
"I had a shitty childhood." Lisa says with a shoulder shrug. "Not much more I like to say about it."
"And I respect that." Sonny tells her. "So, uh, why the Navy?"
Lisa pauses before answering. "I knew I had to get out and break the cycle. The Navy seemed like the right choice. What about you? Let me guess, little Sonny Quinn always wanted to be a badass SEAL?"
"Ha no." Sonny clears his throat. "Actually, little Sonny Quinn was a pretty big fuck up. And uh, I was just kinda free floatin when 9-11 happened and all of a sudden I had this callin. Walked into a recruitin office two days later. Where I was intruded to the idea that I, an average Texas guy could become a SEAL."
"And now here you are." Lisa smiles.
"Damn straight." Sonny laughs.
"Any plans for after this fancy dinner you have brought me to?" Lisa asks.
"I'm glad we are finally seein eye to eye on the quailty of this establishment." Sonny laughs at his own joke. "But for real, I ain't got the slightest idea. Go back to my place and have a few beers?"
"We can do better than getting drunk at you dingy apartment." Lisa tells him.
"Oh, well excuse me, little miss party planner." Sonny smirks. "What do ya want to do?"
"I don't know." Lisa says looking at the plate in front of her.
"Yes, ya do." Sonny had yet to see her not voice what she wanted. "What to ya wanna do?"
"You'll think it's stupid." She mumbles.
"Now what asshat told ya whatever it is was stupid?" He pushes.
"Every guy I have ever dated, you all think this stuff is dumb." Lisa tells him.
"Well, we ain't datin." He offers.
"The tree lighting." She says under her breath.
"Ya wanna go watch it?" Sonny asks and she nods yes in response. "Okay, as long as we get lit along with the tree."
A smile spreads across Lisa's face. "You really want to go do that?"
"Why the hell not, it definitely sounds better than getting drunk on my sofa." Sonny smiles, had he just peeled back the first layer of Lisa Davis?
"Thank you." She says quietly.
"Listen, if some dude ever tells you what ya want is stupid, give me his address and I'll go deck him for ya." Sonny tells her.
"I kind of believe you would." Lisa laughs.
"I am known for bein unhinged." Sonny laughs when she rolls her eyes in response.
"Damn." Sonny takes the tree in the town square in. "I never stopped to look at this thing, it's huge."
"I know." Lisa smiles. "I make it a point to run past it all season. There is just something so magical about Christmas time."
"Ain't never thought bout that either, but I can see where you're comin from. Like all the lights and shit and people are nicer." Sonny agrees.
"Exactly, Sonny." Lisa takes a sip of the spiked eggnog her and Sonny had bought on their way to the tree. "And good call on the eggnog."
"It's bout the one Christmas thing my pops didn't ruin for me. See my grand ninny used to give me the not kid version to put me to sleep." Sonny chuckles.
"So, we have your grand-ninny" Lisa narrows her eyes at him as she repeats his grandmother's name. "For you being a complete menace to society?"
"I guess now a days I probably would have been diagnosed with ADHD, but Texas didn't believe in that back then." Sonny laughs.
"She had to get you drunk to put to sleep, got it." Davis shakes her head and laughs.
"Now that I hear ya say that." Sonny chuckles.
"Yeah..." Lisa looks up at him. "Hey, thank you."
"I'll tell ya what, I'm actually kinda lookin forward to this." Sonny returns.
The countdown starts and the tree is lit. "It's beautiful." Lisa says under her breath.
"It is pretty damn cool." Sonny agrees. "When you are done admirin the tree, I spy a bar other there that's open."
"I'm good." Lisa turns and looks at him. "To the bar."
"See, I knew we were on the same wavelength." Sonny tells her as they walk across the street.
"Are you forcing me to be friends with you?" Lisa asks.
"First off, I ain't never forced a women, but I do think we could be the bestest of friends." Sonny holds the door to the bar open for her to walk through.
"Thank you." She walks in and heads toward the bar where they find two open bar stools. "Best friends, huh?"
Sonny orders the drinks. "Yes ma'am."
"Interesting." Lisa smirks.
Their drinks arrive. Sonny holds up his shot glass for a toast. "What are we toastin to?"
Lisa too holds up her glass. "Best friends, of course."
