...
The next time Izuku came to he was with doctors instead of Tsukauchi. The doctor did not attempt to approach him once it was clear he was awake. Izuku immediately he began to pat himself down to check that he was as he was when he passed out. To his surprise he was.
No handcuffs or anything else that would indicate the detective knew. That was ridiculous though. Best Jeanist had been there. There was no other reason for a hero and a detective to enter his hospital room.
The doctor asked quietly as if afraid of startling him, "How are you feeling, Mr. Midoriya?"
'Like I got hit by a bus,' signed the green haired youth distrustfully, 'Why am I here?'
The doctor took his bluntness and blatant mistrust in stride as he explained, "Your mother attempted to murder you. Your heart had stopped at one point. Do to the timely arrival of Detective Tsukauchi who had been called by your friend he was able to get you into an ambulance. Once you arrived here we got you into surgery to repair what damage we could. The damage to your throat is significant. You will not be able to speak above a whisper for the rest of your life."
Already knew that. He couldn't speak without pain as it was. That was why he used sign.
"In doing so we also ran your soulmarks through the database," continued on the doctor causing Izuku to suck in a breath, "One soulparent was already in the waiting room. Detective Tsukauchi is the impressive soulparent mark that is on your neck. While the other one had to be called once he was identified. Tsunagu Hakamata was the one on your arm. A good man and of high integrity. You may know him better as the Number Four Pro Hero Best Jeanist."
His soulparents? But...
Izuku took a breath focusing on what had happened. Somehow it made more sense than one of them figuring out that he was the vigilante Fear. That allowed him to breathe slightly easier but his chest still hurt. He rubbed at where the ache centered. Right by his soulmate mark.
The doctor's eyes softened as he asked, "You're still healing but you should be able to leave tomorrow morning. Your soulparents anxious await news on you. May I let them in?"
'Why are you treating me so nice?' He questioned darkly.
"What do you mean?"
To Izuku's surprise he seemed genuinely surprised by the youths question. For a moment Izuku considered not telling him. The world thought of him as weak. They thought of him as useless because they thought he was quirkless. He wasn't but that was the stigma his mother put on him.
'My mother had me declared quirkless,' he signed carefully watching the doctor's reaction.
"Declared?" Asked the doctor, "Does that mean your file is wrong?"
This was a thin line. He couldn't tell them what his quirk was. That would end with him in jail for vigilantism. He just got his acceptance into UA he was going to be a legal hero. All he had to do was be patient.
The doctor narrowed his eyes at Izuku's lack of an answer. The youth refused to budge.
Finally the doctor sighed, "I'll look into it. Now do you want to see your soulparents?"
Nervousness filled Izuku. Did he want to see them? He knew that no matter what he said or did now he would end up going with them tomorrow. He wouldn't have a choice in the matter.
Slowly he nodded and the doctor left the room but not before he looked back. In his eyes was a sense of understanding. Once he was alone he leaned back and focused his attention on the ceiling.
This wasn't good for him. One soulparent was a fucking Pro Hero. What the hell was he supposed to think about his soul being tied to Best Jeanist? And why did he have the feeling that he was forgetting something? Something that was important.
The other soulparent was the very detective he had been running from. Izuku had the feeling that if he spent significant amount of time with the man he would figure out his quirk. No matter how much control he had he always slipped up. Enough slip ups would be enough for the detective to figure it out. He wasn't stupid.
The creak of the door opening caught Izuku's attention. Both Tsukauchi and Best Jeanist entered. Their eyes were carefully examining him as if they thought he would break. Izuku barely gave them a glance before looking back up at the ceiling. If this was going to happen it would be on his terms. He did not trust these men not to treat him like his mother had. He trusted them to do their professional jobs and that was it.
Tsukauchi asked quietly, "Are you okay now, Midoriya? I'm sorry if I scared you."
Izuku blinked in surprise at the apology and looked back at him. There was a genuine contrite look on his face. Guilt ate at him. Maybe he was being a little harsh. No. He had to stay strong. Trust would only get him hurt.
He signed, 'Im fine. What do you want?'
There was a flash of pain in the detective's eyes but Izuku only caught a glimpse. Tsukauchi glanced at the hero who was watching him curiously. Jeanist wasn't what he had been expecting. So far the man hadn't said anything but there was something in his gaze.
"I don't want anything," Tsukauchi replied, "I want to help you."
Green eyes narrowed in suspicion, 'What makes you think I want or need your help, detective?'
"You know I'm a detective?"
'And he's the Pro Hero Best Jeanist,' signed Izuku, 'Im not stupid detective.'
Tsukauchi said, "That makes sense then. How are you feeling?"
'Like I got hit by a bus,' he signed with a dark look, 'Now what do you want?'
The two adults exchanged a glance before Best Jeanist answered, "We want to take you in."
'Why?'
Tsukauchi sighed, "You're not used to people caring. I want to help you as does Tsunagu. If you will let us?"
'Why should I trust you?'
Trust was not his specialty.
The look on his face must have said it all as Best Jeanist said, "Trust can come later. For now just let us take care of you. The system won't just allow you to go into the Foster Care. Not as long as you have two living soulparents. Even if we died they would seek out your soulmate. Unless you would rather live with them?"
Izuku shook his head mutely. No that definitely was not an option.
