Ginny sat upright in bed resting against the pillows propped up against the headboard. It was the next day and Madam Pomfrey had said she would be free to go as soon as her body came back to normal. The release had had a few effects on her. For example her monthly friend had come two weeks early. Why? Well Hermione had explained this to her this morning with a red face. When she'd been possessed by Tom Riddle in her first year he had detected the power within her and realized what it meant. Knowing she'd be an asset to him he'd planted some sort of dark magic within her.
Hermione had proceeded to explain that the magic had been pure and the dark seed Tom had planted within her couldn't stand to stay in a body with such purity which explained why she was having her periods. 'It's sort of washing away the impurities within you' Hermione had said.
And Ginny actually felt it. She felt herself becoming cleansed. "When my powers release again will this happen again too?" Ginny had asked.
Hermione had shaken her head no. "Not unless some pretty heavy dark magic is done on you again."
Ginny was brought back form her reverie as Hermione dumped her book bag in a chair next to Ginnys bed and sat down at the foot of the bed.
"How are you?" Hermione asked.
"I'm O.K." said Ginny putting her magazine down. "I just feel a bit queasy."
Hermione nodded. "Another after effect." She said wisely and then brightened. "Harry and Ron'll drop by after lunch. They're going to bring us both something to eat."
"What about you?" Ginny asked swiftly. "Aren't you going to lunch?"
Hermione shook her head no. "I have some reading to catch up on." She stated. Ginny knew it was an excuse to stay with her but she really needed company.
"So um- did any of my roommates ask about me or something?" Ginny queried.
Hermione nodded. "One of the girls-Shelly was her name I think. She asked about you. I said you ate something that didn't agree with you and were in the infirmary."
Ginny stared at her nails. "Anyone else?" she asked with a slight tremor in her voice.
Hermione stared at her sympathetically. "Ginny-" she began.
"I know." Ginny cut in sharply. "But-" she suddenly stopped and looked down at her magazine. How could she expect Draco to ask about her? He-he hated her again and she knew it. He probably didn't even notice her absence. No scratch that-he DEFINETELY didn't notice her absence.
She rubbed her eyes tiredly. "So what's the plan?" Ginny asked.
"Plan?" Hermione asked looking up from her book. "What plan?"
"You know the old run of the mill save the world plan." Ginny joked. "The one where I'm probably supposed to go through some stupid training session and then we all go into hiding and make plans and then save the world. Or when we just have an all out war and save the world."
Hermione laughed. "Oh Ginny there is no plan." She said amusedly. "What'd you expect? That you're life would all of a sudden just change?"
"Well-yea." Ginny said matter of factly. "Some whole it's my destiny thing to kick into place or something." She said bitterly.
Hermione laughed. "No Ginny sadly nothing like that is going to happen. You're going to live your life normally-well as normally as you can during these times-because you are at the moment perfectly safe. Voldemort knows nothing about you and I expect he's pretty put off about not finding Aradias heir. He'll probably start searching in other countries and schools or something."
"O.K. so what am I supposed to do AFTER I finish my schooling?" Ginny asked.
Hermione shrugged. "Are you asking me for advice on your future career or something? Ginny it's YOUR choice."
Hope shone in Ginnys eyes. "You mean no-no catches? I don't have to become a-a-puppet of destiny or something?"
Hermione shook her head. "No Ginny." She said. "Whatever's meant to happen will happen. It just wouldn't be fair to push you into anything." Hermione suddenly hesitated before continuing. "Though many people will expect a lot from you." She said.
Ginny looked down at her hands.
Hermione sighed. "Just-go with the flow." She said finally. "If it results in a war then we'll fight, if it results in deaths-we'll stand strong and united, if it results in endings-we'll create new beginnings."
"Here, here!" came Rons voice from the doorway. Hermione and Ginny looked up to see Ron and Harry each holding baskets of food.
"Aren't you two supposed to be in the great hall?" Hermione asked as Ron planted a kiss on Ginnys cheek. He smiled down fondly at his little sister as her eyes lit with happiness.
She hugged him and then leaned back.
"Decided it wasn't any fun without the two of you." Ron said and handed out buttterbeers.
Ginny took a gulp of butterbeer and felt her queasiness increase.
"I better not take anything in." Ginny said hastily and set the butterbeer down.
"What you can't handle mortal food?" Ron joked.
"Most likely." Ginny said seriously. "I haven't been able to eat anything without feeling like throwing up."
"Guess the bug's pretty serious." Came a new voice. Ginny looked up to find Shelly standing at the doorway.
"Hi Shelly." Ginny said smiling at her. "Aren't you supposed to be eating lunch?"
"Finished early." Said Shelly off handedly. "I wanted to come check on you."
"I'm fine." Said Ginny. "I'll be out by dinner."
Shelly smiled. "Great so I'll see you then?" she asked.
Ginny nodded.
"Oh and um-Marie and the other are also worried about you. They told me to tell you so. They were wondering if you'd be alright by tonight because-" she suddenly stopped halfway and look hesitatingly at Hermiones headgirl badge. "I'll tell you later." She said quickly and left.
Hermione stared at Ginny suspiciously. "You're a prefect." She reminded.
"I know." Said Ginny roughly. 'But what Hermione doesn't know can't hurt her.' She decided secretly.
"I'm serious. I better not find you five sneaking around." Said Hermione sternly.
"Okay." Said Ginny crossing her arms.
"Oh shove it Hermione." Said Ron stuffing a sandwich in his face.
Hermione stared at him with thin lips but didn't reply.
For the rest of the afternoon Ginny had many visitors. Colin Creevey came along with his younger brother. Both brought her a bag of Bertie Botts every flavor beans. Luna Lovegood also dropped by and brought her this months Quibbler magazine. The whole Gryffindor Quidditch team dropped by and Neville came along with a plant he'd gotten in herbology that day.
"Professor Sprout gave it to me for helping her plant mandrakes and I thought you might like it." He said shyly. Ginny had thanked him and given him a chaste kiss on the cheek making him go red.
Then surprisingly Michael Corner came to visit her with his friends. He brought her some foul smelling liquid and told her that his mum would give it to him whenever he ate something that didn't agree with him. Ginny thanked him but hastily threw the vile down the sink after he left. Through the whole day DA members visited her and most even came back twice. Madam Pomfrey watched them all come and go with pursed lips unable to stop them from entering as Ginny was obviously in perfect condition and nothing seemed to be ailing her at the moment. And then when Ginny had realized that she was hungry and was in the perfect condition to leave the infirmary the last person Ginny expected entered the room. His blonde hair hung in his eyes and the top two buttons of his robes were open.
"Tell me Weasley." He sneered holding a piece of parchment up. "Do you always leave things lying around?"
Ginny stared at her potions essay. Her stomach lurched. She'd oh so long ago asked him to proof read it for her. He'd lost it and Ginny remembered amusedly how she'd fought with him until he offered to help her rewrite it.
He threw the rolled up parchment towards her and it landed in her lap.
Ginny looked down at it. 'Best play the part.' She thought to herself and glared up at him. "And you decide to give it to me a WEEK after it's due?"
He smirked. "What better way to irk a Gryffindor?" he said and turned on his heel.
Ginny smiled at the paper wearily before hugging it to her chest. At least she had memories.
Madam Pomfrey bustled out of her office. "Well dear are you still feeling a bit under the weather?"
"No I'm fine." Said Ginny smiling sadly up at her. "I think I'll leave now."
"Ginny you're better!" Ashley exclaimed as she pulled Ginny into the room and shut the door behind her. "We wanted to come and visit but Marie said you'd be back by dinner anyway and we could see you then." She said and brushed her blonde hair out of her face.
Marie looked up from her book. Her hair was short and black. She had deep grayish blue eyes which were right now boring into Ginny.
"Listen make sure Hermione doesn't find out." She said quickly. "I know for a fact that she'd kill us."
"O.K. so what're you up to?" Ginny asked.
Marie smiled. "Ashley, Dana and I are going to up to the Astronomy tower tonight. You're welcome to join us if you want."
"What's going on tonight?" Ginny asked.
Ashley shrugged nonchantley. "A party." She said smiling. "Nothing big but I doubt you'd like to come. The Slytherins planned it."
"And they invited you?" Ginny asked skeptically.
Dana smiled. "No. Slytherins only but we-along with girls from other houses are going to crash it."
Ginny glanced at Shelly. "What about you?" Ginny asked.
Shelly shook her head. "No thanks." She said. "I'd rather sit here. Knowing the Slytherins it's going to be a pretty...loud and unusual party."
"Yea and Shellys virgin soul can't handle it." Ashley joked.
"It's not that." Said Shelly uncomfortably. "It's just-I prefer peace and quiet." She explained finally.
Ashley smiled. "I know. I'm just joking." She said. "We'll miss you though."
"It's not as if you people are going to the moon or something." She joked.
Dana snorted. "You know Ashley. Always the over one."
"I resent that!" Ashley said and Marie threw a brush towards Ashley who promptly began to brush her hair.
By ten that night the three were just about to leave when Shelly came bursting into their dorm. "I was just downstairs!" she explained gasping for breathe. "And Hermione's suspicious. She's going to check on you four sometime tonight."
Ashley groaned and Ginny suddenly said. "Well the little party won't really get underway till midnight right?"
Dana shrugged gloomily.
Ginny shrugged on a white night robe over her dark blue robes. "Listen just stay in your night robes until Hermione comes to check on us and leaves. She usually goes to sleep around 11:30."
"But it's Friday." Dana pointed out indicating that Hermione would stay up later than 11:30.
"And she has duties Saturday morning. She meets with Dra-Malfoy-" Ginny corrected herself harshly. "-to sort out house points and whatnot."
True to Ginnys word Hermione checked on them that night using a silly excuse about needing to borrow a book from Ginny. Then around 11:50 Ginny checked with Lavender Brown and found out that Hermione was asleep.
The four quietly snuck out. Ginny didn't know what would happen that night but she certainly didn't expect NOTHING to happen.
So when she arrived at the party at the astronomy tower she was surprised to find it actually…civil. No-polite would be the exact word…..everything was calm as everyone casually mingled with each other. .
Ginny wrinkled her nose. "Is this how the Slytherins have a good time?" she asked distastefully.
Ashley smiled wickedly. "The party's just getting warmed up." She said and went over to talk to a few guys she knew. Ginny rolled her eyes and suddenly spotted him.
Draco was leaning against the far wall with his arms casually crossed. He seemed to be laughing nastily about something with his friends. Ginny looked away before he could catch her staring. She closed her eyes momentarily. She didn't belong here….not really.
Ginny finally understood why Shelly liked solitude so much. You could act however you wanted without making a fool out of yourself. Ginny resolutely turned to leave but a voice made her stop.
"Leaving so soon?" came a casual voice. Ginny turned to look at Blaise Zabini. His brown hair hung in his eyes slightly and his blue eyes were looking (surprisingly) kindly towards Ginny.
Ginny sighed. Well he was at least trying to be nice. Ginny nodded. "I guess I'm just a bit tired. Just came out of the hospital wing and all."
Blaise smiled. "Draco told me about that."
Ginny looked down at her hands. "Well I best be going." She said slowly. Blaise surprisingly grabbed her hand.
"Not without a dance." He said smiling kindly at her.
Ginny seemed surprised but allowed him to pull her onto the dance floor which was actually just the middle clearing in the astronomy tower.
A horrid smell that literally choked Ginny surrounded her. Looking towards the source she saw Pansy dancing with Draco. They were now dancing right beside them. Pansys rose perfume smell was even more intoxicating from up close.
"Blaise." Pansy purred. "You're switching loyalties I see." She said playfully eyeing Ginny.
Ginny was determined however not to look at Pansy OR Draco. She was almost positive that the raw emotion in her eyes would not stay concealed.
Blaise laughed. "Pansy luv I was only keeping her preoccupied. The Weasley girl seemed bored."
"What about me?" came Pansys pouty voice.
"As thrilling as your little love squabbles are." Cut in Dracos sharp voice. "I have business to attend to." He disentangled himself from Pansy and left. Ginny finally had the courage to look up.
Blaise chuckled. "Looks like it's Alice Wellington tonight." He said watching Draco saunter over to a dirty blonde haired girl.
Ginny smiled and let go of Blaises hands. "I think you two should take this dance. I'm going now." She turned and left.
Ginny didn't know what she'd expected but maybe she'd actually gone in hope of having some contact with Draco but he didn't so much as even LOOK at her (or was it vice versa?). He hadn't even made any snide remarks….
Ginny entered her dorm to find Shelly asleep with a book sprawled on her chest. Ginny smiled at her roommate and pulled the covers over her before going to the bathroom to change.
Days past and turned to weeks which in turn turned to months. Not one word was exchanged between her and Draco. Oh but Ginny had began to feel so weary. She thought of her fate. She didn't want it. No not at all. Yes she definitely wanted to help fellow wizards and leave an impact on the world before she left-but being the heir to a goddess was not what she wanted. People expected so much from her. She wnate dto do and be remembered for her unexpected deeds.
Hermione was even disappointed when she got a D in potions. But it had just been once! And on a pop quiz too!
"I expected better from you Ginny." Hermione had tsked.
It was now late November and Ginny had just received her transfiguration test results. She'd been working overtime lately what with her prefect duties, quidditch practice and extra potions studying. Plus there was the small fact that her mind was begging for a break. She longed for Christmas vacations to start up soon.
Ginny stared down at her result disbelievingly. She had gotten a D…no wait she had gotten a -D!
Ginny oddly wasn't that surprised but McGonagall's voice rang through the class. "Ms. Weasley someone of your skill could've easily gotten good marks. I'm thoroughly disappointed in you."
Ginny hung her head. She cringed inwardly. So McGonagall knew…she must be thinking 'This is the person who is going to help us escape some terrible fate? God help us."
"I-I am sorry Professor." Ginny mumbled. "It won't happen again."
The signal for end of class started and Ginny grabbed her bag and literally flew out of class. She was falling behind…something that had never happened to her.
What she needed-what she needed was solitude. At this very moment she felt as if she'd go mad if she came into contact with any human being. Running outside Ginny allowed the cool wind to relax her as she ran towards the lake. Laying her head back against a beech tree she let out a long sigh. After about fifteen minutes a voice interrupted her peace.
"Ginny?" came Harrys voice uncertainly.
Ginnys eyes snapped open. She didn't need this. No not right now. She wanted peace-just peace and understanding. Not joking around or lectures about how worried everyone was.
"Yea?" Ginny finally called out.
Harry came and sat beside her. "What're you doing out here?" he asked.
Ginny sighed. "Just-thinking." She said finally and turned to face Harry. Her eyes fell on his scar and hope shined in her eyes. He-he was just like her. Part of something-something he didn't want to be (or atleast she thought so) something that made everyone look to him with great expectations.
"Want to talk about it?" Harry offered flattening his bangs against his scar when he saw her watching it.
Instead Ginny hesitantly moved his hand and bangs away to stare at it. Harry didn't hide his surprise but didn't stop her either.
"Harry do you ever feel….as if you don't belong here? As if you're just-just to different to be around everyone else?" she asked questioningly.
Harry swallowed hard and nodded slightly. "It'll get better Ginny. It just-you'll learn to accept it and it'll just seem…normal."
Ginny moved her hand away and leaned back. "It's just that everyone expects so much from me. First I was expected to do great things because of my brothers and because I was the only Weasley girl. Now..now because of this stupid prophecy they expect me to do great things, win quidditch matches, get perfect grades, become headgirl and probably invent some special life relinquishing potion." She said rolling her eyes.
Harry chuckled and grabbed her hand reassuringly. "Ginny don't worry. I know you'll do well in everything and even if you don't-"he paused as Ginny looked swiftly up at him. "-no one will be disappointed in you…least of all me. You're only human after all. I know you feel confused and feel as If you have no one to turn to because no one has ever experienced what you're going through. This isn't some teen problem that your mum had when she was young and can give you advice on. You'll have to trust your own instincts this time but just remember I'm here if you ever need to talk."
Ginny sighed and rested her head against the tree trunk. "I just wish it didn't have to be this way. Do you feel like that sometimes? I mean people expect you to beat the Dark Lord and all. I feel as if I don't even deserve what I have. What if I mess up?"
Harry shook his head and leaned close. "Ginny I'm just part of some small plan-but you-you're part of something much more important. You wouldn't be part of anything if you didn't already have something special in you." He gave her hand a reassuring squeeze before getting up to leave and suddenly Ginny felt just slightly better as she watched his retreating back. At least she wasn't alone in this. He knew how she felt. He could sympathize with her if not guide her. Hugging herself she slowly got up and retreated towards the castle suddenly finding new resolve.
"O.K. we can take a break." Harry finally relented throwing his broom to the ground in defeat. Their next match was with Slytherin and Harry was working them harder than houselves. Ginny felt as if her arms were about to pop out and her legs would fall off any minute. She trudged towards the bleachers where Shelly and Ashley sat doing homework.
"Tired?" Ashley asked giving her a small smile.
"Ugh." Ginny groaned as she sat down on the bleachers. Her legs hurt like anything and it even hurt her to sit. "One would think I'd just done more than Quidditch practice. My legs hurt so much!" she whined.
"Oh so that's what you've been doing up in the air with Harry." Ashley said amusedly. Ginny stared at her aghast before falling into hysterical giggles. Ashley and Shelly joined in.
"You have a sick mind." Ginny said and rested her head in Ashley's lap. "My head hurts too." Ginny added as an afterthought. "And I feel sleepy." Ginny yawned before closing her eyes. Shelly took her cloak and put it over Ginny. "Wake me up when Harry announces p-p-praactice." Ginny said trying to stifle a yawn and failing.
"O.K." said Ashley and went back to her homework.
"Uh-oh." Shelly whispered and Ashley looked up. Students clad in green quidditch robes came onto the pitch.
"What is it Malfoy?" Harry asked impatiently as a smirking Malfoy approached the field with his fellow teammates.
"Well we want to practice." He said casually. "We have a match in three days time. The quidditch pitch is as much ours as it is yours."
"I booked the field." Harry snarled. "And I have it booked for another full hour."
"Yes but I also have permission from Professor Snape." He said and waved an official looking letter in Harrys face smirking. "It gets rather dark after your team is done practicing and my team would rather not fumble around in the dark. You see it's dangerous." He said the last bit as if Harry was a two year old child.
"Well shove off." Harry snarled. "You lot can practice in the morning. Get up early for once in your lives."
Malfoy smirked. "Why don't YOU lot get up early? Wait I remember Potters red headed girlfriend keeps him too busy during the night to-"
SLAP!
Draco stared amazed at who had just delivered the blow when he spotted the petite redhead a half foot shorter than him glaring up at him. It would have been funny-if not for the circumstances. She glowered angrily at Draco and he felt something odd stir inside him.
"How dare you even suggest-" Ginny sputtered. "You-you-" she struggled for the right words. Oh what had happened to the Draco she'd known?! She searched in his eyes for the old Draco. The one from the beginning of the school year but he was either gone or hiding.
Dracos eyes widened and he looked surprised at her outburst.
"You disappointed me Draco Malfoy." She spat out finally before turning on her heel. "Come on Harry let them have their stupid quidditch practice. We'll beat them anyway."
Ginny didn't know this but she was the first person ever to imply that she thought he was capable of integrity.
Gryffindor beat Slytherin as always and Ginny couldn't help but say out loud during breakfast the next day.
"Guess the Slytherins didn't practice hard enough."
She caught Malfoys eye and smirked at him before looking down at her plate.
Life was finally resuming back to normal with her. She was able to push her memories of him aside finally and act as if nothing had happened. It relieved Ginny greatly.
And then when there was only one more day left until Christmas holidays It had been a Hogsmeade trip today and she'd just had her first (As last time Ginny had gone with Harry to the Halloween party at Madam Puddifoots and her second time she'd decided to go out with Shelly and co.) Occlumency lesson. It had drained her and Ginny found herself sitting outside under the same beech tree she had sat under when Harry had comforted her. Unknown to her however was that this was the same beech tree James Potter and the other marauders use to sit under.
Ginny sat enjoying the cool air. Her breath came out in wisps of smoke.
"This is becoming a habit isn't it?" Came a new voice. Ginny looked up to see Harry staring down at her with a raised eyebrow.
Ginny smiled and scooted slightly to make room for him. He sat down beside her.
"So what's troubling you?" Harry asked throwing a stone into the lake.
"Nothing." Ginny whispered truthfully and watched intently as the rock skipped in the lake.
"That was about three skips." Said Ginny awed as she stared at where the rock had fallen into the lake.
Harry shrugged off handedly. "I can make it up to five usually. Back to the original topic though. What's troubling you?"
"Nothing." Ginny said again but this time loudly and truthfully. "I just-felt like coming here. Doesn't it seem so peaceful?" she asked motioning towards the landscape.
Harry nodded.
"I see what you mean." He said skipping another rock.
"Could you teach me?" Ginny asked slowly.
Harry nodded. He guided her on how to hold the rock and throw it. Ginny tried a few times but failed.
"Put your thumb like this." He guided her thumb with his fingers towards the appropriate spot but somewhere in between Ginny felt the air fill with something like static. The bottom of her stomach dropped as Harry whispered into her ear. She shivered enough for Harry to notice.
"Cold?" he asked his breath warm in her ear.
Ginny nodded silently. Didn't he feel the least bit nervous?
Truth be told Harry felt like jumping up and running in the opposite direction but he was rooted to the spot. 'Just kiss her' he told himself. 'Or at least tell her you like her.'
But no he couldn't. He opened his mouth a few times but shut it. He exhaled a breath and Ginny shivered again. Harry tried to force himself to take his cloak of and wrap it around her but to no avail. He seemed frozen. It was remarkable how he could come up with witty comebacks quickly and fight the Hungarian horntail without trouble but couldn't seem to think of one thing say to Ginny. Even the department of mysteries fiasco seemed easier than this.
Thus Harry did the only thing he seemed capable of doing. He removed his hand from hers and wrapped his arms around her. He brought her close and crushed her body towards him. He swallowed hard and his mouth seemed as if it was filled with sawdust.
"Better?" he croaked out but it reached Ginnys ears as a small husky whisper.
"Mmm…much." She replied snuggling closer. She wanted to stay like this forever in the safety of his arms. It felt totally different from what it had been like with Draco. Whereas the slightest touch from him left her gasping for more harrys touch…it seemed to give her not exactly a breath of fresh air…but more like an oxygen mask to wear when she was underwater. She trusted him and the way his arms were around her protectively…..'ironic' she thought to herself. 'I'm supposed to protect mankind but I'm literally dying for safety and security in some ones arms.'
She smiled bitterly into Harrys chest.
"Ginny." He said in a tight and constricted voice.
"Hmmm?" she asked.
"Do you think-um-would you like to-" he took a deep breath. "Will you be my girlfriend?"
"Yes." Came Ginnys muffled reply.
Harry couldn't hide the stupid grin on his face. Ginny looked up at him. She hadn't thought she'd be the one to do this but honestly how shy could a guy get?
"There's just one thing missing." Said Ginny.
"What" Harry asked looking down at her perfectly content. Ginny took in a deep breath and leaned towards him. She kissed him square on the lips and deepened the kiss. When they broke away. Ginny was breathing heavily but her eyes were alight with happiness.
The smile was wiped off of Harry's face though when a thought suddenly struck him. "Who's going to tell Ron?" he asked in a distressed voice.
